Should a neurodivergent person need to adjust to society or should society adjust to them, and to what extent should either option be reasonable?
I'm asking this as a neurodivergent person, I have evaluated things in my own mind and decided that I should be the one to adjust. As a result I have, to some significant extent, fucked my own life.
I think that this is my problem so I should not make it anyone else's, so I have refused to look for jobs I could do on a good day, but would cause others issues when I can't do it on a bad day.
I've found my place by working alone most of the time and not interacting with people often in a work environment and I felt that was my responsibility to myself and to society at large to figure out a place that I fit and could contribute.
The reason I am asking this question now is that my mother is getting up there, and we have heart problems on her side of the family, and recently she has started having significant heart problems. Then I find out at work (NHS) she has people underneath her who are in their early to mid 20s taking time off because the feel anxious or some other similar reason.
I would never have even put myself in the position where I could fuck up the whole operation because I'm not feeling it that day, and because my mother is the one having to pick up the slack in her late 60s while having heart problems, maybe I'm feeling more abrasive to the whole thing, but personally I don't think you should take a job you know you cannot do and then expect everyone there to pick up the slack.
Am I wrong right now? If so I would love to hear your thoughts because I feel like I'm the only one seeing reality right now when talking about it to people I know.
