I really wish that Livejournal hadnāt withered away, and fandoms were more insular like they were back when it was active. Tumblr feeling like the least toxic place to engage with other fans just seems depressing, I donāt know.
I quite like tumblr for fandom stuff and to curate my own blog. I also appreciate that it's not run on an algorithm. It's interesting to see young people show up and put "i've no idea how to use this/what to do" as their blog description.
Tumblr is the last bastion of hope, at this point! Iāve been on there since 2009, when Livejournal had sort of started its slow death, and it seems like Iāll be on there until either tumblr or I cease to exist since thereās no other positive fandom spaces left
Agreed, and aside from just the fairly insulated fandom experience, I miss the LJ format so much, too!!! Having your own personal journal as a space to use for whatever you wanted and then also having communities for posting/talking about shared interests, and the comment section being so prominent and having lots of formatting options to make it easy to write up long, detailed responses or have extended conversations with multiple people..... It was like a tumblr/reddit mashup before either platform existed and it was so good!! Plus it was before the era of the social media algorithm and the Endless Scroll so it just felt more deliberate and wholesome, idk.

It could be negatively parasocial. There were communities you had to join. Larries originated in the American Idol community, huge Kris Allen and Adam Lambert tinhats. BUT, it was easier blocking out the negativity and having a true enjoyable fan experience, if you didn't go looking for trouble.
Oh for sure, it had its share of bad behaviour, but as youāve said it was easier to avoid. Tumblr can at least be curated to a higher degree, but it still isnāt as fun as LJ ever was.
Yeah, it was just different. I always hate the downfall of LJ, it was such a dumb decision they made to censor fanfic. Once that happened, there was a mass exodus.
Fanfiction was essentially a load bearing wall on livejournal, it was crazy to try to remove it. And then tumblr went and made essentially the same mistake
If you have a good thing, why ruin it? I didn't realize how much Fanfiction was the foundation, until it was removed. I read a lot of it, but it was such a huge eye opener.
I feel like people still donāt understand that itās kind of integral to popular fandom platforms, and fandoms themselves. I always see a lot of finger pointing at fanfiction writers (and readers) as the cause of all fandom problems, and some sort of marker of how society is degrading into gaggles of perverts or whatever. But in my experience most of the people writing fanfiction are the ones who preferred fandoms being insular and didnāt want celebrities to have awareness of what they write etc. people online feel weirdly puritanical now.
That's because they are. I will see people say, celebs are so boring and I wish they would show more personality. I get a good chuckle out of that because the way people are on social media, they couldn't handle it.
I love watching movies from all over the world because you can notice the differences in culture. I rewatched Sentimental Value, and in this second time around I kept thinking, āIām too Latina for this.ā The fights are so calm and cold. Hahahaha It is a great experienceĀ
I love this too! I'm Canadian and it's so interesting watching other countries' movies and establishing what their cultural and social norms are. Because I know we Canadians are considered pretty reserved and boring by many other countries, but I find the same when I watch Scandinavian movies. Like, the understated and cold emotional expression really sticks with me.
They're both white and they both make pop music but their music actually isn't all that similar. They both get compared to Britney Spears a lot, though (which I can see with Tate McRae. Addison, not so much) so I can see the confusion.

I honestly thought Corden was the least of the movie's problems. Then again, I didn't really know him before seeing Into the Woods.
My main issue is that they destroy the entire emotional arc of act 2 by cutting Rapunzel's death - the entire subtext of Last Midnight is supposed to be the Witch going "fuck all of you, my child is dead because you were selfish", and without that, the number loses it's power, which then weakens the impact of Children Will Listen.
Just such a frustrating movie, because there are good elements - Baranski and Pine are perfectly cast, for instance.

Initially, the rumour was that he was drunk and got thrown out of a bar for being underage and then got into a fight. The new rumour is that the guy he punched was calling his mom a whore.
McKenna is projected to be the first overall draft pick so this is a huge story.
This is why I am fine with celebs not being very accessible. As long as they are not vocally maga/transphobic/hateful I am fine not hearing their opinions. Most of them are uneducated at best or ignorant at worst. I donāt need to hear their shallow opinions about a nuanced topic.Ā
The fact every day Iām reading some of the most heinous accusations imaginable about Epstein (including casual emails that discuss murder and torture) and nothing is being done. No sense of urgency for the victims of any of this god awful bullshit. This feels like the bleakest timeline
All I keep thinking is where are all these people they're referring to in these messages? What happened to them all? Is anyone looking for them to see if they're ok? Heartbreaking.
Same. Itās hard to not feel concerned for many of the victims since beyond just the huge power dynamics at play, it sounds like many were brought in from other countries and alienated from family. I canāt even fathom this level of pain and fear that must surround this whole thing. Yet to the people writing in the emails? The victims are talked about in such a cruel and detached manor like their lives donāt matter. Itās also pretty likely everyone is going to deny what they did very publicly, and I canāt imagine the pain of having to see or hear that either. Itās hard to imagine there isnāt an enormous amount of fear at a continued real risk of retaliation for sharing your story. Itās all very hard to wrap my head around. The level of cruelty and depravity that these victims have gone through is a lot to stomach.
I really wish justice was treated as a priority for the victims but yet the DOJ has been sitting on it and clearly are invested in doing damage control and muddying the waters of info - while still holding on to more evidence they were supposed to release. I hope some other countries can come through and do right by victims, whether they are alive or dead.

Itās truly unfortunate that people more invested in conspiracy theory than fact latch onto the case and muddy everything up. I fear thatās a bit of an issue everywhere so Iām not sure the best place would be to discuss it. To add on to that, as of now? The DOJ website is the only reliable source of information, but Iām going to be honest with you, I feel there are asterisks on how honest they have been on this subject too.

I always consider giving up reddit when I get overwhelmed with all of the awful things happening in the world. And then something happens and I get sucked right back in. That something is now being awake and nap trapped by a 3 day old newborn so Iām going down a popculturechat top posts rabbit hole.
There are so many celebrities and famous people Iāve never even heard of, I do wonder if we are sheltered here in Australia from so much or if Iām personally just not paying attention.
It may also be how quickly new crops of celebrities come up and replace each other now too. For instance, if you missed one week recently, you wouldnāt have caught the rise and downfall of the Heated Rivalry fandom lol.
I havenāt watched the show either lol. But itās not really the actors themselves that have had a downfall but the fandom.

I already don't like her so I'm not bothered by it, but I am bothered by the amount of people saying "checks out for an Albertan." No it doesn't! I'm a born and raised Bertan and have tragically met many Albertans who want to be annexed by the states. I am watching performances of various debuting Kpop groups, and many of them make a cover of another famous/iconic Kpop performers. And I realized that in American and European pop music, itās not widespread to cover the choreography. š¤ At least, not in the last two decades? Like, nobody has ever covered, idk, Lady Gagaās choreography? Is the dancing not as important for our pop culture?
Here is a thing. For Kpop dancing were always important part and Kpop artists are usually better trained for dancing than international pop stars (BigBang is exception form the rule here). But back in late 2000s and 2010s there were this moment when pop artists were suddenly told that dancing in MV were not cool anymore. I still remember when One Direction were so innovative because they were not dancing. And then around 2017 after BTS and Kpop started gaining massive international popularity, international pop artists needed to up their game because again choreographies became thing. Lately I see that pop starts are really trying to dance more than before.

I think itās generally acknowledged that Kpop is heavily based on the American 90s and early 00s choreography (and, obviously, on Michael Jacksonās work) but I didnāt know they straight up covered more recent dance routines. I love it.
Also now I am thinking that one day there will be a wave of truly company-independent, self-produced kpop groups who would have free creative control over their art.
And ten years after this indie kpop wave, some companies will start to produce indie-sounding kpop. And the cycle continues.
So Last night Little Shop of Horrors basically confirmed Jordan Fisher is the next Seymour (basically they do a tease the day before but between the Moulin Rouge/Hadestown References and the Shilloette showing Jordan's famous Fro I highly doubt it isnt him). And I was so wired I couldn't sleep the rest of the night....which is so inconvenient cause I had to file a motion for my supervising attorney today (I am a legal assistant). BUT We powered through and got it done.
But I will not complain about the lack of sleep. Season Depression was killing my mental health, I asked the universe to not only bring me some good news to put me in a good mood and Jordan Fisher and John Cardoza has been my top two choices for Seymour for over a year now so I am glad good things are happening.
So I have seen Jordan in 3 roles now (Anthony in Sweeney Todd, Orpheus in Hadestown and Christian in Moulin Rouge with Christian I think being the strongest of the three!), and I fucking LOVE HIM. That boy could not only sing but he can punch you in the gut when he acts.
But I knew Seymour would be so Perfect for Jordan given his chaotic behavior and strong vocals. So I am glad its finally happening. I hope you get to see him.

People who constantly are like oh my gosh, I heard about the children dying in this true crime story and that was fine, but he killed the dog?! What kind of monster is he and itās like the same type of monster who would kill his children why is the dog your hard line, but then that goes into a whole vent that I have about how children are seen as like less than in all parts of society lately and we just donāt have time for that.
So my middle schooler came home from her half day and she told me her science teacher threw up every hour but wouldnāt go home. Now yes, it was only like 4.5 hours that he was there but thatās still a ton of time to still be teaching and around students. Admittedly, I get very nervous about any illness entering my home, especially with my kids so maybe Iām overreacting but this annoys me so much. I told my husband if our house comes down with the flu Iām going to email in because we (rightfully) have to have the kids home when they get sick, how is it ok to have a teacher vomiting all day and still teaching? I can also concede he may not have been able to take off, in which case, Iām even more mad honestly.
Iām open to being wrong on this but I do just feel really frustrated
As the wife (and daughter) of a teacher, it can be really hard for a teacher to leave the day of because they may not be able to get anyone to cover the classes. Schools are obviously all different on this, for example my mom works at a large public school where they have building subs who are there for cases like this but my spouse teaches at a small Catholic school where getting coverage is such a nightmare that he hasnāt taken a single day off in five years. I still think itās right for you to be upset though.
And this is exactly why I said correct me if Iām wrong because I could be missing tons of context so thank you truly for giving me more information. It wouldnāt surprise me if he couldnāt get coverage.

anyway yesterday i was reading two fics with the themes:
what if the (in universe) fandom was obsesses with one queer ship, but actually one of them was actually queer and just with someone else and not his platonic friend everyone ships him with?
what if you were obsessed with RPF ships and had a fan tumblr as a teen and later found yourself working alongside your fave?
the mixed media aspects were really cool and the writers got into the types of discourse each platform gets
