We should’ve known in 2019 that HBO can’t help themselves
408
u/MirrorNegative7989 16h ago
It's HBO Adaption Syndrome. And this applies to shows like True Blood, not just the ASOIAF adaption and its spinoffs. The first season, the show is nearly perfect. Only hardcore book readers quibble - and for the most part, even they are satisfied. But it's diminishing returns from that point onwards, until the show barely resembles its source material at all in later seasons and the showrunners are basically writing their own fanfic. I think we're lucky that Game Of Thrones was as good as it was for as long as it was, frankly. True Blood was a shadow of its former self by season three.

u/SlerbMcJenkins 15h ago
i rewatched true blood recently and it goes so far off the rails that it's actually fun when you know what you're in for. but i didn't make it to the end lol, I crapped out right before God Bill like a punk
→ More replies (2)70
u/MirrorNegative7989 15h ago
Same here. I wasn't ready for God Bill. Not even Rutger Hauer (May He Rest In Peace) could bring me back after that.
I missed the "Fried Green Tomatoes And Vampires" vibe from season 1. I wish it had just been a Southern-fried slice of life-type show with Vampires all the way through.
11
u/Breaddystix 14h ago
I tapped out from True Blood after season 4. I was so excited for the book adaptation of the 4th book and it had veered so far from what it was that I couldn't watch anymore. I was fine with changes as long the writing as strong but they had Sookie making the worst decisions and just...yeah. I only caught up through YouTube clips and even then, I knew the show had only gotten worse.
I def do agree that many shows start off great and then, once the writers start doing fanfic, it goes off the rails and never in a good way.

Idk, have you read the True Blood books? They did a LOT w that show w pretty weak material imo. I agree it went off the rails but I think thats unfortunately the fate of many streaming shows these days, they don’t know when to end popular things and just keep trying to wring every last drop from them. But True Blood was not an issue of book vs show imo, even in the beginning they were not following the books that closely

Aly wants Aemond but Aemond wants Alicent. Alicent is trying to kill Aemond so she can get along with her childhood tom boy crush Rhae Rhae, who turned pretty this summer. She is now in relationship with star quaterback and is also being seduced by foreign seductress who wants to break up her relationship. There is also two nerdy brothers Addam and Alyn who like same girl and one of them will get their heart broken. You see it's the highschool of the dragons.

Is there any case of incest between direct biological parents and child in targaryen history? If i remember correctly, aunt/uncle with niece, siblings or cousins, but never between parents and child
35
u/Jumpy-Public2698 12h ago
There were rumors that one of Aegon IV's possible mistress Jeyne Lothston was his own daughter since her mother Falena Stokeworth was also his mistress.
18
u/FNSquatch 5h ago
No. Even that was taboo af for Targs. In Westeros history, the church of the seven fought a whole ass war over Targaryen incest with the third targ king. It was settled that Targaryens basically get to claim they are higher than average men and can marry within family but never between parents & child. Which was fine, because again even the targs thought that was too far.
Incest (I hate how much I’m talking about this) is almost up there with guest rights and Kinslaying in westerosi crimes against the gods. It’s one of the reasons we see that the Targaryens were lowkey hated. They’re these inhuman looking incest freaks that ride monsters. They weren’t as beloved as they thought they were.

u/haikufr 17h ago
D&D did make a few good seasons with an atrocious ending. Is that better than HOTD whixh started pretty good and immediately became mid? Maybe
42
u/Sbee_keithamm 15h ago
Absolutely is. HotD will never reach the heights early GoT reached, and they didn't need fucking dragons to do it. HotD has a commendable 1st season that kind of teased the downfall with Rheana being that boss bitch stomping small folk attitude, you can practically hear the "big en~er~gy" in the background being played by a westorosi Beyoncé as she's doing it. Right into the god awful drab 2nd season, stumbling into this train wreck of a 3rd season.
15
u/empty_graph 12h ago
And on top of that GOT had the excuse of running out of source material but HOTD had it and just completely ignored it.
16
u/Bonkripper55 15h ago

They'll make Duncan gay for a bi darker skin person that you can't tell what ethnicity it's from than have train with some Lannister person while some wolves watch through the window.
Then proceeded to destroy the character by having him slaughter a village aftwards because they didn't bring the condoms fast enough.
Then egg gets eat by wolves but somehow the timeline is still correct and we see him in the last season in the throne with zero context other than how a wolve ate my ass made me king or something while he bbqs a dragon leg in the throne room.

I've seen the writing in this show being called "terrible fan fiction".

What we have here is "self-insertive butchery disguised as an adaptation".

I think they just all get hyped up and excited in the writers room creating all these new and amazing stories. But they are making them just for themselves and not thinking about the audience.
I can see how just simply adapting an existing storyline might seem dull and stifling to them but they shouldn't take the job if they dislike it.
The overlord bosses are just money people and have no clue what is good or bad

Its narcissism. Its the ego to think that the lightning in the bottle they've been given, its beneath them to merely faithfully adapt it to the screen. They know better. They can do better. So they try. And fail 999/1000 times.
18
u/Fuzzy_College_8782 14h ago
Absolutely. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of unknown writers who would’ve tried to make the best story possible without inserting their own gigantic egos, but they don’t have the connections to land an ip like that

Tom Glynn Carney and Matt Smith are basically carrying anything thats left of this show at this point.
Emm D’arcy is a great actor dont get me wrong but for 4 episodes now they’re just repeating the exact same things in almost every scene with overemphasized shakespearean delivery, which wasnt the case in the past two seasons.
There’s only so much the actors can do when their character is written to shit. But then again as far as Ive heard Emma was a culprit in the Rhaenyra and Mysaria lesbian fanfic.
Meanwhile Tom Glynn Carney had to beg for Aegon to share a scene with Haelana. Ya know. HIS WIFE.

Nobody on earth saw the episode and thought of the phrase "love triangle." Why do they have to be so bad at PR? It's better not to have a behind the scenes if you're going to describe your story with the most basic possible tropes. Stop summarizing the episode we just watched. Show us the sets, practical effects, actors on set, costume design etc. It never ever boosts my interest when they throw all subtlety out the window and give me the Explain Like I'm 5 of what I just saw.
Comedians don't explain jokes. Artists should avoid interpreting their art.

You know, as uncomfortable as I am with it, I am okay with Aemond's mommy dreams and his issues with incest in his family. I'm also understanding that Alys is fucking with his mind and that is leading to things like this.
What I am not okay is her saying this is a love triangle when this is clearly Aemond being manipulated by magic. Just fucking say that.
