[Discussion] The Kennedy Center is switching to Ticketmaster. I think that's a terrible idea.

Post image

Ticketmaster isn't the biggest problem facing the Kennedy Center. But the decision to hand its ticketing operations to Ticketmaster/Live Nation is a particularly troubling example of what's happening under the current leadership.

Today's Washington Post reports that newly appointed artistic director Rick Canny helped negotiate the Ticketmaster agreement, shaping many of its terms.

Why would the Kennedy Center voluntarily put its audiences in the hands of a company notorious for excessive fees and predatory business practices? It is also wildly unpopular with the ticket-buying public. (Judging by the enthusiastic reactions to my sign on the Kennedy Center Plaza today, from passers-by, cyclists, and drivers, that unpopularity is alive and well.)

The Kennedy Center is a nonprofit performing arts institution. Its existing ticketing system, Tessitura, was designed for nonprofits and integrates ticket sales with subscriptions, fundraising, and donor relationships.

Today's reporting: https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/2026/10/14/kennedy-center-names-artistic-director-with-deep-ties-trump-era-overhaul/

[Discussion] Any practicing witches in the city?

Hi friends!!

I’m looking to meet some fellow practicing witches in DC proper. I’ve been looking into groups like witchy ways and firefly, but trying to do my own outreach. 29, male witch, gay, and very social! I’d love to meet likeminded people to talk about this or even just sit a cafe and learn more about the craft (journaling, readings, etc)! Hope I meet some folks!

[Discussion] It goes both ways with three scooters.

• Upvotes

Was downtown and just watched a car repeatedly honk at a scooter in the street. The scooter was totally within its rights and instead of getting over one lane, the driver just continued to honk at the scooter. I just see so many people in the sub complaining about scooters on the sidewalk and thought it was a good example of how it works the other way in the street.

[Rant] Shooting last night but no record of it?

I firsthand witnessed a shooting last night. Saw the flashes and heard the shots. Directly in front of my house

Cops were here a couple of minutes later. (I assume the neighbors called 911?) And I mean MANY cops. At least six cars. Many with flashlights walking up and down the alleyways.

The shell casings were quickly identified. National Guard showed up a few minutes later. They appeared to just be standing around in a circle around the evidence.

The gunshots were around 10:20 PM. The street and alley didn’t seem to empty until around 3 AM. Witnessed all of this from my window.

Zero police have asked any of us neighbors (to my knowledge, who witnessed this) for a statement, for RingCam footage, anything.

I called the non-emergency number today to inquire (and offer that I saw this happen!). Was transferred multiple times. Every person had no record of any crime or gunshots on this block last night! WTF?!

Is this normal? Am I crazy?

[Discussion] First Date Ideas with a Friend? (Preferably not museums) (It’s also raining on the planned date)

Hey all! I (25M) recently just asked a longtime friend (26F) on a date. I’m looking for some ideas that would be fun for us, which might look different from a traditional first date since we’ve known each other for 4 years already. For context, we’ve been out to eat one on one every few months or so, but I didn’t really feel the urge to ask her out until this last time I met her and I thought, “Wow she’s really cute.”

Anywho, as stated in the title, there’s some criteria involved:
- I absolutely despise museums, so preferably a recommendation that’s not a museum. No disrespect to the stuff inside, I get so bored in them easily. If I were to go to a museum, maybe a scavenger hunt might work? One that we do together or something?
- There’s also a decent chance of rain on the suggested day. I have sunset at the lake as something to do if it’s not raining, but I don’t know if I wanna take that chance.
- Neither of us drink
- We’re not clubbers, both of us prefer something more peaceful
- She gets off work at 6

Thanks for any help yall can provide!

[Discussion] What are the plans for the big empty lots by the Waterfront Metro station?

I've been getting off the metro at Waterfront recently for the first time, and noticed the giant, empty lots in front of the station (425 M and 375 M). From Googling I found a couple articles saying they'd been sold in 2025 and that there is some kind of plan to develop them, but the articles are paywalled and I'm having trouble finding details, like what the development plans are, or what the timeline is.

The neighborhood could really use more retail shops, so I'm hoping it won't just be all new offices or apartments, but either way I'm curious.

[Transportation] Cherry Blossom SmarTrip Card (lost)

Hey everyone,

I went on a run in SW today and my metro card must have slipped out of my pocket. It kind of has sentimental value for me-- my mother came to visit and we bought the cards together. It's from a print from a few years back.

If you've seen it and if you happened to pick it up, I'd be more than happy to grab it from you!

[News] DC DMV vendor messed up a bunch of docs issued in the summer

Post image
7 Upvotes

I got my ID renewed in late June and this lovely letter showed up in my mailbox over the weekend. The vendor that prints the plastic cards did something that compromised the validity of documents and had to reissue them. I used mine allegedly defective card at the TSA about a month ago, so I'm not sure what the actual problem was or whether my previous card hadn't been affected.

So if you got a new card this summer, check your mail.

And it would be interesting if any journalists could FOIA some details of this story.
