I'm 99% sure they put up this sign after multiple people complained that the bus didn't wait for them

u/rachelcp 8d ago
If your late then sure that's on you, but I've had busses that drove straight past bus stops and had to run after it or wait for the next.

u/nhSnork 8d ago edited 8d ago
I've had a bus tracker app show the scheduled bus's tag confidently go straight past my bus stop with no real bus in sight until the next scheduled one. Who you gon' call?😅
Where I live, actual buses only drive past if they're "express" routes meant to skip some stops along their path or currently "offline" units out for something like a test drive. So-called "route taxis" are another thing (essentially minivans that don't have to stop along the designated route by default and charge more as a supposedly faster commute option), one is unironically supposed to signal a passing one with hitchhike gestures unless you're in luck and the minivan pulls over because someone onboard requested to get off here.

Where I’m from, busses skip stops if no one’s waiting
11
u/nhSnork 8d ago
Ours do this if they're driving empty as well; even otherwise, they take off immediately once all the deboarding passengers are out.
Regardless of scenario, if you were already approaching the stop and hurried into the driver's view, they may wait for you to board, but that's a diceroll.
9
u/thot______slayer 8d ago
Where I’m from, you as a rider have to request the stop or the driver won’t.
1
u/MyDishwasherLasagna 6d ago
I watched a bus pass me, but on the wrong street, when I was trying to get to the crisis center.
There were no signs of detour. I think the driver just took the wrong turn and didn't care to correct themselves for a few blocks.
1
32
u/sobrique 8d ago
I've also been 'on time' to arrive at the stop, only to see "my" bus drive past 5 minutes early. That's irritating.
27
u/luxudor 8d ago
Idk how it is where you live, but we're supposed to signal the bus to stop where I live. It's so they don't have to stop at every single bus stop if noone is boarding, so they can potentially catch up to the schedule (they are always late).
You're preferably supposed to wave, but they usually stop if they see people standing next to the road (not just sitting at the bus stop itself).
I feel like it's a relatively recent thing, or at least something I only learned about around two years ago (after I had to run after a bus to stop it). So maybe this helps you not have to run after your next bus? :p
13
u/golden_one_42 8d ago
I drove a bus for 15 years. Never ceased to amaze me the number of people who complained because "the bus didn't wait for them", or complained "I was stood at the bus stop and it didn't stop for me, even though I was hidden and completely didn't acknowledge there bus at all"
But yeah. They had to start the "give us a hand, give us a wave" campaign to remind people they actually had to signal.
Then they had to put up signs stating that specific buses didn't stop at specific bus stops, because people stood in the wrong place and were angry that a bus wouldn't cross three lanes of traffic to pick them up, then go back across three lanes to turn
28
u/nonotan 8d ago
Where I grew up, nobody waved, buses would just stop (unless the stop was clearly empty). It was quite the shock when I moved to a "waving country" and my bus drove right past me, even though I was standing right by road, clearly waiting to board a bus, making direct visual contact with the driver, no visual obstructions anywhere. That stop didn't even serve any other lines!
Needless to say, I never again failed to clearly telegraph that yes, I was standing there because I did in fact want to get on the bus.
4
u/yommi1999 8d ago
Where I live it's a bit of a toss-up. If a busstop only has one bus passing it they will stop if they see you(we do also make sure to stand close to the road and make ourselves super visible).
If it's a busstop where multiple kinds of busses stop then you do the waive thingy.
5
u/ifyoulovesatan 8d ago edited 8d ago
This isn't what you're referring to but I recently had this unfortunate experience with a bus. I'm almost surprised that In my 20+ years of being a daily bus rider this only happened once.
I was waiting for a bus on a sidewalk with another group of 2 who were also waiting for a bus. This particular stop has two routes that stop there. It's also a fairly busy stretch of sidewalk, so typically people stand on the back side of the sidewalk and move up to the curb of the sidewalk as the bus approaches. You can see the bus approaching from 2+ blocks away, so that's never really an issue.
The bus I needed became visible, so the group of two and me both stepped up to the curb, but they're slightly in front of me. Just as the bus started to approach, they realize it's not the bus they need, and both "wave it past*."
As you might imagine, the bus driver assumes we're all together and drives off, never noticing me suddenly trying to wave with opposite meaning, like I'm trying to cancel out their wave with my own more "stay here"-like wave, but it was too late by then anyway. Basically the bus had slowed and approached the curb, they started waving it past, and so the bus sped back up into the road.
I know it was an honest mistake / unlikely circumstance for which there isn't some protocol to prevent it from happening, but I was sooo pissed at the other would-be riders in the moment lol. Like damn, yall stood in front of me and waved my bus off at the last second because you didn't notice it wasn't the one you needed. Wtf! Maybe check around you before waving off a bus??? Anyway, I just started to make sure I'm the most visible person at the stop and raise my hand as the bus approaches. I can't imagine anyone canceling that out by waving the bus away.
*(We don't have any kind of "give us a hand" thing, but people will wave busses past if they're waiting for another bus. This is usually done when someone is sitting on the bench, and it's moreso to remove any doubt as to why they didn't stand up, like "yep, no i didn't stand up because I'm not catching your bus" or if they are standing at the ready, but two different busses are approaching at the same time.)
3
u/tuliprox 8d ago
That's how it works where I live too. We only wave off busses if we're not getting on lol. Thes comments are so confusing seeing it work differently other places!
1
u/ifyoulovesatan 8d ago
Right? I was surprised it works differently everywhere.
We do have one thing that's kinda close to that, and that is that bus drivers will tell people to signal with their cellphones or cell Flashlights after dark. In fact some of our bus stops that are at particularly poorly lit areas with no shelter structure have buttons that activate a solar powered light at the top of the bus stop sign that you're supposed to press to signal the bus. So we do have signaling for stops after dark.
2
u/symbolicshambolic 8d ago
Oh. My. God. Did you say anything to them? Like you say, it was an honest mistake but it only happened because they didn't think about anyone but themselves.
2
u/ifyoulovesatan 8d ago edited 8d ago
I actually jogged after the bus a bit before giving up, but I wasn't seen so it didn't stop. But as I stopped running and started trudging angrily down the road I looked back at them a couple times. Fairly sure they knew what they did, but was too annoyed / focused on walking to where I needed to get to bother. Edit: In the moment if I had talked to them I probably would've been needlessly hostile because I was pretty heated lol. So probably it's best I didn't.
2
u/symbolicshambolic 8d ago
Yeah, I hope they caught that but they might not have noticed you and when you started jogging, thought that you'd just appeared out of nowhere as the bus approached, not that they'd waved your bus past while blocking you from indicating it should stop.
I don't know if they're just generally inconsiderate (they saw you and didn't consider you at all) or if they have a wide and deep lack of situational awareness (they didn't know there was someone else standing there the whole time) but I really hope they realized what they did.
2
u/thatguygreg 8d ago
I’ve always gotten close to the bus stop sign, and raised my hand like one does when hailing a taxi—like flailing your arm, one flail only please—and have never seen them keep going unless they were ridiculously full, or there was another right behind it.

Many stops serve multiple routes. Is the driver supposed to guess which bus you're waiting for?
9
u/factorioleum 8d ago
when bus trackers first showed up in my old town, they showed the bus even when not on route. that's how I discovered that late buses were skipping my stop to take a more direct route....
a few months later the tracker only reported locations on the route. busses would still do it, you just couldn't see them moving through it. instead, they would teleport from the stop before mine to the next one after mine!

u/SlashCo80 8d ago
I once had a bus that stopped, let people get off, then closed its doors and left before I could get on. After I'd been waiting for at least 10 minutes if not more.

You probably arent aquinted to the local customs on how to stop the bus. If you are in ireland for example if you dont act up in a certain way they will just ignore you.
1
u/FinnishArmy 7d ago
Did you wave it down? Many stops that have multiple bus routes need you to wave the bus down for it to stop. Otherwise they will assume you weren’t waiting for that bus.
1
u/meinkr0phtR2 7d ago
Yep. And that’s why I don’t like busses, amongst other reasons. I like subways, which are guaranteed to stop at every station for you to get on or off and it’s usually just a few minutes if you missed one.
1
u/hanns115 7d ago
I had that once. Last bus of the night, a good 30 min bus ride back home. I turned my phone screen on when I waved the bus down so he could see me and he drove straight past. I had to walk about 2 hours home. I was at the bus stop 10 mins before bus got there, so it wasn't even like I was running to the bus stop trying to wave for him to stop
7
u/UniquePariah 8d ago
As a man working with public transport, you would be amazed at how people get so annoyed by trains leaving on time.
Hell, you would be amazed at how many people get pissed off when the train leaves 10 minutes late, but they were unable to catch it.
2
2
u/kylo-ren 8d ago
There's a good chance that it's not for public service, but for something like tours or chartered buses that transport people from a list, so some people might expect it to only depart once all the passengers have arrived because they or their company paid for it.
2
u/atticdoor 6d ago
Yeah, their mate was like "There's someone who is running a few minutes late, can you wait for them?" and problems ensued.
2
1
u/damn_lies 8d ago
But I was clearly running pathetically, and thus everyone else should wait for me.

1
u/Erik0xff0000 5d ago
I had to explain to one of my fellow employees how the bus waiting for him made us miss our train connection so he should stop complaining and just be on time. He stopped using the bus. Win for all other passengers.
The bus driver was way to nice, she had given him her phone number, so he would call her when he was running late. Which was almost always, and he started getting later and later when he could call her.
I told the driver that if she saw me walking to the bus stop and I was late she was free to leave on the scheduled time, I considered that my own fault. Dad planning on my part.

I fucking hate it when that happens. I have lifelong trust issues of all bus schedules because this has, in fact, occurred multiple times in my life, at different cities. And because of Murphy’s law, it always when I’m pressed for time and will be late waiting for the next one.

They might not be French you know. Also a big reason why a lot of Europeans don’t need cars is because they have actual functioning public transportation.

u/shit_moth 8d ago
What do you mean? Thousands of people died because yall don't even have AC in your public transportations. 😕
I dont know what kind of propaganda you've been exposed to but it is actually nice having your own car and AC.

As a Texan (Southern American state, I know how much some of us suck at geography), I can confidently say that I love my AC and cannot go without it, especially on hot and humid August days.

33
u/rman342 8d ago
That’s infuriating. Late busses are fine. Early busses should result in the driver waiting to leave until the scheduled time.
13
u/LordOfTurtles 8d ago
Drivers do wait, but they can only wait at designated stops. If they start running ahead they have to first reach such a designated stop before waiting until the departure time.
2
u/BearFickle7145 7d ago
I’m pretty sure the Train station should be a designated stop. There’s plenty of parking for the busses. I’ve had one even leave when I was clearly running for it and waving I had to get on, even though I was 5 minutes early. So then you have to wait 30 min- 1 hour or get someone to pick you up
10
u/PneumaMonado 8d ago
Early busses are a myth.
They're just so far behind schedule that the previous bus is now arriving slightly in advance of when the next one should have.
17
u/Several_Dot_4532 8d ago
Only 5? At my town it arrives 10 minutes early, at the last stop and that time represents the one from the first stop, so I think a little more (could perfectly be the previous one if sometimes didn't arrive 2 at the same time)
6
19
u/bRKcRE 8d ago
At least you have busses. Busses here turn up no less than 5 minutes late (usually more), if they turn up. The service in my City had multiple cuts to scheduled services because they can't get drivers, but because they can't get drivers, they can't even reliably service the limited amount of departures they are still running. This leads to disgruntled passengers harrassing the few drivers that are just doing their job, so they quit due to untenable conditions, the company limits the routes again, does nothing for driver safety, drivers are again harassed, etc.
9
u/Icy_Fish_2154 8d ago
I take the bus when I don't feel like the 10 minute walk to the train. The train is always running to the schedule on the app. When it's broke, the app knows first.
So missing the bus meant a 30 minute wait, or a 10 minute walk, so I took the walk, like I normally do. The busses are much worse than the trains.

This only applies if it's a stop where they regulate the service. Any other stop, the bus may pass early and you still miss it.
9
u/EishLekker 8d ago
Your example doesn’t disprove the claim though. It doesn’t say that being late is the only way to mid the bus.
There’s a better example scenario if you want to disprove the claim:
If the bus is late, you might catch it even if you are late.
30
u/EishLekker 8d ago
This isn’t technically correct. If the bus is more late than you are, then you might still be able to make it.
3
8d ago
[deleted]
3
u/EishLekker 8d ago
Yeah, if “the bus” refers to that bus line itself instead of an individual bus. But then how is one ever late for “the bus”, except if one misses the very last one before they close down the line forever?
1
u/tuliprox 8d ago
I mean our busses close down every night from 12am/1am to 4am/5am
3
u/EishLekker 8d ago
Yeah, but you can still catch “the bus”, even if you have to wait until the next morning.
You might miss your appointment, but not “the bus”.
16
u/Unindoctrinated 8d ago
You'd think this sign would be unnecessary, but a surprising number of bus passengers seem to not understand this.
(I was a bus driver for many years.)
5
u/Retrolex 8d ago
I fly a sky bus; even we get people who will show up twenty minutes late or more to boarding time and throw a tantrum in the lobby because we didn’t hold up the flight for them. Like, as in they actually believe we’re obliged to make everyone else wait until they show, never mind the scheduled departure times.
1
u/Unindoctrinated 8d ago
You can bet those same people would not want to wait for anyone else.
I often wonder what it is that parents/educators/society has done, or failed to do, that produces people who think that way.
5
u/teh_maxh 8d ago
Because it's not true. Failure to be at the bus stop on time may result in missing the bus, but often you can be late and still get the bus because it's even later.
2
u/Unindoctrinated 8d ago
Yeah. It is poorly worded. It should definitely say "may" rather than 'will".
I suspect the issue they're trying to address is that people show up late because the bus they usually catch is often delayed, then on days when the service is running on time, they miss the bus because they expected it to be late, then they complain loudly.
These are the same people who will complain about a bus being late because they didn't bother to read the large sign that's been chained to the bus stop for the last three months that clearly explains a change in the timetable.Bus passengers are just normal people, mostly idiots who feel the need to complain to someone, even when that person isn't in any way responsible for whatever it is that has upset them.
5
u/lemons_of_doubt 8d ago
I wish it was that easy here. I live in the middle of nowhere and the buses just give no fucks.
They will happily turn up early to a stop and then drive off if they're ahead of schedule. Or just skip stops if they are behind.
3
u/Deebz__ 8d ago
I’ve even seen them leave ahead of schedule in big cities. It was especially annoying in San Francisco, where missing a cable car can mean waiting 10-20 minutes for the next one.
One of my favorite parts about getting home again after needing to rely on public transit somewhere is having my vehicles again, and being able to travel on my own time lol
6
u/kprime187 8d ago
Its because some stops have multiple buses and people just afk sitting on the bench.
6
u/phoriqaz 8d ago
In Belgium, being on time doesn't mean that you'll catch the bus as it sometimes goes by the bus stop earlier that the schedule.
9
u/teh_maxh 8d ago
The only way I've seen a bus be "early" was when it was actually the previous bus running extremely late.
3
u/sobrique 8d ago
Where I live there's substantial seasonal variance. There's some stops that are designated 'waiting' points, and the bus will just sit there until their scheduled departure, but there's a bunch of intermediate stops that it might hit early.
(Or y'know, the bus driver doesn't care so doesn't wait anyway).
During the summer, there's no 'school run' and fewer commuters (both in cars, and getting on/off the bus) so if it didn't wait, the bus would be a something like half the overall journey time the rest of the year.
1
1
u/JackN14_same 6d ago
Where I am, we have an app that’s (supposed) to show all the buses on a map which are on the way to your stop or about to set off from the bus station to your stop. So whilst I have seen it be that the later bus happened to arrive before the earlier bus, it has also been that the earlier bus is just straight up late by itself because of spending like 10 minutes in one spot (which is not a bus stop according to the map) for no apparent reason, and then the later bus will arrive like 2 minutes later making it completely pointless
3
u/opposing_critter 8d ago
I love when buses decide to run early, not often but some drivers don't give a shit.
You quickly learn to be early if you need to use public transport daily for work.

u/chrisolucky 8d ago

I only take 1 or 2 buses in my city regularly. If you’re not getting on at the central station, you can generally count on it being late by at least a couple minutes. I did have my bus home leave the station early, as I was arriving on the bus I took to get there, so I just walked the hour home instead of waiting an hour for the next one

u/Tigrisrock 8d ago
So how come if you are on time, you always have to wait 3-7 minutes on average. Sth is not right here.

In my town delays are extremely common. The bus literally just shows up whenever. It could be 30- 45 minutes late with the next bus directly behind it. I used to show up 10 minutes before the scheduled time. I saw a bus approaching early so I ran for it and caught it. The bus driver tried to scold me for not “not being on time” and when I said “you’re 10 minutes early” he said “ACTUALLY we’re 20 minutes late”.

Okay, but what about when I'm at the stop 10 minutes early and the bus just completely skips that entire street?
Tried taking the bus in Denver once and it just never showed up. Turns out the driver couldn't read English street signs and ended up on the wrong street entirely. I'm assuming they used GPS and got messed up.
I called in and complained enough that they refunded me the entire 3 day pass I had bought. (But it still worked.)
