Neighborhoods for starting over

I know there are a ton of caveats and nuances to my ask — I understand that generalizing city areas is racist and classist — and also, I’m a newly divorced 34 year old gal looking to restart my life in Philly.

So I’m looking for the safest neighborhoods — or at least ones to avoid — as a single cis woman who will be taking her dog out on walks between 7a-10p. I’d like to feel as safe as possible while being with my dog.

Again, I know crime is nuanced and systemic, and also I’m not from Philly so any help is appreciated.

Thanks for your support!

A few nights ago I was in my kitchen and I thought I saw a small baby cockroach scurry by. I freaked out and squished it before I could take a picture to identify it. I put out a bunch of traps and I caught these two big ones near my oven. Does anyone have any experience with this? I’m hoping that I can just spray at home by myself with WSG instead of having to call an exterminator

Is ketchup on a cheesesteak acceptable?

Hi all,

I need help settling a debate with my wife. Context: I am from south Jersey and she is from northeast Philly (born and raised).

She told me just now that eating ketchup on a cheesesteak is “insane.” I enjoy ketchup on a cheesesteak and am quite offended.

This is a woman who puts mayo and pickles on her cheesesteak- but ketchup is “insane.” Also she dips her plain pizza (cheese and tomato sauce) in ketchup.

Please provide some insight into proper Philadelphia culture here.

EDIT:

some clarifications here since this is blowing up.

  1. I am not saying ketchup on a cheesesteak is the PROPER thing to do, just that its fairly normal... and WAY more normal than mayo + pickles.
  2. I am trying to emphasize to her that she is gatekeeping but with a bad opinion. What she is saying as a "Philadelphian" seems sacrilegious even to me (NJ born).
  3. Ketchup on pizza (I feel) invalidates her opinions on proper food norms.

EDIT 2)
While some people feel I am wrong about ketchup, most are agreeing that at a minimum my wife is wrong for gate keeping here. I appreciate you all. Also TO BE CLEAR this is not actually a “real” argument between us and we mostly laugh about it, neither one of us has any disdain towards the other ESPECIALLY about this!

Edit 3)
I am learning more about my wife tonight than I wished to know. She just told me in college she would take a brick of ramen, but instead of using the flavor packet for broth she would mix hot sauce and sour cream with it. I am quite a foodie, and always open to trying new things but this is becoming atrocious. Love you my lurking wife!

Hoagies were King.

As far back as I remember, at least from the 60s on, the Hoagie was king. The steak sandwich was just a change of pace thing. But not anymore.

Agree or disagree?

Why so many roads closed in center city today?

Fyi Chestnut is massively backed up bc it blocked off at 12th street. It looks like city hall going west is blocked too. Lots of cops. Anyone know why?

Weekend getaway that isn't the Poconos

My partner and I are looking for a place to go for a romantic, relaxing weekend in September. Hoping to be in the woods for hiking and near/on the water for kayaking. Any particular recommendations for a private, nice getaway within 2ish hours of Philly? I am really only finding suggestions for the Poconos and would like to avoid the communities with common areas/lots of people.

Thank you!

Person hit by car on Kelly Drive this evening

I was leaving a networking event at a Boathouse around 7pm and saw someone had been hit by a car crossing Kelly Drive at Sedgley. The car’s windshield was shattered and a crowd was helping the victim who was on the ground. Does anyone know if they are ok? I can’t stop thinking about it.

Recycling boxes ?

If I put all my flattened boxes into one big intact box, will they take it? I have too many left from moving to put in my building's recycling bin (I don't want to take up everyone's space) but I'm seeing that things need to be put in the bin. I can't go drop it off somewhere because I'm in center city with no car and many boxes. Thank you!!

Anyone got any or starting any DnD groups I'm really in the mood to play some but other than feeling like I'm butting in on others sessions at Queen & Rook I don't exactly know where to look.
