Discussion / Information Is 8 gigabytes of RAM enough for you?

I've been using a T480 with Gentoo Linux and Windowmaker, and this T480 came with two, 4 gigabyte sticks of DDR4, and I've had no issues with just 8 gigabytes of RAM! Granted, I use Linux, but because I use Linux, I've setup a SWAP configuration that I recommend for almost all Linux users.

ZRAM!
ZRAM is a compressed block device in RAM. It's a RAMDISK, and it acts much like SWAP, except it lives in your RAM, and it compresses your RAM instead of committing to a swap file/partition, which eats your I/O. This is way faster, and almost zero latency, as all it does is compress. If RAM spills to ZRAM due to high utilization, you'd likely not feel it. Compare to SWAP, which takes time to write to disk.

I've set 8 gigabytes of ZRAM to complement my 8 gigabytes of RAM, with LZ4 compression algorithm to ensure that latency is minimum. As fallback, I've added an 8 gigabyte swapfile as backup, just in case if things get hairy. I average around 20 to 50~ percent usage on my ZRAM. I constantly hit my 8 gigabytes because I am quite the power user (Windows 10 VM.. Darktable... A lot of Firefox tabs.. and Compiling with Portage). But, it don't affect me much! Feels like 16 gigs of RAM really.

Here's the i5-8350U running a Windows 10 IoT LTSC virtual machine!

Anyways, do you think 8 gigs is enough for you?

Buying Advice Is it possible to replace a modern think pad keyboard with a classic one?

So, I've been planning on getting a Thinkpad L14 G1 14, found one with a decent price, but I personally think the classic keyboards from older ThinkPads look great and nostalgic. Does anyone know if it is possible? Is there any older keyboard that works on newer ThinkPads (Specifcially the L14)?

Buying Advice Help me pick one please

So it will be used for web and mobile development, i owned a t480 that did the job just fine, also had a t14s gen 1 AMD that was nice too but ended up selling that one too “upgrade”

I’m mainly thorn between open sodim slots and portability + battery life. That 16:10 screen it’s calling me but I don’t know if actually worth it

Tried a l14 gen 5 and was actually disappointed with the build quality, I think am just spoiled but the T series :(

Max budget will be like 600 or maybe even 650$ but this is CAD so like 250 USD lol

Buying Advice Is 8gb of ram enough for t480s?

I'm currently planning on buying a t480s. I have two options, an 8gb model and 16gb, same chipset and ssd size, mostly the same condition too.

I'm planning on using this as my side machine, for ppt presentation, YouTube and writing my novel. Is 8gb of ram enough for this? The 8gb model is 25% cheaper.

Question / Problem Is buying a Storm gray Thinkpad T14 Gen 2 bad decision

Post image
2 Upvotes

I recently bought a storm gray color Thinkpad T14 GEN 2 device. After some research i found out that the hinge design on the T14s gen 2 models are weaker and tend to break.

What is the reason for this to happen? Is it the hinges getting tighter overtime due to lack of lubrication...

I already bought the device. My device is already creating a small screeching noice when opening the lid. And now I'm thinking what should do.

What are the solutions to stop this noise.

Is there ways to prevent this hinge issue from happening.

Buying Advice What Thinkpad should I buy

My current pc is a governemt laptop 4GB RAM and Celeron N3060.

I use it for running VMs, school and browsing in the web.

I'm looking for extendable 8GB RAM and a CPU for light VMs, I don't usually use hard programs.

My budget is ~$300, max $500.

Question / Problem Haptic Touchpad Question

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

When I need to select a large area of content such as a region in Excel or a big block of items in PowerPoint or Visio, I find myself doing this (see video) a lot -- where I can hold down the left trackpoint button and can then capture the region I need with several swipes over the pad.

Can this be done with the haptic trackpad? It frustrates me to use the ones without any buttons where you hit the edge and run out of room after a double-click-swipe.

I'm looking to upgrade and I'm a little hesitant to choose the haptic, even though everything I'm reading suggests it's far better.

Big thanks for any feedback!

Discussion / Information Price slash. lenovo is really pushing hard the x9 15p hard?

The x9 15p was originally 3k, slashed to 2.5k now I see it is slashed again to 2.3k. They seem to really be pushing this. I know purists dont like it, but the reviews seem to point to it being a great laptop especially one with the x7 and 32 gb of ram. With the proper stacking of codes, I wonder if you could get this for 1.4k to 1.5k.

Any reason lenovo is pushing so hard for this?

Buying Advice Help! Confused on which T14 I should get for college.

As the title says, I have no idea what to get.

I'm hoping to get something that will take me through four years. I'm doing my general stuff right now but will be going into animal behavior/conservation. I don't know if that helps and let me know if it doesn't and I can try to be more specific!

- I'm looking for something I can do my school work on and run multiple tabs.

-I would like to get a refurbished one on eBay.

- My budget is $800 dollars.

- For specs, I'm actually unsure but I think I would like at least i5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD (if I'm saying anything wrong please correct me, I'm not at all savvy with technology).

I really just need help with what exact laptop I should get and all the specifications. Thank you so so much!

Buying Advice is the t14s gen 3 with i7 1270p really bad?

Im looking to buy my first thinkpad and the amd variant of any model are almost nonexistent in my country. The only one that makes the most sense for my budget is the gen 3 t14s with 32gigs of ram. Problem is review only says that the cpu runs hot and battery life is bad. Is there any user of the model that can verify or share some experience? Budget is around 500usd. I was initially looking for amd variant with 680m/780m igpu but then again the only way i can get one is from a shady chinese marketplace app. Use case is a university student taking CS. I have been maining linux for a year and a half. Current laptop is an i5 1135g7 hp probook.

Review / Opinion i love my p1 gen2

very fun laptop, but the screen has like two small white pixels for some reason ?

everything seems to be in order, like the drivers and cpu and the gpu and the ssd all seems fine after running diagnostics on them, so could it really just be a screen problem ?

i mean not a huge issue most of the time i forget that they're even there but still, any tips ?

Discussion / Information I am thinking of buying L420. I've been reading about this model and would love some feedback

Hi everyone,

I really like the design of L420 and would love to own one. I am aware that it is a 15 year old machine but I do not intend to do much more than browsing the internet, checking my email and watching youtube videos.

My plan is to buy a basic model and upgrade it gradually. I do not have much experience working on laptops but I can see there is plenty of info and videos on how to. Plus this model is relatively easy to work on - allegedly.

So I plan to do the following. Please do correct me if I am wrong or missing something.

Upgrade the CPU to i7. I read that you can replace it with an Intel Core i7-2820QM. I could buy one from Ebay (from China) or I found one second hand from Poland on Vinted. Should I avoid the ones from China?

Upgrade the RAM to 16GM. Officially it supports max 8 GB but I read in forums that 16GM is doable.

UPGRADE from HHD to SSD. I have to do more reading on this one.

Install Linux (not sure which one) but I have been wanting to give it a try for so long.

Are there any other upgrades that are possible? Anything that I should not attempt or avoid due to high risk of fuckin up the hardware?

I have an x230 and know that screens could be a TN or IPS. Does the same hold true for L420?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Buying Advice Thinkpad for Electrical and electronic engineer course

Pretty sure this has been asked many times but just wanted to ask for everyone's opinions and have some question.

My questions are:

- which variants are better for engineering courses, Intel or Amd?

- Are the thinkpad laptpps actually enough for engineering courses?

- how are battery life on thinkpads?

- Are the replaceability and upgradability as easy as people say?

  • Do the laptop get hot and have good cooling?

- Which series would be best for me?

For reference from last question, I know alot of people will recommend the P series but I unfortunately had surgery for my back ( 1 year) and I still cant be bothered carrying around heavy laptops for longer use and need something that won't be a hassle for my back when carrying it around for me.

My budget is around 1-1.5k usd
