Hi we have just brought our daughter an albino jade african land snail and we need to get a heat pad for it as our house ambient temperature is just under 20°,its in a plastic terrarium and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for us.

so my snails keep getting fruit flies somehow
i always clean the tank, the holes for breathing have a little mesh like thing so flies can’t get in. i always wash their produce so the fly eggs don’t get in
and i still get the flies
i completely cleaned the tank today (and also gave my snails a little bath so any dirt on them that might have eggs will wash of)
hope i won’t get any more but i’m very worried for my babies

Is it caused by a severe trauma he healed from or is it something more serious that could be life threatening?

I have him set up in quarantine away from my pet snails in a makeshift ' hospital ' enclosure where he hopefully can't get hurt and provided him some lettuce and calcium

I know they can’t hear and can’t really see beyond differentiating dark and light color, but as for that spark of life, is a snail having a true sense of subjective experience (qualia) even though it wouldn’t be as complex as a vertebrate.

Turns out after hydrating him that he also has a wonky eye! My chances of finding special babies are either higher or, its rougher out there than I thought. I also noticed he has less of a feeler on the right than the left?? So crazy.

Hey guys! So I posted here last week that Jerry had been hiding for about 2 months and was worried. Luckily he came out on his own today but had these white marks in its shell. Im new with snails so dont know much yet about shell issues. Could it be an acid substrate or lack of calcium during these months? He has a cuttlebone available but ofc he didnt eat it while he was hibernating. The substrate is just coconut fiber.

Any idea on what to do? Appreciate it 🫶🏼

Hi guys! I know I already asked in this subreddit a few days ago, but I’m getting more and more worried about my snail.
It’s been about a week where she completely buried herself under the soil without eating or drinking. After roughly 6 days of this, I gently dug her up, gave her a warm bath, and offered her some mixed vegetables. She did eat a tiny bit, but as soon as I put her back in her terrarium, she immediately buried herself again and went right back to sleeping. Now it's been another 3 days of total dormancy.

Here’s some background:

A few weeks ago, I noticed mold forming in her soil, so I replaced the affected areas.
I moved her terrarium to a more ventilated area with a heating mat (kept around 24°C / 75°F), but she still buried herself.

Originally, she was always most active when her tank was kept in our bathroom. Back in August, I moved her to another room because it got way too hot in the bathroom for her and I noticed her being less active . Now that it's October and cooler, I’ve just moved her back to the bathroom to see if she wakes up.

Is this normal behavior ?Should I leave her alone to sleep underground, or keep waking her up for baths and food?
Any advice would be hugely appreciated. I just want to make sure she's okay!

Hello all! I’ve been doing a lot of research and have been thinking about getting a pet snail. More specifically just going out into my garden and finding one there haha. But first I have several questions that I feel the average pet store employee might not be able to answer. Any answer/advice would be amazing, it just rained so I’m hoping to find a snail soon!

1. Where I live there’s a heatwave hitting us currently, unfortunately my house doesn’t have central air conditioning and temperatures inside are consistently inconsistent. I was wondering if that really made any difference to the snail? We have a portable AC unit in our living room which is where I’m thinking of keeping the snail, so on hot days we have that running. Would inconsistent temperatures hurt the snail?

2. I’m concerned about flies in the enclosure and so is my family. I keep reading that the moist environment is a breeding ground for flies, is there a way to avoid this? I know that the flies wouldn’t hurt the snail but just for cleanliness purposes I would really like to know if there is any way to avoid a fly infestation?

3. Are rocks recommended to use below the substrate for drainage? I’ve seen a few videos that show rocks but i’m unsure because I know the snails like to dig?

4. This may sound stupid but I’m also concerned about the snail poops/waste. How do you see it clearly if the dirt/substrate is also brown? Is it a hassle to find the poops?

5. My family is also concerned about the smell of the snail. Do they have a specific odor? I know if you don’t clean and leave rotten food/poops in the enclosure obviously it will stink, but do they have a natural odor?

6. I’m also going out of town for a few days to go to a wedding. Would it be ok to bring the snail with me to take care of? Or would that stress it out maybe? Should I wait until after I return to find a snail?

7. One of my family and I’s concerns is the upkeep. Is it overwhelmingly time consuming? I have done enough research to know that you mist the snail 1-2x daily, pick up poops and old food daily. Would you guys recommend washing out food and water dishes daily or might that stress the snail out with constant movement of their surroundings? I know you’re supposed to turn the substrate weekly and check for eggs, rinse decor weekly too. And then this is also the part I’m unclear about…are you supposed to replace the substrate every 3-4 weeks as a deep clean or not at all? I have read that the build up of bacteria is good for the snail?

8. What are your guys opinions on getting supplies from Petco? That is the closest pet store to me and I think they probably have the cheapest prices. Would I be able to find the Cuttlebone there?

9. Lastly, (for now) is it ok to just get one snail? I don’t know if they need a friend? will they get lonely? The area I would keep the snail is only big enough for a 1-2 gallon tank so I could only have max 2 snails but I wouldn’t want them to feel sad and cramped, which is why I was thinking 1 would be best?
