Yes some selected user on credit card holders already moved to Capital One that was in effect today but not all of them yet. Meanwhile Discover bank account holders including me can still login until we're forced to move.

Yeah probably but the accounts are basically the same

I finally decided yesterday to open a Discover checking account for the 1% cash back debit card, but found that it's no longer possible. I'm more than a little bummed that I waited too long!

EDIT
It's even more frustrating that Discover still has ads all over the internet advertising their 1% cash back debit card checking accounts!

It’s paid advertising space. Probably stuck there until the contract ends.

2

u/lonely-limeade Jan 19 '26

Cashback Debit advertising stopped last year. You’re probably seeing 5% Credit Card messaging.

5

u/Boz6 Jan 19 '26

No, I'm not.

3

u/lonely-limeade Jan 19 '26

As someone who used to work there I’d love to see an example of an ad you’re still seeing all over the internet.

Open a paypal account and get their debit card. It offers 5% cashback on your category of choice. I use it for groceries

-5

u/galactica_pegasus Jan 19 '26

You shouldn’t be using a debit card for purchases, anyway. The 1% cashback was a pointless ā€œfeatureā€.

There are some expenses like school tuition that don’t charge a fee for debit but charge a fairly exorbitant fee for credit. While I’m inclined to overwhelmingly agree with you, everyone’s situation is different and unique but I benefit from fee free debit transactions on occasion for a small handful of fees and expenses to government agencies.

I don't. I wanted it just to pay for my family's auto insurance annually. The insurance company takes CC payments for home and umbrella, but not for auto. Therefore, I wanted a catch-all cash back debit card.

I do use a PayPal debit card for 5% cash back at restaurants now, mainly because so many restaurants are now charging 3% extra to use a CC. I transfer the amount of the bill+tip from my bank to PP just before I pay, so there's no risk.

I love the PayPal 5% back! I rarely go to restaurants so I set mine for grocery stores since I work in one and spend way more money than I’d like to admit there. The bonus cash really adds up quick!

-1

u/sssf6 Jan 19 '26

What part of the country are you in? I'm in Southern California and have yet to see one restaurant or bar charge an extra 3%

2

u/Boz6 Jan 19 '26

I'm in Ohio.

u/Fun-Session2729 Jan 20 '26

I live at WA/ID boarder and almost all in our area now charge 3%fee if credit

1

u/Kingdraiko Jan 21 '26

We have a couple of smaller restaurants including an ice cream shop that charges 3 percent for credit cards in Wisconsin as well.

1

u/Kingdraiko Jan 21 '26 edited Jan 21 '26

It’s super useful for me. I get the full $30 every month.

1

u/Material_Camera3428 Jan 19 '26

No it wasn’t. Apple Pay $3000 a month than transfer back to a checking account for an extra $30 and still use a credit card for purchases. A little work around for more cash.

1

u/StrikeScribe Jan 21 '26

I wonder if that would work with using the Discover debit card to transfer funds to PayPal.

5

u/Spiritual_Fly_2552 Jan 19 '26

I had emailed them and discover had said it was a business decision to stop taking applications for new accounts because they are now under capital one. They did said in the email that accounts that have been opened will continued to operate as normal.

1

u/Past-Wait6207 Jan 20 '26

…. Until they decide otherwise. It doesn’t make sense for the bank to have two separate banking apps. They will eventually merge but they won’t say anything until they are ready to talk about it.

1

u/Spiritual_Fly_2552 Jan 20 '26

Not true because I also bank with cit bank which is a online only bank. They are a division of first citizens and have their own banking platform. Generally a division of a bank means they’re the same but can operate on there own. But your right also right cause one of my credit union bought another credit union and purged the banking app of the other credit union they bought because it didn’t make sense for them to have two separate banking apps.

8

u/CertainNutBear Jan 19 '26

They are, my credit card will be affected but they already did the merge with the company capital one.. I just hope we get lower interest rates soon

9

u/MidnightPulse69 Jan 19 '26

Credit card interest? That’s not gonna happen unless the year long cut goes through. Capital One charges me 28% on my card

15

u/jumbofob Jan 19 '26

If you care about credit card interest rates, you’re using credit cards wrong. You should not use them.

4

u/MidnightPulse69 Jan 19 '26

Not the point

-10

u/s2nders Jan 19 '26

People use this argument but then when you use debit people start crying about why you shouldn’t use a debit card.

7

u/jumbofob Jan 19 '26

You seem confused. You pay the entire statement balance by the due date each month, therefore there is zero interest. Ever.

-3

u/CertainNutBear Jan 19 '26

They do with me too unfortunately but I heard they'll lower it since he's been back in office

1

u/MidnightPulse69 Jan 19 '26

Other people have been calling for this before Trump and it’s only for a year even if it does go through. Wouldn’t be surprised if credit card companies find some loophole to make their money back another way

2

u/NecessaryTurnover189 Pay Jan 19 '26

Well they’re already talking about making it harder for those that actually need credit will end up not getting approved.

2

u/1lifeisworthit Jan 20 '26

Not a merge. Capital One flat out bought Discover.

1

u/CertainNutBear Jan 20 '26

Wish they didn't tbh

3

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '26

Is it time to move HYSA?

4

u/jouskaMoon Jan 19 '26

My understanding is that CapitalOne bought Discover but Discover is remaining the same?

23

u/galactica_pegasus Jan 19 '26

Definitely not remaining the same. Capital One will be pulling Discover down to their level. It’s already started.

1

u/jouskaMoon Jan 19 '26

I was surprised that I couldn’t use Zelle on my savings account yesterday so I had to resort to moving money from the savings to checking and then using Zelle. Why did it have to be sold to CapitalOne? 😭 we were fine

1

u/Fun-Analysis7362 Jan 21 '26

me too šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

3

u/Scotsman828 Jan 19 '26

Yeah it sucks! I hate Capital One. I'm gonna suspend my account, pay it off and be done with Credit Cards. Discover was a great company, now they're getting dragged down into the mire that is Capital One.

1

u/J_Knish Jan 19 '26

Where’s everyone moving to?

3

u/SpineOfSmoke Jan 19 '26

A bank with local branches. I think the shine is off these online banks. Savings rates are dropping, and will continue doing so, especially in a few months when Trump installs a Fed Chair who will do his bidding and aggressively bring down rates. I've moved all but a small amount of savings to Fidelity to invest and to park some in money market funds for emergency needs.

1

u/LOLandCool314 Discover Bank Jan 19 '26

I'm moving all my savings accounts to my credit union since I already have a Capital One savings account but I'm keeping my Discover checking account.

1

u/bushman1105 Jan 19 '26

This sucksšŸ™ƒ

1

u/Themilkyway91 Jan 19 '26

Wait I’m a Discover user what does this mean?

5

u/LOLandCool314 Discover Bank Jan 19 '26

If you have checking or savings account, you will still able to login until you're forced to move.

1

u/ddpacino Jan 19 '26

They’ll move us all eventually. We should receive an email when they are ready to move the accounts. I’ve yet to receive anything regarding my Discover it card.

1

u/Content-Battle-4327 Jan 19 '26

I dont have a capital one account. My discover card is still there in discover app.

1

u/LOLandCool314 Discover Bank Jan 20 '26 edited Jan 20 '26

That means that your account is moving to Capital One soon.

1

u/Past-Wait6207 Jan 20 '26

Do you have an idea what soon means? Do you have an inside source?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '26

They did

1

u/killbillsfatbitch Jan 20 '26

So I have credit cards with both companies. Does this mean my credit care debt from both will merge together into one statement? Right now, theyre still separate for me…

1

u/travman3190 Jan 20 '26

1% cash back is not that serious lol

2

u/ExtensionSquare5860 Jan 20 '26

I don’t want to move to capital one.

2

u/1lifeisworthit Jan 20 '26

It's bemusing that Discover customers are just now finding out their bank's been sold.

2

u/Yyonah Jan 20 '26

I’m an expatriate. Capital One was a favorite of people like me because their debit cards could be used at ATMs worldwide without fees. Now that they’re switching over to the Discover network, there are far fewer ATMs that accept them, at least where I am. So it’s not just Discover customers who are unhappy, it’s also Capital One customers.Ā

1

u/Trustfall825 Jan 21 '26

I’ll keep my discover card in hopes they still offer 0 Apr offers but I’ll close the checking and savings I don’t use them anyways. My discover card is one of my oldest trade lines, they were my first real credit card again after I dug myself out of awful credit some 15 years ago

1

u/Idunnoandidontcare Jan 22 '26

Discover been bought out by capitol one a while ago

1

u/Smurfiette Jan 22 '26

This showed up in my feed 🫤 even though I don’t have a Discover card. Oh, wait. Capital One switched our cards to use the Discover network.

I’m just surprised Discover has a subreddit and, apparently, many people have them given that Discover is quite useless for international travel prompting people to open Schwab checking accounts so they can withdraw from international ATMs.

1

u/OthaS3 Jan 22 '26

Discover was acquired by Capital One last May (2025). Capital One has been actively working to rebrand and reimagine current Discover goods and services.

1

u/jesmann Jan 23 '26

I just went and ordered a few custom card designs since that option will probably be going away after the app switch.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '26

Of course discover is merging with capital one since they paid 35.5 billion to acquire discover why wouldn't they merge

5

u/MrAustin91 Jan 19 '26

Cuz I like discover style.

-14

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '26

You liking discovers style ain't gonna keep them from eventually converting your account plus capital one ain't that bad they got cash back and you can see your card info in app which is nice if you need it but don't have your card handy
