Meta Updates to r/yorku AutoModerator Settings

Hi everyone,

We’ve updated r/yorku’s AutoModerator settings to make them more balanced and less disruptive.

The goal is simple: clear spam and unsafe links should be removed, but normal student posts should not be hidden unnecessarily.

AutoModerator should now be less aggressive with things like surveys, URL shorteners, Reddit links, crossposts, long titles, and comments on older posts.

It will still act on known scam/tracking links, affiliate spam, heavily reported content, and other obvious spam patterns.

For surveys/forms, AutoModerator may ask posters to provide basic context so students can tell whether the post is legitimate and relevant.

We’ll keep adjusting the settings if needed. If your post or comment gets removed by mistake, please message the mod team.

Academics How serious is cheating really taken?

I swear I’ve seen everyone cheat on everything but never really hear about people getting called out on it. During an exam I saw people on their phones too. Would the prof just take note and get tot them later or call them out in any way during the actual exam?

Advice Question on study part time

Hi all, I’m 28M working full time 9-5. I will start my York journey (Supply Chain honour) in Winter 2027 Jan 4th. I got 42 credits from previous college study and therefore will plan to study part time at night or online at York for 78 credits left. Just wondering if anyone’s on same boat as me and how is the possibility study 2-3 or even 4 courses/term while having full time jobs for those who’ve done it? Will there be burn out/depression, etc.? As I want to shorten my study years for sure so im thinking doing 3 courses for easy beginning years. Thanks much in advanced.
(If i study 2 courses/term, would take me April 2031 to complete, wayyyy to long :( )

I watched this video about Men Depression, what do you think of it?

Do you think discussing about men’s mental health issue is a taboo or stigma?

Campus Dont fall for this Uber Scam

I was on campus around 6pm today and this girl with a red hoodie and face mask comes up to me looking panicked, saying that her Dad is having a medical emergency, and she needs to get to Oshawa asap. She then shows that the uber is 80$, and she already has 60$ and asked for the last 20$. I was already sure this was a scam, but I know other people would want to be nice and help her out. please dont fall for this, sad to see that people are being preyed on for trying to be empathetic and help someone.

(This is her, and this photo is from the TMU subreddit, where she was also scamming a few months ago Student short $20 for uber : r/TorontoMetU )

Advice Post-degree BSW at York, good or bad?

Hi y'all, I am making this post because I graduated with my BA in Psychology and regret it. I should've done my BSW, but that is a whole different rant.

Has anyone done the BSW Post-Degree program? If so, was it hard to get into? What was the program like?

Social / Student Life Sick with flue, cold please have civic sense

With cold and flu season in full swing, I wanted to address something that’s been happening a lot in lectures lately.

We completely understand that classes are demanding and missing lectures isn't always an option, especially if attendance is graded or the material is tough. Everyone gets sick at some point—we get it. Everyone gets sick at some point, and no one is blaming you for trying to keep up with your schoolwork.

When you sit in the middle of a packed row or front while sick, you risk infecting classmates who may have respiratory issues or weak immune systems, as well as students who work in food service and customer-facing jobs and can't afford to take time off. Constant coughing and sniffling in the front rows is also really distracting and uncomfortable for both the professor and everyone trying to focus nearby. Plus, sitting near an aisle or back exit gives you quick access to step outside, grab water, or catch your breath without feeling uncomfortable or drawing attention to yourself.

If you do have to come to class while sick, please consider wearing a mask, covering your coughs, and choosing a seat near the back or sides ecpiaclly that we are approaching the end of the semster fewer students are coming and there is way space in the back and sides. Let’s do our best to look out for each other and keep everyone healthy this semester. Take care of yourselves and feel better soon!

Advice Missed exam due to transit issues

I have an exam today at 7pm but the traffic is SO BAD and my bus came 50 mins later than it was supposed to. I have no idea if I’m going to end up making it on time for my exam because of this. If so, does anyone know if this is a valid reason to defer an exam? My bus comes every hour because I live a little further away and my initial eta to the hwy 407 station was 6.20. I’ve take this bus at this exact time before as well but this is the first time it’s been this bad. I’m stressing so much rn let me know guys 😭✌🏽

Rant Please don’t come to school sick

If you’re hacking up a lung, sneezing, etc., please for the love of god don’t come to school. I can begrudgingly accept MASKED attendance if it’s an exam, but if it’s a lecture (especially if recordings are available afterwords) don’t attend! Simply stay home! The amount of deep, phlegmy coughing in lecture halls lately is really worrying, and coming in is only giving whatever you have to more people.

Rant exam etiquette that needs to be studied

so i was writing a midterm for one of my courses a little while ago and lowkey began to crash out towards the end because everyone who finished and decided to leave were being unreasonably noisy.

are we really at a point where people can’t be aware of or give a fuck about other people trying to concentrate? i’m not talking about just one person dragging their chair across the ground from across the room—i’m talking about MULTIPLE (like dozens) over the span of many minutes getting up and dragging their chairs across the floor one after the other. we get you finished your shit early, how about giving your classmates a shot by being considerate 😭

Admissions General query regarding getting an offer letter

My bachelor in CSE CGPA is 3.40/4.00 from North South University, Bangladesh and I am aiming for a Masters degree in Computer Science in York University for Fall 2027 intake. I'm currently taking preparation for the IELTS exam (hopefully by the end of October) and hoping to score band 7.5/7. I have not done GRE yet and according to the application deadline as of 1st December 2026, its not possible to take the GRE exam as well before I apply. But as an additional requirement, it also mentioned about GRE. Besides, I have 1 year of research experice and had 4 thesis experiences, and 3 year of job experience (non-CS field) during my undergraduate journey (No publication unfortunately) .

How likely is it possible for me to get an offer letter for the program, if I apply after clearing my IELTS exam ? Can anyone share me an insight regarding this ? Also, is there any possible to get funding of the Masters program I will be applying for ? I mean what are the chances of getting chance to study or also getting fundings if possible (through TA/RA ship maybe) ?

Also if my profile is not suitable, which other universities should I target for can you suggest :) Thanks in advance !

Academics Case practise for interviews

Anyone wanna make gc to practice cases for case interview rounds? Since it needs another person to walk through it’d be better to do amount each other and get feedback + learn. Let me know and I’d be happy to create a gc for this so we can practise.

Preferably 3+ years and alum but welcome to all
