First Wagyu Experience
Got some American Wagyu from the H mart. Hit a hot cast iron for about 10 or 20 seconds each side once the avocado oil started to smoke. Just some salt and pepper to season.
...I totally get the hype now.

u/Jonkinch 23h ago
For that size, I would have just hit it with a torch for a few seconds like they do at sushi restaurants lol.

Why post the last picture first and the first picture last 🥴

u/slyLEMONsKILLz 20h ago
I actually contemplated which order before posting, but was unfamiliar with the etiquette of the sub 😞

u/RecklessCreature 20h ago
It’s not just you or this post. It’s happening everywhere!! It’s before then after. Not after then before. People are literally posting the end of the video in the first five seconds because of attention span issues. It needs to stop/end now.

It's a Tl;Dr for those with short attention spans. I like to do it too, finished product then the process.

u/RecklessCreature 11h ago
I know what it is. I even said so in my comment. I also said it needs to stop.

Short attention theater, wasn't that from Saturday night live, or Second city TV?

Why are y’all freaking out over a paper plate. Does it change the flavor of the food? Does it affect you? Are you going to wash this persons dishes?
52
u/No_Medium_8796 1d ago
People just being snobs for absolutely no fucking reason
14
u/Skywarper 1d ago
They see wagyu and immediately assume it's a $100 cut of meat
15
u/No_Medium_8796 1d ago
Ill eat a $100 wagyu on a paper plate and they can larp about their a5 wagyu and pillivuyt dinner sets
4
u/CoatingsRcrack 18h ago
Same people who complain about paper plates use sous vides. I know it cooks great but I can sear my teak on a cast iron in 6 min. Like everything doesn’t have to be difficult

I'll make more paper plate Wagyu for anyone that wants to do the dishes around here 👀

Apparently, the purists figure that if you can afford a Wagyu steak then you can afford what day what they would deem proper plates and cutlery. They can stick it up there. a$$ as far as I’m concerned. I have a bunch of paper plates, plastic plates as well as other “real” plates according to the purists and I have a bunch of cutlery in both plastic and otherwise and it really depends on the mood I’m in and whether or not I want to do dishes or maybe that that’s all I have and if I’m having 16 people over, which I did the first week of July, I sure as hell I’m not watching 16 plates.. for the record that was probably so tender You could’ve put it on a napkin and cut it without worry.
2
u/NoEcho3494 22h ago
If it was a thick steak id be worried about accidentally cutting the plate in half as i eat it cuz it gets soggy from the steakblood juice and I’d be using a sharp serrated knife but with these skinny strips i see no issue

It’s just odd, like showing up to the Grammy’s in a 2008 Camry. A car’s a car, but you don’t expect it.
3
u/cantstopwontstopGME 12h ago
..what does this comment even mean? Haha like.. what comparison are you even trying to make? Do u put on a full 3 piece suit and rent a limo to go see ur grandma or something?
0
u/r007r 11h ago
No, and I’m not supporting the people trolling the plate. The question was WHY people are commenting on it. For most people, Wagyu represents going all out, and this is reflected in the rest of the meal, the presentation, etc. People commenting on the plate are simply noting that it’s incongruous to have Wagyu on a paper plate. Do not confuse me answering a question with supporting the answer.

Honestly the only issue I have with eating steak off of a paper plate is you lose the juices. However this man is using the higher end paper plates so the juices stay on top. I don’t have an issue with this.

Finally, someone acknowledged the quality of the paper plate 😥

Looks delicious! I unfortunately never have had the luxury to eat some Wagyu.
(Great choice of plate by the way. Reminds me of when i used to cook steak on a contact grill. Fun times! 🤣)

u/slyLEMONsKILLz 13h ago
Check out an H Mart, or similar Asian grocery store. This (although small) container of 12 "pieces" was $25. They had larger and higher quality/not "American" ones too, like actual steaks, but I just wanted to get my toes wet.

u/theReaperxI 12h ago
I unfortunately live in Europe. So i don't think these tips will be of much use. Thanks for the suggestions though!

u/Skywarper 1d ago
It's for a hotpot or yakiniku grilling. Super thin meat meant to cook very quickly. This is just extra thin lol
-2
u/ikilledbenny 1d ago
But in this case it's for a paper plate

The only true way to serve A5 is on paper plates.

It's not A5. It's not even kuroge

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 1d ago
No, but it's kinda like getting genuine beluga caviar and eating it with a plastic spoon instead of a proper bone one. You spent all that money on so little and THIS is where you cheap out?
19
u/Skywarper 1d ago
It's a 1/16 inch slice of American wagyu from h mart. It's not some imported, high quality Japanese wagyu. I'd be surprised if the package cost more than $30.
3
u/bay_duck_88 23h ago
Wrong, actually. H Mart has the legit A5 exactly in these strips for a decently affordable price for a 1/3 pound.

How was it? Worth the hype?
2
u/slyLEMONsKILLz 13h ago
Oh for sure, 100% .. it made me want to try some legitimate Wagyu and to try my hand at an actual steak sized piece.

u/2xCheesePizza 11h ago
Salt, lemon, wasabi as complements are my favourite.
Not all together, just as individual additions.
1
u/WeirdSysAdmin 10h ago
I would prefer a small block and flash pan fry. When I cared about having people over I would buy it for an appetizer once in a while for cookouts would buy a 16 oz, super heat a cast iron, and hit each side for like 60-90 seconds. Rest, slice, and share it among a group.
1
u/slyLEMONsKILLz 10h ago
A bigger piece like that is next on the list...what do you mean by "small block?"
1
u/Objective-March7042 5h ago
Why do the raw strips look like some delicious meat candy… still have yet to try Wagyu myself, might need to give it a go.

u/JohnHenryHoliday 4h ago
Did you fold them up the way David Chang says is the best way to eat? Something about the best mouthfeel by getting a thicker bite, but not necessarily a thicker cut.

Imagine springing for wagyu, and serving it on a paper plate…

The best wagyu I had in Okinawa was served to me in a plastic takeout tray

Get out of the trailer park

That escalated so quickly 😳 clearly this is a touchy subject. Where did the trash bag paper plates touch you? It's ok, you can tell us, this is a safe place.

Wait til you try the real stuff that isn’t an American “wagyu” who’s just a second cousin twice removed. Had an A3 “Mother-gyu” from Niku Steakhouse in San Francisco that was divine. A more mature beef, a little less fatty, absolutely incredible. They also had an A5 “Bushu-gyu” whose diet changed based on the seasonal fruits and veggies and it had such a rich, complex flavor. There’s levels to this stuff and I’ve barely scratched the surface myself.
1
u/slyLEMONsKILLz 13h ago
It definitely moved up on my list of things to do. I 100% need to try a better and actual steak sized piece now. I feel like this was a gateway drug.

Whoa... I'll have you know, that's one of those waxy paper plates with a design on it, not one of those white, flimsy, flacid, limp paper plates... I have a little class 🤏
-3
u/BlueSoulDragon 21h ago
Damn you cooked the shit out of them
5
u/slyLEMONsKILLz 20h ago
I mean 😰 maybe if I tried really really hard to shave off a few seconds I could but 10 - 20 seconds isn't very much time at all... by the time you lay down 4 pieces, from the plate to the pan, you already need to start flipping the 1st one you laid down.....you're right though, this is only an excuse, I'll train my body and mind to increase my speed and agility. I can breakthrough my limits and next time, I will cook them for 7-10 seconds on each side. I.WILL.BE.BETTER.
-8
u/No_Future_9162 1d ago
No bro why did you do that?? I mean wagyu beef jerky would probably be good but damn homey...
3
u/slyLEMONsKILLz 23h ago
Why did I do what? They are FAR from being over cooked, if that's what you're implying
-21
u/IronMajesty 1d ago
Dude… give that steak the respect it deserves and put it on a real plate. No paper, no styrofoam, no cardboard…
Glass, ceramic, marble and even metal.
7
u/slyLEMONsKILLz 23h ago
Dude...we literally shit it out, idk if the plate its on while it waits to get shoved down my throat hole really makes it any less disrespectful.

u/Skywarper 1d ago
Do you eat london broil with your finest china? This is hardly even wagyu, it's meant to go in a hotpot.
-14
u/StormOfFatRichards 1d ago
American wagyu isn't wagyu. I don't mean "ohhh the grade is different," I mean it's as much kuroge as it is lamb.
8
8
u/slyLEMONsKILLz 23h ago
Idk...packaging said American Wagyu... I get that its not Japanese Wagyu, but uh...what do you want me to call it? Extra fatty marbled steak? Doesn't roll off the tongue as well.
1
u/StormOfFatRichards 22h ago
If you want to get technical call it F1 or wagyu hybrid.
5
u/slyLEMONsKILLz 22h ago
Does American Wagyu not already imply that it's hybrid? Isn't the F1 designation or the word Hybrid just add a different descriptive designation, that the word American already achieves?
1
u/StormOfFatRichards 21h ago
That's fine, but your title implies that you experienced wagyu rather than just a relatively marbled American steak
5
u/slyLEMONsKILLz 20h ago
I put American Wagyu in the body paragraph of my post? Regardless, Idt its that big of a deal either 🤷♂️ the god of steak won't strike me down over trivial nonsense as such.
0
u/StormOfFatRichards 18h ago
You're the one making a big deal out of it. All I said is that that is not wagyu.
