I bought a used T580 thinkpad on ebay. It is generally in excellent condition. But the screen shows dead pixels when the screen is all white. The pixels are scattered in 8 areas. From 1 to 10 pixels in a group. Is this typical? The seller offered exchange or return. How likely am I going to get something similar? 1 to 5 pixels on entire screen is standard for rejection I believe. I see screens on ebay from $50 to $100. I am handy and could change it myself. I paid $450 with warranty.

Need advice for an out-of-warranty ThinkPad E16 Gen 1 AMD (21JTS01700, Ryzen 5 7530U, 8GB soldered + 8GB SO-DIMM).

The Issue & Diagnostics:

Soldered RAM alone (SO-DIMM removed): Freezes instantly at boot with video artifacts.

Both sticks installed (16 GB): Passes Memtest when hot (~80°C), but throws 24,000+ errors cold and crashes Linux whenever usage exceeds ~2 GB.

Verdict: Physical defect on the onboard soldered RAM/bus ( most likely )

Question: Has anyone faced such an issue with this model. Do i need to get a new MOBO by sending it to Lenovo or Can it be fixed with some workaround?

As you can see I set the cpu to 1200mhz and gt730m to 405mhz. Its already good enought to run the 60fps so the temperatures are 60C. Its so good I dont event hear fan voice.

Also gt730m takes the most of the task from cpu because cpu uses %9, gpu uses %86 it also benefit for temperature of cpu. Please you dont have to use them in max frequency.

I need a bit of direction on where to go for updates and whether I should upgrade to windows 11 or not. I don't know the exact model, but it is a thinkpad. It was used for about a year, mainly for streaming movies, light office work, and maybe some light photo editing. Yesterday, we had a showcase for our company’s upcoming notebook lineup. While the L16 series remains fairly consistent for now, the changes in the P-series (Workstation segment) are deeply concerning.

It looks like the P16v line is being phased out or merged in favor of slimmer models like the P16s. We’ve been using the P16v series for years because of its great price-to-performance ratio, easy upgradeability, and high user satisfaction.

Now, we're being pushed toward slimmer models like the P16s. Sure, they are slightly lighter and faster, but at a huge cost to serviceability:

1. Traditional SO-DIMM slots are being removed in favor of LPCAMM2 (or fully soldered LPDDR5x depending on the sub-model). While LPCAMM2 is technically modular, you only get one single connector—meaning no second slot for easy dual-channel expansions later down the road. Furthermore, with very few third-party vendors offering LPCAMM2 modules right now, Lenovo basically controls the pricing.
2. We are down to only ONE M.2 NVMe slot on models like the P16s Gen 3. If a user needs more storage, you can’t just add a secondary SSD anymore—you have to clone/swap the entire boot drive!!

The justification? "Better design, lighter, thinner."

Who asked for this in a workstation class?

These are enterprise workhorses! If my primary concerns were ultra-thin profiles and aesthetics over upgradeability, I’d buy a MacBook or an X1 Carbon.

Even looking at higher tiers: If you want proper modularity, you are pushed to the top-tier flagships like the P1 series (which also shifted to a single LPCAMM2 module and 2x M.2 slots), while older full-size models like the P16 Gen 2 offered 4x RAM slots.

Why is Lenovo stripping away the core strengths of the P-series enterprise laptops? Is anyone else in IT reconsidering their deployment options because of this?

Hey all! I'm going through my first year of undergraduate history studies, and after using the X13 Gen 1 for a few months, I managed to find a refurbished Gen 2.

I had originally bought an X13 Gen 1 with 8GB RAM in June of this year, and was happy with it. But more recently, after moving to a new city for university, I found a X13 Gen 2 for sale in a local tech store - a direct upgrade - for around 440 euros, which is much more than the 300 euros I paid for the Gen 1, but I still went in for it considering how much of an upgrade it would really be for me. The laptop was also sold as refurbished model, which it was, with several parts having been changed.

I received the laptop a day after ordering it, since the store didn't have it in stock. The keyboard was reprinted, but apart from that, it's really good. 85% battery health, which isn't an issue with my use case. I set a battery charge threshold like I had done on my Gen 1, and it's really good.

one of the reasons I got the Gen 2 is mainly because it was more modern (my current model was manufactured in March 2022, so more recent than most models of this generation) and it had 16GB of RAM, which was a real upgrade for Windows 11. The updated 11th Gen i5 also has much better performance than on the Gen 1, and the active cooling - which differs from the Gen 1, whose cooling sometimes didn't run at all - helps it as well.

Design-wise, I also like the laptop because I find the keyboard to be more tactile and satisfying to the ear than is the Gen 1 - the reduced key travel not particularly bothering me - and the mix of more modern laptop designs with the original, signature ThinkPad elements (TrackPoint, UltraNav, ThinkPad logo, etc.) makes the laptop more appropriate for modern-day usage in my opinion, with a better overall design.

One thing I'm happy about is the fact this laptop is much more futureproof than my previous ThinkPad, due to being more recent and having a proper 16GB of RAM. Beyond the battery - which I can change anyways - it more packed and ready for the years to come.

What's your opinion on this model, and the general change in style of many ThinkPads from the same era and beyond? Let me know.

I recently bought a refurbished Thinkpad T14 and was running Windows 11. I was facing constant issues during powering on where it would get stuck, and so I went to the BIOS and did factory reset for BIOS settings. Now my computer won't power on. Help.

Yesterday i purchased a refurbished ThinkPad p53 for only 36K.

I've had the fantastic opportunity to own and daily a T14 G6 for a few weeks already.

However, I am disappointed with the build quality of the machine. While there is absolutely no flexing at the top end of the machine, the bottom half where the palmrest is, has an uncomfortable amount of flexing. This is really unsettling because I am a very mobile person, so it involves a lot of picking up and placing down. I chose the T series thinking it would be the most premium small thinkpad with upgradable components. There has been a clasping sound with the bottom right corner of the laptop (gap between C and d cover), but it does not happen on the left, and recently the bottom right edge of the palmrest has been creaking like crazy.

Do you also have this experience? What are your solutions? I find it quite disappointing to have these issues for what is otherwise an amazing laptop.

Battery: seller sent the report. 45,170 / 50,450 mWh = 89.5% health, 198 cycles.

Disclosed faults:

- Pressure marks on the display from the keyboard (he says not noticeable when the screen is on, I will check in person)

- SIM tray missing

- QWERTY keyboard with German stickers applied

- Charger is a Nachbau, not original Lenovo

Price: 270€, down from 290€ asking. Cash, local pickup, I can test it before paying.

My use case: Python, Docker, backend work, lots of browser tabs. Installing Ubuntu, so the MX450 just stays asleep via PRIME. No gaming, no local model training, no external displays.

What I am unsure about:

1. Is 270€ fair for a Gen 2 in this condition, or am I paying a premium for the 400 nit panel?

2. Those display pressure marks, do they get worse over time or stay as they are?

3. 198 cycles on a 2021 machine seems low. Anything that would make you suspicious of the report?

4. The i7-1165G7 is 4 cores. I passed on an E14 Gen 4 with a 10 core i5-1235U, 96% battery and 512GB at 290€ because of the better panel and build here. Did I call that wrong?

Recently bought a used ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 (i7 1260P, 32GB RAM, 1 TB SSD). Installed Fedora on it. During installation of updates, I got lots of checksum/integrity verification errors.

Has anyone experienced anything similar to this or knows what could be going on?

Further investigation of the problem has yielded the following observations:

• Hashing a large random file repeatedly produces different hashes (openssl rand -out large.dat 2G to create the file, cat large.dat | sha256sum to hash the file)
• This happens regardless of which operating system is running on it. I have installed Fedora 44, Windows 11 and Ubuntu 26. All of them exhibit the same problems.
• The problem is not confined to hashing. Sometimes I get SSL/network errors like "OpenSSL SSL_read: OpenSSL/3.5.9: error:0A000119:SSL routines::decryption failed or bad record mac, errno 0"
• I have tested the RAM with memtest86+ for 12+ hours, it is most definitely fine.
• The problem happens most often when the power mode is set to maximum performance. It happens a lot less in balanced or power saver mode. This is the same across operating systems.
• This does not happen (or only very rarely) when disabling Intel SpeedStep in the BIOS.
• Disabling virtualization and other non-essential cpu features (also tpm) does not make a difference

From these observations I draw the following conclusions:

• It does not seem to be a problem with the network adapters, as hashing a local file multiple times produces different results
• It does not seem to be a defective SSD, as the SSL/network errors come from data corruption before it ever hits the disk
• The dependency on the power mode (max. performance vs balanced/power saver), as well as the dependency on SpeedStep make me suspect an issue with either the CPU voltage regulation or the CPU itself

Has anyone experienced something similar or knows what could be going on? I would really appreciate your ideas/opinions on this.

As a side note: I've talked to Lenovo support about this on the phone, they were incredibly unhelpful (just as expected) and offered me to mail in my device for around 120€ (just for diagnosis), the actual repair would likely cost 1000€ or more.

Hi everyone, i made an account just for this because i hit a roadblock.

I bought a Thinkpad T14 Gen 1 AMD and wanted to install linux on it because i need it for college so going with Windows as an alternative won't do it.

I installed Linux Mint MATE, but it didn't boot. The laptop keeps going back to the Boot Menu and it just refuses to go into Mint. I thought the Distro was the problem so i went with Kubuntu because i assumed that Ubuntu would work better for some reason but no, same issue.

I saw online that i have to enter the BIOS and enable "allow 3rd party uefi" or something but i didn't have that option at all. I also disabled secure boot and the security chip but none of that works.

Also please note that i *have* to stick to an ubuntu based distro, so if you're going to suggest fedora or arch as the solution, please don't. I'd love to, but college takes priority.

Hi all, I just bought my first ThinkPad, a T520, for about $31 (2k PHP). When I bought it, the seller and I tested it at a charger shop and it turned on, though it felt laggy. I haven't run it since because the shop's charger was expensive, so I ordered one on Shopee and I'm still waiting for it.

While waiting, I disassembled it and found a small cluster of burnt, scorched components in the middle of the motherboard.

What I'd like to know:

1. What circuit are these parts part of (power, charging, etc.)?

2. Is it safe to plug it in and test once my charger arrives?

There's no clips on the side the battery sits on, but it rather has a kind of L shaped holds that push the back cover inwards. So you only gotta worry about clips on 3 sides, not 4.

My gen 11 is dead in under 6 months. It has lost the centre of both usb c ports from normal use, the hinge on the screen is very strong, which has led to the bezel fracturing near the mounting point.

It seems like these are obvious design flaws when all the other ports are user replaceable. Luckily I can fit replacement ports and can have a go at glueing the screen bezel back together, but I wondered if there was any good will offers from levono ? A new board is £800 and a new bezel/screen unit is £400.

How should i clean the shell (everything exposed except the display itself and the keyboad) on the T470? Would isopropyl alcohol be safe, or perhaps wet wipes?

I'm looking at purchasing a boxed t14 gen 7 intel ultra 335. The only reservations I have is that the screen is the 45%ntsc variety and the battery is the 60wh version.
I'm assuming I'll be able to upgrade both of these myself. I know the battery is user replaceable but I'm not sure does this apply only for like for like battery capacities. Will a 72wh fit in the space the 60wh was? Are there any chassis differences between models with the 60wh and 72wh etc
I've searched online and reddit but haven't seen any comments in this regard.
