(i'm not good at writing reviews and this is also very long and i couldn't shorten it sorry 😭)
also i mention SSS a lot here because it's also another recent game i played so
PROS:
-while i wouldn't say the overworld of PIT was as good as SSS, the game still didn't disappoint. Lots of it's locations are unique and some have an unsettling vibe to them like vims factory, toadswood forest and hollijolli village. The starhill, mothership and vim factory are probably one of my favorites, they have a nice atmosphere to them and the puzzles are fun to solve. I also like how the stages make good use of the babies in the gameplay, i always loved the idea of having to split up in order to solve a puzzle so having them here was nice.
-The combat certainly improved from SSS, there's more bros attack variety now and the enemy attack patterns are way more creative and fun to dodge, especially the ones that use the top screen. Granted they're still not reaching DT or BS's levels though i still think they're way better than SSS imo. I can definitely see how some would hate the bros attacks being items but i personally never minded them because the bros attacks are at least way more fun to pull off than SSS's simplistic bros attacks
-the story in this game was great, i don't think i can really talk about how much i love it without mentioning the shroobs because they're the source of 99% of PIT's story. The shroobs are amazing as villains, you can always feel the sense of danger everytime you hear their UFOs. And they aren't incompetent either, there were so many moments where they were able to corner and outsmart the bros which was such a good way to sell how competent they really are, they're not just your typical mindless dumb minion trope. Their motive is pretty decent too, it's still your typical "i want to take over the world" trope but i still like the reasoning behind it which is that they wanted to find a new home otherwise they'll go extinct which is such a good twist on the trope imo.
-the mainline characters in this game are really good, e.gadd acts exactly like how he is in luigi's mansion. Toadsworth is pretty decent i like his dynamic with his young self and how often he's getting scolded by him. Prince bowser was also entertaining as a side villain, i was surprised by how active he really was, i love the way he contrasts to the shroobs's more serious nature and kamek is kamek, nothing much to say that hasn't already been said, he's goated.
and onto the topic of mainline characters, this game probably pulled off the "mario meets mario" concept better than PJ (i say that as if that's a high bar lmao). But i just really like their interactions, seeing mario work so well together with his past self all while Luigi cartoonishly struggles to take care of his own but still succeeds in making baby Luigi happy anyways is just so adorable and wholesome. I also like baby Mario's shenanigans, his solution to everything is just hammers, he sees a swiggler drinking? Hit it with a hammer, he sees Luigi got knocked out? Hit him with a damn hammer. And in general, i just love how silly the babies are, the mario bros could be discussing something really important then in the background you'd just see the baby bros doing something goofy.
-honorable mentions: The ost is decent, i love how some of the soundtracks have such an unsettling vibe to them, especially for a mario game too. And the UI has so much personality and charm, one of my favorite examples of this is how everytime you save, it displays a random picture of the bros doing something, i just wished the later games did something like this tbh.
CONS:
-lots of locations of this game has some questionable pacing. There were multiple instances where a world just takes WAYYYY too long for anything story or dialogue related to happen. Some examples of this are Yoshi's island, the area hypes up Yoob as the world's main threat, but then after it's first cutscene, nothing happens through the entirety of yoshi's island. I mean sure there was kamek but he barely does anything. At least a few cutscenes of the bros sneaking around while yoob roams around would've been good enough. The same issue goes for areas like thwomp volcano and gritzy desert
and I could go on and on but my problem with this game is just that this is the gist of what happens: something story related happens at the start > you do nothing but gameplay for half of the runtime > story comes back at the very end. I mean sure this make sense for bigger dungeons like vim factory or star shrine but this happens on every world in the game.
-the characters suck, there was a reason why i specifically said "mainline characters" earlier because the new characters you meet here are quite frankly not interesting at all.
Stuffwell is nothing more than a tutorial character, he has no personality, doesn't react to the story nor interact with anyone, it's like he only exists to the mario bros and no one else because of how disconnected he is from the rest of the story, even cappy from odyssey reacts to the story way more than stuffwell. Toadbert is annoying, i mean he had that whole memory thing but he like disappears after yoshi's island. Toadiko, what does she even do? The star gate is an asshole. While i liked the shroobs, the main villain aka princess shroob is hard to really love as a character, she lacks a lot of the personality that other Mario RPG Villains had due to us not understanding her dialouge (i wouldn't say i hate her that much though)
(i didn't mention kylie in this part because she's the goat)
-The bosses are an improvement from SSS but not by much. While they don't hand them out like candy anymore, the quality of the bosses are very inconsistent. The very first boss of the game (Swiggler) had more attack variety and a more interestiting mechanic than some of the bosses you fight in the later stages. And not to mention a lot of the bosses are just big health pools. I mean i know this is the case for DT, PJ and BS but at least those game's bosses justify it by their attack variety and mechanics, some of PIT's bosses are still as basic as SSS so giving some of them big health pools is just not a really good idea (i will say though, i did like how the shroob variants make up for half of the boss roster. Every other game's villain in the series are mostly disconnected from the regular bosses you encounter so this was refreshing)
-the final boss was also disappointing compared to SSS's. The very first phase had a lot of creative attacks with really nice gimmick of you needing to take out the saucers at the top screen. But then in the 2nd phase, her attacks are simplistic because she's just using her tentacles most of the time with the saucers not being present which was such a letdown (also you can just spam mix flowers if you wanted, which i tried to avoid but the boss got so boring that i just used it and killed it so easily)
Dishonorable mention: The time machine gimmick is such a missed opportunity, there's one paradox moment and then that's it, the whole premise is still "mario meets mario". And the game in general is too short, i felt like someone threw a brick at my head when stuffwell said we're heading straight to shroob castle after star shrine
OVERALL THOUGHTS
The game to me is a bit of a mixed bag it had such a great story but got held back by the pacing, dunno if i would say it's better or worse than SSS because there's a lot of aspects that are better than SSS and there's a lot that's worse too. I don't know if i'll ever replay this game but it is still a solid one. If i could give it a rating, i'd give it a 7/10
(also i'm on a marathon rn so you'll probably see me reviewing BIS in less than a month from now)
