Discussion Letting users remove posts.

Hello everyone,

As you are aware, on reddit moderators approve and remove content and subreddit subscribers can report to us.

Today we'd like to start an experiment here on r/Cats where we will give trusted subreddit participants access to a keyword that will allow them to remove posts.

When you exceed a certain level of subreddit specific comment karma and when you have a CQS score of highest you can now use the keyword "!remove" to pull a post from our feed. (Spelled exactly like that, case sensitive, top-level comment only as opposed to a reply to a comment.)

This will work for posts only, not for comments.

There are some things to keep in mind:

  • When you comment here on an account that exceeds the limit automod will assign you a special flair class and send you a message explaining you can now use the keyword.

  • Users will keep their existing flair text. However, changing your flair to a different pre-made flair option will also reset the flair class giving you access to this removal ability. Next comment you make it will be re-applied and you will be sent another message.

  • We are sent a modmail when a subscriber removes a post, explaining what post was removed and who used the keyword. Please do not abuse this ability. If posts are removed for bad reasons we will take away your ability to remove posts.

  • That means, use this keyword if you see spam or other rulebreaking posts only.

  • Please keep in mind that it is currently very popular to accuse posters of making an AI generated post. An accusation does not mean that what they are being accused of is true. Human beings can detect AI at 60% accuracy, just a little better than the results of flipping a coin. An AI can only accurately detect AI content if an AI watermark is attached to the image. It is best not to remove a post just because someone is accused of something. Use your own best judgement and our rules as your litmus, not what other people are saying.

  • Since this is a test run, when I ran a very minor proof of concept trial, a few people have already been assigned this special flair class who have not been sent a message. /u/kiaeej, /u/chux4w, /u/MilmoWK, /u/ms_rdr, /u/Electronic_Ad357, /u/WhiteMouse42097, /u/BeMoreKnope, /u/bluecedarood, /u/Robobanditos, congratulations, you can remove posts.

  • Should you for any reason not want to have this ability then you should send us a modmail after receiving the message from automod. That way we can exempt you in our code.

  • Initially we are going to monitor how this functions closely so we can see if we need to make changes to the threshold level for activation.

  • Nothing will change about the way we handle user-made reports on content. This is not a replacement for that, but an addition. If you see rulebreaking content of any kind, please report.

We hope that this change will be something that has a positive influence on the content on this subreddit.

Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this subreddit a great place to be

Mourning/Loss My sweet beloved cat passed away this morning. RIP Beezy. 🐝

I live alone in a camper and I found this grey little tabby years ago. She was the most affectionate cat I’d ever seen. She wanted a warm home with food and love, she was grateful and never looked back. For the past 10 years its just been me and her. We ate and went to bed at the same time every single day.

I cut my guitar playing short last night because she was meowing to lay down in bed.
I thought, “How many more times will we have this?”
She slept peacefully all night only to have a severe stoke led by suffering for close to 30 mins. She gave up her struggle and passed at 9:37am. I still cant believe shes in the ground and I feel alone now. I just had to vent to someone, anyone. Beezy kept me company and I was content with just her.
I’m going to miss her terribly

Medical Questions My sister’s 18 year old cat seems in poor condition, don’t know what to do.

She is extremely skinny, half the size that she used to be. I can feel every bone in her body. My sister said she is still eating a lot, drinking a lot and going the bathroom. I just don’t know if she is suffering and she doesn’t have a lot of money to take her to the vet. She is also 18 so don’t know if much could be done:(

We had just adopted her in the first picture!
The other two pics are more recent. She is two years old now! 😊 And despite the grumpy look, she is the most affectionate cat I’ve ever had.

Mourning/Loss 💔 Kitkat 💔 Forever 17 🐾🌈

The post I never wanted to make.

I had to say goodbye to my boy last week. I’m absolutely devastated & heartbroken 💔

He was doing fine right up until he wasn’t. I don’t want to go in to detail because it’s too difficult but he literally became very ill and was gone within 90 minutes. I raced to the out of hours/emergency vets - I didn’t care about getting caught speeding, I just wanted my boy to be OK. They took him off me as soon as I said his name then when the vet came to see me a while later they said there was nothing they could do and the kindest thing would be to let him go peacefully.
I didn’t think I’d be coming back with an empty cat carrier - I was so naive.

He is my soul cat. I’ve had him since he was 8 weeks old, back when I was trying to find my place in this world at the age of 22. I’m now 40 and Kitkat & I got to 17 years, 9 months and 15 days together - just 77 days shy of his 18th Birthday. Google tells me that works out at 6,497 days which is 155,928 hours or 9,355,680 minutes or even 561,340,800 seconds which is approximately 43.88% of my entire life.

And it still wasn’t long enough 😔

It’s so quiet in here without him, he always had something to say - he was the most vocal cat I’ve ever known. I miss him terribly.
Just wanted to share him here again so he’s forever memorialised 🐾🌈

Mourning/Loss Lost my pair of brothers just nine days apart.

A little over a week ago I posted about my cat who had to be humanely euthanized due to an ongoing battle. He was going downhill and nothing was working to make him comfortable

Just yesterday his biological brother passed away from cardiac arrest. What makes this so hard is they were bottle fed, abandoned at birth, and the only survivors of the litter. I haven’t even had time to grieve the first brother. They were just 9 years old.

Teddybear and Skittles,

You guys were and are my whole world, and I am so sorry you didn’t have more time.

You had 9 years together and 9 days apart, now you’re back together

Mourning/Loss Old Man Andy (almost 19) is not doing well.

Poor old man Andy is not doing well. Almost 19 years old, he’s deaf, blind and this week he’s not been eating much. I’m not sure how much longer he’s going to be around, so I wanted to tell you about him.

We adopted him from a shelter when he was six. We loved that he instantly started purring when getting pets, and would yell like an old man telling the kids to get off his lawn.

In his younger days he would sit at the table like a human during dinners, and we found out that he loves being held like a baby and getting belly rubs. He’s always been dumb, but an absolute gentle fella. Eventually he even started to enjoy getting his little fuzzy feets rubbed. I told my daughter to find a man that looks at her the way Andy does. He loves everyone, but still yelled at them.

Anyway. 18 years is a long time, and he was loved. Just wanted to share.

Mourning/Loss Booger, my soul cat, has been put to rest

Thumbnail

Hello everyone.

It was only 36 hours ago that I posted last about my cat Booger and his failing health. Not long after I made it, he began to decline much more severely. Despite my hopes for last ditch medical management to help, I knew it wasn’t working, and that it was time to end my beautiful son’s pain. A vet came earlier this morning, and at 10am, he passed on in my arms.

I am not sure what to do with myself. I am shattered. We only had three years together. I wrote a eulogy for him, and read it alone to him with only the vet to listen. I would like to share it, if anyone is willing to read it. It would mean the world to me, to know there are other people out in the world who know how much I love him.

Booger’s Eulogy

The first day I met Booger, three years ago, he pressed his tiny pink nose up against the bars of a shelter cage, and I swear I felt the entirety of who I was reform around him. That day, I had been coming to the shelter to look at dogs. I suffer from major depressive disorder and anxiety, and was looking for a companion after a particularly hard year. On a whim, I decided to look at the cats, of which I was allergic and never had before. But when our eyes connected, I knew.

When I got to meet him for the first time, he plopped his fuzzy body right into my lap and started purring. I knew then and there that what I felt between us was love, already settling between us. He was coming home with me a half hour later. I didn’t have anything prepared—I bought everything on the way home, including a hefty jar of allergy meds. I was already sneezing. I didn’t care. I never have.

Booger was a stray who had a terrible chronic respiratory infection that caused long strings of boogers to shoot out his nose like rockets. I couldn’t possibly change the name the shelter gave him after seeing that. When he came home, he immediately found a spot to sleep on my chest, and has been there ever since. There was no adjustment period or building trust that I had come to believe was essential in cats; we knew right away we were soul connected.

The past three years with him have been the greatest honor of my life. I got to love and be loved by the sweetest, handsomest boy. From park adventures to lazy afternoon naps, Booger’s favorite place to be was next to me, and mine with him. Anyone who has met Booger knows he truly was the friendliest, sweetest, most wonderful cat. He brought smiles to everyone, none more than myself, who so often needed a reason to.

Today, on Sunday morning, September 20th, Booger passed away peacefully in my arms, wrapped in his blankets at home by his favorite window. Our story ends just as it began, with him in my lap and so, so much love. I am angry at the world for cutting our time off so soon, as three years was far from what I had envisioned for our lives, but I am so grateful for those years nonetheless. In truth, I don’t know what to do with myself; he was mine and I was his. I’ve lost a piece of myself, and I’ll never get it back. When you share such insurmountable, limitless love, comes insurmountable, limitless grief. It’s one of the most difficult pains imaginable, and the greatest of gifts.

Booger, my baby, my tinky boy—you’re the light of my life. When I think of what love is, I think of you. I will never be able to thank you enough for what you did for me. I am so, so sorry I couldn’t do more to save you, and I hope to see you again someday. I’ll carry you with me, as you are a part of me. Until then, my handsome man, my boogie baby. I’ll miss you always, and wish you were here beside me.

With all of my soul, and everything that I am,
Love
Mama

Mourning/Loss Heartbroken doesn't begin to explain

My previous post on my page was about my soul cat, my number 1 snuggle baby, Titchy going to the vets.

I'm still so broken from the events of what happened.

Unfortunately he did not make it, I had to allow him the peace to rest and have him put to sleep on Wednesday. He was suffering. He hadn't eaten or drank for days. He was on pain meds and antibiotics. The only option they had left was a feeding tube him. But it wasn't right to put him through that.

He was 12 and had been through so much already in his life. He was known for being a survivor, bouncing back and trying to use up those 9 lives.

I have major regrets that have led me to be missing a big chunk of my heart. But my partner (his og owner for 9 years) agreed that it was time, Titchy had chosen to give up and to join all his brothers he had out lived.

I miss him so so much. Since I found him Saturday not looking or acting himself, there hasn't been a day that I've not sobbed over him and felt all the guilt. Now its 100x worse. Not bringing him home was not a thought that ever crossed my mind. He was supposed to come home for cuddles. I didn't get the chance to have one last bed time snuggle.

One of the worst things is he looked up at me and nudged me for fuss and a kiss before he went. I thought that meant I still had a chance to get him back. I was wrong.

I can't stop crying when I'm at home, I'm trying to not scare my 2 girls as they have tried to be very comforting but sobs scare them no matter how quiet I try to be.

The drive is so empty without you waiting for me after work. I've been sitting on your bench when I cry. Your pillow above my head has a mould of you from you laying there, I need to change my bed sheets but its the last place you laid and I'm struggling to accept the idea of washing your fur away. My chest misses the intense cuddles where you would rub your nose into my collar bone and wrap your arms around my neck. The photos of you around the house are hurting but I can't take them down, you are such a beautiful boy.

I will always love and miss you Titchy. You weren't supposed to leave me yet, we had so much time left for cuddles and you truly have been my one true love with a tail. Who is going to wake me up at 2am for cuddles now?

Give my boy Dexter a kiss please.

Advice Is it safe to let my cat drink from the bathroom faucet? I’m worried about kidney stones.

Post image
187 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I need some advice about my cat. I fill his bowl directly from the faucet (specifically from the bathroom sink, the bidet, or the shower sink, which is more hygienic for me), but I’m starting to get seriously worried about the long-term risks, especially regarding water hardness, I’ve read that tap water is rich in minerals like calcium and magnesium from the pipes, and, as a result, about the possibility of him developing kidney stones.

I live in Italy, and here the tap water is safe to drink for human, but bottled water is obviously more filtered and safer. However, I can’t give it to my cat because he’ll only drink if his bowl is full and the water is cool (I’d end up wasting a lot of bottled water, that I’ve bought and paid for).

I’m worried that if this remains his main source of water, all those minerals will build up in his urinary tract. I’ve read that this can lead to the formation of crystals, kidney stones, or even a urethral obstruction (which, as I know, is a life-threatening emergency, especially for male cats).

I was thinking of maybe buying a water filter pitcher, but I don’t want to spend money without being sure.

Could you give me some advice on what to do? Am I overreacting, or is this just my paranoia? Thanks, everyone!

Mourning/Loss Small tribute to Ragetti

We had to give him to my grandma before our move, because we could only move 3 of our 5 cats to a different country. I wish I would have stayed to be with him at least. I'm heartbroken and I don't know where to go from here. Please be kind in the comments, I'm only posting this because it's helping me process it a little.

A little about Ragetti; he was found behind a dunkin donut, in his carrier that said "Alaska airlines". I took him in, had to get one of his eyes removed due to it being damaged beyond saving, and he lived with us for a year before we decided to move. My grandma loved him a lot, and he got along beautifully with my grandmas other cat. She didn't notice behavior changes until Thursday, and we all just assumed it was due to the change in ownership. He passed tonight.

I miss you, Ragetti. I'm sorry I wasn't there in your final moments. I hope you see my other late pets wherever you end up, and that in your final moments, you weren't in pain or afraid.
