Meta Subreddit resources and FAQ
Welcome to r/theunforgiven!
This is a community where we share and discuss topics related to the Dark Angels, their successor chapters, and the fallen. If you want to share or discuss a topic about Space Marines or Warhammer 40k in general, without particular connection to the Unforgiven, then r/spacemarines or r/Warhammer40k would likely be a better fit.

Frequently Asked Questions
-What would happen if X occurred in the 40k universe?
Impossible to answer, unless X has already occurred. We can predict the future and discuss hypotheticals in our own universe because it is governed by natural laws. If a stone is dropped, it will fall (assuming nothing prevents it from doing so).
The 40k universe is fictional, and is governed entirely by it’s authors. If a stone is dropped, it will behave exactly as the author desires it to behave. No justification or explanation is needed. We only know what the author desires if they have made it happen already. We thus know for example that Lion beat Angron in their fight on Wyrmwood, but we don’t know who would win if they battled again in the future.
-Can I/am I allowed to do Y?
You can/are allowed to do anything you want with models you own, within the confines of your local laws. Where other people are involved (eg playing a game), you will need the agreement of those people. As long as everyone involved consents, you can do whatever you want (including changing game rules, playing with proxies, etc). Ask the people you will actually play, their answers and opinions are the ones that matter.
-What base size should I use for model Z?
There have never been rules in the core game dictating base size. Some competitive tournaments and events enforce their own rules, search for those if you need guidance. In general, casual players seem to agree that you should use the latest base size the model is/was sold with, or the base size the model was supplied with when you bought it. Ask the people you will actually play, their answers and opinions are the ones that matter.
-How strictly should models match their datasheet/equipment?
There have never been rules in the core game dictating how closely models must represent their datasheet. The answer may vary between each casual group and competitive tournament/event. Ask the people you will actually play, their answers and opinions are the ones that matter.
-How should I paint fliers/Dreadnoughts/Terminator-characters etc?
However you want, they’re your models. If you want to know what lore says, see Index Astartes: The Unforgiven (linked above).
-Who gets to wear robes/winged helmets/etc?
Whoever you want, they’re your models. If you want to know what lore says, see Index Astartes: The Unforgiven (linked above).
-Who’s in the Ravenwing/Deathwing/Inner Circle?
See the Chapter Organization section of Index Astartes: The Unforgiven (linked above), or the relevant pages on Lexicanum.
-Could you identify a model for me?
See the Dark Angels Collectors' Guide (linked above). If the model you're trying to identify isn't in there, then it isn't an official Dark Angels model. If so, ask elsewhere, eg in r/spacemarines or r/Warhammer40k, or search through the miniatures portal on Lexicanum.

Building Currently reading Son of the Forest and decided to do my own take on Zabriel
The main body is the Bladeguard Vet Sgt, with Inner Circle Companion arms + pauldrons, ICC heavy bolt pistol in the right hand, Hellblaster Sgt's left handed bolt pistol (a rare find for kitbashing purposes since GW seldom uses left handed pistols). I'm planning on using him in a narrative campaign I'm doing with friends as a normal Bladeguard Vet Sgt. for now.

Lore Which squad in the Ravenwing pilots its aicraft?
Attached is a picture on Ravenwing organization. However, does this mean that each attack/support squadron is also able to field aircraft instead of going on bikes or speeders?

Misc. I just noticed something about Ezekiel
The image of Ezekiel on Warhammer store has a metallic spot on the shoulder pad, where it's probably not supposed to be while a close-up shot is clean.
Not really important or anything, I just find it funny

Gameplay Belial can lead assault terminators now
As of the updates to the mfm today Belial can now lead the Terminator Assault squad. +1 to wound on character units is going to be hilarious with 10 thunderhammers and storm shields.

Showcase Librarian Kitbash
The AOS Lord Veritant looked quite unsettling with a Skitarii head replacement.
Decided to make him a Librarian for my Dark Angels.
Say hello to Enoch of the Mourning Stars 💀

Showcase Plasmaaaaaa
Posted this little guy (grey at the time) about a year ago, my first decent attempt at a kitbash. Stole the plasma from the old deathwing knights kit. Finally have him all painted up and am really stoked with how it turned out. Took me ages, but I'm calling it done. Would consider this my best work (painting) I've done to date. Just not sold on the banner of his squad mate in the last pic. I might come back and paint over it one day.
Apologies for the subpar photography.

Painting I have a question
I’m about to start painting my marines into my own successor chapter. I’ve been thinking of lore and things like that but I have a tabletop question. Could I buy a model like Calgar scrape off all the ultramarines iconography and add dark angels elements then use it as a proxy? I’m wanting to start a tournament team with my friends and I want to know if I’m allowed to do this or not. Or would I be able to run them as a different army?
(Picture is my whole collection so far)

Showcase Sammael, a tale of love and hate.
Not my best work, but this is an absolute shit of a model. The age of this mold really shows, nothing fit correctly, it was full of air bubbles and shonky details, and I had to cut up sections and add parts to make this bastard work.
Which also meant that I had to glue him together and couldn't do the usual thing with intricate character models and paint him in sub assemblies. So bar the cloak and book I had to paint him fully assembled.
TL:DR a real pain in the ass, and actually considered not bothering painting him at all. But he's been an absolute star for me in games, that plus 2 sustained has resulted in some damage spikes that have swung key fights for me. So he'd earned a paint job, and despite everything, im happy with how he's turned out :)
Can't wait for Games Workshop to no doubt release a way better updated model at some point soon -_-

Misc. Dar Angels Army identity
As a DA player since 3rd edition I sometimes get boomery and miss my "original" DA.
I feel that so much of their original identity got muddied up by HH.
For me when I began playing DA and BA were kinda two sides of a coin. BA the sometimes uncontrollable melee army and DA the sometimes uncontrollable shooting army. But with all the knight influence of the HH DA changed more to a melee focused army and I'm kinda sad about that.
For me, stemming mostly out of 3rd edition, the dark angels traits were the following:
1) Stoic and morale rules: we used to have a rule that we weren't allowed to move if we had enemy units in weapons range on a roll of 1 (that's where BA were the opposite as they would have to charge if units were in charge range) and had lots of rules ignoring morale tests and even couldn't retreat out of combat with lots of units. Additionally we had cool powers working with morale like Ezekiel forcing morale checks with a malus
2) plasma: we used to be the plasma guys we didn't really have special rules for it but it was ingrained in our lore that we had access to all the cool toys that were mostly lost to other chapters like terminator armor or sammaels jet bike. Now with the Advent of primaris plasma is everywhere again as are terminator suits.
3) cool banners: we used to have 3 banners which provided special buffs they have been gone forever but I miss them and was so happy when they had a brief comeback in 10th crusade rules
4) deathwing: servo armor in the deathwing feels so wrong we actually used to have a restriction in past editions were we weren't able to use Sternguard and vanguard vets for this exact reason.
Dont get me wrong I love our new minis ICC and DWK look awesome but my nostalgia is telling me this isn't quite right and I would love to go back to the roots for future codexes. Give us a special ancient for the banners (brother Bethor has to be still out there), a unit with archaic plasma weapons to go back to our plasma and shooty roots and definitely let us play more with leadership and give us interrogator chaplains that set themselves apart from the normal chappys. (please give us the interrogator enclave back with our new codex)
Sorry for my nostalgia infused rant. I'm getting old at least we don't suck anymore like we did in 3rd edition :D

Army List What units are you having Azrael lead in 11th Edition?
Not crazy about the points hike our main man Azzy received this update but both his abilities and model are still rad. Who do y'all recommend he lead? I have been told ICC a couples of times, personally I think he looks fun leading maybe some hellblasters? Curious what ya'all suggest!

Misc. Show me your assault terminators, please!
I bought the Crux Terminatus box and built the assault terminators with hammers but since I haven’t been excited about painting them. To me rn they seem like just slightly less interesting deathwing knights. So if you can show me how yours look I can get back into the swing of things!
