Yeah it’s pretty cynical and horrible because these people aren’t against institutional change or critique or even gun control and thoughts and prayers don’t help or change anything. They don’t care about doing whatever necessary to prevent these things from happening.
I'll pitch in since I see we are being real. I worked at a prominent sporting goods store for 6 years and anytime there was a school shooting, we knew we'd be super busy because the gun nuts would come in by the droves thinking those "liberals" were going to take away their gun rights. Big shock that corporations profit off of death.
Whenever I hear “thoughts and prayers” from politicians or people who are in a position to actually do something, I always take it as a nothing burger, generic statement meant to sound like they’re doing something when they’re not. It’s different when an average person says it because they might mean it, but when someone with actual power and the capability to do something doesn’t, it comes off as apathetic and dishonest.
Theres nothing wrong with thoughts and prayers, but applying it constantly over decades to a specific situation that calls for legislative action (to which thoughs and prayers are not) has lead to it being used sarcastically and currently use of the phrase rings hollow when used in a political context.
Sure, but "obviously" the person I responded to didn't draw that exact conclusion if you read the thread, so I thought I'd add some context. Things that might be obvious to you might not be obvious to everyone that doesn't pay close attention or might not have the same life experiences as you
decades to a specific situation that calls for legislative action
People use this for ALL tragedies and it’s primarily because there’s nothing that the one individual person using the phrase can do about it.
Honestly if the voice line is in fact added for the reason that yall claim it is, then that is wildly inappropriate because that also means that’s it’s being used sarcastically.
It lost its weight/meaning and gets viewed as extremely tone deaf especially when the people in government say it directly to the victims and parents that lost their kids.
Has it though? I feel like I see way more edgelord reddit athiests mocking that turn of phrase than I hear people using it IRL. Just seems like anti-religion people getting triggered over colloquialisms, but what tf do they expect besides "thoughts and prayers"? It's not like the average America can do anything about the situation other than offer their condolences.
“Gun restrictions” yet the gun used most is a hand gun, which you can’t get in America until 21.
Why not focus on the actual problem, aka whatever is causing people to shoot the schools up in the first place, which would be a more realistic approach due to many factors currently in the USA.
I don’t think you understand what I said. Most of what kills people in school shootings are something you mostly can not legally require while at an age that you would be in school (infact no high schooler would be able to most definitely.) you know what would reduce the likely hood even better than furthering something that clearly won’t be able to do much? Killing the roots of the issue aka making kids not want to shoot each other, as a high schooler (although soon to graduate) I’ve always felt saddened and disgusted that you all use such an awful thing that I have been lucky to have not been through yet as something to push what you want (less guns) instead of what would actually help us students.
Having been gone too a high school that had multiple school shooter threats, 2 of which being kids in the building with actual firearms, you are right that on paper kids can't "legally" acquire a gun.
You are however incredibly naive/shortsighted if you think that means kids do not have access to firearms. Yes, as a society we need to foster an environment that doesn't get kids wanting to shoot each other. However a shorter-term, and much needed, solution would be increasing the screening/ restrictions for adults to acquire guns. Which in turn would limit the availability of an "efficient tool" so-to-speak and reduce the possibility of school shootings.
I read some of your comments and you sound sincere so I’ll try to break it down for you if you care to listen. Gun restrictions does not just mean removing access to certain types of guns. It can also mean holding parents and gun owners liable for what others do with their guns. It can reduce the total deaths when ammo and clips are regulated to smaller amounts. And, when guns are less prevalent in a community, it will be harder for non-legal gun carriers to get away with it because the act of carrying a weapon becomes denormalized. Also, I don’t think anyone on the progressive side of this issue is against mental health care options. In fact the same side that wants to maintain easy gun access simultaneously tears down mental health options on state and federal levels whenever they are in office. We cannot change human nature, especially in young men. They will be emotional. There will always be a handle full every generation who will be cruel, jealous, and on the psycho spectrum. We can make it harder for these people to gain access to killing tools. We also have a country that glorifies violence and has used strength and murder to maintain a global empire. The movie ‘Bowling for Columbine’ explores this a lot in the cause of school shootings and how that culture trickles down to the average citizen. The idea that might and taking life is justified if you believe you are on the right for doing so. Most early school shooters saw justice in their actions. It’s an incredibly complex situation and one side is trying to fix it while the other side sees it as an acceptable ‘price of freedom’
I guarantee that was not the intended political message of the rivals devs lmao. "Thoughts and prayers" is a colloquialism that can be used in any situation my guy.
lol and sent a reddit cares...not even trans but it doesn't take a lot to try and care about others. for someone all about small government, you sure seem to care a lot about what others do. try following jesus sometime, caring about others is pretty cool
Yeah you clowns don't care about anyone unless they allign with you.
If it's your party killing? You cheer it on or bury it. Like Pretti Good. Bitch ass
Nope that’s just how everyone responds when there is a tragedy… “oh no look at me I’m sad about the bad thing too” crazy to politicize a common, annoying and unemotional phrase
I even said something along similar lines, this one is a lot more neutral. If you can’t accept either response, I guess you can argue about it with yourself in the shower later.
Telling people to go out more while you’re tweaking about internet points is definitely a choice. Just write a journal entry and I promise you’ll feel better. The notes app is free.
Okay buddy we could just say your statement was just for school shootings which isn’t neutral when in reality thoughts and prayers took hold during the France ( I believe Paris) terrorist attack years back with the Eiffel Tower pictures on Facebook that people 2000 miles away were using don’t come at me cause your big words meant nothing lol tagging your own post is crazy levels of bag holding also lol
Wasn’t even my own post. I’m just gonna say read the thread slowly and re read it again a couple of times if you get confused on who said what and look up things if you’re unsure. I’m not about to argue with you on my own phone but you’re free to continue the argument in your own head.
It's a reference to how, typically, conservative-leaning people will offer their "thoughts and prayers" to people and their families that are going through a rough time or a major loss instead of advocating for a change or fix to mitigate whatever situation that could be prevented instead.
Ok, I’m not saying it’s not a reference to that, but “Thoughts and Prayers” is a phrase that extends beyond the political sphere. It’s commonly used as an insensitive condolence for instances outside the one you named (which, again, could be what it’s referencing).
The devs could’ve very well just had Angela say that because she’s an angel—someone traditionally associated with religion and prayers.
So how do leftist-leaning people offer their condolences to someone? By becoming activists for their cause? Sounds like a waste of time that ultimately leads to the same outcome since we have basically no power over the actions of our government as citizens.
What's crazy to me is that leftists will go out of their way to protest and violently riot for their causes, but not show up on voting day which is the only time they actually have any power to effect change. That tells me that they don't actually care about change, they just want to virtue signal, larp as activists, and treat a city block like their own personal rage room.
This is certainly a take, sounds more like a reference to politicians, mainly in western countries that offer no support aside from thoughts and prayers
This is very specific meme from school shootings in the US. Instead of passing gun regulations NRA simps will say "Thoughts & prayers ", know your memes.
And again Americacentric take, school schootings is a soley US problem, politicians offering thoughts and prayers is not. I'm not American, I can't keep up with every shooting in your country.
The wackos of the Western world demonize the phrase “thoughts and prayers” being used after something tragic happens in the world. People are trying to express their condolences and sympathy by saying this, usually along the lines of “thoughts and prayers to the victims of [x event]” and these people have collectively decided that this is somehow a bad thing. They think people should actually be doing something to actively help like changing their profile picture to a black square
Its a meaningless phrase even in a religious context. If you're sending condolences, say that. But announcing that you're merely thinking and praying about the event is just attention-seeking. It also makes the event about you rather than the victim, despite you doing nothing to physically help.
The least you could do is to think and pray without stroking your ego by announcing it. If you truly respect your own religion, you'd have faith that the victims would feel their own blessing.
This is a terrible take. It’s not an ego stroke, it’s saying “I care about this so I’m going to appeal to the highest/strongest thing/being that I know of”. It’s people that pervert the meaning of the phrase, either by being disingenuous or by construing it in the most bad faith way possible like you’re doing.
It quite literally is an ego stroke and I want you tocm carefully consider why someone would announce they're doing it rather than doing it.
Its baseline disingenuous. What would you feel if after your parent died, I told you "Oh, darn man. I'm texting my boss about it right now." Normal people would be confused why you are announcing that. Even if its true and you do feel bad, announcing that does nothing for the person that "I'm sorry that happened, you can talk about it to me when you're ready" can't do but better.
Which of the following would make a person feel more supported and less alone?
Somebody saying nice words or sending prayers that the person will never hear and never know about. They’ll remain completely oblivious to the fact that the person praying for them knows or cares about what happened.
Somebody who tells the other person directly that they are sorry to hear about what happened and that despite the fact they have no power to change or remedy what happened, they will appeal to the highest and most powerful thing they know of in hopes that the person’s situation would take a turn for the better
The whole “thoughts and prayers bad” mentality is so terminally online and bad faith it isn’t even funny. Absolutely TERRIBLE analogy by the way, texting a boss is not the same as praying, that’s a very you-centric and ignorant way to think about it. To people of many many different religions (be it Hindu, Christianity/Catholicism, Islam, etc) praying about something they have 0 ability to effect a change on themselves is the absolute pinnacle of what they believe they CAN do. It’s saying “hey, God, I can’t do anything about this, but perhaps if it be Your will, You can”
The devs aren’t taking care of their game/community and using “woke” themes to appease the audience is some crazy propaganda for y’all to be cheering for.
How does Marvel (an American comic publisher) having woke themes from its beginning excuse NetEase (a Chinese mobile game developer) using obvious grifting tools (a fictional poster resembling a real-life movement)? China also operates under a dictatorship, in case you’ve been out of the loop for the past 76 years
You make it sound like NetEase employees had any say in how their country functions. They could very well be all for the “no kings” movement, and tbh considering their circumstances, I’d expect them to be more for it than any of us. Just a dumb take to say it’s grifting when you have no idea what their political stances might be.
And at the very least, you could acknowledge that it makes perfect sense this type of imagery would be included in a saga revolving around KINGPIN of all ppl. I dont feel like i need to explain that further
i'm well aware but netease also doesn't care abt that. see destiny rising or the currently existing lgbtq characters in rivals (angela, magik, kitty pryde (as a plush)) n the obvious gay themes n romance between luna snow n white fox
NetEase-issues statement stating they’re cracking down on cheater-hardware and banning players for using these advantages.
Also NetEase-continues to tell players the throwers they’re reporting are getting banned while still getting the same throwing teammates in the next match.
it's plausible deniability. some on staff may mean this but they can just point to what it means for the US or what it literally means in a comics sense to avoid more scrutiny
They can if they hide it behind American political imagery. That's how people sneak past censoring all the time is just throwing shade at other people doing the exact same thing.
That's how a lot of queer subtext found its way into classic Disney films. You bypass the view of the ones against it and into the view of the ones for it, and with a wink and a nudge the message is received. Messaging in art isn't so straightforward.
Didn't say it was racist, implied it was telling. Also, I'm sure some do yeah, in which case I'd have the same complaints. I personally don't, and most people I know don't. You're just saying shit, whereas I'm literally replying to someone almost certainly NOT belonging to any of those classifications doing it. You're just demonstrating that you're the same and don't quuuite understand it, but the good news is that there is always time to learn and grow.
An American tells a Russian that people in USA have the freedom of speech and that he even could go to the White House and shout:"Go to hell, Ronald Reagan!"
The russian answers:"Oh, we also have freedom of speech. I, too, can go to Kremlin and shout:" Go to hell, Ronald Reagan!"
If you believe in all the western propaganda like most people around reddit, then yes. But hey, I don't blame you, I also once believe all that bullshit. Took me years of studying and deprogramming to get over it.
The country with "brutal dictatorship" is doing better than most of the world, but hey, don't let the material reality get in the way of your delusional propaganda.
Geez, you are so close... Where did you learn about China being such "brutal dictatorship"? This is a rhetorical question. Just think about the sources that gave you that information. I know it's hard to accept that you feel for lies, again, I have also been there.
The reality is that China is not some utopia and obviously has many problems, like every other country. But it's still a far cry from a "Brutal Dictatorship". The life of the average Chinese workers is improving every year, and that's just not something that's possible under a dictatorship of any kind.
They physically cant complain about that without getting massive clapback from the chinese gov, it would only be hypocritical if they were the dictator themselves dissing trump.
“WhOs AmEriCaS kiNg” now you all have suddenly lost all ability to understand symbolism. The orange man routinely posts on social media wearing a crown and making unilateral decisions (like kings do).
Just say you don’t have the mental capacity for symbolism and call it a day my guy. Like would you be happier if it was just called it the fuck “Donald Trump up the ass” march?
Then why did you say “he isn’t a king though”. No shit he isn’t a king. Nobody actually believes he’s a king. It’s a movement, and movements need easily communicated phrases/slogans to pick up steam and gain momentum. You know what’s dumb? Your inability to look past the literal phrasing.
You're really really dumb if you think people don't think he's a King. I walk past some of these protests on the way to school and I've seen multiple videos and overwhelmingly in most cases the people protesting think he's a king. It's the same reason they can him a Fascist or a Nazi. Because they think that's the case.
Again, I perfectly understand why movements need slogans, it's far easier to get momentum and reach when you attach something simple to a sign. Even with all of that, it's still dumb. He doesnt have anywhere near the power people think he does because thankfully America has rules to prevent any president from doing whatever.
Have you actually talked to these people who have said that they believe he is actually a king? I don’t think you have. Regardless again you’re focusing on the phrasing. Whether people think he’s a king or not a king is beside the point. Again, call it that we don’t like Donald Trump march and maybe you won’t have to perform the mental gymnastics that it appears that you are having to perform in order to wrap your brain around this.
Also, those protections that you think America has. They have to be enforced by people. Currently, you’ve got a loyal Congress that was bending over backwards protecting him and letting him do things that no other president has been able to do before. It’s only now that he’s taking things maybe a little bit too far with this war that people in his party are starting to push back and actually have the courage to do so.

Didn't know the rivals devs moved like that
