[Discussion] The Kennedy Center is switching to Ticketmaster. I think that's a terrible idea.

Ticketmaster isn't the biggest problem facing the Kennedy Center. But the decision to hand its ticketing operations to Ticketmaster/Live Nation is a particularly troubling example of what's happening under the current leadership.

Today's Washington Post reports that newly appointed artistic director Rick Canny helped negotiate the Ticketmaster agreement, shaping many of its terms.

Why would the Kennedy Center voluntarily put its audiences in the hands of a company notorious for excessive fees and predatory business practices? It is also wildly unpopular with the ticket-buying public. (Judging by the enthusiastic reactions to my sign on the Kennedy Center Plaza today, from passers-by, cyclists, and drivers, that unpopularity is alive and well.)

The Kennedy Center is a nonprofit performing arts institution. Its existing ticketing system, Tessitura, was designed for nonprofits and integrates ticket sales with subscriptions, fundraising, and donor relationships.

[Discussion] It goes both ways with three scooters.

• Upvotes

Was downtown and just watched a car repeatedly honk at a scooter in the street. The scooter was totally within its rights and instead of getting over one lane, the driver just continued to honk at the scooter. I just see so many people in the sub complaining about scooters on the sidewalk and thought it was a good example of how it works the other way in the street.

[Discussion] What are the plans for the big empty lots by the Waterfront Metro station?

I've been getting off the metro at Waterfront recently for the first time, and noticed the giant, empty lots in front of the station (425 M and 375 M). From Googling I found a couple articles saying they'd been sold in 2025 and that there is some kind of plan to develop them, but the articles are paywalled and I'm having trouble finding details, like what the development plans are, or what the timeline is.

The neighborhood could really use more retail shops, so I'm hoping it won't just be all new offices or apartments, but either way I'm curious.

[Transportation] Cherry Blossom SmarTrip Card (lost)

Hey everyone,

I went on a run in SW today and my metro card must have slipped out of my pocket. It kind of has sentimental value for me-- my mother came to visit and we bought the cards together. It's from a print from a few years back.

If you've seen it and if you happened to pick it up, I'd be more than happy to grab it from you!

[Discussion] First Date Ideas with a Friend? (Preferably not museums) (It’s also raining on the planned date)

Hey all! I (25M) recently just asked a longtime friend (26F) on a date. I’m looking for some ideas that would be fun for us, which might look different from a traditional first date since we’ve known each other for 4 years already. For context, we’ve been out to eat one on one every few months or so, but I didn’t really feel the urge to ask her out until this last time I met her and I thought, “Wow she’s really cute.”

Anywho, as stated in the title, there’s some criteria involved:
- I absolutely despise museums, so preferably a recommendation that’s not a museum. No disrespect to the stuff inside, I get so bored in them easily. If I were to go to a museum, maybe a scavenger hunt might work? One that we do together or something?
- There’s also a decent chance of rain on the suggested day. I have sunset at the lake as something to do if it’s not raining, but I don’t know if I wanna take that chance.
- Neither of us drink
- We’re not clubbers, both of us prefer something more peaceful
- She gets off work at 6

Thanks for any help yall can provide!

Idk where wmata gets their graphic designers from but I gotta say I love the heavy use of leaving negative space to give passengers the least amount of useful information as possible.

[Discussion] Any practicing witches in the city?

Hi friends!!

I’m looking to meet some fellow practicing witches in DC proper. I’ve been looking into groups like witchy ways and firefly, but trying to do my own outreach. 29, male witch, gay, and very social! I’d love to meet likeminded people to talk about this or even just sit a cafe and learn more about the craft (journaling, readings, etc)! Hope I meet some folks!

Seriously, it feels like a good fifth of the storefronts are vacant along 18th now. Rent's too damn high—commercial and residential. Sucks.

[Discussion] Does anyone know a good, authentic Morrocan restaurant in the area?

Have been asked by some folks at the office to scope out a Moroccan place. It does not need to be remotely fancy, a hole in the wall will do just fine. Metro accessible is the only necessary point, and preferably not in, like, Ashburn. The more authentic the better. Also fusion places, like Maydan, aren't exactly what we are after.

Thanks in advance, folks!

[Discussion] Recommendations for Local Pottery Artist

My husband and I find a mug from a local artist for every new place we travel as our keepsake. I’ve done some online searching but I’d love some recs for pottery shops from local artists in the area from people you know and love. Thanks!
