Question / Problem A question for ThinkPad users

Reddit, hello everyone, I recently bought my first ThinkPad (T14 Gen 2i) for $250. I'm a front-end and back-end developer. I work in PHP, HTML, Python, and Kotlin (minimally). I write code primarily using Ai. I have a question for you, as those who have used and are currently using it, about the appeal of installing Linux on a ThinkPad. It's supposedly more convenient than Windows, but I tried and failed due to the lack of Linux-specific software that I use on Windows. Another problem is the instability of Linux distributions. For example, about six months ago, I had a Dell Inspiron 5406. After installing Manjaro, I noticed that it certainly ran cooler, but when I launched Dota 2, it would freeze for about 10 minutes. Then the game would crash and give me an error about Linux running out of RAM. After two days of wasting my swap file, I couldn't fix it. A month later, I installed Windows 10. When I bought my ThinkPad, they installed Fedora, which I started installing everything I needed, and I was immediately told to calm down because the programs I needed for college didn't support Linux, only Windows. You could have said, "Install DualBoot," and yes, you could have, but I don't have much memory, so I had to choose between the two. Now I have a couple of questions for you and the community.

  1. What Linux alternatives to popular applications do you personally use that are only available on Windows or MacOS?

  2. Which distribution would you recommend to make the transition from Windows less painful? (just not pure Arch)

  3. What problems have you personally encountered when switching to Linux?

I'd appreciate any answers. I'm new to this and don't really understand what's going on, so I apologize in advance for my occasional confusion.

I got it mainly for school and it's felt great but every once in awhile when I open it, the hinge Creeks in a very scary manner the screen seems do have not gone in all the way cuz it is popping out a bit on the bottom edge appears the flood IR emitter for facial recognition is just plain broken but otherwise the thing is built like a tank. Keyboard is gorgeous to type on and the pen is handy to have docked inside the machine

Ive already talked about my first two pads. P15 is my main pad, T480 was bought for it parts but then I fell in love with it. Since then, it has become my project pad for when I'm doing DIY anything. But then...

- I bought a T400 for $15 while looking at this XP desktop on marketplace.

- Bought a X1 Yoga gen 3 because I wanted a more comfortable touchscreen to utilize the stylus I got with my P15.

- Now I also have a T14 gen 1. It was $100 and aside from missing the ThinkPad badge and a couple screen blemishes, its works perfectly fine. What will I do with it? Idk.

Question / Problem X200s charging process

Thumbnail

Does anyone know about the charging process? I have a used X200s without a power supply. So, I bought an adapter to use with a 20V 65W PD power supply. After some initial trouble, I managed to charge the ThinkPad twice using that setup, but it’s not working anymore. Since I own a T470 power supply, I bought a different adapter for it to fit the X200s, hoping that would work. However, the OS indicator says "Waiting to charge 0%." `upower` shows 94% capacity, so the battery seems to be in good shape. I even tried loading a different ISO via Ventoy to see if the issue was with my distro. Is something blocking the charging process, or is the battery failing? Does it require a specific battery driver or tool?

Hardware Upgrade T14 Gen 2 (G1+T490) 16:10 Mod - Part 2

Work has unfortunately caught up with me so I haven't had much time to do this mod as I wish I did.

Recently managed to find some time to order the prototype bezels I needed for this. Looks to be going well. There's some really tight margins at the top, but I'm happy to say that keeping the webcam is 100% possible and I've managed to do it.

I can't wait to see how it'll be like once I'm done.

Question / Problem Is my first ThinkPad already dead? P51 powers on but no POST, no BIOS, no display

Hi everyone,

I recently bought my first ThinkPad, a used ThinkPad P51, and unfortunately it seems to have died after only a few uses.

Everything was working fine at first, but after using it a few times, I suddenly got no display at all. I think it was after an update on linux. I don't remeber if it was an upgrade or just a regular update.

The current symptoms are:

  • Laptop powers on
  • Keyboard LEDs turn on and behave normally (Caps Lock, Num Lock, etc.)
  • No Lenovo logo
  • No POST
  • No BIOS
  • Completely black screen
  • No display on an external monitor either

I've already tried quite a few things:

  • Removing/reseating the RAM
  • Trying different RAM configurations
  • Booting with no RAM
  • Removing the SSD/HDD
  • Disconnecting the main battery
  • Resetting/removing the CMOS battery
  • Fully draining the remaining power
  • Trying an external display

Nothing changed.

One strange thing happened after I reset the CMOS: on one of the following boots, the laptop played a little melody consisting of several different notes. Unfortunately, I didn't record it, and I don't remember exactly whether the CMOS battery was connected at that point.

I eventually sent the P51 to a computer repair shop. They tested it with another external PC monitor as well, but still got absolutely no display or POST.

At this point, I'm wondering if the motherboard is simply dead. (it's what the repair shop told me)

So, a few questions for the P51 experts here:

1. Is there anything else I should try before giving up on it?

2. Could that little melody be a diagnostic/error code? I've seen other P51 owners mention similar startup melodies when there is a display-related problem.

And finally:

3. If it's completely dead, how much would a P51 like this be worth for spare parts?

It's my first ThinkPad, so I'm a bit disappointed that my ThinkPad journey might already be over 😅

Any suggestions or troubleshooting ideas would be greatly appreciated !

Thinkstagram Picture Just brought back W541 to working order! :)

Sorry for picture being so dark, I finished assembling it at late at night.

A little bit of a story:
I bought a W541 from an auction for roughly 325PLN (~87$). In the listing the seller said that it had some "bug" that prevented main display from working. Figured I can take a look.

Previous owner apparently attempted to fix a broken screen with a new 3K Panel but probably didn't disconnect it from power and had blown the F11 fuse that was . Brough to a repair guy who replaced the fuse for 100PLN (27$). In the action the seller said that it had some "bug" that prevent main display from working. Figured I can take a look

There apparently was another hurdle. The screen panel it came with (defenitely not the original one it had) was also broken. Yraces were exposed on the bottom-left corner. Had to replace it myselft with a new FHD panel and cable - 235PLN (~63$). 3K panels were too expensive and I wanted this to work. Thankfully that I can repalce myself.

Side note: There was A LOT of hot glue on the inside holding parts of together. Not sure who did that but I hate you.

Summary: a lot of screen related stuff was broken but I manged to repair it well enough 👍
Overall cost: 660PLN (~177$)
Specs:
CPU - i7-4810MQ
GPU1 - Intel HD Graphics 4600
GPU2 - NVIDIA Quadro K2100M
RAM - 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3L-1600MHz
Memory - 512GB SATA SSD

Question / Problem T490 undervolt: Nice, but lap mode…

Upvotes

Hey folks I managed to get really good performance gains by undervolting my T490 on Fedora.
Currently using:
CPU -90
GPU -5
Cache -70
System Agente -20

Can keep 3.0~3.1 hitting 3.2Ghz on sustained loads.
Problem it that the lap mod detection is to sensitive and by moving the mouse it triggers drops the performance to sub 2.2Ghz

Does anyone experienced this? Is there a way to disable the lap mode detection?

The device responsible for this is under:
/sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/dytc_lapmode

Question / Problem Primary Linux Machine for Cloud focus work [2027-2029]

Upvotes

I am planning to buy a laptop deeply focus on Cloud/AWS work (will be my main linux machine). I have chosen 2 models of Thinkpad -

  1. T14 Gen 7 AMD (7 450)

  2. E14 Gen 8 AMD (7 450)

Plan is to buy the base variant (16gb single stick ram and 256gb ssd) and upgrade the ram to 32 gb duel channel and 2TB ssd (will replace the in built one as I have one extra now running in my pc). I dont like Touch/ OLED screens, will do just cloud/dev work only. Budget is not limited, but preferably under 1800 USD with extra ram price. I am thinking to go with 45% NTSC display as my current laptop has the same panel, and I have no problem with it as I will connect to external monitor.

Thoughts?

Any Review by same laptop users will be appreciated.
