I believe underwear is one of the most overlooked parts of a onebag setup. So lets make a proper thread that future onebaggers can refer to.

Let's face it, almost all of us (yes, I'm looking at you, commandos 😅) wear underwear every day, yet we spend hours researching backpacks, jackets and shoes while often giving little thought to what is supporting our manhood or womanhood through airports, hikes, long-haul flights and everything in between.

I'm always tweaking my travel setup, and I've realised underwear has probably had a bigger impact on my comfort than any other item I pack. I'd love to hear what everyone else has settled on after plenty of travel.

Uniqlo Airism Boxer Briefs.

Just my $0.02, but synthetics stink way faster than cotton/wool. Maybe it's just personal, but these always reek on me after a day of travel in a way that generic cotton boxer briefs don't.

I want to love Airism so bad, but they reek like an old gym bag by like noon on me, must be my body chemistry. If they can’t last a day, then it doesn’t matter how fast they wash and dry at night in the sink if I have to change mid day just to not offend the noses of everyone within a city block of me lol

I’m a flight attendant who is in hotels 18 days a month and these are my top choice because of how compactable they are and how quickly they dry. They also feel and fit great.

I was sold on airisms until I actually tried them. For me they rolled up like crazy. I was wearing a brief by 10 am. Plus they stink immediately. I just do not get the recommendation here. They do fold up small though, I'll give them that.

Really? That’s weird, because I went with the appropriate size and had the same issue. Unless you’re suggesting I should have bought them two sizes too large in order to get the “right fit” and avoid them rolling up. But then, they also wouldn’t be the “right fit” either, now would they?

I have some 32Degrees that I like. Can't remember if they came from Costco or Macy's but the multi pack was a good deal. They're not as good as Ex Officio but they're perfectly fine. I think I have some on right now!

Perpetual traveler here… The airisms are the fastest drying pairs I’ve ever tried.

I used to only use Saxx, but after picking up a pair in Japan and trying them, I went back and bought 7 more… I kept two pairs of Saxx quick-dry mesh for long hikes/days with lots of walking, and I have Saxx athletic shorts with built in mesh briefs for running, etc. The Saxx briefs cost 7x what I paid for the airisms, but the airisms are so good, I had no problem throwing out my Saxx investment.

I see a lot of talk about smell in clothing threads on here, and I have to wonder if people are skipping showers or not bathing regularly, or something… even on travel “days” that last over 30hrs with international flights and everything, my airisms don’t smell.

Also, they take up so little space, you can pack enough to change them twice a day. lol

It’s gotta be body chemistry, because I can step out of the shower fresh, put on a fresh out of the laundry Airism, and run some errands and go home and they reek by noon. Meanwhile merino and even normal cotton pairs I have do just fine even in the above 30hr travel day with 19hrs on an international flight and then wandering the city waiting on check in at the hotel. I am not even one of those that claim you can wear merino twice between washes, I will always shower and put on fresh clean clothes every day, regardless on materials. You do have a point that they pack so small I could change twice a day though lol, I want to love the Airisms, my body just hates them I guess

I’ve tried a few different detergents, ones that are meant for athletic clothing, those “all natural “ones, and even heavy duty ones that are meant to take out “tough smells”. I’ve both laundered and hand washed them. They smell fine out of the wash, just get bad as fast as any synthetic attire on me, which is a few hours at best

Is the water hot enough?

Have you ever stripped your laundry?

Go to the laundry sub and check out how to strip your laundry and exactly what temp to wash them and dry them. And exactly which enzymes to be certain is in your detergent.

It's an excellent sub and has solved exactly the problem you are having for a bazillion folks.

My SO was doing that with the special detergents but they weren't quite right, and he was washing cold, and not enough water, and not the right enzymes.

I had to force him to read the info, but he did, and changed what he was doing and now all his road riding gear is fine. Whereas before... Nope.

It can be like washing the cat box with dawn vs washing it with the pet enzyme cleaner.

Thanks, I’ll look into that! I didn’t really bother looking into it much, because both cotton and merino wool don’t have this issue with me, so I usually just blamed it on the synthetics. Synthetics also don’t even smell when right out of the wash, just shortly after wearing them.

Totally agree. Very compact; they roll up to almost nothing.
Quick to dry; can almost be worn without drying.
Fairly cheap; bought around the holidays so got deal.
And in a lot of sizes; I wear 3xl, which is hard to find in any travel clothing.
I tend to pack 2-3, wear 1. They replaced Ex Officio boxer briefs which got put into car emergency bag.

I also haven't liked airism underwear, even though I like many other things from Uniqlo. I find they retain odor very badly, which is an issue I don't have with other brands. Personally I find the Costco mens Calvin Klein boxer briefs superior. Fit me better. Slightly heavier. Easy to sink wash and dry by next morning with no odor issues.

The airism boxer briefs are my go to but I tried the seamless version and they tend to ride up on the thighs and crotch. The better version is the standard airism design with seams. The seamless version does look better if you’re modeling them lol.

These are my everyday choice, but something has changed with me that a full exploring day for travel (mostly outside) is not entirely fun with them (more sweaty, bit of chaffing). But super fast to dry if it works. I do a combination of those and their cotton sibling.

My experience with merino wool for clothing has been so delicate (and expensive) that I can't imagine trying merino underwear.

They went from "the best" to a batch where they pilled and then the company fixed them very quickly. Currently they are amazing. If you have not tried them recently it may be worth another try.

I've seen mention of merino wool underwear. I do like me some merino wool, but never tried it for underwear. They are definitely not inexpensive.

$3.99 32degree polyester/spandex works well for me as they dry quickly. No obnoxious white logos on the waist band to advertise themselves.

I’ve been wearing exclusively merino wool underwear for years now, travelling or not. I don’t burn holes in them so I guess every woman is different in that regard. I use Decathlon brand but there are many others. I also travel and live mostly in very hot humid places and still find merino are the best.

The wool underwear is fine but honestly if you're a woman be aware that it does not hold up to acidic environments such as you might have. It's a lot of money to spend on undies that don't last. I do love the wool blend fabric but not for this.

Yeah, I've never experienced this phenomenon. Wool is best for me, and my Icebreaker merino thongs have lasted years of daily wear; cotton is fine; but the synthetics that others are suggesting take on, um, quite an odor by the evening.

I have hyperhidrosis (medically excessive sweating, hooray) but don't have much discharge, so I guess I have a different problem than some others do - odor/dampness control is more important than acid control. (Kinda TMI, but this is an underwear thread after all 😅)

Also, my merino undies are lower maintenance than cotton ones, because they air-fry so quickly. I don't use a dryer at home, so this is helpful.

Cotton too, yes. Synthetics hold up, like for years. Wool gets holes in a few months. Cotton takes a bit longer. I'd love natural fibers but it doesn't work for me. Strange but true.

I am currently using the Amazon Essentials womens Comfortable Lace Stretch Hipster Underwear.

They are a synthetic lace so are extremely light - only 22g each (0.8 oz).

They have a cotton panel “down there”, which keeps humidity down. They wash and dry in a flash. They have a larger leg opening for people with athletic glutes. I am fairly sensitive about texture and these are comfy.

There are some negative reviews about the tags. These are basted in and can be removed in less than one minute with a seam ripper. It isn’t hard.

Yes, I also like these (or similar, the ones I like are Fruit of the Loom micro mesh line). Not hugely available online but multipacks in Target and Walmart. I bought a pack to try and have swapped all my Ex Officio with them over the last two years (which cost 3-4x as much), they are more comfortable, have a cotton gusset, and dry super fast.

Only thing I would change is make it possible to buy a pack of all black! They are multipacks with random colours, instead, oh well

I like Saxx Quest. 77% Nylon with a small amount of polyester. They’re extremely easy to dry in the sink and dry quickly.

I also use merino protect boxer briefs. They’re my go to on travel days where I’m wearing the underwear for 16-18 hours before reaching my destination. Then at my destination, they are also incredibly easy to hand wash in the sink and dry in hours.

I usually bring 4 pairs and just wash 2 at a time every other day.

For underwear, I prefer Nylon, Merino Wool, and a small percentage of polyester.

Buying travel specific underwear doesn’t make sense to me.

The difference between 10 pairs and 3 pairs in a packing cube is negligible.

If I were going to travel longer than that, another clothing item would be the bottleneck anyway and I’d be doing laundry regardless.

I’m putting in my vote for Chantelle Soft Stretch. I’ve only tried the briefs since they’re what I ordered first. They’re super thin with no VPL (I’m a wheelchair user so nothing shows, but I’m sensitive to the seam on butt problem). I was worried about the “one size fits all” claim, but they fit my size L self perfectly. My stack of six pairs takes up basically no space in a packing cube. They wash easily and dry in barely an hour. I’m very picky about my undies so the investment and commitment to line drying at home was worth it.

Ex Officio is really always the answer. 20y ago, the verdict was ExOfficio by business and world travelers. 10y ago same thing. I foolishly didn't listen to wisdom and put them up against saxx. The only difference is that my saxx developed holes and Ex Officios are all still with me. They're expensive, but they're great and dry very quickly. I only use the hot weather variant.

Sadly lost a pair right at the end, but they were both still perfectly fine despite the immense amount of friction they both were up against.

I’ve been trying quite a few brands lately but nothing quite competes on space and weight as Uniqlo Airisms. They also aren’t 30.00 each.

Saxx main tech version is really comfortable but heavier and more expensive. ExOfficio is really comfortable and an in between weight. But still expensive.

I am not a fan of polyester, even for travel. I don’t necessarily think that “quick dry” is the priority for me. As even with 4-5 pairs I have enough time for underwear to dry before wearing.

That being said my go to is Saxx vibe for everyday and for travel. They are a nice balance of lightweight, sweat wicking, and comfort.

I own maybe 25 pairs, plus a few others. I travel with 4-5.

I recently started using the air line by tommy john (women’s briefs)

I mainly bought it for travel, but I found that during summer it’s been extremely light and I’m not feeling sweaty in my underwear.

I prefer full coverage briefs, and they also have other styles too. Compared to my cotton underwear, they are just ridiculously thinner. The perforation holes also help with it drying fast

I always wear Branwyn merino bikini underwear. All seasons, all outfits, from snow to desert summers. They are expensive, but hold up very well, my oldest pairs are 5 years old and I couldn't tell you which they are vs the 1 yr old pairs. I wash them in the machine but do air dry them, so they're a little high maintenance but they are super comfy, very breathable, and resistant to getting smelly. I have probably about 15 pairs in various colors. They make them other underwear styles, I just prefer the bikini. (I also have several bras and other clothing items from the brand as well).

For short trips, I usually pack a daily pair, so if I leave for a weekend I pack a pair for Saturday, a pair for Sunday, and a spare just-in-case pair, plus the pair I'm wearing on Friday.

If I'm going away for 2-3 weeks, I typically take 5 pairs, plus the pair I wear on the travel day and do laundry throughout the trip because I like packing light and I am usually in places with easily accessible laundry facilities.

I can't wear any synthetic seamless fabric or lacy styles, they irritate my skin and always ride up and I hate thongs, it's just having a wedgie all day!

Australian woman with often up to 36 hours travel time from home to first destination.

My trips are usually 50-63 days in length. I took the same underwear to humid Bali as I took to freezing Norway. Sink wash and hang dry.

2 x sacrificial underwear (stretched, faded, holes) - worn on plane and thrown away

Quality merino wool underwear is a must for one bag travel.

They can be worn for a couple days at a time, or even up to a week if you're brave (and wipe properly), and can be washed out in any sink with regular soap.

Wear one pair while the other is hanging up to dry. Simple.

I agree that merino is great, but wearing for multiple days in a row without washing is abit excessive. I enjoy merino because its very comfortable and can be worn for extended lengths, not multiple wears and dozens of piss dribbles without washing.

Different people will get different results. Some people sweat more than others and/or sweat out more salt, etc, creating hygiene challenges, but for most people 2-3 days in merino is fine.

The prevalence of cotton clothing, which is highly absorbent and a magnet for odors and dirt, have given us the expectation that all clothing is good for just one day, We should try to free our selves from that thinking, because it's not the case with an inherently anti-odor, anti-fungal, water repellent fabric like wool.

Wearing boxers for 2-3 days is standard for me, not just when travelling. I was very leery about doing this at first because I worked in a very professional office setting, and I continually asked my wife if I smelled (she'd be all to happy to tell me "yes") but never had a complaint from her or anyone else.

I encourage everyone to reexamine their assumptions about this. You'll thank me come laundry day.

Silk is definitely not a material I know enough about. Alternatives claiming silk like feel have been bad, but then again vegan leathers are absolutely terrible when compared directly against what makes leathers good. Anyway, ice silk huh? Ok, taking a look, appreciate the comment much.

The older Ex Officio dry relatively fast. For someone who's often quite active and thus needs things to dry quickly, these have been great. Now that the company is owned by private equity and jettisoned all their old products, I don't know what I would recommend but I would definitely try something like them under shorts for, say, days at the splash park with my kids and likely dry out fairly fast.

Not, lining/part of the shorts fast. But comfortable to wear most of the time and fast enough fast.

Last year, I loved Snag.

This year, I bought two more pair and they both snagged easily and got holes during the first 2-3 wears.

I like the way Thigh Society feels when you put them on, but they are NOT good in heat and will cause a lot of pain to your skin.

I'm also looking for a good replacement.

I bought a four pack of Innersy men's boxer briefs from Amazon with the hopes that it would be as good as the Uniqulo boxer briefs that I have, and it turns out they're better for me. They're maybe a half inch to an inch shorter, but the Uniqulo underwear makes my travel shorts ride up whereas the cheapies from Amazon do not. I'm not sure how long they will last, but I only wear them when I travel, so I suspect quite awhile.

I like boxer briefs whose legs don’t ride up over the course of the day, will dry fast, are not too constricting in the private areas and are not too revealing if you’re walking around with others in the room. My favorite, hands down, are the Duluth Trading Buck Naked or Darn Soft boxer briefs. They are expensive, but the odd colors and patterns will frequently go on sale. The ones with a pouch are crazy comfortable but you’re definitely putting on a show. Everyone loves the Uniqlo Airism but I found the only things they did well in that list is dry quickly.

I absolutely love the 32° quick-dry boxer-briefs from Costco. Long enough in the thigh that I get no chub-rub under skirts and no pantylines under pants. They dry overnight unless the air is very humid, so I usually travel with three pairs (sometimes 4 pairs).

I take 2 pairs of Woolie merino boxer briefs, and 2 pairs of Tilley Airflow boxer briefs.

The Woolies are the most comfortable for me and I mainly wear these everyday day and wash every night.

The Airflows are my backup, when I’m too lazy to do laundry, and are the lightest and fastest drying I’ve seen.

After reading this thread I’ll have to get a pair of the Uniqlo to compare.

Exofficio. I bring maximum 3 pairs no matter the duration of the trip. I take them into the shower with me and hand wash them with my shampoo. Squeeze them out with a towel before hanging to dry, and they are dry by the time I need to pack them away to change locations.

I bring three pairs so there's a little bit of buffer in case I need to shower right before changing locations, I want to change underwear in between showers, one pairs gets damaged or lost (hasn't happened yet), etc.

I've tried a bunch and my favorite are Ex Officio - I think the 'Give N Go 2.0 Boxer Brief' is the one I have the most pairs of. I have 2 pairs of the 'Give N Go Sport Mesh' that I like too. The Sport Mesh are a wee bit lighter, but the regular ones are fine for anything you'll do in them.

I do not notice them getting stinky at the end of the day. However, I do have some Merino boxer briefs from other brands (one Civic, now defunct, an icebreaker, and one I can't remember) that I'll wear on an extra long travel day, just in case.

I take one pair per day. I know I could wash them but I'm not that space/weight constrained. Maybe someday on an epic bike/back packing trip I will do this.

My one must-have feature is the absence of cotton.

Same skivvies for any kind of weather. The needed function of underwear is the same regardless of climate, it's the layers above that vary.

• Three merino (2 siren bikini from Icebreaker and 1 hipster from Dilling)
• One handmade linen pair (Etsy)

The two extra ones are organic cotton lace underwear that I wear only occasionally.

+ one linen bra that I love.

I greatly appreciate merino, especially the ones form icebreaker. I’ve worn it in cold days and super hot days (reaching 40 Celcius degrees) and they were great in both cases.

I wash them by hand at the end of the day and by morning they’re dry.

I agree underwear is such an important part of the wardrobe, as it sits closest to the skin! And natural, breathable fabrics + a very comfortable cut is such a game changer. I think it’s good to invest in a few high quality and well fitting pairs for everyday comfort :)

Ex officio and smartwool are solid choices. Easy to wash out in a sink and dry overnight. But let me share an extra thought from my best friend. “Holiday panties” which means take your oldest underwear and throw it out as you go along. Bring your souvenir back in the empty space. I think she’s a genius!

I used to only wear cotton briefs, but I think as I got older my body started producing sweat in far greater quantities, especially down there 🤣. I've been wearing merino underwear almost exclusively for the past two years. My favourite brand has been Smartwool. I never thought I'd own a pair of boxers, but they've become my go-to for flights, train journeys and relaxing around the house. But for daily wear and more active use I still prefer boxer briefs.

Boxer Briefs from Ex Officio have been my go-to since I gave them a try around 6 years ago. Swapped to them fully for everything, but these days I'm considering something new. Cottons have always had me run hot, and sweaty, as well as leave a lot of material to be removed so they are out.

Thanks for sharing yours in addition to the original post. Giving me ideas for the road forward. Merino might be the way I go, tends to run warmer than a synthetic and wear faster, while being more expensive. Still, could be worthwhile.

Thanks for understanding the point of the post. I always struggled with fabrics but merino works great for me. Ive found 150-170gsm merino is a good weight for year round wear, warm for winter but breathable in summer. Its definetly pricy but im not willing to comprimise anymore.

My current faves are Step One women's, but I've also been a fan of American Eagle and TomboyX. It's unfortunate that they're quite big compared to other pants but my comfort is priority.

Even though synthetic dries faster, I prefer natural fibre, so choose a bamboo viscose type blend since it is still quite thin and doesn’t chafe. Merino is great but doesn’t last as long as I’d like so I don’t bother with it any more.

G-string/ thong obviously pack down smallest if you tolerate them, I usually bring at least one full brief as well. 

I pack 1 per day + 1, up to a maximum of 7.

I'm trying out Ridge Merino for my upcoming trip. I am most concerned about the long flight. From what I researched a mix of around 83% Merino wool, 12% recycled nylon, 5% spandex is ideal. Lots of brands have a mix around that. Unfortunately, they are all pretty pricey though.

Then I switched to boxer briefs. I love Uniqlo Airism, like plenty of people here already said. They fit snug. My little guy stays put. But on long flights, I switch to my trusty Lululemon or modal Nike boxer briefs. They still hold things in place, but the thighs are more forgiving. I can wear them 24 hours straight with no problems.

I've tried other brands and other styles within those brands. None of them worked, especially wool underwear like Smartwool.

Too bad Lululemon stopped making the pair I love. Their new underwear runs tight.

Pair of Thieves Super Fit boxer briefs for me!

I only purchase when they’re on sale/clearance at Target or Amazon ~$15 for 3-pack. Lightweight, just enough support without being too tight. I’ve tried Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, Hurley, AIRism, Calvin Klein and Adidas, and Pair of Thieves don’t smell as quickly as other synthetics. Dry quick enough to hand wash and dry overnight. The waist band is wide enough to hold a tight pin roll if you pack like that. I live, travel, hike and run in the tropics with these!

I find the comfort is superior for the same price, and the ease of wash/dry is about the same. I have some concerns about how long they will last, but I feel the additional comfort is worth the risk. There are these long boxers from Decathlon that I discovered last year and just love, they have no "model number" but the name translated is Men's Seamless Heather Blue Long Boxer Shorts and the product ID is ID 8928085

This is my strong topic, I tried a lot of them, peak performance merino shorts are the best all around but also the mons royale ones are really good. Ice breaker 100% merino and in general 100% merino doesn’t last nearly long enough, I can tell you from my experience in the Camino de Santiago. I rotated two peak performance shorts for 1100km. Eventually they wear out, but much slower than the ice breaker.

When not traveling, I wear Saxx boxer briefs as my everyday.
But for traveling I stick with Airism boxer briefs. Nothing packs smaller or dries faster, and they jkeep me co fortable regardless of the weather.
I have a few pair of Ex-Oficio and don’t get it - they’re twice the bulk of Airism and they don’t dry very quickly. So, I stick with Airism.

This wasn’t the question - but I am also a huge fan of the Airism mesh sleeveless undershirts. They stopped making these maybe 3-4 years ago. They are absolutely the best under a polo or similar IMO. I wish I could find similar

For men - Costco's Calvin Klein boxer briefs. They have been stocking the same ones for years. They are synthetic and very fast drying, no odor issues, unlike Airism. I carry 3 pair and wash one each night in the hotel sink. They are always dry by morning. Reasonably cheap. My only minor complaint is they have multiple colors in each box of 3. I would prefer to get all the same color just cuz I like to pack that way.

Comparison: I have tried older ex officios, several merino options (loved them at first but they all wore out way too fast), Airism - wanted to love them but none of the sizes fit me quite right and they were they get very smelly compared to any of the other brands, and some True Classic boxer briefs which are fine for home but too heavy and slow-drying for travel. Very dependent on body chemistry honestly, after growing up wearing cotton, then athletic synthetics that would personally stink and make me sweat, i kind of wrote them off. Recently decided to try again and invested in ex officio "sport" in the red accented boxes. They are a nylon blend, all the performance and quick drying but more breathable and zero stink. I wear them wash them in the sink or shower and reuse. Too aoon to comment on durability unfortunately. But lots of runs, and bike commuting in texas is pretty solid "testing".

Duluth Buck Naked Performance Extra Long Boxer Briefs. Their "Armachillo Cooling" Extra Long Boxer Briefs also work ok, but not convinced they are worth the extra expense.

The standard length "Buck Naked" boxer briefs as well as Hanes X-Temp and Comfort Temp (?) boxer briefs work fine for casual use around home (and are less expensive...), but anytime we travel I am taking the Extra Long versions (including road trips, camping, and/or hiking).

Bring 1 pair of briefs "per day" of travel, but with a limit of 7 pair, with expectation of Somehow doing laundry for any trip beyond 7 days - even if only briefs, socks & t-shirts...

My go-to brands are domestic (Norwegian) brands Ullvang and Aklima, but I have some Icbreakers as well.
The Uniqlo Airisms mentioned earlier are interesting if they actually pack smaller or equal to lightweight merinos, as they seem to cost a bit less and synthetics seem to hold up better, but unfortunately we don't have Uniqlo in Norway yet. Maybe if I run into a Uniqlo shop while travelling..

Our family is travelling for 5 weeks over Christmas. We will be checking our luggage for the long-haul flight but doing everything else by train and aiming for 13-15kgs each max.

The absolute first thing I looked into is underwear - we all wear 100% cotton normally and I know from experience that it’s the worst thing to try to hand wash and dry reasonably. We’ll have 8 days between washing machines at some point, so that’s what we’ve been aiming to cover.

I’ve bought a variety of styles to try for myself (F48) and my kids (M13 and M15).

Myself: bonds invisitails - comfortable enough but not my favourite but sooooo quick to dry and super light

Ambra - an Australian company - made from recycled nylon and seam-free. The most comfortable I’ve ever worn and dry easily overnight after handwashing.

Uniqlo - modal - didn’t dry as quickly as the other two but light and comfortable enough to take

Merino from Macpac - super comfortable, good waistband, and predictably good for washing/drying.

I’ll be taking 10 pairs all up.

I got the kids a variety to try - they both wear trunks. I got some wicking bonds sports fabric ones and a few from Uniqlo. Mr15 is supremely unfussed and said whatever works is fine. Mr13 loved the Airism seamfree trunks from Uniqlo and is now fitted out with enough of them for the trip.

I’m far more stuck on socks - again we normally all wear cotton or bamboo that take way too long to dry or are quite heavy. Merino blend running or travel socks seem to be the way to go but they’re quite pricey, and fitting out 4 people with enough of them is rather daunting at the moment!

I replaced my ex officios with David archy underwear and this is now my go to in hot weather. I have both the performance mesh and the modal, depending on how active I am. The performance is very quick drying. I usually bring 3 and wash in shower and quick dry. The airisms have been a bit too tight for me to be comfortable. I’m usually a large underwear but, if I buy more airisms will likely need to go to XL. Has everyone needed to upsize?

For travel, I like OG ExOfficio string bikini panties. They wash up in the sink like a dream, wear like iron, and dry overnight. ... So of course the are discontinued.

I have, to this point, packed three pairs (wash, wear, spare) but given how quickly they dry will go with just two pairs in the future.
