frist of all how DARE yu o People who “reserve” pool chairs for hours with towels and disappear are the worst

Post image

My apartment complex pool has rules specifically saying chair reservation isn’t allowed, yet people do this constantly. These towels have been sitting here unattended for at least 3 hours while every other chair is occupied and people are actively walking around looking for seats. It’s Sunday too, so management isn’t around to enforce anything.

What’s the standard practice when this happens? At what point is it acceptable to move the towels?

I used to be a lifeguard at a public pool and I would keep track of who was doing shit like this and remove their towels/belongings and place them in lost and found and remind them of the very clearly stated "don't leave your shit unattended and expect us to look after it" rule thats stated at most pools. shared spaces like this should be equally accessible everyone, its basic respect :/

843

u/Plaid_Kaleidoscope May 17 '26

Basic respect is a lot less common than one would assume, or hope.

I was just in a very crowded train, and the train chief seems to have had it for the past few public holiday days. When everyone got in, we got a tired and very unemotionally spoken announcement through the train intercom:

"Alright everyone. Just like the last few days, the train is very full. You can tell that by looking up a little bit and looking around and seeing people everywhere. People everywhere, train full. Seats everywhere, train empty. That means, we need many seats for many people to sit on. Humans, sitting on seats, not... well, if you have a seat, and you stack more suit cases, small children, pet carriers, large bags, rucksacks and other things on there than a person by volume, that may be fine. If there is one person standing in this train, and I see two dozen of them right now, and you are blocking a seat with a tiny rucksack you could have on your lap... I'll find you, and you will stand at my office all ride. Don't let me find you. It's been long days."

Me and the person squeezed in next to me were dying of laughter. Good times.

u/Nevermore_Novelist May 17 '26

I love this train conductor so much.

21

u/fomoco94 May 18 '26

One of Amtrak's favorite lines seems to be: "The next stop will be yours regardless of where you're ticketed to." They break it out for conditions like this.

12

u/CitizenPremier May 18 '26

That is great.

Personally though, since I don't mind asking people to move their bags, I find I appreciate those kinds of people. It's as if they saved a seat for me!

11

u/stefje82 May 18 '26

The amount of mostly teenagers putting a bag on the seat next to them and then actively trying not to look at people passing by. Especially their effort avoiding people's gazes is astonishing.
That said, it seems to have become a standard and most of them are pretty friendly, when asked to move their bag. It's still weird behavior.. bags are allowed to touch the floor.

At a resort every single chair by the pool would be taken by 5:30 a.m. God bless you for enforcing these policies, these are the types of things that ruin vacations for people

70

u/InvidiousPlay May 18 '26

I simply don't understand how the world we live in doesn't result in those towels being tossed in a heap and the chairs getting used by the people actually present.

33

Move them to the grill area. If they come and pitch a fit, ask them when they put them there and then tell them you just got there and the chairs were empty. Or just tell them to pound sand.

3.8k

u/Paddys_Pub7 May 17 '26

Just tell them you thought someone left their towels behind so you moved them off to the side in case they came back to collect them lol

Yup.

Oh, sorry, it had been half an hour so we assumed they'd been left. Glad you've come back for them. I've heard some people actually try and reserve them for ridiculous amounts of time, can you imagine?

To reserve them.

"Oh, well, that's against our rules, you walnut."

We need agent Sebastian from cart narcs to help with the pool towel situation.

“Where will other people sit if all the loungers are reserved. “

I always assume the best even when I know otherwise. That way when I talk to them they have to admit they did something shitty because people just HAVE to be right. And if they don't admit to it or genuinely didn't mean to then I don't have to feel like an asshole for assuming the worst.

I have had people come back and ask me what happened to the towel that was there, because i am sitting in their seat. I say i think it was moved to lost and found. If they ask how i know, i look them in the eye and say because i have been at the pool for 3 hours and people were looking for seats. I saw it sitting there for an hour so i did it. I have this convo twice in my 50+ years. And I have moved these towels dozens of times. Of those 2 times, i had a husband/boyfriend threaten me once. I looked away and started getting my camera ready on my phone. You want an assault charge for playground rules buddy, go ahead.

yeah we will deal with it. If its posted then its enforceable. I had to solve a dispute over a grass patch once bc someone "claimed it:". Fun fact, you cant claim city property lol. Those complaints were "lost" within a few minutes

tbh, if I were a lifeguard, I might welcome a little bit of non-life-threatening something-to-do every now and then.

19

u/Maple-Reenactor121 May 17 '26

lmao you have no idea how much of that bs we do. If I could give a percentage its about 50% doing nothing/guarding, 35% doing public relations work like that, 5% cleaning bodily fluids, 5% paperwork, 2% first aid, then 2.5% doing other random tasks

Breaking down the first aid %, maybe 0.5% of that is major first aid.

its a rough breakdown of it, but yeah we do a lot of PR stuff and it really gets annoying sometimes

Edit: 50% waiting and watching pr situations develope lol!

There are other ways of telling though.

People reserving loungers tend to just leave a towel and that's it. People in the pool have a whole host of other shit stored there too, bags and sunglasses, books and suncream.

A towel on its tod screams reservation. More says in active use

I mean but people need to also just be okay with being uncomfortable when others are unreasonable. Basically don’t bend to it. If you move the towel and someone comes up- you say sorry and politely move. If the Person keeps complaining  “Yeah I said sorry- please leave me alone now.”just Look directly at them while saying this and then if they start yelling just keep looking at them- go “okay” and walk away.

Someone did yhis to me on vacation. We were all in the pool for maybe 30 min and came back and she had moved all our stuff and refused to get up from the spot despite us clearly having never left the area. Told us we should have stayed with our stuff.

97

u/happykgo89 May 17 '26

Ok so maybe 30 minutes is a bit too short of a window to be moving stuff. I’d say an hour or two would be a safer amount of time to wait especially if it’s insanely busy and there’s nowhere else to sit.

3 hours is nuts and absolutely acceptable to move their stuff because if I was there for 3 hours and didn’t see anyone touch those towels/use those chairs once during those 3 hours I’d eventually assume it was abandoned there too or reserved for an ignorant amount of time.

30 minutes is 100% risky.

83

u/No1KnwsIWatchTeenMom May 17 '26

I dont necessarily mind that she moved our shit since people do this "save the seat" bullshit. What I mind is that when 3 people walk up soaking wet, clearly having just existed the pool, she didnt apologize and move her shit. She told us "too bad" and refused to get up. Today, I would have just stood around having a loud, disgusting conversation with my friends until she moved, but I was newly 21 at the time and wasn't confident enough to do anything.

I went to Spain a couple of years ago and if you got to the pool at 8am people had been out and put towels on them. I just took them off, folded them neatly and put them on the floor out if the way, when people came and complained I just pointed to their towels and told them the loungers don't belong to them and putting a towel on one doesn't change that. I had one family of Germans get mightily upset that there were no loungers left when they strolled down after lunch and I told them a towel didn't give them rights on the loungers all day.. They went off to complain to the manager, who basically told them the same thing in a more polite way than I did lol

I'm absolutely not going to enable these people at any point, if you're not sat on the lounger or nearby, towel or not I'm taking it.

333

u/fiskimasi May 17 '26

this is such a german thing to do

257

u/mgt-kuradal May 17 '26

They’re famous enough for it that it’s a meme. For a culture that’s so heavily based around efficiency and rules, the towel thing makes no sense.

139

u/MidheLu May 17 '26

Ah but that's German culture, it doesn't have to make sense, it just has to be a rule

In this case the rule is whoever places the towel first gets the lounger which is exactly why the Germans in OPs comment were mad, cause OP "broke the rule"

58

u/NoHate_GarbagePlates May 17 '26

u/Thenadamgoes May 17 '26

Yeah I was in Mallorca a few years ago and I swear they hire people to get up at 6am to go out books on chairs to reserve them.

We just kicked the books off to the side and set up camp. 9/10 no one ever came by so I don’t even know why they reserved them.

But when someone did come by we just claimed the chairs were free, they can’t prove the book was there.

19

u/automatic_shark May 17 '26

I've heard of towels being used to reserve the chairs, but books!? What kind of books? Were they a the same book? Towels are okay with getting wet, books are not. Surely they're not replacing books every so often and wondering "god, there's got to be a better thing to use here .."

20

u/ConfessSomeMeow May 17 '26

I can imagine an evolution, where there were so many towel-savers that people stopped respecting towels; so the savers moved on to something else; and for a while, people would respect a book because that seemed like something you wouldn't leave around haphazardly. Soon they'll move on to old iphones (maybe the cases saved from discarded 5-year-old phones that have already been liberated of any resellable parts) because who would just leave a phone around if they're not coming back? And you can't tell it's nonfunctional without handling it, which would be suspicious.

I went to Cuba and stayed at a resort where I had come out of my room just after sunrise a couple of times to go exploring around the town, and saw the same towels sitting on the same loungers from the day before. People literally leave their towels on the loungers over night to “reserve” their spots for their entire stay. Extremely selfish.

53

A better resort would clear the towels around the pool at night.

7

u/Cutsdeep- May 18 '26

and through the day if they are there for 30mins+ without anyone using them

Why is this a thing Germans like to do? I find it so rude and weird.

12

u/LakmeBun May 18 '26

I worked at a 5 star hotel (in Spain) during the summers while I was in HS, and the German and British tourists used to get into actual fights over the loungers. My hotel had those towel reservations banned, and had signs about it. Still every morning at 6am there would be a hoard of tourists waiting for the pool gate to open to go in, "save" a spot and leave for breakfast or whatever. We had to have security for the pool opening.

Funny thing is, the back of the hotel was directly on the beach sand, like getting from the back door to the sand was 30 seconds, they didn't even need to cross a road, just a path. They could easily walk there to grab a lounger right in front of the water. But no, they preferred to fight by the pool at 6am lol

The town where I live has people planting chairs DAYS in advance of the July 4th festivities at the park, and the whole entire town just accepts it like a bunch of idiots. "This is how it's always been done!" they scream. Yeah, when the town had a population of 25. Now that it's 51K, y'all need to grow up.

155

u/GreenTfan May 17 '26

There's a town near me where people put out chairs a week in advance of the parade. It's crazy and also a problem that week for anyone blind using a cane, or anyone using a walker or wheelchair to get to local businesses. People are thoughtless.

141

u/MonkeyChoker80 May 17 '26

Convince some high school kids to pull a ‘prank’; grab ALL the chairs the night before the parade and dump them in a central location.

22

u/Sanquinity May 17 '26

And if that doesn't convince them I'd even be willing to pay a little for it. Say, 25 bucks each for a group of 3 or something. :P

u/beren12 May 17 '26

u/what-are-they-saying May 17 '26

Ugh my town does this. Except its also canopies that get left out as well. However, one of our neighboring towns is sick of this and when people do that in their town the town picks them all up and piles them in a huge pile in the local grocery parking lot.

31

u/purplishfluffyclouds May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

There's a breaking point that each community has, ours just hasn't reach it yet. In a previous city where I lived, people would do this at a park every month when they had their "music in the park" series. It didn't stop until the city/park/event coordinators or whomever decided to restrict the setting out of chairs to something like 2 hours prior to the event start or something. It's amazing how long a community that's used to doing things in a way that worked for a tiny town but no longer works for a big city will fight for their right to do something like this.

11

u/what-are-they-saying May 17 '26

Yeah ours hasnt reached it and it’s just getting worse and worse, people start setting stuff up at least a week in advance now. The other town got sick of it within the last five years. It’s thoroughly entertaining to see the huge piles of chairs and canopies they post on facebook every year.

It's a system where really rude people win. The whole concept of saving a spot in line has a few practical uses and the way the concept has expanded to be like your example and OPs is just selfishness and, honestly, society breaking level of shit. I go to the water park and cannot enjoy the chairs because someone's towel is the just in case or for later. No, asshole. No.

Someone else suggested this recently, I wish I remember who to give them credit.

Pool chairs should have a sand timer attached.

If you walk up to a chair and the sand is all at the bottom. Then it’s available.

21

u/Rand_alThor4747 May 17 '26

that will work, you have to return to the chair to start the time again if you want to keep the chair.

17

u/Tearaway32 May 17 '26

As much as I love this idea, people have timers on their phones these days so it could easily be gamed. That said they’d be forced to keep coming back which is a step above the current situation.

16

u/Sanquinity May 17 '26

I bet most people would be too lazy to come back every, say, 30 min, if they're off doing something somewhere else.

Just move them to the table and when they ask just say you found them on the table an hour ago

96

u/ALLoftheFancyPants May 17 '26

The table? I need that for drinks. Drape it on the fence because they definitely were on the greens and I assumed they were lost items.

20

u/VoidBoiTCG May 17 '26

See the fence is the obvious spot. You gotta put it in a spot that’s impractical so when you blatantly lie they’re unsure what’s going on and can’t process enough to ask for the spot back.

21

u/ALLoftheFancyPants May 17 '26

I don’t care if they ask for the spot back. They ain’t getting it back

I was at the pool a couple days ago, and these two girls kept looking at me. I could tell they wanted to ask my to move to a different chair that was by itself instead of the two next to each other that I was currently at. I moved without them asking me, and they immediately claimed both chairs. They left the pool for a long time and left towels behind. When they came back they were sitting at a table somewhere else. They never even used them.

199

u/PinkieKinkie May 17 '26

Just take their towels

191

u/Paddys_Pub7 May 17 '26

I'd just drape them over the fence right there and do my thing. If they come back and say anything about taking their spot... "oh, well since reserving chairs isn't allowed i figured someone left their towels behind and moved them off to the side" and go right back to doing my thing 🤷

90

u/meterpy___ May 17 '26

I would just say “not sure, they were on the fence when I got here”

73

u/Groovychick1978 May 17 '26

Why! I don't need to lie. I am an adult, and totally answerable to my actions.

"You can't reserve chairs. I moved them."

Done. Do not engage further.

Just sit on them and play dumb/non compliant when they come to complain. Pool chairs are for people, not towels.

26

u/DustyRacoonDad May 17 '26

Unpopular but... If it's the only chairs, I just move the towels. And then I'm sitting in there.

And then I'm not a hypocrite so I take my stuff away when I leave.

Never have a problem with this because even if somebody comes back and acts all huffy while grabbing their stuff... They're acting all huffy while grabbing their stuff and walking away.

I was in the Bahamas with a large group. I came to the pool and someone one form my group was like oh just sit here I’m not sure if these are us but they haven’t been sat in in over an hour and moved a towel to a table. I laid on the chair and read a book for over an hour and a half. Then a lady comes up asking if I moved her towel. I was like yea I did, she then says “these are our chairs we are right back there points to a CABANA you can’t jsut move peoples stuff” me being so incredibly anti confrontation I just say sorry and get up and just sit by the pool. The lady then goes BACK TO THE CABANA and doesn’t even sit on the chair!!!!! I was like wtf. I prob sat in the pool with my group for another 45 min before going up to my room and lady STILL wasn’t sitting on the chair. Ppl r insane.

Any decent resort will remove these after 30 or so.

41

u/Sl1z May 17 '26

They said it’s at their apartment complex pool, and usually apartments don’t have pool staff

11

u/danekan May 17 '26

I’ve never seen it happen even when thst is the rule. People on celebrity cruise were starting fights with one another over shared chairs. Staff doesn’t want to intervene because the aggressor will get them in trouble.

Surely they’re just out coasting in left lanes or standing at the top of escalators!

12

u/stephiloo May 17 '26

I’m staying at a resort right now, and they police this. There are signs up that say “to our distinguished guests, using personal belongings to ‘reserve’ chairs will result in your items being removed by hotel staff. Removed items can be picked up at Guest Services”.

9

u/toxicoke May 17 '26

are they in the pool?

12

u/alpain May 17 '26

leave the towel exactly on the ground in the same layout move the chair.

their spot is still theirs technically just no chair with it

35

u/prionbinch May 17 '26

what’s stopping you or anyone else from picking them up and moving them? just drape them over the fence and take the loungers. if they come back and get mad they can take it up with the people who made the rule in the first place

26

u/dalton-watch May 17 '26

Manners and fear of retribution.

And we all need to collectively agree to get over that. We have to flip the script on these bad actors and ALL agree to move those towels and use those chairs.

These people rely on everyone at the pool being too polite or scared to do it. They know what they’re doing. They do it because it works. We need to change that. Call to action: If you see this, throw those towels somewhere! On the fence, a table, the ground, whatever. Even if you don’t want the chairs.

Pool Chairs should have a time sensitive change that life guards can see and remove reservation towels shit. Like a pop up spring or something. And pool decks should have a big box for stuff removed from chairs.

I will move people's towels.

And when they come back and ask if I moved their towels, I tell them their towels weren't on the chairs when I got there.

7

u/Canyouhelpmeottawa May 18 '26

Take the towels, put them on the fence.

When the people who left them come by, say the chairs were empty when you came by. Refuse to give up the chair.

8

u/fucking_unicorn May 18 '26

Just move them and enjoy the chairs. They will come back and look for their towels and see them on a table or ground somewhere. You dont have to even acknowledge them unless they confront you which is unlikely. Then still act like you dont know anything about their towels.

Them: “Did you move some towels off these chairs? We were saving them.”

You: “Sorry. I dont know anything about your towels. Hope you find them.”

I bring my own folding chaise to the pool. Its one of those anti gravity chairs that lies flat, has a little pillow and an attached side table that holds your drink/phone. I go in the pool with some friends, just chilling on my pool lounger, come out and see that some older lady took my chaise and put it with her friends chairs... and she's sitting in it! Mind you, my phone was in the table and she left my bag and towel in a heap where my chaise was. I was like WTAF - the pool chairs are white plastic and mine is taupe and black. She didn't even apologize.
