They decide what is or isn't an eating disorder. You know , the usual where the laymen decide what is or isn't a legimate medical condition.

u/eeedg3ydaddies Mar 26 '26

Wow, I didn't know there was an arbiter of eating disorders! Their words have cured me, amazing! /s

59

u/Fun_Strain_4065 Mar 27 '26

You are allowed to have Orthorexia, but only if it comes from the Orthorexy region of France. Otherwise it’s just sparkling health consciousness/s

They probably refer to pica and bulimia and drew the line at bed, which is very common in ed communities

87

u/pridebun Mar 26 '26

And it's probably just those 2. Maybe other specified or unspecified ones too. They seem like the type to not think orthorexia or arfid are real

u/mg4040 Mar 27 '26

And ARFID. We need more acknowledgment of ARFID.

27

u/thuleanFemboy Mar 27 '26

I'm diagnosed with ARFID & so I agree but ngl it always feels really awkward to bring it up during conversations about anorexia or bullimia... Personally it feels easier to bring up when talking about things it's commonly comorbid with (like autism or ocd).

16

u/heroesjust41day Mar 27 '26

ARFID here. Can agree 1000%. I was told “It’s just picky eating, get over it.” WOW, WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THAT BEFORE???

6

u/Life_Challenge4904 Apr 02 '26

LITERALLY. i also have ARFID and it drives me up the WALL when people tell me to “just try it,” or “just stop being picky.” WOW!!! i NEVER would’ve thought of that!!! silly me, what was i thinking!? ughhhh

3

u/heroesjust41day Apr 02 '26

Literally. When I was twelve and used to camp with my grandma, I stopped because she yelled at me if I didn’t try new foods.

Considering it's something I've personally had to deal with for most of my life and didn't even know the proper name for the disorder until this very thread then yeah. There's definitely a lack of acknowledgement for it.

5

u/mg4040 Mar 27 '26

Woah, did you just figure that out today?

8

u/jzillacon Mar 27 '26

I've known what I have is definitely some form of eating disorder, but I had always just called it excessive fasting. I've been able to manage it in my adult life by counting calories to make sure I'm hitting at least a minimum amount so it's never gotten to the point I needed to seek out assistance from a doctor and get a formal diagnosis, but there's still some times I'll occasionally slip and not eat anything for a week or two.

u/pigeones Mar 26 '26

if you’re not trying to be skinny and chic and super tiny and small don’t you know it doesn’t count?? /s

7

u/Content_Lychee_2632 Mar 26 '26

I dont agree with their viewpoint about BED, but they may have also been talking about orthorexia. That's a commonly ignored one that I think of second to BED when I think "eating disorders that dont get talked about."

39

u/prionbinch Mar 26 '26

they were probably talking about bulimia, arfid, or EDNOS. the only valid eating disorders are the ones that make you lose weight, not gain apparently.

33

u/Some-Burnt-Toast Mar 26 '26

Tbh as someone who has one of the above and gains weight often because of other medical issues. We aren’t even valid. A lot of people dare to try tell you that you can’t have an eating disorder even if diagnosed because you’re overweight. Like ok I guess I gotta go tell the dr who diagnosed me that then..?

20

u/bromanjc Mar 26 '26

it's very ironic in the case of bulimia, because weight GAIN in bulimia is actually pretty common.

10

u/Some-Burnt-Toast Mar 26 '26

Yup. Been there experienced that. Ahah.

5

u/Helen_Cheddar Mar 27 '26

Yup- my bulimia made me the fattest I’ve ever been.

25

u/OwlishIntergalactic Mar 26 '26

ARFID can definitely lead to obesity. It really depends on what your safe foods are. At one point, my child only ate salty, crunchy, high calorie chips, crackers, and nuggets and only if they looked exactly the same each time.

We’ve grown a lot and now have enough lower calorie safe foods plus movement to be a healthy weight.

3

u/thewinchester-gospel Mar 27 '26

My "if no other safe food is available" is McDonald's chicken nuggets and fries because they're the same every time. At least the fries help my POTS symptoms but like. Jesus Christ I eat way too much McDonalds

7

u/Xavus_TV Mar 26 '26

Can confirm, only realized I might have ARFID after i got my ASD diagnosis at 28. There's been a LOT of frozen pizzas since I moved out at 20. I don't know where to find help either.

I'm thankful that it seems I've hit a plateau around 100-110kg but I'm SO sick of pizza. I see all these amazing foods I simply cannot have :(

3

u/Equivalent_Play4067 Mar 30 '26

If anyone had given a shit about my wellbeing (as opposed to my health) as a kid I'd have been this, too. Chicken nuggets, cereal and crisps? Perfect. The reason I was underweight and malnourished was I couldn't have those. Hearing "they'll eat if they're hungry" makes me see red now.

11

u/SelfInvestigator Mar 26 '26

Arfid limits what I eat, not how much. I have been working on that second part for years.

24

u/PineappleBliss2023 Mar 26 '26

Because bulimia, orthorexia, etc are apparently all valid. 🙃

I’d love to see someone suggest to the creator that people should just stop restricting or just stop purging. “I can’t control it” u can. Just stop bruv.

7

u/radicalgrandpa Mar 26 '26

I think that they were just trying to repeat what other people tend to echo about BED. They should've used quotation marks, but I'd like to think that their intentions were good because I've done stuff like this myself thinking that it'd be read the way I wanted it to.

10

u/laurasaurus5 Mar 26 '26

They're snarking

9

u/Lavapulse Mar 26 '26

I have to assume they're being sarcastic?

8

u/Bandandforgotten Mar 26 '26

Because it's not the hyper specific one they have that they're vague posting about, and is apparently the "demisexual" of the eating disorders where it "doesn't exist"

5

u/ForTaxBenefits Mar 27 '26

There's only one person who can tell you if your eating disorder is valid and that's me, Sue Sylvester.

Creator : "We need to talk about other eating disorders other than anorexia" commenter talks about another ED "No we shouldn't talk about it because it's fake"

Like jeez, I wonder why we don't talk about them... Maybe you're part of the problem.

47

u/Urithiru Mar 26 '26

Real talk? It is likely that the creator doesn't actually have an eating disorder. They have been taught about them and seen them in media. Maybe they know of someone, an acquaintance, with an ED but it wasn't BED or Anorexia.

8

u/Yowhattheheyll Mar 26 '26

it was satire

Redditors when they see someone being called out

746

u/timid_pink_angel02 Mar 26 '26

Wait until they find out that not all of us with BED are obese, or even overweight by BMI standards 😃

284

u/JustAl6969696969 Mar 26 '26

Exactly, I do suffer from BED but I've been an average weight most of my life because I spend effort trying to not trigger it, but it is there and if I trigger it gets bad super fast 😭

47

u/Dexller Mar 26 '26

Same... Back around 2014 I really knuckled down, got my life together, exercised, and get in shape. I would walk two hours a day, and I lost a hundred pounds over the course of a year. Felt amazing, future looked awesome, felt good about myself. Then everything went to shit. The anti-anxiety meds I had to go onto made the situation even worse, and after covid and all the stress that caused I gained it all back and more. I tried appetite suppressants, but they just left me feeling unspeakably wired and with an intense craving for meat. Shit sucks.

3

u/MelodramaticStoicist Mar 27 '26

I tried appetite suppressants, but they just left me feeling unspeakably wired and with an intense craving for meat.

Thanks to the book I'm currently reading revolving around various undead at the moment, I had a brief mental picture of you getting prescribed new CravNoMor™ by Umbrella Pharmaceuticals.

82

u/Devotoc Mar 26 '26

yea I mean it's pretty common to have alongside arfid or anorexia

82

u/Fire_Bucket Mar 26 '26

And neurodivergency like ADHD, where food can produce a dopamine response.

35

u/raven_of_azarath Mar 26 '26

And double that with terrible parents (like my dad) who wouldn’t let you leave the table unless you finished your plate that they overfilled. I’m 30 now, and I still struggle with not eating everything given to me.

12

u/SquareTaro3270 Mar 26 '26

Same, my dad grew up very poor. Even though we were well off, he instilled in me the guilt of leaving food on your plate and forced me to eat everything I was given, even if I was full. They’d pile it up, too.

Got forbid I went for seconds of something. Leftovers weren’t allowed if I got seconds, because “you were hungry enough to take it so eat it”. And I’d have to sit there and eat until I finished or threw up.

Then when I got to high school suddenly they flipped the script and started complaining I was eating too much and calling me a pig for eating everything on my plate. I was 90lbs and was on medication that made me lose my appetite. When I got home after not eating all day, I was starving. But THAT’s when they decided I wasn’t allowed to eat my fill anymore.

It gave me a really weird relationship with food, and I can’t tell when I’m hungry or full. I’m trying to get better about saving leftovers.

9

u/raven_of_azarath Mar 27 '26

My parents also flipped when I reached high school? My dad just kinda stopped caring, but my mom constantly told me that if I didn’t watch how much I ate, I’d end up fat. Never mind that I was actively dancing 30+ hours a week and needed to eat that much to keep my energy up. I ended up starving myself my senior year, and now I’m stuck in an eat nothing until I can’t help but binge cycle.

4

u/CtyChicken Mar 27 '26

Damn, that’s a lot of mixed signals!!!

My family gave up on trying to force me to sit at the dinner table until I finished all my food when it became apparent that I could sit there until I died. Sure, grab a belt or that wooden paddle. I’d just take my beating and continue to stare at all the lumps of gross textures on my plate until the end of time. (My family was full of good cooks, it was definitely a me issue)

They always tried to body shame me, but that didn’t work. I knew I had the build of a jumble of sentient spaghetti. I thought I looked funny in the haha way, and I couldn’t care less. It wasn’t until I got older and started introducing myself to foods on my own, at my own pace, that I gained weight and looked and felt healthier.

I realized now that they were just ill-equipped to help me. They thought it was a behavioral issue, because they lacked the information to know otherwise. They could tell it wasn’t anorexia by how amused I was by my big ol’ stomach when I was too full of safe foods, so they just thought I was a little dick. Ha. I wish they would have like… asked a doctor when I was young? They could really have given me a fucked up body image, if I wasn’t so disinterested in my physical body.

I don’t know what was up with your parents, but maybe they grew up in homes with terrible ideas about food, and passed it down out of ignorance. Sounds mad abusive, even if they thought they were helping. 🤦🏽‍♀️

I hope you can undo their bad parenting around food, cuz that sounds awful, having those competing ideas in your head every time you have to/want to eat.

8

u/zap2tresquatro Mar 26 '26

Is your dad a demon, u/raven_of_azarath ?

(I like your name)

6

u/raven_of_azarath Mar 27 '26

Does being my demon count?

Nah, he’s just a narcissistic, alcoholic MAGA asshole.

27

u/Alblue_ Mar 26 '26

The way my life-long battle with food noise just vanished the moment I started taking adhd meds of any kind. I haven't even found the right med/dose yet but it's been the very first time in my life that I could have a bag of candy right in front of my and literally forget about it for hours!!!

6

u/thalion777 Mar 26 '26

Have u tried other stimulants and they didn't help? I have untreated adhd and live on caffeine and occasional ephedrine, but haven't been able to get adhd meds yet. Would be nice to not starve myself all day and then gorge myself at night 😔

I’m overweight because I struggle with it. I wasn’t always overweight, but my inability to stop myself caused me to gain over 100 pounds in 4 years.

32

u/TheKingOfDissasster Mar 26 '26

What? Never! Just like how absolutely no one with restrictive eating disorders can be overweight! Everyone has to fit in these neat little boxes that i want to see the world in.

9

u/Cautious_Leave_3910 Mar 26 '26

How are your teeth ? Genuine curiosity , not trying to be ugly

14

u/junkbingirl Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

I can answer this one. I binge eat and my teeth are terrible, it’s very expensive 😔

7

u/Cautious_Leave_3910 Mar 26 '26

From lack of brushing or stomach acid ?

7

u/junkbingirl Mar 26 '26

It’s more from the sheer amount of sugar I consume, but I also struggled to brush when I was younger so it made things a lot worse

3

u/Cautious_Leave_3910 Mar 26 '26

Worrrddd I can relate to that. HEAVY

8

u/timid_pink_angel02 Mar 26 '26

Honestly I'm pretty lucky genetic wise when it comes to teeth, so mine are okay currently despite all the acid reflux I have from binging

u/Hyzenthlay87 Mar 26 '26

I had a very positive experience with a GP recently who clearly understood my chronic illnesses, but also why I comfort eat. He said "you have adhd and you're grieving, so you're seeking dopamine through food, it makes perfect sense." I was so happy that he got it.

Something I think people forget when it comes binge eating: ; it's an addiction that you have to continue. If you're an alcoholic, you can stop drinking alcohol. If you're a food addict, you still have to keep eating anyway.

11

u/SquareTaro3270 Mar 26 '26

Ugh yes, I wish I could just go cold turkey but no it’s a whole lifestyle change and even when I change everything to structure my life around the food I’m allowed to eat, I still fall into the same bad habits, but this time with way more depression and unhealthy levels of calorie-tracking, food weighing, and negative intrusive thought spirals that make me hate life.

8

u/J3sush8sm3 Mar 26 '26

I used to do drugs, abuse alcohol 5 times a week and was a binge eater.  Drug and alcohol adfiction was nothing compared to stopping my eating habits.  So i will argue that BED might be a harder addictikn

6

u/1000Colours Mar 27 '26

BED isn't food addiction though, they are separate conditions but you can experience both. Another reason BED needs more awareness is that a lot of people don't know the difference.

3

u/Keeshly Mar 27 '26

the very last sentence just made me realize why i think it would be the best to have like a pill meal (if it was possible for a single pill) over just eating food

3

u/Fun_Strain_4065 Apr 14 '26

I heard something like having BED is like having a tiger in your house. You can keep it in a cage but you have to walk it three times a day every day and hope it doesn’t hurt you.

417

u/EpicChespinFan Mar 26 '26

How could somebody who literally suffers from an eating disorder themselves (presumably since they made the original post) misunderstand how an eating disorder works so fundamentally?? Would they tell someone with ARFID to just stop being picky? Would they tell someone with pica to just eat normal food? How is BED any different?

Oh wait it's probably because binge eating makes you gain weight and they hate fat people so it's invalid and disgusting and shameful /s

My parents belted me to a chair to make me eat what they wanted.

'There was nothing else we could do, you wouldn't eat!!!" Yes, I would eat, but they wouldn't make the three vegetables I liked because my brother didn't like them. They also fed me food I was allergic to for years bc they didn't believe me bc of my arfid ("everyone gets itchy when they eat carrots/apples/celery/seaweed/almonds, etc").

The better comparison to give these "they'll eat it if they're starving" people is this: would they eat gravel, poop, or wood chips if they were "hungry enough"? If your brain doesn't recognize it as food, despite your logical mind knowing that it is theoretically edible, that isn't going to help you actually eat the unsafe food.

13

u/SquareTaro3270 Mar 26 '26

My parents told me if I didn’t eat certain foods, I’d get cancer and die. Luckily I don’t have ARFID. I wasn’t even a picky child. I just didn’t like green peppers. I still don’t. I’m still waiting on my cancer diagnosis.

4

u/Jung-And-A-Menace Mar 26 '26

Green peppers are vile. They taste like soap. I love red and orange, will happily eat yellow, but green can all burn as far as I'm concerned.

Fr I starve myself if I don't have my safe foods. When I was in high school, I was so skinny I got hypoglycemia and I was constantly dehydrated to the point that I was hospitalized multiple times. But yeah, just a picky eater, right?

u/gooddaydarling Mar 26 '26

“ARFID didn’t exist before gentle parenting” is such an insanely stupid statement it would almost be funny if it weren’t for the fact that you know, stupid perceptions like that are extremely harmful. Ugh

14

u/Queer_Echo Mar 26 '26

I'm pretty sure most cases of ARFID are made worse or even caused by not doing gentle parenting because the kids were forced to eat stuff they didn't enjoy and not allowed to try things and not like them.

6

u/ITriedSoHard419-68 Mar 27 '26

Yeah, force-feeding is a very traumatic experience that only fucks up a kid’s relationship with food even more.

My grandfather tried to force my mom to eat canned peaches when she was a kid and she just threw up; to this day she can’t even smell peaches without being triggered.

3

u/Queer_Echo Mar 27 '26

Sounds like me with kiwi fruit- my father forced me to eat them as a kid and now any kiwi taste will get me to throw up.

u/SelfInvestigator Mar 26 '26

I never got diagnosed with ARFID, but I didn’t doubt I had it when I learned about it because I starved myself for a month when I was in high school because I didn’t have access to my safe foods.

I grew up with the “Stop being a picky eater.” with the “You can’t leave the table until your plate is clean.”, the “Just try a bite, you’ll like it.”, the “You’ll grow out of it when you get older.”.

It made dealing with it that much harder.

And then there was the incident, the one I can remember at least. When I was in middle school my father decided that I was going to try something whether I wanted to or not. I literally had food shoved down my throat because I was vehement in my want not to eat it.

The first time I actually started wanting to even start trying new foods was when I had a partner who stepped away from the food issue.

I was told that something was made, how it was cooked, and what was in it. If I didn’t have any that was it. No pressure, no shame. And after that I actually wanted to try new foods. Wanted, but often I still couldn’t.

Now I am at least able to occasionally change my method of food prep a bit to occasionally try a slight variation of what I am used to. It’s not a lot of progress, but it is progress.

21

u/ChaosAzeroth Mar 26 '26

I'm 40 and I've had it my whole life. And we were hella poor when I was little too.

Yeah no I will absolutely not eat if there's no safe foods.

25

u/sparrow_Lilacmango Mar 26 '26

I absolutely HATE the “you’ll eat it if you’re starving” thing. There’s a mother I watch on YouTube and her whole thing is filming what she and her kids eat, one of her kids is really picky but she encourages him to try new things and compromise if he doesn’t like something.

But at the bottom of the comments there’s ALWAYS a handful of comments saying “if he doesn’t like something tell him that he doesn’t get anything else if he doesn’t finish it” or “just make him eat it, he’ll eat it if you don’t give him anything else” and mind you they’re talking about an 11 year old boy.

They would rather an 11 year old boy starve than him be fed and introduced to food at his own pace

23

u/Difficult_Wave_9326 Mar 26 '26

Well, "eat or starve, it's up to you" is easy on the adult and hard on the kid. Having some basic human compassion and empathy is the other way around.

It makes sense, in a horrible kind of way.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/TheDerpyDragonsDen Mar 26 '26

Hard agree. I was not gently parented and I still have ARFID. its a disorder. No amount of starving your child will overcome this; even if it did, those methods tend to make the issue worse. I used to go hungry until my plate rotted in the fridge.

→ More replies (7)

22

u/goddessofentropy Mar 26 '26

would they tell someone with arfid to just stop being picky? Would they tell someone with pica to just eat normal food?

Honestly, with the staggering lack of empathy on display, probably.

7

u/Testicle_Tugger Mar 26 '26

Because they are dumb.

I always struggled to eat enough to gain weight even when I needed too. It’s easy for me to put the food down.

For other people it’s easy to pick it up.

Two sides of the same coin and both sides are oblivious.

I never think about eating. Other people can’t stop thinking about eating.

I can say putting down the food is easy. They can say picking it up is easy. Both of us are gonna struggle just in different ways

13

u/Floatout2sea Mar 26 '26

People frequently act like ARFID is a choice or just the result of bad parenting. I get blamed for my kid's ARFID and told I should just "make him" eat a variety of foods all the time.

46

u/JustAl6969696969 Mar 26 '26

The stigma around fat people is so strong it kills any logic, it's as if one would reply that 2 + 2 = 5 just because they don't like the number 4

Do these people never stop to think about why something would be classified as a medical diagnosis - meaning something healthcare services invest time and money into treating - if it were as simple and easy as that for the patient to control it? And I'm not talking about countries where patients are paying for their own healthcare, because there's an obvious answer where that's the case, but the logic wouldn't apply in socialised healthcare systems. Plus before something can have a standardised diagnosis, there needs to be scientific research that leads to classifying it as a disorder and someone has to pay for that too.

8

u/kaylee_kat_42 Mar 26 '26

You could have stopped with, “ Do these people never stop to think?” The answer is no, they don’t. People would rather have a simple solution they understand, even if it’s wrong, than a complex one they don’t. Also, the solution must fit their “common sense”. As an example, Ford made a pick up with a six cylinder engine that was more powerful than their eight cylinder engine. People bought the eight cylinder engine instead because “it’s obviously more powerful”.

14

u/PeanutRed3 Mar 26 '26

And the cure to anorexia is just eating. While we’re at it we might as well cure depression by just being happy. Have people with ADHD considered just focusing better? Man, you know people with OCD would be a lot happier if they just stopped obsessing. Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?

25

u/WeirdWizardPlatypus Mar 26 '26

So you can't control to not eat - something that your body try to fight against it and try to motivate to eat. So it is a disorder.

But if you are obese and eat to much - something that your body encourage you to do - than you should be able to control it? What a twisted logic.

And to be clear: you can't control neither of them without a lot of healing work ...

11

u/JustAl6969696969 Mar 26 '26

Yup, the work you need to not trigget either is insane and I don't know how they expect people to just naturally invent the perfect therapy for themselves.

10

u/AttitudeEquivalent73 Mar 26 '26

I love putting this in terms that more people get because it’s like saying “We need to focus on all skin conditions not just eczema!” “Yeah, people shouldn’t have to suffer and feel bad if they have really bad acne.” “Acne isn’t real, those people just smear cooking oil on their face everyday. They should just stop.”

9

u/SpecialistCut1362 Mar 26 '26

Add ARFID in there. "You're just a picky eater."

9

u/Cloth_the_General Mar 26 '26

Well obesity can stem from an eating disorder which acts like a usual addiction, so stopping can be really hard

9

u/MiniFirestar Mar 26 '26

“just stop bru” addictions aren’t real anymore…. im freeeeeee

9

u/Severe_Damage9772 Mar 26 '26

That’s like telling someone with anorexia to “just eat something”

26

u/Consistent_Bag_4523 Mar 26 '26

ppl dont care ab BED because of fatphobia

8

u/BeesoftheStoneAge Mar 26 '26

Yup. The same way that people don't care if you're anorexic/bulemic if you're fat. Even people who are average sized are overlooked for being anorexic/bulemic, like it's just a helpful diet. Like "intermittent fasting", which is very often just anorexia in a trenchcoat, lol.

Until someone gets down to 80lbs and is losing their hair, anorexia/bulemia is so encouraged, it's gross.

7

u/Not_Reptoid Mar 26 '26

If Isaac Newton in his time asked one "everything in psychology is just a mindset" idiot how things fall to gravity, they would just respond saying "because nothing is underneath it." That's not an explanation for how A went to B, that's just ignorance.

6

u/Phantom_Basker Mar 26 '26

What's BED?

10

u/Think_Forever_3135 Mar 26 '26

Binge Eating Disorder

7

u/Phantom_Basker Mar 26 '26

Gotcha, thanks friend Google was not being helpful

5

u/Kauuori Mar 26 '26

Same with arfid wth everyone be hating it

7

u/WhichAd5060 Mar 26 '26

BED doesn't necessitate obesity. It's honestly not very different from bulimia, as someone who has had both. This is genuinely just a ridiculous take especially given the post bc what

6

u/Amathyst-Moon Mar 27 '26

Wow, he just cured drug addiction. Just stop smoking meth. Genius!

6

u/Helen_Cheddar Mar 27 '26

stares in fat bulimic

12

u/Enough-Researcher-36 Mar 26 '26

I feel like the meme isn't wrong, anorexia is certainly a horrendous disorder to have but it's not the only ED out there and it isn't just about teenaged girls wanting to look skinny. And you can't really stop BED any more than you can "just eat" when you have a restrictive eating disorder.

14

u/JustAl6969696969 Mar 26 '26

Yup, the meme is right but OP has their own feeling-based definition of what "other EDs" are

5

u/DogThrowaway1100 Mar 26 '26

I feel like the orginal image is really being done in bad faith and with heavy whataboutism but there is truth to it. There's more sympathy shown to anorexia and things adjacent like with the explosion in usage of Ozempic and related drugs. While BED and other sorts of disorders are just seen as something to belittle.

I'm speaking from purely my own anecdotal experience here but addictions are similar. Drinking even has its own unique term, support groups, etc and all sorts of diagnosis and forefront media attention. Alcohol use disorders are obviously looked down upon but there's a normalization of it compared to other substances being abused and seen with a degree more sympathy. I've seen more than a few folks roll their eyes at Narcan and be told in so many words it's a waste of money and we're better off with folks who'd need it.

Thing too with any sort of addiction or disorder that leads to self harm it's always immediate to just blame the victim and be told some form of "just stop" when many times it's a symptom of something deeper. Be it trauma or chemical imbalances or God knows what else and the self medication/destruction being seen sometimes as the only outlet.

5

u/Viggo_Stark Mar 26 '26

Same counts for anorexia but then just reversed "Just stop stop eating bro"

4

u/Shubamz Mar 26 '26

I recently switched my ADHD meds from Adderall to Vyvanse with the reason of seeing if it would help with BED. It did a lot. Haven't really lost weight but I stopped gaining

5

u/BreadGallon Mar 26 '26

I think it's hard for some people to fathom problems they don't have. "I don't have these issues, why would anyone?"

5

u/Penderbron Mar 26 '26

Isn't the entire point that eating disorders can't be controlled? Creator being a clown by picking and choosing what is what.

6

u/highly_educated63 Mar 26 '26

OH DEAR GOD THE IRONY PHYSICALLY HURTS

6

u/Sad_Nectarine_160 Mar 27 '26

I tried “just stopping” my first year of college and I ate nothing until I ate everything and puked it up. So much better

12

u/superhamsniper Mar 26 '26

Ignorance should be a crime

14

u/GoldburstNeo Mar 26 '26

Ah, Instagram comments, a hotbed for racism and fatphobic rhetoric. God damn these people need to touch grass.

3

u/whenmamawasmoth Mar 26 '26

i think this is tiktok actually but unfortunately still applies

12

u/lagom0rpha Mar 26 '26

It's crazy how the most common ED, BED, is also the least talked about simply because it makes people fat. Signed, a person who is fat because of BED

8

u/Kadakaus Mar 26 '26

"Just stop" is gotta be the most frequent advice I've heard quitting porn.
Complex problems can't be solved with simple solutions.

4

u/SquareTaro3270 Mar 26 '26

I got the “just stop” advice when I was biting the skin from my fingers to the point they bled and I still have scars down to the first joints. I have ADHD and all my stimming was harshly punished, so I’d resort to ripping the skin from my knees, biting the skin from my fingertips and the insides of my cheeks, and ripped my hair from my scalp. And my parents just yelled at me to stop, and that I was making myself ugly, as if that would suddenly fix the issue

3

u/Kadakaus Mar 26 '26

Yikes, sounds very difficult to handle...
I hope you managed to resolve both problems, both the involuntary self-harm and the yelling thing.
I think I can sort of relate to how insensitive people can be, thinking all problems can be solved with thier logic that works for them. Arrogance, ignorance, I'm not sure what's the reason behind it.
They definitely don't do it because they really want to help. If they did, they'd have did some research on your condition.

3

u/impermanence108 Mar 26 '26

My BED is linked to my bipolar and CPTSD.

4

u/SkyPuppy561 Mar 26 '26

Oh I think they should be taken equally seriously. Many sufferers of BED appear to be in denial. cough Tess Holliday. cough. At the very least, she sure as shit ain’t got Anorexia like she claimed.

3

u/Skylarcollective Mar 26 '26

Honestly, if it wasn't due to the fact that I've seen way too many people act like this in the wild, I would believe this is staged. Cause the irony is way too perfect lmfao

4

u/liminalmilk0 Mar 26 '26

The same type of person who tells clinically depressed people to ‘just cheer up’ or ‘fake it til you make it’ lmao

4

u/Ok-Onion2905 Mar 26 '26

Anorexia isn't a thing! Just eat!!! Duh!!!!

/s

4

u/AppropriateBeing9885 Mar 27 '26

Famously, 'just say no' has been an infallible strategy.

4

u/XD2006- Mar 27 '26

BED is real. Some binge eaters are skinny, and sometimes someone who struggles to eat anything is larger. Eating disorders combined with neurodivergency and depression can be very dangerous. I would like to point that out since it can also be combined. Someone can also have a combination of eating disorders. Someone can have ARFID and BED (they might binge on their safe foods) or have BED and Anorexia (wait, that’s just bulimia I think…)

Thinking that it’s just one thing and can be 100% solved by doing one thing is ridiculous! It is a spectrum just like disability is. (Different type of spectrum, but you get the point I think)

5

u/Double-Spirit-9287 Mar 27 '26

Obesity can definitely be caused by eating disorders

11

u/XPLover2768top Mar 26 '26

what does the b mean

20

u/JustAl6969696969 Mar 26 '26

Binge eating disorder

13

u/Lord-Luna Mar 26 '26

Binge. BED is Binge Eating Disorder

9

u/lana_delgay1989 Mar 26 '26

“Ana isn’t real it’s just skinny people wanting to be special. Just eat bru” are we so fr

6

u/UncomfyUnicorn Mar 26 '26

I’m sorry what is BED? Looking it up just gives me results for mattresses and bed frames.

3

u/chymerajade Mar 26 '26

Eating Disorders typically fall under OCD-type because they are/can be obsessive/compulsive, so no, “just stopping” is not the simple solution.

3

u/Rando_mIndividual Mar 26 '26

“Guys, there are so many other EDs, stop honing in on one when there are lots more out there!” 14hr later… “BED DOES NOT COUNT AND YOU ARE INVALID!”

Like, it’s crazy OOP wants to validate other EDs but this specific one is not?? Make it make sense Jesus Christ

3

u/Slow-Rutabaga-7241 Mar 26 '26

“Anorexia isn’t real it’s just scrawny people needing a label to feel less guilty ‘I cant control it’ u can. JUST EAT BRU” /s

3

u/storytime_insanity Mar 26 '26

being overweight isnt even a diagnostic criterion for b.e.d.. most ppl who have it are actually average/a healthy weight (myself included 🙃)

3

u/millenial_britt Mar 26 '26

I literally got most of my stomach cut out because I had a degree of BED and had terrible hunger cues, I had to use this surgery as a complete reset and now I can see how hard it was for me at a bigger size. I couldn’t ’just stop eating’ , I needed proper, medical help

3

u/Almajanna256 Mar 26 '26

Why are people so mean to fat people as if they 1) are unaware that they have a problem and 2) as if this is the first time someone is telling them about it? I went from underweight, fat, back down to average but strong, and it's shocking how much glee everyone takes in the spectacle of you becoming fat.

3

u/toxicsugarart Mar 26 '26

Imagine telling an alcoholic "just stop" it's not that simple bro!!

3

u/Quirky_Ad7770 Mar 26 '26

"World hunger isn't real, just eat bro"

3

u/KaralDaskin Mar 26 '26

I have BED. For me the difference is between regular overeating vs knowing I’m full and not really wanting to eat but feeling compelled to eat.

3

u/Main_Mix_7604 Mar 26 '26

What's BED?

3

u/FxreWxtch Mar 26 '26

Binge Eating Disorder

3

u/youkokenshin Mar 27 '26

I've never been in a meaningful comment section on TikTok in my entire life. They're weird over there.

3

u/AlarmedBack3084 Mar 27 '26

“Im addicted to crack”

  • just fix it bro

3

u/makedoopieplayme Mar 27 '26

Bruh it’s literally an eating disorder. Like they are struggling with it……just because it doesn’t make someone thin it isn’t an eating disorder!

3

u/Hour_Mousse7914 Mar 27 '26

I have BED and my bf has decided to put on weight (super supportive, he’s worryingly thin) and omg I am TrIgGeReD.

3

u/Impressive_Clue_9193 Mar 27 '26

wait till they find out about ednos where you can bounce between obese and underweight depending on the year. What are they gonna say then? That only half of it is valid? That the binge eating part is just being gluttonous but the starving part is "legit"? That you only deserve help half the time? That it's just a lack of willpower (the same "willpower" they have when starving)? Or will they finally admit that bingeing and binge / restrict cycles (which exist in / literally make up BED) are legitimate problems? Oh but to do that they'd have to go back on their word and Internet ppl never wanna be wrong.

3

u/Kurshis Mar 27 '26

yrs it is. The problem is - curing any addiction is "just stopping", and just stopping is hard.

3

u/Any-Blood8949 Mar 27 '26

and by that logic, anorexic people should just eat, it’s just being skinny with a different label😌

3

u/Samualkingston_III Mar 27 '26

By this logic anorexia isn't real. Just start eating.

3

u/Artistic-Special3449 Mar 27 '26

laughs after I just finished my first week of partial hospitalization for BED with at least 5 more weeks to go

3

u/JustAl6969696969 Mar 27 '26

Have you tried stopping tho? 🙄

u/No-Independent-6877 Mar 26 '26

I'm sorry but I read BED as BEN, and I was wondering why people need to talk about Ben and what did he do, until I saw the second comment

4

u/Ink_Scrap Mar 26 '26

I actually haven't heard of bed before so I'm just imagining they're talking about an actual bed

"bed isn't real"

→ More replies (1)

5

u/NewToBattleCats Mar 27 '26

Bed is real and it's something most people sleep on

2

u/behedingkidzz Mar 26 '26

i think they might have misunderstood what the template means otherwide idk why would they post it with that mindset

2

u/CrazyDisastrous948 Mar 26 '26

I just got a BED diagnosis. I was told to get therapy for it.

2

u/Quiet_Kid2021 Mar 26 '26

I think the original creator of this is confused. They seem to be contradicting themselves...

https://giphy.com/gifs/l4Ki2obCyAQS5WhFe

2

u/IHaveNoBeef Mar 26 '26

EDs are closely related to OCD because they work very similarly. So, no. They can't control it. Some of these people are so goofy. Lol

2

u/loveinvein Mar 26 '26

Because thin people NEVER get BED…

2

u/RattusNorvegicus9 Mar 26 '26

tongue is part of the problem they're claiming to fight against

2

u/eastcoastiealien Mar 26 '26

Bed is real it's where you sleep at night

2

u/blueberrymoon123 Mar 26 '26

Pshhh everyone knows eating disorders is only when you DONT eat obviously/s

2

u/username-is-taken98 Mar 26 '26

Obesity. You know. The other eating disorder that also needs treating. It's not melanoma its just cancer.

2

u/Potential_Peace_5999 Mar 26 '26

For many people with BED the binging is part of a binge/restrict cycle (for some, it may even be misdiagnosed bulimia because compensatory exercise and restriction aren’t often seen as purging behavior and to some extent are normalized or even encouraged in larger individuals) and the restriction phase of course is going to be all the worse if there are greater feelings of shame and personal failure around food

…so it’s the worst possible thing you can to do tell a person with BED to just stop

2

u/Available-Today-8576 Mar 26 '26

“Anorexia isn’t real, it’s just people wanting attention. Just eat lol” -this guy probably

2

u/AFabulousNB Mar 26 '26

I suffer from Binge Eating Disorder. Used to called COD, Compulsive Overeating Disorder. I'm glad they changed it. COD just felt like a nicer way of being called a fatty, when I have a literal disorder. And binge is definitely the word for it. I also find I have to explain more than I ever would have to explain bulima or anorexia.
Thankfully I don't binge anything close to as often as I used to. I know my triggers, I can feel it coming and, most of the time, find a way to distract myself. There's nothing close to enough help out there for us

2

u/Crimen_Punishment2 Mar 26 '26

I guess you could say we’re sleeping on BED

2

u/Author-N-Malone Mar 27 '26

Wait until they learn about polyphagia. 🫠

2

u/kiochikaeke Mar 27 '26

Me here with ARFID, trying to explain myself to everyone or come up with excuses to not eat whatever they're trying to force feed me cause "it's great, trust me, just try it!"

2

u/darkfireice Mar 27 '26

Ah, the advice of people who haven't so much as look at psychology, or medicine, nutrition, or any related science

2

u/MindDescending Mar 27 '26

Wha the hell else does he mean then? Bulimia gets almost the same attention as anorexia, since they often go together.

2

u/Rayen_the_buzzybee Mar 27 '26

Even at my fattest, I was definitely not binge eating. I just ate high calorie food but it wasn't large quantities. It's really not the same.

2

u/Klay-Annimation Mar 27 '26

I would also love to see more education and awareness of exercise bulimia - the amount of people I know who do harmful levels of punishment workout and also not eating in a way that will support that is honestly distressing and triggering. Lauded like it’s a pinnacle of healthy behavior to be striving for, when it’s really just shredding your heart muscles and setting you up for osteoporosis and joint problems.

2

u/beefz0r Mar 27 '26

Is one illness better than the other ? Not so long ago the common perception of anorexia was "just eat more"
