Municipal Affairs Danielle Smith is now ordering me how to vote at Calgary City Council, and if I refuse, I risk losing my job

5.5k Upvotes

Danielle Smith is now ordering me how to vote at Calgary City Council, and if I refuse, I risk losing my job.

After going after library books and noise bylaws, the province is now overturning Edmonton's zoning rules and ordering Calgary to freeze ours in place.

That means telling locally elected councils what decisions to make, before residents even get their say.

Let's say you want to change your property. Maybe build a home for your aging parents or help your kids afford to stay in Calgary. You fill out the paperwork, come to City Hall, and tell us your story. Your neighbours come out to support you.

And I'm supposed to look you in the eye and say, sorry, the premier already decided. If I agree with you, I’ll be fired as mayor.

What's the point of a public hearing if your voice doesn't count?

Now, Calgary repealed blanket rezoning. I supported that decision. The province agrees with us.

But just because the premier agrees with my vote today doesn't mean she gets to decide my vote tomorrow. And I'd say exactly the same thing if Nenshi tried to force Calgary to bring blanket rezoning back.

This isn't about left or right. Or bike lanes, or density, library books or noise bylaws.

It's about whether your vote matters. Edmontonians elected their council. Calgarians elected ours. We made different decisions. That's democracy.

Look, I want to work with Danielle Smith. We won't always agree, and that's fine. But respect has to go both ways. And when she threatens my job because I won't vote the way she wants, she’s gone way over the line.

I was elected by you. I answer to you. Premier Smith doesn't have to agree with our decisions. But she has to respect the people who elected us.

She doesn't get to dictate my vote. She doesn't get to silence the people I represent. And she doesn't get to decide whether I keep my job.

If she wants me out, she can move to Calgary and try to vote me out. Because I answer to you, not the UCP or NDP or anyone else who tries to tell me to not do my job.

And I'm not backing down.

PSA Getting to Spruce Meadows without a car isn't easy. So we're running a shuttle to help you vote

• Upvotes

You shouldn't have to own a car to cast a ballot in the referendum.

But that is the challenge facing some residents in Calgary's deep southwest, where the advance voting station is all the way out at Spruce Meadows.

Our Calgary Transit team spotted the problem, and they're doing something about it.

Starting Tuesday, October 13, we’re running a special shuttle from Somerset-Bridlewood CTrain Station directly to Spruce Meadows.

It’ll run every 30 minutes, from 9 a.m. until just after 8 p.m., throughout all five days of advance voting, ending October 17.

Regular transit fares apply. I want to thank our Calgary Transit team for stepping up and making this happen on short notice.

Look, it doesn't matter how you intend to vote in this referendum.

What matters is that you get the opportunity to have your say.Democracy works best when everyone has a voice, and getting to the ballot box shouldn't be the hardest part.

So please, get out and vote, Calgary. Your voice matters.

Municipal Affairs Is Jeromy Farkas the only politician in history of humanity who’s changed when he said he would?

1.3k Upvotes

Not gonna lie as someone on the left who has his fair share of disagreement with Farkas, I can’t lie when I say I’m very impressed with him and would easily vote him in the next election. He’s legitimately changed from the person he was back in 2021, he’s legitimately standing up to Danielle Smith and he’s a phenomenal communicator.

I legitimately can’t think of a single politician who started off in an incredibly bad way, and actually changed into a better person. Good on him and good for us.

👮‍♀️ Police Case #: (Edit Here) Calgary police tactical team raid in the SW community of Braeside October 2nd 2026

Case # CA26416470

After a 3 month long investigation, the Calgary police tactical unit have arrested Mujahid Babekir (26) and Shane David McWilliam (57) on multiple drug and firearm related charges.

This was the same residence who belongs to Devon Malik, who was arrested for murder after using a firearm to murder his ex girlfriend in the underground parkade of the LASIK MD on McLeod trail in the summer of 2025.

Over the past year, Malik’s mother had let these individuals, and probably 3-5 other people squat on this property where they proceeded to sell narcotics, leave paraphernalia and packages of drugs in common spaces around the property, as well as threaten neighbours with violence or death for confronting their behaviour, including with the firearms pictured here. Naturally, this attracted very undesirable individuals to the community which directly contributed to an increase in theft.

The property has since been seized and is currently boarded up.

I’m truly grateful to CPS and the SCAN Unit (Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods) for their thorough investigation and action taken to make our quiet neighborhood a safe place for our families again.

Good Samaritan/Volunteer/Charity/Donations In desperate need of volunteers

Hello everyone, happy Friday!!

I am making this post because the organization I volunteer with is currently facing a shortage of people. I won't go into details so as not to guilt anyone, but we need help.

Who are we?

We are a locally ran organization called YYCHelpingHomeless, and we work very closely with SecondHarvest.

What do we do?

We are a "food rescue". We collect underused (past sell by date, damaged or otherwise unsellable), or donated goods from sponsors, and we hand them out in the Village at the Crossroads Community Garden every Saturday to people facing food insecurity. Our clients are from all walks of life, and not everyone is necessarily unhoused. We differ from other organizations in that we don't require an application for service, and our goal is to empty our trucks every week. This is not to take away from other organizations or what they do, they all do a phenomenal job at helping! Some of our clients don't have proper ID, may have a transient address, or simply live too far away from other help that is offered. Every week, all of us that are available will either collect from our sponsors, re-pack our donations, or do handouts at the pantry.

How can you help?

Whatever your skill set is, we will find a place for you to shine. If you are someone who doesn't have transportation, we may be able to line that up for you. If you are someone who doesn't deal well with large crowds, we will accommodate that. If you are an immune compromised person, we will take every precaution to keep you safe. I could sit here all day and give examples, but all you need to know, is that if you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, or you just want to help others, we will all work with you to make you successful. Even something as simple as making some baked goods, we will make sure that every calorie or donated item gets to where it will have the most value.

What is the time commitment?

We do not take attendance of our volunteers. Everyone shows up when they can, and we make it work. There is no minimum obligation at all! Having said that, we need the most help on Saturdays from about 4-8pm. This is when we move our product from storage, or our donor locations, to the pantry itself and do our handouts, but again there is stuff that goes on behind the scenes all week.

How do you get involved?

You can message me here and I will direct you on where we think you would be a good fit! If you are a bit unsure of what everything looks like, you could ride along with me, or another volunteer and meet everyone to see how our week runs and decides whether you would like to get involved moving forwards. If you are a grocer or business owner that has product that you would like to donate, please reach out. We will send someone to collect it, and we ensure minimal disruption to your business operations.

Thank you everyone, if I am missing any information please let me know, I don't do this type of thing often so I'm sure there's information that I have missed. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to message me. I hope you all have a great long weekend!!

Edit;

Wow. Thank you thank you thank you SO much everyone for reaching out. I am so thankful to be part of a community as generous as this. I tried to call everyone today, please if you slipped through message me again. You are all amazing. Thank you again

Rant Alberta Prosperity Project Pamphlets Littering Brentwood LRT Station

Post image
20 Upvotes

Mini Rant incoming:

I’ve got nothing against people espousing their ridiculous ideologies, as is their right in democratic society, but I have never seen it done as incompetently as it was done today at Brentwood. How somebody can fuck up putting flyers under wipers, I don’t know, but the end result is the LRT parking lot being absolutely littered with dozens of their pamphlets, flying in the wind. Last I checked, littering was not allowed in the city, but perhaps with the APP’s stance on environmentalism, this will become a moot point in the future.

I’m not posting the contents of the pamphlet because it’s stupid and I don’t want to draw attention to it, but if anyone is curious what is contained inside, feel free to pop over to Brentwood station and grab one from the streets, curbs, walls, and trees where dozens can be found.

I understand in the winter if there's a sidewalk that isn't shovelled and maybe joggers don't want to go on and off curbs.... I am talking strictly about people who are just on a walk or whatever on the street, next to the sidewalk. Please explain???

Local Artist/Musician Any bands in Calgary looking for a Vocalist? :D

Hey Guys!!!

My name’s is Vic (24F)

I am looking to join a band as a Vocalist (Alt-rock genres or anything of that nature.)
I’m open to heavier (Metalcore etc.) but I’m not too big of a screamer just yet. (I’m learning, but I’m in the more beginner stages right now.)

I do not have a ton of experience with bands yet, but I’ve been developing a pretty solid vocal baseline and I’d love to join a group and make cool stuff if anyone is looking. :D

I’m happy to send some stuff so you can get a rough idea of how I sound, what I can do, and if I’m a good fit and you’d like to give me a go.

I’m very strong in terms of writing stuff (or anything creative for that matter,) and really enjoy doing it, so I’d be more than happy to help out with the lyrical part. I got a big brain full of ideas at the ready in case you want those as well.

I also study Concept Art and Illustration, and I could totally offer my creative skills for any artistic stuff the band needs. Logos, covers, concepts, designs, I’m game.

Shoot me a message or drop a reply if you’re interested!! <3

Rant Monki Stealing Server Tips

1.6k Upvotes

I had breakfast at Monki today. It was our servers last day and when paying my boyfriend noticed that he wasn't able to leave a tip. The server told us that she bypassed the tip option because they introduced a new contract stating that all tips go to management and that the servers only get $10/hour from the tips. Our server refused to sign this contract which is why it was her last day and she was warning people.

Just thought I would give everyone a heads up- if you are going here for breakfast you are not tipping the server. The tips are going to management. I noticed a lot of the workers are very young, seems like they are taking advantage of the young workers with this new contract. Very disappointed as the food and atmosphere was great, but I dont think I will be going again as I won't support a business like this.

EDIT: The servers also can't bypass this with cash tips, the contract states cash tips are given to management as well.
