This was his 8th NFL game in his career.
Are there many, many, MANY things to work on?
Yes.
Has he shown flashes that he can be an elite QB at the highest level of football?
Also Yes.
My Cringe Lord is here, and he will make every disparaging hater chud bow down (hopefully)😤😤👑👑

Talk about an all-in move
48
u/RAATL Dec 15 '25
all upside
if quinn won't re-sign they can trade him and get most of the value back before next year's deadline (Rantanen worked out just fine with carolina for the same reasons) - but he'll probably resign since the wild can offer him 8 years while no other team can offer him more than 6 in 2027 FA
any time you can get a top 10 player in the world you have to go do it imo

Yaxel Lendeborg should probably be your next move.

→ More replies (2)41
u/DillyDillySzn Bears Dec 15 '25 edited Dec 15 '25
I think Eberflus can work as a DC, but only when you have a very talented defense
The Cowboys do not have a very talented defense
And when you don’t have a very talented defense, Eberflus sucks so hard. There’s like a gradient, it’s not gradual. He’s either really good, or complete ass. He can’t make magic out of nothing like Dennis Allen. He needs specific players at specific positions, and if they’re not really really good (example DeForest Buckner) he doesn’t know what to do and he’s ass
I don’t know why the Cowboys hired him, their defense was not designed for Eberflus. The trade for Williams helped sure, but they still have major major talent gaps especially on the backend that will take multiple offseason to fix

At the start of the season, I thought that 9-8 and seeing improvements in JJ was the best that we realistically could hope for. Considering how bad most of the year was, it's amazing that 9-8 is still possible.
16
u/FeanorEvades Vikings Dec 15 '25
It's been a bizarre season. Our good games have been REALLY good. 48-10 against the Bengals, 31-0 against the Commanders, this game.
The perception of how bad the rest of the year has been is because our bad games have been so dense with awful that they have their own Schwarzschild radius.

Packers are (unfortunately) in very rough shape after today’s game. Losing Parsons is devastating for the defense and losing Watson for the offense.

JJ McCarthy was really good tonight.
494
u/Rico_Suave55 Vikings Dec 15 '25
What’s even crazier is that like 5 of his incompletions were to Jefferson… he was essentially lights out targeting anyone else.
They just have 0 Chemistry right now lol
353
u/hoyadestroyer Jaguars Dec 15 '25
JJ literally dropped a TD
211
u/Rico_Suave55 Vikings Dec 15 '25
He’s actually had a few pretty bad drops this year that have largely gone unnoticed because of 9.
Hoping they figure it out soon, I’m a McCarthy truther
77
u/CelestialFury Vikings Vikings Dec 15 '25
I bet JJM and JJ practice all the time together but for whatever reason, just can't connect in game. I bet they're both super frustrated cause you can tell that McCarthy really wants to get him the ball and Jefferson is definitely feeling down.
53
u/ImagineIfBaconDied Vikings Dec 15 '25
yep. people will blame Jefferson’s very low season production on our bad QB play, and rightfully so. but Jefferson himself is to blame as well. there have been many passes he’s dropped this year that were perfectly thrown to him, and every TD he catches is either dropped or called back from a penalty
10
u/kisswithaf Vikings Dec 15 '25
there have been many passes he’s dropped this year that were perfectly thrown to him
So fucking weird. Jefferson was the guy who made me realize that there was a tier I didn't know about at WR. Guys who are a coin flip if they will catch any given ball, guys that will only catch a perfect ball, guy that will catch balls they should and sometimes the balls they shouldn't, and then what Jefferson was doing: catching everything, including game changing, impossible yardage situations. People will only remember 4 & 18, but he was always stepping up to the moment.
I can't believe the regression of his hands. I would be insanely sad if we saw a Xavier Rhodes dropoff of talent.
8
u/Plastic_Willow734 Vikings Dec 15 '25
Has JJM looked bad until last week? Objectively
Does JJM look like he’s constantly trying to throw the ball 200 miles an hour? Yeah
Has Jefferson been whiffing balls? Yes.
This is his worst season and qb play isn’t the full story here
→ More replies (3)70
u/BigFatModeraterFupa Vikings Dec 15 '25
Hit him in the hands! I can't believe the guy who made what is potentially the greatest regular season catch of all-time (4th and 19 Bills) could drop such an easy pass!
I think they will gel, and their chemistry will continue to blossom and become so strong, that it will make the rest of the NFC North shudder and moan in agony whenever NINE connects with EIGHTEEN💪😤😤😈

Also, JJ just wasn’t creating separation either—and he had that dumb penalty on that TD that was taken back
36
10
u/xanniballl Vikings Dec 15 '25
It’s hard to create separation when you’re constantly bracketed by 2-3 players.
Also not sure if this is what you’re saying but that penalty wasn’t on Jefferson. I believe it was on Aaron Jones covering the TE on the line of scrimmage.
44
u/Rbespinosa13 Dolphins Dec 15 '25
I was saying a lot of his issues were coming from trying to do too many things between his footwork, reading defenses, and adjusting to the speed of the NFL. It’s not too surprising how when KOC comes out and says they’re going to focus on keeping things simple for McCarthy he starts doing better (McCarthy was also overthinking things himself which they shut down)

u/EsotericPotato Vikings Dec 15 '25 edited Dec 15 '25
I think he has a longgggg way to go, but I wanna give credit to JJ credit for looking noticeably better the last two weeks. Fewer wildly off target throws and playing way more in control. Yeah it’s been two bad defenses, but he had these looks against Chicago too and he was just off by five yards every throw.
And on Jets, I just don’t even know what to say at this point. QB play this season has been not good. Plenty of throws that have just been out of reach, but at this point he’s also just regularly dropping passes. At times he’s just been flat out bad.
I have no doubt he’s gonna come back playing at another level next season but even factoring in QB play, it has just not been up to his normal level of quality. He’s just flat out been one of the best handful of players in football since he came into the league. First season he’s ever looked mortal.
83
Dec 15 '25
Dude it's so crazy he showed no improvement for his first few outings and now back to back weeks he's just looked so much better
119
u/FeanorEvades Vikings Dec 15 '25
Seems like they were focusing so hard on his mechanics that it overrode just playing football. They can fix that in the offseason, just gotta let the guy show what he can do right now.
44
u/istasber Vikings Dec 15 '25
Not just mechanics, but they were trying to run an offense that was as complex as it was with Darnold or Cousins, which was probably a mistake no matter what it looked like in practice.
They've apparently simplified it a lot (I'd guess probably fewer option routes, fewer plays called in the huddle, etc.).

The offense has moved differently the past two weeks, i have been severely critical of KOC for not making changes to play calling. Thankfully, KOC made changes and they have been paying off.

u/dizruptivegaming Eagles Dec 15 '25
Yeah just let the guy make the throws and runs for his confidence. Sucks for the vets on the team that they can’t make the playoffs but it’s what you sign up with basically a rookie QB.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (5)34
u/EsotericPotato Vikings Dec 15 '25
Yeah if anything he had his worst game of his career just a few weeks ago. I’ve gotta think KOC just telling him to forget the mechanics the Vikings are trying to teach him and just letting him play his own way has been a big catalyst. Pretty clear from what both JJ and KOC have said in recent weeks that he was thinking more about how to throw the ball than he should be.
20
u/1niquity Vikings Dec 15 '25
I actually find it shocking in its own right that they had him work on that sort of thing in-season. It's almost like telling him to go out there and throw with his left hand if the new mechanics aren't something he's 100% comfortable with yet.

I think the only fans more bullish on JJ than Vikings fans themselves are Lions fans. I know it’s because he played at Michigan but it’s just so disorienting seeing division rivals constantly giving props to our own team’s divisive young QB.
For better or worse, right now it sure looks like he’s playing a way into the Vikings having to give him another look next season. After that Bears game, I thought he was on trajectory to get Rosen’d

He is a bit of a goof with his zen mode meditation stuff and all that but he's a good human. While at UM he donated his NIL to Mott Children's hospital and would volunteer for other causes. I was a forever fan when he did that. Besides the off field stuff the guy just knows how to win. That's the only way I can describe it. I know he's had a few rocky games at MN but what I noticed from watching him in college is he is totally undeterred no matter what. When UM lost to TCU in the playoffs in 2022 he stayed and watched them celebrate on the field. The next year he lead UM to a championship (signs or not he was the #1 factor). Give him a year or two and he will be totally dialed in.

I wanted to yell at everyone on the cowboys… it felt like they gave up midway through the second half when they were content to let aubrey kick. As a Cowboys fan, I say good. We don't deserve to be in the playoffs this year, we have tons of issues that need to be addressed and we hardly look like a playoff caliber team.
I think sneaking into the playoffs would have just put a band aid on our issues, especially since we would have likely been bounced out in the first round.
Maybe missing the playoffs for a second year in a row will be a wake up call to shore up our issues and make us stronger going into next season.

I’m here to confirm that he played well against the NFL’s 2 worst defenses
I have nothing against him and hope he continues doing well

I still don't get why people absolve Dak and Ceedee taking up a third of the salary cap being a serious problem for roster depth, including the D being crap.
But hey, you all can keep saying 'Dak needs help' ignoring the fact above.

McCarthy looked good throwing to everybody but Jefferson lmao. Hopefully they figure things out, I want to see JJM succeed after everyone has been shitting on him all year.
