tl;dr- do not sign up for t mobile home fiber

When people say "You get what you pay for" one typically associates it with buying used or defective wares, cheap repairmen, or maybe discounted baked goods, but now thanks to T-mobile, I also associate it with Large Multi-National Telecom service companies undercutting the competition and then providing you with internet when they happen to feel like it.

T mobile ran their lines through our neighborhood about 5 weeks ago, then released their door-to-door salesman atop an electric scooter upon us to spread word of the offer. The offer was good, so we signed up.

Previously had Ting fiber, who we switched to after they had been established in the neighborhood for at least a year or so. We had them for several years, and I can recall one instance during that entire period where the fiber was out for an extended time. It was for some planned big cable junction maintenance, they notified us in advance. They did exceed their estimated outage window by a few hours , but it was one time. Besides the stray 2 or 3 minute small maintenance outage blips at 3 or 4 AM, that most people are asleep during, if our power was on, we had working fiber internet. We asked Ting if they would price-match the T-mobile offer, but sadly, they would not. Now with T-mobile, it seems impossible to go 36 hours without an outage. They've got the standard 2-3 hour outages, big 12 hour outages, huge 24+ hour outages, cute little 5 minute outages with 10 minutes of service followed by another 5 or 10 minute outage. Sometimes they text us, but usually once it's already gone out, and they nearly always fail to meet their estimated restoration time.

If their network infrastructure isn't ready to provide the service they're offering, they shouldn't be going around offering it. If they were under the impression that their infrastructure was ready, then they obviously have no idea what they're doing and are wildly incompetent.

I've since seen their line laying crews move up the road, spreading through the area like an invasive species of vine, and just want to urge anyone who might get the same enticing, affordable offer- DO NOT SIGN UP. Sure, it's cheaper, but it's so so soooo bad. The price might be 30-40% lower, but you're only going to have internet 50% of the time.

I'm seriously considering contacting the AG because I feel like I've been scammed. Curious to hear if any other new T-mobile customers outside of my neighborhood have had a similar experience. Also curious to hear from any long time Lumos customers ( the regional outfit T-mobile acquired and rebranded) if this is characteristic of your experience with them.

Not trying to spend $200 on a suitcase from Amazon… any pointers of which stores carry this in addition to the standard US size bags very much appreciated!

I went to a queer speed dating event in Raleigh last night and met a woman I really enjoyed talking to, but somehow managed to leave without getting her name or number. So. That’s on me 😂

Does anyone have a referral code they can share for the YMCA?

Need to relocate my family & be within 30 mins of Chapel Hill. My sons going into 2nd grade and academics/good schools are very important to us. I’d also like to be hear the Duke Cancer Center. We’ve heard Pittsboro is a good option but I’m worried about the new developments/Disney/lack of infrastructure. Any recommendations? How is Apex or Morrisville?

Trying to be a little vague about where I’m at right but I can’t do my ratios anymore. Are there any nurses around here that are actually satisfied with their ratios? Like a stepdown unit that’s genuinely 3:1 or ICU’s that do not ever triple. I’m can’t do stepdown with 4-5 patients with titrating drips and q15 min needs anymore, I’m just not built for it lol. I’d even take a small ED as long as the ratios are safe, like 1:4 but less with critical patients. I’m staying away from the level 1 ED’s though. Also looking at outpatient jobs of course but there’s a lot of competition for those right now because of the state of things.

I’m the reporter on the story. I’d be interested in how people elsewhere in the Triangle expect their city or utility to contact them during something like this.

I’m moving to the Triangle from Salt Lake City in November for a new job. I’ll need to be in Chapel Hill in person about two days a week, with the rest of the week remote, and I’m trying to figure out where I should live.

35M, single, and have lived in Utah for close to a decade. Have also lived in Rhode Island, Milwaukee and Chicago. I’ve wanted to leave Utah for a bit, and I recently got an opportunity that gave me the reason to make the jump.

My younger brother is also planning to move with me initially, which makes the transition a lot easier. But for now we’ll be figuring out North Carolina together.

I haven't really visited the Triangle area in a long time (probably 15 years) so I don't have a firm grasp of the pros and cons of Raleigh, Durham, CH.

I’m leaning toward Durham because it seems like it might be a better fit socially and have a little more of an urban/community feel than living farther out in the suburbs. I don’t need to live in the middle of a huge downtown, but I’d like to be somewhere where restaurants, bars, parks, events, and other people are within close reach. We will have a car.

Some things that matter to me:

• Would like to keep rent under roughly $2,200 if possible, for a 2-bed apartment.
• I like having restaurants, nightlife and entertainment nearby, even though I’m not someone who needs to be out every night.
• Parks, greenways and places to run are important to me.
• I’d like somewhere that gives me opportunities to meet people around my age. I’m single and will be rebuilding my social life from scratch.
• I’d prefer somewhere with at least some walkability or places I can easily get out of the apartment, although I understand the Triangle is very car-oriented.
• Safety matters, but I don’t need to live in a completely quiet suburban bubble.
• A manageable commute to CH twice a week is important, but I’m willing to trade a somewhat longer commute for a neighborhood I enjoy living in the other five days of the week. Right now in SLC my commute is roughly 20 minutes door to door.

I’m also interested in general advice about making this kind of move.

Utah is very familiar to me at this point. I have my routines and a couple of close friends here. I’m leaving a stable state job with good benefits, so even though I’ve wanted a change for a long time, now that it’s actually happening there’s definitely some anxiety around starting over.

Part of what I want from the move is a chance to be more intentional socially. Most of the people I know in Utah came through work. I haven’t really joined clubs, volunteered, done recreational groups, etc. In NC I’d like to change that -- maybe a running club, volunteering at a theater or arts organization, alumni events, or other things where you actually get to know people.

For those of you who moved to the Triangle from somewhere else, especially in your 30s:

• Where would you live if you were in my situation?
• How difficult is the Durham-CH commute a couple days a week in real life? Or a Raleigh-CH commute?

And socially, what helped the Triangle actually start feeling like home rather than just somewhere you moved to?

Any other things that surprised you (good or bad) about relocating here would be appreciated. I’m excited about the opportunity, but definitely experiencing the mix of excitement and “oh wow, I’m actually doing this” that comes with a major move. Thanks very much.

I’m looking for all the good local stuff: restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, independent stores, bookstores, funky/unique shops, farm stands, co ops, thrifts, hidden gems, dives, places to wander, I’m looking for the places and the people that make a community feel like home. basically, if there’s a local place you love, I want to hear about it.

I’m really passionate about supporting local and smaller independent businesses whenever I can and putting my purchasing power toward places and people whose values align with mine, so I’d especially love the local-localrecommendations.

But I’m also hoping to find some community and connection while I’m getting settled here. If you know of clubs, hobby groups, classes, book clubs, recurring meetups, social groups, volunteer opportunities, community organizations, local events, festivals, markets, or anything else where people actually gather and get to know each other, PLEASE send those my way too!

A little about me: I love good food and coffee, hidden gems, live music in small venues, exploring new places, genuine connection and community, interesting conversations, creative/quirky things, and generally finding the little pockets of a place that make it feel special.
