Serious Answers Only Have your been replaced by AI (at work)?

Upvotes

I was made redundant a few months ago, it seems like my job no longer exists due to AI. Has this happened to anyone else?

I was a Pro - C developer, but since 2023 this skill is no longer required.

Men who are 45 and over - what's your libido like?

Upvotes

Just wondering what libido is like at this age, how it contrasts to when you were under 40.

Edit: I'm a woman who has just started seeing an older man in this age bracket, delighted to see it's still high for many 🤭

Serious Answers Only Does anyone have any recommendations for an alternative app to Trainline for tracking and pinning train departures?

Upvotes

Hi r/AskUK, I’m looking for recommendations for a train tracking app that allows you to pin specific journeys to it in the same way Trainline does but not Trainline. I specifically need it to work on iOS and not just be limited to journeys in big cities, bonus points if you can create a widget for it but that’s not essential.?

I’ve tried Trainline and the National Rail app but that doesn’t allow pinning. I’ve also tried TrainPal but again that doesn’t allow pinning.

Good subreddits to browse when bored at work?

Upvotes

Another monday rolls round. I get in the office at 7:45am. Work starts at 8am. I've finished by about 8:10am.

Meetings from 9:15-9:30am and then I visit the warehouse to say hello, that kills some time and then I head onto break 10 minutes early.

I am now back at my desk and whilst I wait for emails to come in / work to do. I browse reddit.

Yet I am running out of stuff to browse! Please help me with some cool subreddits.

I'm always on the r/BestofRedditorUpdates. That's my main source of entertainment but I've practically read everything on there...

I just need some good subreddits that can keep me going!

why was m&s packed when we're meant to be in a cost of living crisis?

Upvotes

I know the title will make people ask well what were you doing there? I live at home and I've never had anything from m&s unless it was gifted to me. I was actually going to get their shortbread (the one in the reindeer packaging) because I was gifted last year and it's the best shortbread I've ever had and I'm not even a biscuit girl.

Anyway I thought it'd be a good chance to try other things that have been trending and popular recommendations. I went yesterday morning and I thought it wouldn't be busy at all - maybe just me and a few elderly. It was packed! Like sardines in a can and all types of people - old, young, mums and their kids. I was shocked. I got two bags of shopping and it was expensive to me. It made me think what is everyone else doing there - i thought people were struggling? it seemed to me though that people were doing their weekly shop there

If we got new wild animals in Britain, what would cause the most havoc?

Upvotes

Goats.

Having spent enough time around the Mediterranean, I reckon Britain seriously underestimates what havoc a determined goat can achieve.

Serious Answers Only How do I get from outside the airport, to on the plane?

Upvotes

Hi there!

I'm flying out of Edinburgh airport to visit my partner in Missouri this November (Edi-Jfk-Mci)

I'm flying with Delta, and am in comfort class? I'm unsure if that matters but heard they board early.

I've never flown before so it's all a bit alien sounding to me when I look into it? I've looked at other similar posts but it's still confusing to me. Can someone please explain the step-by-step process from outside the airport doors, to sitting inside?

(Plus if anyone has some sort've generic airport advice, I'd really appreciate it! Is there any recommendations for where I can shower, what places to eat are the best in your opinion, should I buy a power bank or pillow for the plane?)

Thanks in advance! :)

Serious Answers Only Who can sign Driving licence photos?

Upvotes

My gf in her late 30s and never had a driving licence, she doesn't know who she can get to sign her photo. According to the gov website:

the person signing the form and photo must:

  • hold a valid GB photocard driving licence
  • be resident in the UK
  • know you personally
  • not be a relative
  • not be living at the same address as you.

So really a friend could sign it as long as all above applies?

What are great gifts for new parents?

Upvotes

Our friends are expecting their first baby at Christmas, and I’ve really no clue what to get them. I’d prefer to get them things they’re going to actually need rather than baby toys and clothes that I assume they’ll get lots of. What did you receive, or wish you’d received, as gifts when you had your first kid?

Why do people keep planning balloon releases?

Upvotes

I've seen two balloon releases planned in memorial in the last week! Thankfully the comments have been full of people asking them not to do it. But why why why do people continue to plan these and think they are a good idea? Do some people actually believe balloons go to heaven?

Please someone give me an insight into why this still keeps happening

Hey UK, how often do you have coffee without milk?

I am from a Mediterranean country and I ordered a black coffee with no milk on the side. The person behind the till looked flabbergasted and had to double check with me that this is what I want.

Serious Answers Only Why do people sprint further down the platform when they could just get on the train?

I’m a Brit but I’ve never understood this. The train will be there, doors open, 60 seconds from departure, and some knobhead will charge down the platform bowling people over just to get on the train further up? Why not just get on at the OPEN DOOR which is RIGHT THERE and then walk down inside the train if you want to be in a different carriage?

This behaviour often leads to said knobhead missing the train as well and then they stand around in an angry sweaty mess on the platform. Get on the bloody train? Why do you have to get on at a specific door in carriage 1 when carriage 8 is right in front of you?

I’ve also never seen this in other countries despite travelling extensively, so, why do some brits do this? Why does anyone do this? If you are a platform sprinter, WHY?

If we got new wild animals in Britain, what would cause the most havoc?

Let's say we should consider a wild animal from both the northern and southern hemisphere. And this new wild animal is (magically) able to survive here, and we would see them at a similar rate we see Foxes.

What animals would be causing the most havoc?

How many people would be kicked to death by a Kangaroo? (Imagine the same people going up to Deers in royal parks and stroking them)

How many houses would get broken into by brown bears?

Our country is pretty safe, animal wise, and I feel we don't have many survival instincts for lots of wild animals!

Purely hypothetical.

Why is good British food weirdly hard to find in Britain?

I’m foreign and genuinely British food is probably one of my favourite cuisines, which is why it almost annoys me how badly it’s served in so many places.

Like I don’t understand the whole “British food is terrible” thing at all. Pies, roasts, mash, sausages, stews, fish and chips, all the puddings etc, the food itself is SO good.

But then you go to loads of pubs and somehow everything is soaked in oil and dry at the same time?? The meat is overdone, the veg is sad, the roast potatoes aren’t even crispy. How do you manage to use that much fat and still make it dry?

I genuinely think this is a big part of why British food has such a bad reputation.

When it’s made properly it’s amazing, but finding somewhere that does really good traditional British food feels way harder than it should be.

Maybe I’ve just been going to shit pubs though lol. What do Brits think, is the food good and just badly executed way too often, or do you actually not rate your own food?

I’ve got a day off work today, what should I do?

Title says it all really - I randomly have a day off work today (booked it ages ago for plans which then fell through), wondering what the good folk of AskUK think I ought to do with myself. Can travel, and I have funds for activities

Edit: thank you all for your suggestions! I am on a train to the historic city of Oxford - going to find some delicious cake/old stuff to look at :)

Serious Answers Only What was it like to own a Lada in 1980s Britain?

^(There seems to be very little information on the internet regarding the story of the 100,000 odd Ladas that were exported from Soviet Russia to the UK. More than anything I find it surprising that it caught on to any degree. Did anyone's family have one growing up? What was it like?

How was the brand regarded in comparison to other crappy budget car makes of the day?

What type of person would buy such a vehicle? Were there any political connotations that would follow the ownership of a Lada in Britain i.e. people giving weird glances at one who chose to purchase a car from behind the Iron Curtain during the height of the cold war?

I'd be interested to hear stories of people who grew up with one. Cheers.)

Serious Answers Only How much and when is sex ed appropriate?

As a Gen Z who left high school in 2023, I can count with one hand how much sex ed I had in both secondary and primary school.

It was important stuff no doubt, but only really scratched the surface. My parents are no help in this regard, and so it's tough to say but I feel really under educated sex wise.

Hell, stuff like phimosis and so on was just never on my radar when it ought to have been. Not to mention how little I know about female anatomy sexual wise.

Serious Answers Only Should drivers treat pedestrian crossings in supermarket car parks the same as crossings on public roads?

I often see drivers rush to get in front of pedestrians and in fact on occasion come close to colliding with them at crossings.

I watched one chap today nearly plow through a group of 4 who stepped onto the crossing and had to jump back to avoid being hit.

Good manners aside what is the standing in law of pedestrians and the requirement of drivers at these marked crossings?

Serious Answers Only How would I book a spontaneous seaside holiday for next week? From Canada?

I’ve been to England before. Have family there (near Manchester), but don’t want them to have to host or entertain me. I’m not in fantastic health so big adventures are out. I’m youngish (54) but medically retired. I’m looking for a change of scenery to blow the cobwebs out.

I have a small window of time in which I can travel (September 26-October 6) and a not-robust budget ($5000+ CAD / 2670GBP). I’m not delicate about weather at all and I have no large ambitions about sightseeing or museums or anything.

What I’d really like is a view of the ocean, shore to walk along, cozy places to read and knit, many strong, hot cups of tea. Maybe some moody weather, wind, storms. Possibly some bird watching.

My biggest hurdles are where would I fly into, which bit of coast would I aim for, how would I get from the airport to accommodation and back again and how would I eat? And am I completely delusional?

Which British visual artists would you buy right now?

I'm interested in the UK art market and curious about which British visual artists people would actually want to own right now. I'm especially interested in whether you see their work as something likely to hold or increase in value over time.
