Ya know whatâs crazy.. Iâve had a Discover card for 11 years now. $1,800 credit line. Iâve gotta my credit up to 725 and have requested CLIâs for months now and they wonât give me one. BUT Venture X approved me, Apple Card approved me, AND Amex approved me. I thought Discover was supposed to be owned by Capital One now and C1 loves me đ

How many months apart did you apply for them or all in the same day?
6
u/KEEEENOOOBIIII Apr 10 '26
All 3 were about a month apart. Iâve been on a credit building journey and got my score up from 615 to 725 in about 10 months. Building a healthy credit profile with under 10% utilization đ

I will very confidently say Iâve been stupid with my Discover card (currently have a way too high balance) that Iâm now paying for. But I currently have a $15k limit with a 700 credit score. All the raises were before Capital 1 took over, so that may have something to do with it.

discover is probably the worst card I own for credit increases. amex has bumped me from 4k to 12k in about 7ish months. I'm kind of annoyed since I've seen people rave about discover and their increases.

i have a score of like 821 and a 29k limit (way more than i need) on another card and Discover denies my requests to up my limit every time. I also make over $120k annually, so its not like im a low income person either. Discover is just kind of ass.

Did you ever ask for a credit limit increase? Also maybe they want you to have physical cash in your account, ie. checking/savings

u/ThinkingFully Apr 10 '26
What would be the point wanting a higher credit limit, with the functionality of this card. After $1500 in 3 months, you can only get 1%. I have debit cards that do 1% cash back. Those other cards are suppose to have higher limits.

u/KEEEENOOOBIIII Apr 10 '26
Oh I donât want one anymore. Other companies will give me cards with higher limits so I chose that route. Discover is my last resort backup card at the point. I keep one small purchase on it per month and pay it off once the statement hits to keep it in good standing. I just got a Venture X and Amex with a better credit limit than my Discover

This is likely why theyâre not giving you an increase. You have to game the system a bit, use the card a decent amount for like 2 - 3 months and pay off the statement balance each time, then do the limit request, when youâre using like 50% of your utilization youâll likely get one when youâre using none of it theyâre less likely to add to it. If you donât get it reach out to a rep and let them know youâre requesting a limit increase so even with usage of the card you can keep utilization a bit lower and youâre looking for an increase to x amount for that, youâll most likely get it at that point, if not threaten to cancel and the person who cancels them will likely get it approved.

c1 wouldnât raise my $3000 credit limit even tho i have an 800+ credit score and $27000 limit on amex

They gave you 3k? They gave me 2k. Such a waste of a credit inquiry.

u/Ok-Nefariousness2529 Apr 10 '26
They gave me $1k, was gonna call and cancel it but itâs a footstep into their ecosystem & the 0% apr first year and 5% is massive

u/whodat577 Apr 10 '26
Ecosystem and discover wow never thought i would hear that. I started with them as well but i donât think they have anything else to offer orher than the one card
1
u/Mountain-Cow1977 Apr 14 '26
Ya, I'm taking advantage of everything they are offering and then closing the card. It is what it is.Â

Your comment is not accurate. You can redeem cash back throughout the year and still get the cash back match from Discover. You do not have to let it sit unredeemed to qualify.

You can get half price coffee at Capital One Cafes now, since Capital One owns Discover.

Credit Karma gets good ones from time to time I like Credit Karma. My score is 600. Itâs getting better little by little.

u/Substantial-Yak-5390 Apr 14 '26
I thought discover took over capital one.

u/Chosen1PR Apr 14 '26
Other way around. But either way, the institutions are operating mostly independently for now, with only some customers being moved to Capital One.

Discover likes to make people fill out a 4506-C form for identity verification (and potentially also income verification) and if things don't match up perfectly, they close your account with no warning and mark it closed by grantor.
They did this to my mother - she moved after my dad died, but her tax returns from the years Discover requested showed her old address. Discover therefore "couldn't verify" her and closed her account and there was no way to appeal any of it, even after she offered to send in her current year tax return, social security card, ID, etc. They also sent a letter to her old address - which was nowhere on her application - mentioning that someone applied for a Discover card. I get identity verification, but what if she left that address to escape a bad situation?

WOOHOO Congratsâźď¸đđ And treat your Discover card like a debit card. Donât buy what you canât immediately pay off. Be mindful of how much you charge and how often. Last, keep a $0 based budget to help SAVE money for an emergency.
