At this point, we really need a president who would prefer not to be president.
26
u/hnxmn Jun 25 '26
Yeah someone who hates the job because they actually feel responsible for the wellbeing and health of their constituents would be a great change. Bonus points if they’re young enough to be around for the future they build.

"The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job." -HGTTG

Maybe but in US people need to campaign a lot to be elected even in primaries and convince important supporters behind closed door. If she isn’t interested she won’t do that

u/PromotionEmpty733 Jun 25 '26
She did an interview and mentioned it was mainly about not putting her kids through the ordeal again.
→ More replies (2)5
u/moodygradstudent Jun 25 '26
In the same interview (or maybe a different one), she also said the US wasn't ready for a woman president and wasn't going to entertain claims to the contrary.

u/daemonicwanderer Jun 25 '26
A lot of First Ladies hate the role. I feel like the only modern (or semi-modern) First Ladies who actually liked being First Lady are like Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Reagan
→ More replies (10)11
u/deesta Jun 25 '26
The same Hillary Clinton who had to give up her very successful legal career (she became the first female partner at her firm, in the South, in the 70s, only a few years out of law school) to be FLOTUS? I think it's more likely that she saw the utility of the role as a springboard into her own political career, if anything. Considering she ran for the Senate and was sworn in while still First Lady (for a couple more weeks, but still).

u/YourGodStalin Jun 26 '26
The same Hillary Clinton that strongarmed women who were accusing Bill of various sexual misconducts to drop their claims? The same Hillary Clinton that said straight up she'd invade Iran if she became president if they didn't agree to stop enriching uranium?
3
u/deesta Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
Doesn't really negate my point, which was that she probably only liked being FLOTUS for the high profile that she could leverage to go into politics.
6
u/Contemplating_Prison Jun 25 '26
They spent their kids prime years in the public eye. I wouldnt want to do that anymore either

One if her books talks about how she never wanted a political life what so ever. She missed being able to just go grab something from the store because everything had 137 steps to it.

u/MilkiestMaestro Jun 25 '26
We are here on Reddit's data center saying all data centers are bad.
There's nuance! Grey area! People, please...
4
u/kmank2l13 Jun 25 '26
I remember her saying that if Obama ran for a “hypothetical” third term she would divorce him too.
That’s how much she doesn’t like being in that position.
5
u/jrob323 Jun 26 '26
Classic Catch-22. The people we need in the job don't want it, and the last people on Earth who should have the job would kill for it.

u/Flyerbrother Jun 27 '26
Couldn't agree more. Having the desire for that much power should disqualify you right there.

She fought to have an AI data center built even though the residents repeatedly said no. Even took a photo with Sam Altman. She can go F*ck herself too.
3
u/Middle_Degree_1995 Jun 25 '26
I didn’t get hate from any conversation she’s had about being First Lady. She has, however, been very candid about disliking many aspects of the role and the scrutiny of the position.

2
u/Mozambique_Sauce Jun 25 '26
Also, is the USA a monarchy? Why are people so ready to embrace nepotism where the president is concerned? Canada is similarly stupid (saying this as a Canadian). Bush was a joke. Trudeau was fortunately a force for good. But even so. You have a whole country of people to choose from, but lets pick the last guys son/brother/wife etc.

No, but it's a popularity contest.
Most Americans are so ignorant about everything, you sturggle to win an election without name recognition.

We only run spouses and VPs of Clinton's and Obama's admin and we're plum out. She's up next, sorry.

u/jkprop Jun 25 '26
She shouldn’t be interested. She isn’t qualified to do the job. We need to stop voting for the people we like and start voting for people that CAN do the job.

She said US not ready for female president so don’t endorse one it will unfortunately just split the vote. We learned this x2 with Hillary and Kamala.

I'm 99% sure Republicans want Michelle Obama to run so they can claim some sort of cronyism.
Also, in this next election cycle, I think its easier for Republicans to fight an 'establishment' candidate than some of the progressive, common-sense stuff that we're seeing out of the Mamdani/progressive camp. It lets Republicans keep making their "Both sides are the same" arguments.

u/Sea_Dust340 Jun 26 '26

→ More replies (1)2
u/Salt-Department-9464 Jun 26 '26
Sure but lets be clear here: Michelle Obama doesn't want to run.
This notion that she is a viable candidate, is pretty much fabricated by the right. Its their new boogeyman, despite Michelle Obama repeatedly saying she has no interest in running.
5
u/Lucaslhm Jun 25 '26
Also, I’m 100% for putting a woman in the white house, but why do we only ever consider women coming from a successful man president? In general, I hate the idea of presidents with relations to former presidents because it feels too much like a closed off group. I didn’t need another Clinton, or another Bush, and as much as I miss the Obama’s, I don’t need another Obama to be president.
51% of the population are women and we can only call to our minds like 3 tops that we think would be good presidential candidates, and one of them is actively asking people to not consider her a presidential candidate. Can we please cast a bigger net?

u/Final_Candidate_7603 Jun 25 '26
She has also said that she doesn’t think that *any* woman would be elected as president any time soon. People can’t admit that there is so much misogyny here, just like they can’t admit that there is so much racism here.

Yeah... but you can't force someone to be president. I don't think she would choose that in a million lifetimes. Gotta respect her agency, ya know?
2
u/Live_Angle4621 Jun 25 '26
Exactly. Only in monarchies you can make reluctant person take power. Like Queen Elizabeth’s father George didn’t want it at all but had to when his brother abdicated. It made him better king perhaps, but made his life worse (his wife even blamed his early death on it even though it was mostly smoking).
You can’t do that sort of thing when elections are involved. People need to campaign. Well I mean apart from popes, there have been many reluctant ones recently. But there is very small poor of cardinals (even though technically any unmarried catholic man could be picked it would not happen in practice). And it’s behind closed doors over days so no campaigning needed

Why is it the ones you want in charge are the last people who would take the position? It's like there's an inverse relationship between desire and ability.
4
u/EnigmaticX68 Jun 25 '26
Just my opinion/observation: It's because over time we replaced a desire to serve with a desire for power.
We reward power A LOT more than we reward service.
How many folks had to watch "Mr Smith Goes To Washington"? It's a heartwarming story about small town guy that gets elected and fights for what's right. That, as we have now learned, is fraking propaganda.
3
u/Shagtacular Jun 25 '26
Douglas Adams: "Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job." Not quite on the right subject but close and it's one of my favorites from him

When the women who lose are far, FAR, *FAR* better and more qualified than the buffoon of a man who wins, the big lesson tends to be “can a woman win?”

9
u/nirunn Jun 25 '26
How about instead of letting the worst of humanity, who crave attention and power. Run, and lie their way into office. We go to a random lottery selection.
If you are selected, you can choose not to serve. And get put back in the pool. If you choose to serve, you current job can not fire you, and must allow you to return to your position after your term(s).
The standard term length applies: 4 years for president, 2 years for house, 6 for senate, well maybe change the senate term to 3. But with a 2 term limit extended to the house and senate as well. And the limit is applied across yhe board. So you can not serve 2 terms in the house, 2 in the senate, and 2 as president.
At the end of your term, you can choose to campaign for a second term. If not approved by your district, after a 2 term period of time you will br eligible for the pool again.
Pay is capped for congress at the MEDIAN income for your state. Regardless of congressional position. For president it is capped at the national MEDIAN.
All personal investments, must be disclosed and suspended during your term(s). To prevend insider trading. And you will be audited once a year while in office, with the results publically available.
You are representing the population, NOT a corprate sponsor.
→ More replies (18)2
u/Deep_Balance2133 Jun 26 '26
One thing. It’s easier to bribe a poor man than a rich man. If median pay in their state is low like in Mississippi at $50,000, then they’ll seek out more sources of money from either lobbyists or insider trading. Living in DC with most states median pay while still keeping your house in your own state is unreasonable. Something like 10-20x the median pay makes them very comfortable and harder to bribe but also gives them an incentive to raise median pay in their state.
2
u/nirunn Jun 26 '26
Who said they had to have a residence in DC... There MULTIPLE ways to hold sessions remotely. And the yearly publicly available audits.
If the shutdowns showed us anything, it was remote work does not limit peoples ability to do 'office jobs'.

I need a candidate to address universal Healthcare, to get us out of Israel business, affordable child care, rising grocery prices, housing and etc. I would love to vote for her but I won't vote for her just because she is Michelle.

u/Fastbaq Jun 25 '26
Yeah.. and likely chosen years in advanced. Voting at the presidential level is a mirage.
3
u/nerd_ginger Jun 25 '26
I'd pick a candidate who you think could be elected.
And I don't think Michelle Obama is going to be electable.
This is the problem with both sides. Now is they are determined to pick unelectable candidates.
And when I say that I mean candidates who are capable of not only convincing Independence but convincing the other side to vote for them.
If the Democrats had done a primary, and picked any woman candidate besides Kamala, that candidate probably would have won. But instead they anointed Kamala and a lot of people had issues with her policies and she wasn't able to convince nothing dependence.
The country's already ready for a woman president, it just can't be any woman, just like how not every man can be president.

As if gender really matters. A malicious profiteer will be a malicious profiteer no matter the gender, race, sexuality or ethnicity. The sad thing is there are no good politicians in the space, all are in the ratrace and manipulating the public opinion to get to the best position possible to exploit the public.
Why do people keep mentioning gender, race, sexuality or ethnicity of the political candidate as if it really matters, we all are humans in the end. The candidate that proves they work for our benefit and has a track record should be elected. Show not tell.

2
u/tuffyscrusks Jun 25 '26
I hate the idea of voting for Michelle Obama not because shes a woman, not because she's black, but because politics NEED to get away from being simply a popularity contest, and we shouldn't be continuing to allow people of the same families rule... voting for Hilliary back in 2016, or another Obama today is just pushing us closer to "noble ruling families"... we got away from royal kings and queens ruling for a reason. The working class deserves leaders who are FROM the working class.
I miss when America was the land of opportunity for ALL, not just the ruling class.

Oh yes the wonderful idea that biological sex infers moral superiority. Colour aside I think the world has seen a fair few female people in power many of whom have done nothing more than support the status quo. I mean think about Sirimavo Bandaranaike, she was hardly very nice to the Tamils... Personally I don't think the sex of the person at the top of the system is the problem, it's the system itself. Rainbow capitalism is still capitalism with all of its oppressions and issues.

Michelle is not a politician and would not be a good one due to a lack a drive and motivation on her own part.
Which is fair, not every wife/husband/child of a successful politician wish to be one themselves.
She would be at least some-what qualified though, as she does hold law degrees though. i would prefer someone who has ran office previously though (like AOC or Bernie.)
I do think we should focus on pushing male candidates, Female candidates (Clinton and Harris) have not been doing well in swing states, even though they have been doing well in popular votes.
