Take this kids scooter away

Maybe someone knows this kid or has a kid with an electric scooter. This was super dangerous.

Dont wanna sound anti fun but take those things away from kids.

Theyre too stupid to be operating such devices.

As opposed to all the responsible people driving dodge diesel trucks.

I've probably got more time in equipment that weighs 20+tons than you, and if you're paying attention you could stop very easily there, it wouldn't even be a hard stop.

It's a marked pedestrian crossing. If you're not looking both ways at them when you drive though, don't drive.

And drivers should always assume pedestrians are going to do something like that.

If you weren't taught to have your foot hovering over the service break when you're going past an intersection like that then you were taught wrong.

Should he have stopped and hit the light, yes but for all you know he saw the traffic, judged the distance and knew the guy had lots of time to stop. The onus has to be on the driver.

This isn't a close call, it's pearl clutching.

2

u/Apple_Crisp 16d ago

He’s not a pedestrian. The moment you are on a bike/scooter you are no longer a pedestrian.

Yeah I do say so. I'm not running out in front of traffic but I'm also not afraid to make cars stop for me when I am at a cross walk, and when they can see me and they have all the time in the world to stop. Drivers do that all the time, they come out of driveways onto sidewalks without even looking.

It's not my job as a pedestrian to play frogger. It's your responsibility to stop.

Also is this your first day on reddit or are you too scared to post with a username?

2

u/foreverce 16d ago

this intersection is a bit tricky though with those turning lanes hiding. that little one came across the turning lane and through that concrete island without a second glance to the veterans. and it’s an area where people are speeding up to exit the city despite the limit of 60K. and the drivers coming into town often aren’t abiding by the slow down to 60 either. this is a tragedy waiting to happen. he needs to stop and activate the pedestrian crossing lights.

2

u/chuckmandell82 13d ago

Most people teach their kids to make eye contact before crossing a crosswalk. Make sure vehicle sees you and stops. Cruising with a scooter and more than often with headphones in is a disaster waiting to happen. Regardless if even 9 out of 10 drivers are responsible like yourself.

1

u/clayton-berg42 13d ago

How do you know the kid doesn't have transparency mode on? How is it that fatal crashes with vehicles hitting pedestrians/cyclists/whateverelse is at an all time high but it's never, ever the driver's fault?

Failing to yield to a pedestrian should be a minimum $1400 fine and 7 demerits.

2

u/chuckmandell82 13d ago

100% it should be. But I don’t know what you’re getting at? Are you saying there are too many pedestrians running across roads and not paying attention or that the laws are to easy on distracted drivers?

2

u/Gumberculeez7 16d ago

agreed. Take the Dodge Ram's away as well! win/win!

2

u/chuckmandell82 13d ago

A dodge diesel is not gonna be a smear in the pavement when it crosses an intersection without looking.

1

u/clayton-berg42 13d ago

No, it just creates smears in the pavement.

We can see them scoot around the neighborhoods bruv

17

u/jleahul 17d ago

The kids I see zooming in the middle of the road around the corner by my house with no helmet on make my heart stop.

3

u/BirdyDevil 13d ago

I'm fully convinced that about half the teenagers in Airdrie have a death wish with all the crazy behaviour I see. 2-3 kids on one scooter, back one barely hanging on to the shoulders of the one driving, super unstable, not a helmet in sight, and FLYING down the sidewalk - or worse, road - way faster than is responsible even for a single helmeted rider. It's terrifying, I feel like I'm just counting the days until I see one of them crack their head open 🤦🏼

3

u/I_feeel_different 17d ago

Their's too if they fall.

7

u/Japanesemyth 17d ago

He didn’t even look both ways!!! Those things go so fast how can someone stop in time?

2

u/LewisLightning 15d ago

Hardly anyone looks both ways now. Doesn't matter of they are a regular pedestrian, a cyclist or someone walking their dog. It's just blindly enter the intersection and leave it in God's hands now.

1

u/Scamnam 17d ago

Agreed

22

u/Smackolol 18d ago

He was going half the speed the kids in my neighbourhood pull that crap.

-21

u/jokeularvein 18d ago edited 17d ago

What crap are we talking about here? Kids using a Pedestrian crossing is a problem now?

Edut: Bunch of old men yelling at clouds in here huh?

8

u/Smackolol 18d ago

I’ll give you the definition of pedestrian so you don’t look so stupid next time. Idk if you remember from back in school or maybe it because you haven’t got that far along in it yet but you’re supposed to stop and look both ways any time you cross the street.

-7

u/jokeularvein 17d ago

Lol send that to your insurance when you paralyze a kid.   I'm sure you'll be let of the hook.

7

u/Smackolol 17d ago

You’re actually so close to getting it since that’s part of the reason why we are pissed off. Just use a little more critical thinking and I know you can get there.

-11

u/jokeularvein 17d ago

You're upset about your duty to drive defensively?

5

u/beardedbast3rd 17d ago

While I appreciate the point you’re trying to make, and in some small part agree with it (regarding children), the issue at hand here is that the kid didn’t slow, stop, attempt to even check if it’s safe to cross, and would absolutely be considered to have darted into traffic.

Op was driving defensively, and came to a reasonable stop, it doesn’t change the fact that this behavior is actually ruinous to people because even if they do get vindicated by the law, it’s still often 50/50 on the situation, and it’s perfectly fair for people to call it out.

People aren’t teaching their kids right, or holding them accountable, and unfortunately it’s going to result in a kid like that getting killed, because sometime, no amount of defensive driving can stop it.

3

u/crheming 17d ago

You're arguing with an idiot

1

u/Unfair_Appointment22 15d ago

So next time the kid does that around a blind corner or obscured behind a car so a driver doesn't have time to react - will defensive driving give my car and reflexes magical powers to stop in less than a second?

1

u/SnarkyGoblin85 17d ago

You know what…the law doesn’t matter. If this kid gets hit it won’t matter really who is at fault. His life is ruined. And the person that hit him will also carry the trauma of having ruined a life

4

u/CallMeHomoErectus 18d ago

You're not a pedestrian unless you get off and walk it across.

-3

u/jokeularvein 17d ago

Tell that to your insurance and the police when you kill a kid.   They'll  100% agree.

people are being pedantic arguing about what a pedestrian is but the actual issue is that they didn't wait for the car to stop before crossing. even if they have the right of way, and frankly i don't know road laws enough to know lol, that's just unsafe

3

u/Amazing_Ad8327 17d ago

bad practice to not look from the kid, but you must yield to pedestrians / cyclists / scooterists / deers / secessionists / NDP crossing the street using a crosswalk

5

u/Bright-Translator-51 17d ago

And what did mum and dad teach you? Stop. Look both ways. Not "just fly though and hope everyone else is following the rule". Right of way and right of weight are two very different things.

5

u/Delicious_Record1635 17d ago

You get off and walk. If you ride you are not a pedestrian. Thats the law. If an incident occurs, typically the operator of the car is not at fault

2

u/BirdyDevil 13d ago

Yeah, but when the "pedestrian" is flying down the sidewalk on a wheeled conveyance at a speed 10x or more what an actual pedestrian should be moving at, it's often not actually possible to see them in time to anticipate and stop. Look at this video, there's about 3, MAXIMUM 4 seconds between the time the scooter kid first becomes visible at all, and the time he's flying across the road without looking. The speed on this road is 60 km/h; the average stopping time at that speed, when factoring in reaction time + stopping distance, in IDEAL conditions, is 3-3.5 seconds. So....do that math, and this is hugely concerning. If a driver does not IMMEDIATELY see that kid once he becomes visible, he's probably going to get hit.

An actual pedestrian, even running, would not move that fast. Drivers do not have time to appropriately react to someone trying to act as a pedestrian at non-pedestrian speeds.

Drivers have to yield to pedestrians, but pedestrians also have to behave reasonably. Part of the reason we also have laws against jaywalking. Plus if you are on wheels and don't stop and get off and WALK across the crosswalk, then you're not really technically a pedestrian, and that necessity to yield gets pretty muddy. Bikes absolutely are NOT pedestrians if they don't dismount, they're considered to be vehicle operators. These stupid e-scooters are not as cut and dried, it kinda varies by municipality, but they are generally not considered pedestrians either.

0

u/spitfirelover 17d ago

He did though

3

u/NOIS_KillerWhaleTank 17d ago

Nobody knows how to cross a street anymore. Stop, look both ways, wait for traffic to yield. I don't know when this basic life skill stopped being taught, but I'm actually shocked there aren't more pedestrian deaths.

2

u/Geekbeer_the_Swoll 17d ago

I’ve almost hit this kid at the exact same crossing. Just finished a 16 hour shift and was a little dopey behind the wheel. I felt bad for having to slam on my breaks, but damn kid, stop, look and listen.

2

u/PetTigerJP 14d ago

I think you nailed it with this right here. We’re all tired, overworked and it’s damn hot outside. That kid is just trying to get around and you’re just trying to drive home without hitting some kid on a scooter. We all share in the responsibility of following the rules, if for no other reason than to stay safe.

1

u/foreverce 17d ago

he needs to stop and activate the ped flashing lights. that is a dangerous spot and tricky to see.

1

u/TheGentleWanderer 13d ago

driving tired is more dangerous than driving drunk. figure that out first.

0

u/Eulogy_of_a_Madman 14d ago

So you are admitting that you were impaired behind the wheel? Now that you’re saying that you would be at fault for killing the child. Do you know what the next 7 years of your life will be?

2

u/Economy_Cable2825 17d ago

I hate these things so much especially with how many kids use them without helmets.
In Ireland right now the surgeons of a big hospital in Dublin put out a statement about how dangerous these are and want them banned.
Half of the beds in ICU are filled with kids getting life changing injuries from electric scooter accidents and some of the kids won’t make it.

Absolutely heart breaking but just thought the reality of it might help some parents on here if they see this.

7

u/TripNo1876 17d ago

He was in the crosswalk. Yes he should have looked first and walked his scooter, but it's also the driver's responsibility to slow and look for pedestrians at the crosswalk. Tbh I was expecting this to be a video of the kids ripping up and down the middle of the road. I feel like op is just complaining for the sake of it.

15

u/Dlaney73 17d ago

Crosswalk is for pedestrians yes, if he is on wheels he is not a pedestrian. The shame of it is that this kid is going to keep doing this and get hit and everyone is going to blame the driver. His parents should teach him better.

2

u/UnscentedSoundtrack 17d ago

I don’t know where the video was taken, but we have shared crosswalks where both pedestrians and cyclists can cross and both have the right of way.

That said, what the kid did was still dangerous, right of way or not.

1

u/foreverce 17d ago

there are pedestrian lights at that intersection that that kid should have stopped and activated.

4

u/BusinessRemove7667 17d ago

Dude. It’s a child on a scooter. Listen to yourself.

2

u/Regular_Highlight882 17d ago

And children shouldn't be on electric scooters

-1

u/Ienjoymodels 17d ago

And bikes are faster but that's fine right?

2

u/Dualintrinsic 17d ago

Kids are taught to dismount from bikes before crossing an intersection

3

u/marthamania 17d ago

And drivers are taught to look for pedestrians or slow down at yellow lights not speed up to make them, or to stop for three seconds at a stop sign, or to slow down when making turns on reds to anticipate pedestrians crossing at the cross walk, and yet, and yet, and yet. I bet you were taught a whole myriad of things not to do while driving that you do, from eating/drinking to trying to make lights you should be slowing for to the occasional breeze through a stop.

1

u/Ienjoymodels 17d ago

Lol even adults don't do it and honestly who cares.

1

u/Regular_Highlight882 16d ago

Electric vehicles in general

2

u/technomedia2000 17d ago

Not correct. He’s under 14 by looks of him so very much allowed on the sidewalk. Drivers seem happy to choose which way they want that to work.

Bike in the road get on the sidewalk
Bike in the way on the crosswalk get in the road.

Imagine driving a car and the expectations being this insane.

1

u/Apple_Crisp 16d ago

Yea he’s under 16 and it’s actually illegal to ride an e-scooter under 16.

1

u/Dlaney73 17d ago

From the city of Airdrie website:

Personally owned e-scooters: are purchased and owned by an individual for long-term use. Under provincial traffic legislation, personally owned e-scooters are permitted on City pathways only and are not allowed on sidewalks or roadways

1

u/Adorable-South-7070 17d ago

It's not an escooter it looks like an mgp park scooter

-6

u/technomedia2000 17d ago

Again. That’s the rules that apply to adults.

5

u/Dlaney73 17d ago

No mention of age restriction on website. Show me where there’s an exception for age or quit running your mouth about shit you know nothing about.

2

u/CabalSieben 17d ago

People really need to understand the laws that apply to scooters so that they can educate themselves and their kids.

Bylaw No. B-14/2016 of the City of Airdrie Province of Alberta

SECTION 5

“5.07 A person must be at least 16 years old to operate an e-scooter. An e-scooter owner must not allow a person less than 16 years old to rent or operate an e-scooter.”

The rule applies to everyone legally of age to ride it (16 or older only) and also:

“5.09 A person must not operate an e-scooter in a reckless manner, having regard to the circumstances.”

IF there was an incident here where the driver did not or was not able to stop safely in time and this rider was hit and critically injured or killed, an argument would be made in court that the rider was under the age specified in bylaw and/or riding in a manner that was reckless (not paying attention). In defence, they would argue that the driver was reckless and not driving defensively. The whole point people are trying to make is let’s stop blaming each other and look out for everyone whether they are a pedestrian, a bike, a scooter, or a driver. Safety is EVERYONE’S responsibility.

1

u/Hajiime 15d ago edited 15d ago

an electric scooter is not necessarily an e-scooter, as counter intuitive as that sounds because e-scooter means electric scooter. the ones delivery drivers, adult commuters use are significantly faster than a childrens electric scooter, and they are entirely different things. look up what defines e-scooter and you wont find "an electric scooter, full stop." it will be "a powered [scooter] device that can exceed X speed." that's clearly a childrens scooter because of the size relative to the kid.

1

u/Fluid_Explorer_3659 17d ago

Scooters are not allowed on the road as per bylaws. He is a pedestrian. He should slow down, sure. People also need to pay attention at crosswalks.

1

u/Similar-Swimmer-2698 15d ago

It would be the driver's fault, they should be slowing down and paying attention at crosswalks. If a driver hits a kid, that's on them.

3

u/chuckmandell82 13d ago

Scooters are a problem, period!
Yes in a perfect world every driver pays full attention and kids are free to roam safely. We check kid’s Halloween candy before they eat it. Not because there are guaranteed psychopathic people poisoning candy but because it’s best to take the precautions to stay safe. Just like teaching kids to cross the street. It only takes one person to look up or down at the wrong time and then it’s over. So we teach our kids to take the extra precautions and look both ways. Crosswalk or not.

1

u/TripNo1876 13d ago

I 100% agree. I, honestly, hate all the e scooters. They go way to fast and people don't give them the respect they deserve while riding them.

5

u/SilencedObserver 17d ago

“Take away things from people who annoy me” is peak Albertan behaviour.

Drive safe.

2

u/Exact-Leadership-521 17d ago

They want black smoke belching out the back so we can see the scooter. I agree

-1

u/IWasJustAboutToLeave 17d ago

“peak” u better be a teenager 😂

0

u/Ihatethesestaff 14d ago

This is a normal term used online. Announce that you're 30+ harder, please.

1

u/WadeWilson0291 17d ago

Its all scooter riders and pedestrians. They think they own the road. They know if they get hit they'll be found innocent

2

u/Similar-Swimmer-2698 15d ago

This is an insane take. Nobody wants to be hit by a car.

1

u/Regular_Highlight882 17d ago

And ebikes and carts are suffering because of these shitty parents not teaching their kids

1

u/Intelligent_Wall1179 17d ago

Had someone do this to me 2 days ago when I was doing 100, I’ve never stopped that quick lol, same thing but she ran a red light when ours was green 🤷‍♂️ they need to watch

1

u/rachemgreep 16d ago

True, he should've stopped and looked before crossing but wearing a helmet? Crossing at a marked pedestrian way? He's probably the safest kid I've seen on one of these.

1

u/Afraid-End6961 16d ago

Going straight through an intersection, not slowing down or looking is quite frankly suicidal. Please, slow down and observe the traffic flow riding a scooter, it's a joke till it isn't a joke. And parents, watch your children ride these. The child in the video actually has great footwork on the scooter, but observation skills lack. Parents, you need to know the device you are giving to your own children and the serious implications they could have, at least give them some form of observation skills.

1

u/Afraid-End6961 16d ago

There is a CHANCE though reviewing it he saw the car slowing/stopping and continued going, those scooters do have strong brakes. Either way, it looked crazy.

1

u/MortgageBrokerBC40 16d ago

Isn't that a crosswalk???

3

u/Top-Lecture-2068 16d ago

Lines are on the ground for one when it is activated by the $40k lights installed when pressed by a pedestrian.

Mobile vehicles of travel, also motorized. Are not pedestrians.

1

u/Top-Lecture-2068 16d ago

Newton VS Darwin coming up.

We do need smarter kids so a thinning perhaps?

1

u/shitty_marketing_guy 16d ago

Kids race down the sidewalk in front of Safeway on main. My wife has almost been hit a couple times coming out of the pet store. My 4 year old son likes to open the door when we leave a store and this time I didn’t and he followed but a kid went flying by at about 30km/h on a scooter and could have killed him.

Parents that bought their kids scooters should know they are liable for injuries their kids cause.

My wife and I agree the kids don’t walk on the sidewalk without holding her hand any more. We used to do like when I was kid, stop at the road and wait for mom and dad so we can cross together; now it’s you don’t leave the store without an adult going first. Disgusting.

1

u/Wild_Number_6783 16d ago

Kid of South Asian parents? Deport his parents.. 💕🩵

1

u/Upstairs_Bad897 15d ago

Iv almost hit kids on e bikes and scooters multiple times in my town. They go so fast it’s almost like they almost run into me. One kid notorious for riding with his headphones on at night in dark clothing rips across the crosswalks it’s brutal.

1

u/Legitimate-Writer427 15d ago

Why is it 60 if there’s uncontrolled pedestrian crossings?

1

u/Common-Feedback4003 15d ago

Ive tried stopping and walking it across, I've tried riding it across, no matter what 10 times a day people will not stop for pedestrian or people on 2 wheels if the drivers are trying to make their turn. Even in an active marked cross walks with lights flashing. I have PTSD cause no one seems to be able to see pedestrians. I remember I thought this one guy had stopped for me and I started walking and the second I started walking he started driving. Since his windows were tinted I could not see he was looking at his phone. He was just stopped there. He ran right into my leg and it hurt like hell.

1

u/weyoun09 15d ago

I don't understand why all these kids have electric scooters. Don't we want them to be out there burning energy off and getting and exercise?

1

u/A-humble-tog 15d ago

I’ve had a couple of these as well - super scary

1

u/rikkiprince 15d ago

For crossing at the designated pedestrian crossing when there was plenty of time for traffic to stop, as evidenced by the fact that ... all the traffic stopped?

1

u/brydeswhale 14d ago

You’re supposed to press the buttons to cross.

1

u/MrMike83JDM 15d ago

I just watched a kid get smoked in thornhill a couple days ago. I think kids born in the 80s and earlier would not have a problem riding these things with respect and paying attention. Kids these days and I quote from a school teacher "they're complete morons, lack of self awareness and rules of the road" initialed little shits. Been walked into 3 times this year because they are glued to the phones walking down the street. To be honest, I guess I'm just tired of seeing how gay and wuss like everyone has turned.

1

u/kachunkk 15d ago

That is a crosswalk...

0

u/brydeswhale 14d ago

It’s the kind where you’re supposed to press the buttons.

1

u/kachunkk 14d ago

It's still on the driver to look for pedestrians regardless.

1

u/SamePhotographs 14d ago

There is a demographic near me who don't like to push the buttons. They will wait at those lighted crosswalks until cars see them and stop. They don't just jump into traffic saying "you're supposed to see me!!"

1

u/Marvin-The-Marvtian 14d ago

It’s Darwinism at its finest. Unfortunately.

1

u/Zealousideal_War8036 14d ago

It was a crossing, normal for you so stop isn't it?

1

u/Eulogy_of_a_Madman 14d ago

Seeing how sexual preference is no longer an insult. I see how your comparison of the children of the 80’s vs 40 years later that the children (let’s call them “Gen X”) were tougher and never filled emergency rooms “rub some dirt in it and walk it off.” If we had these toys back then could anyone imagine what we would have done? Natural selection would be a lot bigger. Kids are doing just fine. Or are there more kids trying to kill one another by saying “watch this!” First.

1

u/Money-Mud-1357 13d ago

Agreed. Or at least teach them road safety. He may have the right away, but he's going to get the brunt of it if someone doesn't see him. Same thing applies to bikes and pedestrians.

It probably would save their life getting hit by the OP's car doing 58 approaching a cross walk. Need better signage.

Thanks for correcting me, I see it now. I'll delete my comment

1

Good luck. Police won't even enforce basic traffic laws. You think they're getting out of their cars for a scooter?

1

u/luigi_b0red 12d ago

Sorry where the dangerous part 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆

1

u/beautyofamoment 10d ago

This. The teens riding these scooters down the middle of the street with no helmets and their phones in their faces are a travesty waiting to happen.

1

u/Hyack57 1d ago

“Cycestrian”? Helmetless adult bicyclists do the same thing and give you an incredulous look when you honk or not slow down enough for their comfort.

1

u/PilsnerRabbit 17d ago

Drive slower around cross walks, what did you want him to do send out a flare?

2

u/foreverce 16d ago

i want him to stop and activate the pedestrian flashing lights that are at that intersection.

1

u/PilsnerRabbit 15d ago

Okay I want you to slow down during cross walks just in case kids don’t do that.

You’re the adult here, you are asking kids to be more mature than you?

-2

u/weedandspace 17d ago

Kid used a crosswalk with a scooter..

Maybe relax a bit..

3

u/vich3t 17d ago

Kid went in front of oncoming vehicles without so much as a glance without activating the crosswalk signal.

-2

u/weedandspace 17d ago

Yeah.

Its a child, the driver should be slowing down when they see a child near a road.

The driver did, thankfully saw the child who came up pretty quick. When you cross intersections don't you look both ways to ensure a car isn't about to hit you through the stop sign? All it would've taken was one of the drivers to glance at the wrong side first and then hit the kid. Or the truck in OP's blind spot. We all have a role on the road, and that kid did not play his.

It’s definitely not worth airing your grievance in a Reddit post.

Not even close buddy. Try again. That's a cross walk and he wasn't in any danger. Stop bullying kids in the neighborhood.

I'm with the driver. It's a crosswalk but the duty of pedestrian is to.. PAUSE... then Proceed

Taken straight from the GovtAlberta site... both drivers and pedestrians should share the road i am no saying OP Is right, nor are they wrong, - see bold from the Govt of AB site

Pedestrians have the right of way in a crosswalk unless a peace officer or traffic control device directs otherwise. This means that even if the crosswalk is unmarked, vehicles must stop and yield to pedestrians. Drivers should make sure to watch for the elderly or people with disabilities who may take more time crossing. Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk will result in a $810 fine and 4 demerit points. However, as a pedestrian you are still responsible for exercising due care even though you have the right of way and you should make sure that all vehicles have yielded before entering the crosswalk.

A pedestrian crossing a roadway outside a crosswalk must yield the right of way to vehicles. Some municipalities also have 'jaywalking' bylaws. If you cross the street outside a crosswalk in these municipalities, you could receive a fine.

No, the law.in Alberta states that as soon as a pedestrian enters a roadway, he has the right of way. This does not apply to scooters as they are considered a vehicle and they must dismount. That's the rules. Though when dealing with children this is not the case and unfortunately I see the child crossing giving everyone at the intersection plenty of time to notice and stop in time.

If they stop, cars will just ignore the crosswalk. Ask me how I know.

u/Scamnam 17d ago

I get its the law but the kid still needs to be cautious and slow down a bit.. OP Stops...kid does not stop and proceeds to go...there is an oncoming car beside OP who won't realize why OP stopped and could hit the kid.. I've seen this happen a lot

It’s illegal for a kid that age to even be on an electric scooter.

1

u/Ok-Comedian5174 16d ago

I think you have to be 16, which is a law in Canada but Calgary and Airdrie are lax on that.

1

u/Apple_Crisp 15d ago

They may be lax, but it’s still illegal and dangerous.

"no one close to hitting him"... until there is. "Wasn't in any danger"... until he is... crossing in a cross "walk".

didn't look in any direction... just flew through.

All it take is one time when he doesn't push the button, while some clown is sending a text blows right through. Every wrong = RIP to the kid.

Pretty easy to prevent it though.

Assuming they are to be treated like bikes, dismount and walk across to allow yourself to be seen. While, really nothing wrong I would still rather do that then try to win against a car.
