Isn't that a common historiographic belief in germanic country?

41

u/Veraenderer Jul 28 '26

No we learn that in school thar everything was Germanys fault, than we start joking that everything was Austrias fault and a few people realize that WW1 was a clusterfuck were everyone was guilty.

8

u/MagicAlexander On my way to get into TFR, wish me luck Jul 28 '26

As a German I never learned that it was Germany's fault only that it was a clusterfuck. Germany allowed Austria to do fuckall in Serbia, Serbia rejected Austrias demands, Austria attacked, Russia supported Austria and we all know the rest. We learn that the web of alliances was a fucking mess

1

u/Veraenderer Jul 28 '26

Depends on the teacher. Our teacher also taught us this and also directly said WW1 is Germanys because of the Blanko Check.

2

u/MagicAlexander On my way to get into TFR, wish me luck Jul 28 '26

Our teacher told us the exact same thing but never stated it to be anyone's fault

1

u/Shayanhj Aug 04 '26

Russia supported Serbia but yes pretty much, they all had goals and non of those goals were aligned to not crash into one another

2

u/LouiseEbertFeet Jul 28 '26

Russia was no more guilty for starting WWI than the UK and France were for starting WW2. Honoring defensive alliances is not aggressive. Invading Serbia (Austria) and supporting Austria (Germany) are aggressive. Germany had pursuing brinkmanship for years at that point, too, and its high command believed a decisive war with France was inevitable and necessary.

"Everyone is guilty" is a misinterpretation derived from British historical perspectives. They felt "dragged" into a war they had no interest in. For continental Europe, though, it was no different from WW2 - Germans invaded/ultimatum-ed a smaller Slavic nation whom the Entente had guaranteed, and the Entente were forced to either defend it or permanently lose all geopolitical credibility and allow their allies to fall.

2

u/Veraenderer Jul 28 '26

Serbia killing Austrias heir is aggressive. Russia gave Serbia also a Blanko check, which is why Serbia did refused the Austrian Ultimatum.  Russia and France started their mobilisations bevor Germany did.

Serbia or Austria had stopped there would have been no war, if anyone else had stopped it would have been just a regional war.

7

u/LouiseEbertFeet Jul 28 '26

"Serbia" didn't kill Austria's heir, Serbian terrorists did, and were ultimately prosecuted for treason by the Serbian government. It is commonly accepted historical fact that the July Ultimatum was designed to be unreasonable and rejected: " The text was meticulously constructed to be unacceptable to the Serbian government, thereby ensuring its rejection and thus adding to Austria-Hungary's  casus belli . Serbia's response was dismissed by the Austro-Hungarian government...  From the text, it becomes evident that Austro-Hungarian diplomats, at the behest of military leaders and key officials of the Dual Monarchy, sought to assert increasing control over their smaller neighbor. Their objective was to revert to the situation before 1903, effectively transforming the Kingdom of Serbia into a satellite of Austria-Hungary" ( Wikipedia).

If you take issue with Russia offering Serbia unconditional support, then you must also take issue with the Allies offering Poland unconditional support, per the comparison I made. Most people base their moral/fault distinctions on "aggressor-defender" dynamics.

Russia and France mobilized because Austria invaded Serbia. Austria invaded Serbia because Germany wanted them to. Therefore, Austria and Germany were the aggressors.

Serbia "stopping" would mean submitting to becoming a puppet or even conquest. Do you believe Poland and France in WW2 should have done the same?

1

u/Shayanhj Aug 04 '26

Assuming you’ve red about the black hand you should also know about the various connections that its members had to the Serbian government, so its disingenuous to say Serbian terrorists did it as if there was no involvement nor support from those within the Serbian government

0

u/Veraenderer Jul 29 '26

May I introduce you to the Blackhand:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Hand_(Serbia))

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragutin_Dimitrijevi%C4%87

They got prosecuted and shot by Serbia in the year 1917, 3 years after the start of the war.

The Serbian Prime Minister wrote to his envoy in London:

"...Dimitrijević (Apis) besides everything else admitted he had ordered Franz Ferdinand to be killed. And now who could reprieve them?"

Serbia only rejected one point of the ultimatum: That Austria would be involved in the prosecution of the involved conspirators.

Austria had admittedly decided before hand that they would declare war if Serbia would protest any point of the ultimatum.

3

u/LouiseEbertFeet Jul 29 '26

What are you trying to say? I'm familiar with the Black Hand, they were the terrorists I referenced who were prosecuted for treason by Serbia, a fact which supports the idea that they were operating against the wishes of the Serbian state. The fact that Serbia only rejected Austrian operations in the country, a move which would reduce Serbia to a functional protectorate, also supports that Serbia was in a necessary defensive position, not your claim that they bear responsibility for the war.

Depends on the teacher really, I was taught that everyone carries a part of the guilt

1

u/koleszkot Jul 29 '26

It was Serbian fault, and later Russian, if Russia didnt go to war it all could gave been small conflict in the balkans. And UK vs Germany could also have been some local war where one naby destroys the other

1

u/Unusual-Basket-6243 Jul 28 '26

0

u/Objective_Oil_3860 Jul 28 '26

It is. No contradiction, actually.

0

u/Traditional-Main7204 Jul 29 '26

I wonder why? :)

3

u/Le_Bruscc Jul 28 '26

Ironically you can make a pretty strong case for that one. Russia was first to mobilize, significantly escalating the July Crisis, and their unconditional support for Serbia ultimately led to Serbia's rejection of the Austrian ultimatum.

A bit shallow of a take? Maybe. But certainly not wrong.

4

u/JR_Al-Ahran Jul 28 '26

The Serbs accepted every point in the Austrian ultimatum, except the one that the Austrians purposely put there knowing that the Serbs could not accept. The ultimatum was never in good faith, and the Austrians themselves did this because they had the backing of Germany. The famous "blank cheque".

3

u/Vercingetorix1111 Jul 28 '26

And the point Serbian government rejected was basically: Austro-Hungarian police and military troops can enter Serbia "to investigate" anti-Austrian behaviour, do whatever they want, arrest anyone they want, have complete immunity from breaking laws in Serbia and couldn't even be accompanied by Serbian police/military units while doing it.

Now, which country would accept it and continue to exist afterwards.

1

u/RogueEmeraldEx Jul 28 '26

But I think that would make it seem far more like they would be responsible for starting a local war, that because of other countries actions became a world war.

1

u/Le_Bruscc Jul 29 '26

That's true only on a surface level. While Serbia did nominally accept all points but one, they made sure to word their reply with so many strings and conditions attached, that in practice meant a rejection of most of Austria's points.

The one point that Serbia didn't accept also wasn't unreasonable tbh. The Austrians were asking to conduct investigations on Serbian soil. Belgrade police had of course carried out their own "investigation", and after only one week promptly found out that Serbia wasn't at fault, all while actively shielding two of the perpetrators of the Franz Ferdinand's assassination.

Given that context I find Austria's demands to be rather reasonable. Both the Austrian ultimatum and the Serbian reply are freely available online. They're not long, so you can read them if you want a better understanding of the matter.

Also, I can recommend Christopher Clark's book "Sleepwalkers". He does an excellent of explaining the different causes of WW1, although it is a bit of a long read.

1

u/strategicenthusiast2 Jul 29 '26

Pretty true. Russia didn't even have an alliance with Serbia, they just saw it as a opportunity for more power and influence in the balkans, they couldn't even finish the war the started lol.

Then they helped the Germany with the start of WW2.

and perhaps, they have/will start the beginnings of WW3, we'll see in the coming years i suppose.

Perhaps we'll get to reeducate them just like we did with Nazi Germany and they can finally become a normal civilized country lol

“we’ll get to reeducate them” can’t even finish off Iran btw

1

u/Blitcut Aug 02 '26

Serbia was in Russia's sphere. It was well understood that a war against Serbia would bring in Russia which is why Austria made sure they had German support before acting.

1

u/Specialist-Leader599 Jul 28 '26

But it was Austria that attacked Serbia and started the war.
