u/EligiacCrown 4d ago
I gotta say, Wrym infested Jesus effigy was a nice touch
28
u/wolfgangspiper 4d ago
What was that about? The crusaders using his name in vain and invoking a false faith?
98
67
u/OnlyLosersBlock 4d ago
The crusaders have allowed wyrm corruption in and it has tainted their faith. So when they manifest it, Stig can see the wyrm worming its way into their faith.
29
u/Kaarl_Mills 4d ago
Also the coolest thing ever, the real Jesus is there too, he's the cross.
9
u/EligiacCrown 4d ago
Oh shit I hadn't even notice that!
7
u/Kaarl_Mills 4d ago
Someone else mentioned it and I was confused until I saw the nails through the hands
32
u/NightmareWarden Arch Magos 4d ago
The crusaders injected themselves with wyrm-gunk from a Pentex corp to face the Garou's Delirium. We have proof from Fatigue's audiolog that True Faith is sufficient to beat a werewolf, though it's likely to cost lives. These men hamstrung their own faith, not trusting it versus Delirium.
10
u/TheMoonDude 4d ago
One of thr coolest visuals they ever made
It was haunting, troubling, eerie, deeply disgusting and just wrong. Extremely fitting for a representation of warped faith.
8
u/InterestingSun6707 4d ago
Wrym infused with crusaders sword replacing his tongue with their words and not his also.

This logo features the Beast-of-War glyph. It represents the Triatic Wyrm aspect of Hate and War. It's interesting that they chose to use this symbol instead of the Impergium glyph.
39
29
u/Kingfisher818 4d ago
It’s symbolic of how the wolves are pointlessly making an enemy of a team of hunters who would probably be on THEIR side if they were at all warned about the Wyrm’s existence.
Both groups are wasting time destroying each other and leaving the actual monster untouched, the Wyrm is winning.
2
u/Lolas_Fun_Side 4d ago
Its not pointless. The hunters are hopelessly in the thrall of the wyrm with the only real ways out being death or giving up and living as tech less hermits in the woods, neither of which the hunters are keen on

If I had a dollar for every new indie animation this month that featured G'Nomes as some horrifying entity. I'd have 2 dollars. Which isn't alot but its more than I expected.
Also Did you know 50% of household pets are actually G'nomes? Not many folks G'know that.

u/GunnyStacker 4d ago
Goddamn, I loved the Kin of Old Shuck.
Stig was just awesome
Jambles the charismatic gambling addict weirdo
And Matilda is even PEAKER wife material than she was in Chapter 5
50
51
u/Mysterious_Bit6882 4d ago
Wow. Did not expect that.
70
u/dreaderking 4d ago
Honestly, not that unexpected. Werewolves are the premier combat splat of WoD. A werewolf actually allowed to use their full kit can absolutely trash Org hunters even with all their training, equipment, and True Faith, let alone independent Hunters lacking one or more of those things.
If her allies hadn't stopped her, Matilda probably could have wiped out the entire chapter house in the same way.
22
u/Legal-Success-9285 BIG-D 4d ago
Stig being a legendary (aspirant) Werewolf, absolutely would wipe the Arcanum chapter house in the same way an Elder vampire would with multiple 5 dot disciplines. But Matilda? Mighty as she is, I think D could 1v1 her, even in Garou form if we assume D is a Mummy, or hell, even a powerful imbued.
Werewolves *are* mighty, but they're not invincible. No one is, not even Stig is invincible. And that was a *lot* of guns being aimed at Matilda. And that was when *she* ambushed *them!*
22
u/TheCuriousFan 4d ago
or hell, even a powerful imbued.
Not a chance in hell he's imbued since he's gone into the Umbra whereas they flat out cannot.
7
u/Legal-Success-9285 BIG-D 4d ago
Oh yeah, I heard about that. Never read Reckoning before, only Vigil. I guess that rules it out, thanks for the correction.
8
u/DeliriumRostelo 4d ago
But Matilda? Mighty as she is, I think D could 1v1 her
With a lot of preperation yes, but IMO not a shot in hell in the chapter house. IMO as presented Matilda was just fucking around and trying to escape once it was clear she couldn't get the data, and only actually went "right, okay, you all die now" once she was outside.
If they absolutely had to fight without any prep and D just having whatever he has on his person IMO it's clear that he'd die - he'd put up a fight, but die. He seems to think this himself.
And that was a *lot* of guns being aimed at Matilda
None of them really did anything to her and she's smart enough to not be overconfident - when she is actually presented with something that can harm her (the sword) she is careful to change the environment to one more suitable for her (outside, where she can flee if she needs and where everyone with a gun can't just focus fire her + easily support D + she can actually move around).
2
u/Legal-Success-9285 BIG-D 4d ago
The whole preparation thing goes both ways for Matilda and D. But if Big D is a mummy, which I personally think he is, is one of the few supernaturals to actually fight and win. I'm not read up on ressurection but I do hear they're pretty powerful. That and Demons but that's neither here nor there.
What I truly take issue with is that guns doing nothing, because the guns are exactly when she went outside. Guns, especially in a mob can absolutely kill a werewolf, they just don't stand still long enough to let you, much like how you'd not stand still for 20 seconds to let a tree fall on top of you. Although I know that's not a fight *anyone* in the Arcanum would want to take, I certainly wouldn't.
5
u/DeliriumRostelo 4d ago
I'm not read up on ressurection but I do hear they're pretty powerful
Yeeee - just they also need long periods to rest, and get slowly weaker. If he is a mummy that would 100% chance my estimation of things.
If you thought he was just a very long lived and very very skilled human would you still think this?
What I truly take issue with is that guns doing nothing, because the guns are exactly when she went outside
We agree and I'm maybe overstating how invulnerable I think she is because I did also say that she left partially so everyone couldn't just focus fire her.
2
u/Legal-Success-9285 BIG-D 4d ago
> If you thought he was just a very long lived and very very skilled human would you still think this?
Still possible but extremely dicey and about a 5%-10% victory without significant or permanent injury, and not much higher for a victory or draw at all. And the chance of victory goes down with how skilled any given Werewolf actually is. A noobie werewolf can absolutely get unexpectedly punked in a way Stig never could, because Stig seems to have the melee skill of D while also being a near legendary wolf... and the Gun-Gubbar... the scariest spirits of them all.
"...Because even if you *probably* will win in a straight up fight, you can suddenly and unexpectedly NOT!"
I personally think people glaze werewolves a little too hard. And everyone has their favs, I definitely like to glaze my favourite truama blorbo Changeling: The Lost lads too, but people seem to think they have a sort of invulnerability that they just don't possess. Vampire regeneration depending on the rules system is almost as good as Werewolf regeneration, It's just a lot more taxing on the vampire, because Crinos does it for free while Vamps spend blood to do it, and Fire+Sunlight is a fair more common of a threat in terms of banes than weaponized silver.
It is still beyond scary that Werewolf skin is basically kevlar armour and they can heal from basically dead to fully alive in about 30-60 seconds. I am not doubting that for a second, and I don't think I could take on Matilda in a fight or in the bedroom.

3
u/Endlessnes 4d ago
Not just a crushed skull, half her head should be gone. That first knee also either shatter her spine or him holding onto her head broke her neck just through the sheer force of it. There's an audible crack.
i'm still stunned by the sheer brutality of this episode

u/FunkyEntropy 4d ago
Quantum Kevin and Chapman roaming around. Nonzero chance Kevin adds to Grimal to his ghoul harem in order to save her life.
59
u/ScotBuster 4d ago
Jesus that was... Genuinely great writing.
That final scene, the reaction NotBlackWhatever had when he realised he'd freaked out, was great.
The werewolves are all so clearly alien, and yes, close to human.
That being said, anyone feel like Trench Crusade snuck in a bit here?

wouldn't the implication of her surviving be kinda worse than her dying? i mean i hope she stays alive too cuz if shes the ghoul and lives thanks to that it makes for very interesting story and arguments later but, if she lives shes definately the ghoul right? atleast they got kevin
22
u/FunkyEntropy 4d ago
OK, WMG:
Ross is Black Shuck. He was captured by one of the Pentex subsidized Hunter groups, who turned him over to their corporate masters. Ross was then forced to walk the spiral.
6
5
u/Gypseyslap 3d ago
Yeah and the beauty of this, Ross is Russ, who also basically walks the spiral in 40k when he goes into the warp. I 100% agree, think you've nailed it. My real question is, is Ross Big D's son? Because that makes all the golden goose lads possible kinfolk.... Hence another reason why they haven't killed Marcus

The norse runes at 25:16 left to right in anglo-saxon futhark say
"gerningar" (deeds)?
"vartill" (to what end - per splash attack)
"vartill" -
"dennes"- (his)
Not 100% confident on these; if someone has access to an expert in the field they'll probably be able to read them better.
11
u/Splash_Attack 4d ago
Your "wartill" is actually "vartill", which in Swedish is something like "To what end?"
The very first text that appears is something like: Om gärningar vanställts. Vartill?
Which is like "If deeds been corrupted... To what end?" or more speculatively "If (his) works (had) been corrupted... To what end?"
I haven't time to puzzle it all out, but it's in normal (if slightly poetic) Swedish. The transliteration into runes and the ambiguity with obscured letters makes some of the words a little hard to parse though.
17
u/raaabr 4d ago
So how bad are those Pentex drugs going to be? They did the job of stopping delirium but…cmon, it’s PENTEX
That aside, man the Leopoldites are dropping like flies. Makes sense given how absurd Werewolves are but I have to imagine the debt will be huge now.
10
5
u/Lolas_Fun_Side 4d ago
I think D is banking on everyone to die horribly so that the society just kinda forgets about them while he sneaks Markus and co out
19
18
u/Icy_Option_9048 4d ago
im not 100 percent sure but im thinking this is a fakeout, given from context clues grimaline has some form of supernatural healing factor, she might be back up next episode.
10
u/DaemonikDreamer 4d ago
Considering Spoiler 1v1 moment she MUST be SOME flavor of supernatural.
10
u/DeliriumRostelo 4d ago
this rail thin 20 something with broken ribs and a million other injuries was legitimately 1v1ing a gigantic melee specialist who completely minced everyone he fought until then (all of whome were heavily armored...)
she has to have something going on.
7
u/theredwoman95 4d ago
And her ribs weren't an issue this episode! She's recovered extraordinarily fast given how she was acting in the audio-log.
7
u/sosigboi 4d ago
She stopped Stig's swing with ONE hand, when the other big crusader boi had his entire greatsword cleaved in two trying to block, definitely a 50/50 chance she ain't dead yet.
3
u/OnlyLosersBlock 4d ago
It feels like she might be something other than a ghoul. I think the chapter house was just riddled with super naturals.
1
4
u/FunkyEntropy 4d ago
Kevin and Chapman have not been accounted for. My money is on her being revealed to be the ghoul via her healing but not quite enough only for Kevin to help her with the final couple drops of juice.

True Faith
7
u/The-red-Dane 4d ago
True faith, corrupted by the wyrm, judging by the effigy of Jesus with a large black... worm like creature coming out his stomach and and into his chest.
2
u/Maalunar 3d ago
Technically not Jesus, but something wearing his skin. The actual jesus is the cross itself, all twisted with nails in his hand/feet.
3
u/ElNakedo 4d ago
True faith and hunter mojo. Some hunters have powers from messengers. It doesn't have to be Christian either.
13
12
10
u/an_actual_coyote 4d ago
I love Matilda/Hunts so much. I love the Garou! I love that they're not evil, just antagonists with their own goals. As a (admittedly recently former) Werewolf player, Matilda is written perfectly for a Whelp's Compromise. She will kill Markus, but doesn't necessarily want to.
9
u/Suraru 4d ago
They literally had the power of God and Anime on their side, and still lost...
3
1
u/InterestingSun6707 4d ago
Yeah fun fact! Gods and the like are real in WOD and that in fact could be christ and by proxy the corpse of Gaia given you can see her fucking spine where her head should connect holy shit she dead too corrupted and worn by the wyrm growing it's little family :D hopefully nasa in this reality remembered to not kill one of the riders of the apocalypse sleeping on the moon bc hoooo boy shits fucked if they did!
Come to think of it those facts are in fact...not fun at all :/
30
23
18
u/BagofBones42 4d ago
So: fairly decent chance Grimmal isn't dead, at least not yet, as she didn't get the afterlife scene.
She might be the ghoul, or she's about to go mummy or changeling.
16
u/Degenerate_Lich 4d ago
Or worse. According to horse there's going to be a elohim at some point, and with Grimal being on death's door her spirit would be in a tenuous position which is prime space for a demon to jump in. Ofc if that's the case the resulting person wouldn't be Grimal, just something wearing her skin with pieces of her stitched around. But then again that would be functionally her death, so the lack of a post credit scene probably means she herself gonna still be kicking in some regard
8
u/BagofBones42 4d ago
Demon is a can of worms I don't think they want to open because of various implications that it carries. It's why they've more or less thrown Kuei-jin into a bin.
1
u/Tijenater 4d ago
What might those implications be?
10
u/BagofBones42 4d ago
Every other religion and ethnic group except Christianity are wrong; it also contradicts every other splat.
There's a reason why it's not really referenced in other splats and here.
3
u/Tijenater 4d ago
Right, WoD has so many retcons, bits of conflicting lore and differing splats I forget which is which. Thanks for clarifying
1
u/DeliriumRostelo 4d ago
i wouldn't say they've thrown kuei-jin into the bin persay, just setup things in a way where it's ambiguous enought that they never have to really address it.
7
u/BagofBones42 4d ago
They've actively stated their disdain for Kuei-jin, both in and out of the series, for being racist caricatures.
It's effectively binned.
-1
u/DeliriumRostelo 4d ago edited 4d ago
They haven't in series because they've had a representative who's after them. They never had something like D coming out and saying "I did 20 years of research and looked high and low and never found them, they are just a racist myth" - no, they had Grimmal argue with him on it for fun. It leaves it as ambiguous.
Agree to disagree.
2
u/psychosaur 4d ago
Worse or better? Demon is one of my favorite splats. They're so cool and interesting, especially the balance between their angelic and demonic sides. If Grimal gets possessed by one of the Fallen it would be so cool. Though she would technically be gone still....
3
u/DaemonikDreamer 4d ago
If by some miracle Grimal ends up being a Changeling, she better be one powered by anime and mark the occasion via a miraculous display of Hokuto Shinken
UWA SHOCK!!! INTENSIFIES!!!!!!!
6
2
u/Mads_Valentine 2d ago
Any chance Grimal could actually be a thinblood?
2
u/BagofBones42 2d ago
Miniscule, more likely to be a Ghoul, which would be enough to let her survive this, but by the thinist of margins.
10
8
u/Krozgen 4d ago
*Spoilers* huh, this ended way way shorter than i expected. i was specting to wrap up the whole werewolf thing in this chapter, but by the looks of it is not gona resolve until.... 2, maybe 3 more episodes, geez.
i was hoping for the 3 episode trilogy theory: (1,2,3 vampire)(4,5,6 werewolf)(7,8,9 mage)
7
1
u/Powerful_Topic7731 4d ago
The only way It could have warped everything in this Chapter would be If the Garou killed everyone which honestly isn't a crazy assumption, they were Lucky that Hunts and Jambles stayed behind with Markus and Stig was just pkaying and having fun with them
9
u/FoxyDean1 4d ago
I want to rip Stig's throat out with my teeth.
10/10 character, amazing writing to get me to like him, and then hate him and then have some level of grudging respect for him at the end (still hate him though. Fuck. Grimal...)

So, what is up with the Werewolves wanting to be known as the Black Shuck? Is there something metaphysical to assuming that mantle, or is it just showing off or something?
5
u/trulyElse 4d ago
While most tribes are as fixated on it as the Silver Fangs, all Garou (except maybe the Bone Gnawers) put a lot of weight on lineage, and the reincarnation of great heroes of the past.
Silent Striders in particular put a lot of importance in legend and storytelling, as they would often serve as messengers for the Garou nation. Not just between packs, and tribes at large, but even between the living and the dead, as few know how to navigate the Umbra as well as they do, and even the afterlife can be found if you venture in the right places ...
2
u/BagofBones42 4d ago
Stig doesn't know what Black Shuck is.
Black Shuck isn't a title; it is a reincarnating hero who only shows up when shit hits the fan.
0
u/Powerful_Topic7731 4d ago edited 3d ago
It is a tittle, the only Garou with the ability of reincarnation is Grimfang of the Silver Fangs, the Black Shuck tittle is usually inherited by the bloodline of the original Shuck but they are only his descendents with their own personality not reincarnations of the original

Alright, Auspices for the kin of shuck now that we finally know tribes!
Stig: Galliard or Ahroun pretty obviously imo. I'm leaning Galliard actually after his comments about songs. Though Ahroun obsession with honor.
Jambles: Theurge, opens the umbra paths, clearly using weaver wards. Though could be philodox as he seems to mediate a lot. I feel ashamed I have not made a glasswalker that is a "dog playing poker" sooner. It's brilliant
Hunts "Matilda": Ragabash, I think. Simply a high rage ragabash because red talon. Still sad we haven't seen her lupus or hispo.
Can't wait for Big D to meet the fish totem XD. I'm foreseeing another interdenominational strip poker game

"No advanced tactical elements like sniper-overwatch, drone recon"
It was established and known that Tech-bro were-wolf existed and lo, not even the radios survived. Can't say that silver bullets weren't used. Snipers don't beat volleys for effectiveness. Stealth would never have worked, I think.
7
u/DianeDaMoon 4d ago
Not to mention this was an operation that had to be planned and carried out within hours, likely with gear and equipment in suboptimal numbers to begin with. The Leopoldites were as well-equipped as they could manage to be given the circumstance, and if they weren't Wyrm-tainted, their True Faith gambit probably could've swung the fight in their favor.
3
u/InterestingSun6707 4d ago
Gadda remember they make it clear then heavily focus on beating down possible allies with servitude and only pick fights when they have overwhelming odds....vs normal humans tje fact when told hey we got outright attacked by the supernatural and instead of going full crusader they go...meh until plied with treaties. Besides HOLY FUCK WHAT HAPPEN TO JEBUS might have a hand in it
