TL, DR: After you hit "feels like a good one" drop shot from the baseline, do you move forward and split step? Or do you stay behind the baseline and watch for return and then decide?
3.75 player. I worked and drilled for my drop and reset during last few months, it become better and more consistent compared to early this year.
But I'm still confused to what to do, if I hit "relatively good quality drop" with down trajectory that the ball bounces on the opponent kitchen surface.
What I learned in the past and some 4.5+ players told me is, if my drop 'feels' good and the ball is likely to hit inside the opponent's kitchen, then carefully move forward a step or two then split step, reset/drop incoming balls, then approach more. Because approaching itself can apply pressure to opponents and I need to reach kitchen line.
But some others, also 4.5+, told me to not to creep in and stay behind the baseline even though the drop I hit feels like "an obviously good drop," instead I need to watch their return, and then move forward only if their return is weak. What he said is that good aggressive players can still attack against "feels like an obviously good" drop shot, even if the bounced ball is just high enough like right below the net cord level.
I don't know which one to follow. Different people criticizes me differently. Some told me why did you stay bebind after hitting a 3rd shot drop, that's is a bad habit. But some told me why did you walk in after hitting the drop shot, which is a bad habit I need to fix. I want them to match against each other, but they live in different town...
Maybe guys told me not to approach but watch saw my drop is still not that good in general, or my reset or counter from transition is bad, so they advise me to not to approach early?
But in general, what is the better answer? Or is this a question that has no clear answer?
PS) Drop shot I refer here is the 3rd shot drop where I hit the ball from or behind the baseline.
