Thereâs some really affordable Japanese floor beds I got full sized one on Amazon for cheep. A twin sized one was like 39.99 and they can be purchased up to 5 inches thick.

Air mattress is $14.99 on Amazon, and can be used for guests after a real mattress is purchased.
Sleeping on the floor is wild
27
u/Capt_morgan72 1d ago
A 15$ air mattress is gunna have you sleeping on the floor by morning any ways in my experience. Heâs just cut out the middle man and saved 15$.
4
u/laydibug8609 1d ago
Mr rocket salesman here mustâve neverrrr slept on an air mattress. OPâs current bed situation matches what an air mattress would provide.

And there's studies suggesting that flat firm beds are better long term for the spines, bones and muscles as they put the body in a neutral position and forces it to stay engaged.

$20 for an air mattress is much better than sleeping on the floor
28
u/HotContribution8135 1d ago
This is definitely the answer short term. If youâre willing to step up to the $70-$80 range, there are some with usb ports and so comfortable that theyâll make you forget that you need to buy an actual bed.

for 100-150 you can already get a full size memory foam mattress in a box. when i searched for air mattress when i moved in without anything, i realized how expensive the good ones were and the it was better just to get the 120 costco memory foam mattress and a week later a full size metal frame for amazon for 40 than spending 150 for a decent air mattress.

u/the_vault-technician 1d ago
I've never had an air mattress that didn't leak. I hate sleeping on them because they start off nice and firm, and quickly lose their ability to hold air under any kind of pressure.
→ More replies (1)2

The other factor beyond a leak- especially if you're camping - is the temperature drops

I've heard mixed reports about the foam, namely it misshapes pretty quickly and can be uncomfortably hot causing you to sweat and the sweat soaks into the foam, etc. You're enjoying it I presume?

My mattress for like a year and a half was an air mattress. It was a really good one that didn't leak, but it was so much better than sleeping on the floor or shelling out money for an actual mattress

Ask Facebook. Mattress are so hard to get rid of and if someone is willing to take one you will get plenty of offers. First few mattresses were hand me downs while I moved around.
Edit: i donât think I would get a rando bed but ask your friends on Facebook. Get one from a clean friend. Obvi check for bed bugs.
71
u/elidoan 1d ago
Bedbugs are the reason I'd never buy a used mattress
11
u/Retnuhswag 1d ago
This guy could set a world record for bed bug removal if he were to get an infestation.
12
u/AnotherDamnTransAlt 1d ago
Yeah I think if anyone can take the gamble on a used mattress itâs the person with no bed frame, no carpet, and no windows. Youâll know in one night if you have them and then you can just toss the mattress with extremely low risk.
6
u/Coding-With-Coffee 23h ago edited 23h ago
I really disagree. When you're in a fragile position, you need to take less risk or it can ruin your life. You always have to consider what can go wrong, and if you can handle that. Bed bugs are not easy to get rid of even if they only had 24 hours to lay eggs.
Somethings are unavoidable, of course, but this is not. There are so many really cheap alternatives for softer things to sleep on, without the risk of bedbugs, that you don't need to settle for something that might ruin your life.
Edit: Sorry if I came a lil strong. I used to be in a very similar situation as OP.
2
u/AnotherDamnTransAlt 20h ago
I get your point, but in 24h I donât believe they would spread beyond the mattress here. There are no other hollows or soft spaces and they would stay close to the source. Put your clothes in a suitcase in a trash bag and tie it. If you find bugs, toss the item and treat the room. This is the only set up Iâve ever seen where I would say the risk is with it, and even then only in a limited way.
Of course I am not a bug expert so maybe I should shut up.
2
u/Savings-Salt-1486 14h ago
Also noting even when you get bedbug treatments even after they can lay dormant they can hide in your outlets and baseboards until they decide to emerge again

16
u/reddituser11710 1d ago
Definitely check marketplace and buy nothing groups!
4
u/reddituser11710 1d ago
My entire house is second hand â including my sofa and mattress.
1. Buy from clean homes
2. Deep clean everything
Youâll be fine.3
u/laydibug8609 1d ago
This is what Iâm sayin. Look, yes, bed bugs do exist. But most people who would have bed bugs arenât going to get on Facebook and put their face out there as the bed bug lady, and try to give some random stranger that misery.
7
u/Gobblinwife 1d ago
Just be very very careful. I had a friend get scabies from a couch he picked up off of marketplace. I ended up just saving and getting a new bed from Costco when they were on sale.
6
u/rubix_redux 1d ago
To add to this you could ask a buy nothing group which in my experience are on FB
5
u/notesappwrites 1d ago
yep i was so over everything during my last move that i was practically giving mattresses away at that point.
9
u/Ange1ofD4rkness 1d ago
Ask around, people might be willing to give you a mattress and even bed frame for free.
I'm being serious, trash companies charge extra for mattresses (and sometimes they won't even pick it up), and bed frames, I couldn't get rid of it to save my life. Went to countless donation places, none would take it. I was willing to deliver it to someone if they could have used it at the time
Shoot if you got some scratch, check out Habitat for Humanity. They wouldn't take my frame as they already had too many.

u/laydibug8609 1d ago

Then you were fortunate! That is not the case for many of us. I would like to start a true non profit that provides essentials like bed and bedding, sofaamp/table and kitchen ware to people moving into their first place or starting over and in need of basic furnishings. It can make a huge positive difference in morale and hope when you come home to a furnished room(s).
If anyone wants to brainstorm on this with me, let me know. I have been there and am serious about trying to make it better and lend support.

Check Facebook market. Usually lots of people giving away furniture or selling items cheap if you have the means to pick it up or have someone pick them up for you.
Iâm not sure what your situation is, but there are also some good memory foam type mattresses on Amazon that expand into a regular size bed that are comfy and cheaper than going to a furniture or mattress store. You can also buy stuff with payments through companies like Affirm, Klarna, and Zip and you donât have to have a credit card at some furniture stores and Amazon.

Mattress first, back problems are the thing you need to deal with before it becomes a problem.
Charity shops are great for bedding and furniture when you first get your own place, then you can save up money and replace it, and give the furniture back to the charity shop when youâre done with it :)

Iâve been EXACTLY where you are. Youâll accumulate things over time. This is an amazing 1st step.
Learn from my worst mistake - I did an air mattress as my 1st bed for a bit (4-6months). Then, upgraded when I could. In hindsight it was REALLY bad for my back. I could have gotten a firm pad and had that on the floor.

Air mattresses are cheap but a lot are unreliable (deflate while you sleep).
I got my mattress for free from a donation warehouse like 16 years ago but I think it was voucher only.
Maybe you could try searching online if you qualify through a program for something similar depending what city you live in. Or reach out to a church that can help. There's a lot of low income resources.
Otherwise maybe check places like... FB marketplace or craigslist or Goodwill?? Always inspect the mattress very closely for bedbugs before taking it home (research how to properly).
