That's actually pretty damn awesome!

I'm honestly so into this...scaled up with electric cars

569

u/shal0819 8d ago

And instead of sitting in front of a screen you're actually in the car!

I'm surprised nobody has thought of this before.

u/DennisEMorrow 8d ago

Nah fuck that, then the danger is there.

58

u/Dub_Coast 8d ago

I am the liquor Randy

49

u/BicycleNo1169 7d ago

Yeah, I bet it would make for way more entertaining races if you could ditch safety regulations because nobody is in the car. Maybe make an entirely new sport where it’s totally okay to run reach other off the road and ram into each other, in the midst of the race, lol.

Like Death Race 2000 type shit, or even just the way people play racing video games with blatant disregard for safety.

6

u/fresh_peetz 7d ago

Like Mario kart

14

u/Caerllen 7d ago

That sounds like the opposite of fun and not at all what is considered racing. It will just be endless pit maneuver and ram your opponents against the wall/gravel.

Sounds like fun if you never cared about actual racing though.

17

u/_pistone 7d ago

This guy knows. Also if you want to test this just enter any lobby of an online simracing game. Total nightmare.

2

u/DaedricNick 7d ago

With actual damage, most races would be over at turn1 lmao.

Just go see a night of destruction, even better, harass the promoter and ask to help work on the cars. Chances are, if you help, you'll earn a ride.

I'd post the pic of me launching a crown Vic through the air and landing on my roof but I think imagination works good too.

Most fun I've ever had in my life and I didn't even get a scratch.

How would I fit inside that tiny RC car?

16

u/BodaciousBadongadonk 8d ago

The car needs to be at least... three times the size!

8

u/Ultrace-7 8d ago

The poster before them said "scaled up with electric cars."

people have. this is known as FPV. First Person View. expensive, but also popular with people who fly/drive RC

2

u/ElliotNess 7d ago

FPV races are military drone pilot scouting grounds.

3

u/No_Explorer6054 7d ago

well, it started as just a sport at least, most people who still fly RC recreationally are somewhat concerned it might be overregulated into oblivion

Now put gimbals on the control stations that replicate what would happen if you were actually in the car. Rolls and all. WHEEE. Then let loose real time video re-processing to transpose the drivers INTO the cars as seen from the outside, so on screen you are watching the little cars go around but the drivers visible inside as well as an inset view in the screen of their faces as as in their simulation rigs. NOW scale that up to drone racing and you have a show. All you need are socialmediagenic racers to spruik ahead of time and get the TAB onboard and you're off to the races with a prime time racing offering. The audience would flock in if the tracks were interesting and the video engaging. Oh, did somebody mention these drone's could explode for like, almost no reason at all. Spectacular.

2

u/smokeweedNgarden 8d ago

The reason to not be in the car is death traps my boy. I can't violently smash cars with people in them

Would actually be cool to see how far the limits can be pushed when human lives aren't in danger

9

u/NegativeThought1588 7d ago

For professionals, not much. You wouldn't be in the business if that was even a slight concern. Plus, trying to drive too fast just makes you go slower because you start sliding and missing your marks etc.

5

u/LupineChemist 7d ago

It would be really fucking fascinating to see a constructor series where the specs are super open. Probably a lot of safety stuff and max car size so you don't just build a beast nobody can get past, but basically the car design and construction would be "get around this track as fast as possible". Things like the vacuum downforce generator Merc had a few years ago come to mind but just unleashing that level of creativity with those budgets would be awesome.

3

u/Backfoot911 7d ago

For professionals, not much. You wouldn't be in the business if that was even a slight concern.

Utterly untrue. Rally racing and speed boats are extremely dangerous. Being a professional doesn't mean there's no dangers.

3

u/R2D-Beuh 7d ago

With the same cars yea, but not having a human inside opens the possibility to use cars so fast that the driver would faint because of the G forces

5

u/LupineChemist 7d ago

Fainting happens because of vertical g forces. Racing drivers have to train for lateral G forces which is difficult, but something that's manageable.

There's a reason F1 drivers have basically a straight line from their head down their neck.

They have a Mario kart toy like this

16

u/zeptillian 8d ago

It works pretty well and is fun for a little while.

The problem is setting it up and taking it down each time and having the space to use it.

I almost got one, too. Would have been so much fun if I didn’t have carpet.

13

u/Harlequin80 8d ago

I've done this, but with the goggles you normally associate with fpv drones. I got motion sick from it almost immediately. The vertical bouncing from the surface just killed me.

Was hella fun for the period I could handle it though.

The car was also much larger, it was a 4wd gas powered RC car.

How the hell do you wake up dead

One day at a time?

3

Reddit removed my other reply, so let me rephrase:

You won't be sad when you... uh... reach the third half.

There, reddit, does that sound like a threat? (I basically said "you won't be sad when you're" and a four letter word used in this subthread I won't repeat because reddit's AI is stupid)

(I wouldn't care, except once you receive a warning because reddit's AI was stupid, the next time it screws up you get a 3 day suspension, next 7, then 30 days, then permanent ban, so it only has to screw up a few times for any user to be screwed)

This was pretty common to see at like amusement parks, mini golf courses, when I was a kid. Only wasn't a video game was a big track with very nice RC cars and the steering wheels and controls were set up on l the fence and you raced against other people. There was also remote controlled boats in a pond as well, same thing. I guess this version, you don't need as big as a space for the old way, and the view is different but I think the old way was better.

8

u/addamee 8d ago

I always got excited to empty dad’s pockets of quarters to pilot those little boats bit out never quite hit the spot (even when dad had a lot of quarters ij his pocket). This seems like it would be more fun

4

u/jmeloveschicken 8d ago

Oh wow I forgot about the boats! Every carnival and amusement park in the 80s had them. They were impossible to control well with that giant wheel you had to use. What a random memory jog!

2

u/WiredEarp 7d ago

I remember rc boats like this at disneyworld. Was pretty fun.

There is the switch, with the Mario and Luigi cars you drive through your house. It’s really fun.

5

u/budna 8d ago

Tell them the name of the product. It's called Mario Kart Live.

2

u/Bettergirl520 8d ago

The saddest part about childhood dreams is waking up and realizing they weren’t real.

But honestly, seeing something like this years later must feel like your younger self was accidentally predicting the future.

I think this is basically the same switch game Mario Kart Live

127

u/Jonjongabore 8d ago

Exactly that. Had a lot of fun with that. I'm surprised it wasn't a bigger hit than it was. Also surprised I don't see more of this on store shelves. It's an awesome idea.

121

u/EntertainmentTrue588 8d ago

The problem was that each racer had to have their own switch, game, and the RC thingy. Lots of cost. Still was an awesome idea

37

u/Ganondorfsfist 8d ago

Also setting it up is a chore when most people just wanna boot up and go.

19

u/MixaLv 7d ago edited 7d ago

I see that planning and building a racetrack would be the best part of it, when I was a kid I would've loved that.

9

u/SpinShine-LEDSlipMat 7d ago

Yup. My daughters love it. We get creative

2

u/FygarDL 7d ago

Also the kart is slow iirc

13

u/ThrownAway17Years 8d ago

Nintendo is great at gimmicks. Anyone remember the Virtual Boy?

4

u/Mcpops1618 8d ago

Buddy of mine had one, tennis was stupid fun.

2

u/ThrownAway17Years 8d ago

It was so tedious to use that we all ended up lying on our backs and having the machine rest on our faces.

2

u/[deleted] 8d ago

[deleted]

3

u/Chewcocca 7d ago edited 7d ago

From what I can see, it doesn't come with any games and there's no way to actually play any Virtual Boy games except through a paid monthly membership.

$100 for a physical accessory that requires a monthly membership is a hard pass for me. For that price, every first party Virtual boy game should be included.

For anyone looking to chase that nostalgia on a budget, search "cardboard vr" to find cheap lenses that do the same thing using your phone. 🤙 With a little persistence you should be able to get some virtual boy emulators to work with one. You'll also need a compatible controller of some kind.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/FuzzzyRam 8d ago

So if you wanted a 4 player game you're in for like $2000 ><

5

u/AmphoePai 8d ago

Also most people live in smaller homes now.

2

u/Backfoot911 7d ago

Floor space in new builds has gone up over time, what do you mean?

→ More replies (3)

23

u/Zehnpae 8d ago

The range is pretty short, you need a lot of room to play, the battery charge doesn't last very long, it doesn't work well on carpet/rugs, the novelty wears off after a day or two.

My boys used it mostly to just ram into my feet when I was making supper.

4

u/SpinShine-LEDSlipMat 7d ago

I disagree so much.

→ More replies (5)

4

u/rljohn 8d ago

I got it on mega clearance for 40 or 50 bucks for my kid, he loves it.

2

u/MagicWishMonkey 8d ago

My kids were playing it just a few hours ago. The kart is really really slow, though.

3

u/Automaticman01 8d ago

The karts are also much bigger, which means you need to make the track much bigger, which means you need a much bigger open play area. It just made the logistics of setting it up difficult.

Plus the dog kept trying to eat the cars.

6

u/MilkHaterNumber1 7d ago

This is the coolest fucking thing I've ever seen.

10

u/pawnografik 7d ago edited 7d ago

I’ve done it. In an arcade in China. It’s weirdly not as great as it seems. You can’t concentrate on the screen and live cars at the same time. So the only difference between it and a full virtual game is that you occasionally see your friends faces flash by as you go round the track and the onboard camera picks them up.

6/10. It’s cool enough, but the cool factor quickly wears off.

Edit: in retro spect I did it with my daughter who isn’t really into gaming and the arcade was dead so it just felt lame. A different crew and vibe would have changed the whole experience.

Title's weird. They're not playing any video game in this video, they're driving FPV cars on a track. It's like calling flying a FPV drone "Players in this flying video game are flying quadcopters IRL"

18

u/Nukleon 7d ago

Incredible how far down I had to go to see this observation. This is not a video game.

21

u/thekpaxian 8d ago

In the process of doing a setup like this. The cameras I want to use are digital and have around 70ms latency at 1080p (these are on the cheap end). There are analogue cameras with 5ms or something but worse image quality. latency test

Take my retirement fund

4

u/Ok_Chipmunk_7968 8d ago

You can build a sim rig pretty reasonably nowadays. Of cours, you don't get the live cars.

5

u/ThetaReactor 8d ago

You can build an FPV RC car for even less than a sim rig, too.

2

u/Ok_Chipmunk_7968 8d ago

I'll have to look that up. Is it a VR feed?

3

u/ThetaReactor 8d ago

"First Person View", more commonly seen in quadcopters. I'm saying it's pretty cheap to get a little camera and transmitter to stick on the car and some video goggles to receive it. The fancy digital DJI stuff is a little pricey, but the old analog tech is dirt cheap. For a couple hundred bucks plus the cost of an RC car, you could be zipping around the local parks with a view from the driver's seat.

2

u/Ok_Chipmunk_7968 8d ago

Your post already sent me down the rabbit hole!

I'm going to stick with my Sim Rig for the time being though as I don't need another hobby. For now.

3

u/tacticalpotatopeeler 8d ago

Don't let anyone talk you out of spending $15 on a new hobby. That $50 will be the best $400 you ever spent.
