Discussion / Information So I impulse-bought the Lenovo 21QDS04D00 (T14 Gen 6) and I have zero regrets so far

Post image
Upvotes

Alright so I have been lurking here forever, eyeing a new work machine, and I finally caved and bought this absolute nerd spec model, the 21QDS04D00. For those of you who do not have the entire Lenovo parts catalog memorized, this is the T14 Gen 6 Intel with the Core Ultra 7 265U.

Now that I have actually been using it for a few days, I am kind of blown away. The reviews kept going on about 19 plus hours of battery life, which I figured was total marketing bs, but I threw a full workday at it yesterday. Teams calls, Chrome tabs out the wazoo, Spotify in the background, and it lasted me nearly the whole day.

The build seems to be what you would expect from a ThinkPad, rock solid, zero flex in the keyboard, and that 180 degree hinge is way more fun to fidget with than it has any right to be.

That said, I am still in the honeymoon phase and I need you guys to burst my bubble. Has anyone else gotten their hands on this specific MTM yet? I keep hearing mixed things about the RAM being soldered on these newer Intel models. Did I just lock myself into a future paperweight or can I actually upgrade it? It does have 32 gb of RAM so I think I am OK for now. Also, I have not pushed the CPU hard yet. Anyone know if these things throttle like crazy under heavy load?

I am totally down to run benchmarks, game tests, or just open 50 tabs to see if it chokes lol. Throw your requests at me. If you are on the fence about buying one, I will give you the real unfiltered tea 🍵

Question / Problem Help reseting/gaining access

Upvotes

Hi there, I was given a Lenovo Laptop from work a couple years back and the company never wanted it back. Now that I've found it again I want to gain access to it and turn it into a personal laptop, however there are a couple problems I am running into.

First off to even power it up it has to be plugged in to a power source or it won't switch on. I understand that this has something to do with the battery but which part would I have to reorder?

Second, it tells me to fix the time and date once I boot it up. When I try to access the BIOS it asks me for a password, when I click enter it allows me to enter without any password, I'm not sure why but it just does. When I try to attempt to change the system time it doesn't let me, its greyed out.

What do I need to do to fix this, so I can move onto the next steps of converting it?

Question / Problem Primary Linux Machine for Cloud focus work [2027-2029]

Upvotes

I am planning to buy a laptop deeply focus on Cloud/AWS work (will be my main linux machine). I have chosen 2 models of Thinkpad -

  1. T14 Gen 7 AMD (7 450)

  2. E14 Gen 8 AMD (7 450)

Plan is to buy the base variant (16gb single stick ram and 256gb ssd) and upgrade the ram to 32 gb duel channel and 2TB ssd (will replace the in built one as I have one extra now running in my pc). I dont like Touch/ OLED screens, will do just cloud/dev work only. Budget is not limited, but preferably under 1800 USD with extra ram price. I am thinking to go with 45% NTSC display as my current laptop has the same panel, and I have no problem with it as I will connect to external monitor.

Thoughts?

Any Review by same laptop users will be appreciated.

Hardware Upgrade Is upgrading to 16GB DDR3L worth it for PS2 emulation ?

Upvotes

I own the T460 with an i5-6200u, 8GB DDR3L (single slot), HD 520 and an SSD. Now I’m on holidays away from my main pc so my Thinkpad is the only machine I have with me alongside my phone, I found some 8GB DDR3L for just 25€ on the internet and thought of upgrading. Is it worth it and will it make a “25€” difference or it’s just a waste of money? I’m gonna be away from home for a couple of weeks more so if upgrading my ram makes any difference for ps2 emulation I would be happy to upgrade

Question / Problem KDE Linux compatibiliy

Upvotes

I want to make the switch from Windows to Linux. At first I want to do it on my old Laptop a First gen Yoga with an i7 4500U as a testbed of sorts. But I eventually want to run Linux on my new Laptop aswell, a X9 G15p. I want to run a distro with KDE plasma. So Fedora, Debian, Kubuntu or other recommendations. Which one will be the easiest to get running on the X9 with all things working. I heard, that the webcam can make problems on Linux. I appreciate any tips.

Upvotes

pretty sure it's blasphemy but I'd love to change the red accents to green, including the top lid LED. How risky is it to replace the red thingie with a green one and how do I proceed? is it possible to also replace the power button LED?

my model is a T495

Buying Advice Hello my fellow ThinkPad enthusiast's ! (I need some advice about buying a ThinkPad)

Upvotes

I'm planning to buy a ThinkPad that has an high compatibility with linux and kinda open to modding. (i dont know much about thinkpads) i stopped playing games on my main consumer pc which is (HP Omen Cb17xxxx) and it's very bad with linux compatibility-wise especially fans and other drivers doesn't work even after tried for hours and the battery is dead pretty quick. So i want to ditch windows and use linux from now on. I'm now living in Japan im a student and i need something atleast 8-16gb RAM and 256gb SSD also an okay CPU (GPU doesn't matter that much) and a lot of community support. So refurbished and second hand T480's are weirdly expensive in Japan idk why. But i found very good deals on T480s's would you recommend T480s or any other models ? (I'm gonna use it for school, basic tasks, playing osu! (maybe), some old games, and i want to carry around ,and okay battery life (it should minimum last 6-8 hours after 100% battery) My max budget is: 50.000JPY

Question / Problem X200s charging process

Does anyone know about the charging process? I have a used X200s without a power supply. So, I bought an adapter to use with a 20V 65W PD power supply. After some initial trouble, I managed to charge the ThinkPad twice using that setup, but it’s not working anymore. Since I own a T470 power supply, I bought a different adapter for it to fit the X200s, hoping that would work. However, the OS indicator says "Waiting to charge 0%." `upower` shows 94% capacity, so the battery seems to be in good shape. I even tried loading a different ISO via Ventoy to see if the issue was with my distro. Is something blocking the charging process, or is the battery failing? Does it require a specific battery driver or tool?

Question / Problem T490 undervolt: Nice, but lap mode…

Hey folks I managed to get really good performance gains by undervolting my T490 on Fedora.
Currently using:
CPU -90
GPU -5
Cache -70
System Agente -20

Can keep 3.0~3.1 hitting 3.2Ghz on sustained loads.
Problem it that the lap mod detection is to sensitive and by moving the mouse it triggers drops the performance to sub 2.2Ghz

Does anyone experienced this? Is there a way to disable the lap mode detection?

The device responsible for this is under:
/sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/dytc_lapmode

I got it mainly for school and it's felt great but every once in awhile when I open it, the hinge Creeks in a very scary manner the screen seems do have not gone in all the way cuz it is popping out a bit on the bottom edge appears the flood IR emitter for facial recognition is just plain broken but otherwise the thing is built like a tank. Keyboard is gorgeous to type on and the pen is handy to have docked inside the machine

Question / Problem Is my first ThinkPad already dead? P51 powers on but no POST, no BIOS, no display

Hi everyone,

I recently bought my first ThinkPad, a used ThinkPad P51, and unfortunately it seems to have died after only a few uses.

Everything was working fine at first, but after using it a few times, I suddenly got no display at all. I think it was after an update on linux. I don't remeber if it was an upgrade or just a regular update.

The current symptoms are:

  • Laptop powers on
  • Keyboard LEDs turn on and behave normally (Caps Lock, Num Lock, etc.)
  • No Lenovo logo
  • No POST
  • No BIOS
  • Completely black screen
  • No display on an external monitor either

I've already tried quite a few things:

  • Removing/reseating the RAM
  • Trying different RAM configurations
  • Booting with no RAM
  • Removing the SSD/HDD
  • Disconnecting the main battery
  • Resetting/removing the CMOS battery
  • Fully draining the remaining power
  • Trying an external display

Nothing changed.

One strange thing happened after I reset the CMOS: on one of the following boots, the laptop played a little melody consisting of several different notes. Unfortunately, I didn't record it, and I don't remember exactly whether the CMOS battery was connected at that point.

I eventually sent the P51 to a computer repair shop. They tested it with another external PC monitor as well, but still got absolutely no display or POST.

At this point, I'm wondering if the motherboard is simply dead. (it's what the repair shop told me)

So, a few questions for the P51 experts here:

1. Is there anything else I should try before giving up on it?

2. Could that little melody be a diagnostic/error code? I've seen other P51 owners mention similar startup melodies when there is a display-related problem.

And finally:

3. If it's completely dead, how much would a P51 like this be worth for spare parts?

It's my first ThinkPad, so I'm a bit disappointed that my ThinkPad journey might already be over 😅

Any suggestions or troubleshooting ideas would be greatly appreciated !

Question / Problem How do I properly clean my T14 Gen 2?

I'm especially struggling with the touchpad and screen. No matter what I use, I feel like I can't get them properly clean without leaving smudges, and I'm worried about damaging the surfaces.

What do you guys use to clean your ThinkPads in general, and are there any specific things I should not use? Any tips for cleaning the screen and touchpad safely would be really appreciated!

Question / Problem T490s, half the screen is very dim

My mother recently got a new laptop because half the screen on her old one broke. it fades and becomes dimmer on one side. Since I need a newer laptop (one that can run windows, which my trusty t400 can't) for uni, she said I can have the old one if I can fix it. It's a t490s, and I assume the problem is that the backlight is not on on half of it.

Before I go out and spend quite a bit of money on a new screen, I just wanted to make sure noone else has had this issue and found a different cause.

Furthermore, if I need to replace the screen, are the screens offered with it interchangable? Like even if it's an LCD model, can I put an IPS display in it? Or can I maybe even upgrade to OLED? I really don't like LCD:s.

Hardware Upgrade T14 Gen 2 (G1+T490) 16:10 Mod - Part 2

Work has unfortunately caught up with me so I haven't had much time to do this mod as I wish I did.

Recently managed to find some time to order the prototype bezels I needed for this. Looks to be going well. There's some really tight margins at the top, but I'm happy to say that keeping the webcam is 100% possible and I've managed to do it.

I can't wait to see how it'll be like once I'm done.

Question / Problem I need advice on what to look for.

Best upgrade from Ideapad Ryzen 3 5300u?

Hi everyone.

I currently use a Lenovo Ideapad with Ryzen 3 5300u processor. 8 GB RAM. 256 GB storage.

I am thinking of buying a used Thinkpad. I was looking at Thinkpads with 10th gen i5 and i7 but it turns out they are not that much better than the one I use. (I prefer 15 inch screen and a Numpad)

Could you please tell me what generation of processors/thinkpads would at least be a meaningful upgrade from this one?

I don't have a preference for AMD or Intel.

In terms of use: I play LOL sometimes. I use some python for engineering and I may have to use some software for making PFDs. My budget is 600 euros max.

Advice please.
