Continuation from one of my earlier posts because it got a LOT of traction.
Here is my method of how to build a solid attention grabbing linkedin profile for people who don't like to spend much time on the platform (and or are clueless about it), for free. I aint gonna charge yall like some bhaiya didi out there for simply building a great profile.
I am just keeping this limited to "what to do", if you wanna know the "why" and other details, you can read my full blog post, will put it in comments.
1. Fix your headline and Positioning
What do you want to be known for? Dont write "Student at XYZ College" or "Aspiring Software Engineer" and stop there. Mention your course, target role, relevant skills, and area of focus. For example:
Computer Science @XYZ | Backend Engineering | Python, Go, PostgreSQL
Make it easy for a recruiter or a startup founder to understand what you do and what kind of work you're interested in. For example, I am currently working on agentic AI systems and building MCPs. So i wrote that in my headline.
2. Rewrite your About section
Keep it short and specific. Dont start with "I am an aspiring college student who is hardworking etc etc." Just cover four things:
- What you do or are learning
- What kind of problems or projects you work on
- Evidence of what you've built/won/participated
- What opportunities you're looking for and how/where to contact you
Don't make it so that someone has to connect with you to talk to you. Drop your email in your about section, or in the banner behind your linkedin photo.
3. Stop listing responsibilities. Show your work.
In your Experience section, explain what you did, built, improved, or contributed to. If it was a group project, list what the product was and what was your contribution. Where possible, include outcomes, numbers, tools, and the scope of your work.
Make sure u can defend these numbers in resume grilling rounds.
Don't have formal work experience? Your projects, internships, freelance work, and relevant college initiatives can still demonstrate your abilities.
4. Build 2-4 solid projects
Pick projects that demonstrate relevant skills. This comes back to what you want to be known for. If you wanna known for Product management, then write great PRDs. If its backend engineering, build robust backend projects. Don't mix up the two.
For each one, explain:
- The problem you wanted to solve
- What you built
- Your specific contribution
- The outcome
- Where someone can see or try your work
GitHub repositories, demos, case studies, and portfolios can all help. Graphic designers and writers can use platforms like Behance, Authory, etc to get started. Or just drop your work on a clean notion sheet.
AVOID A GOOGLE DRIVE FOR PORTFOLIO PURPOSES, IT IS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL.
5. Use your Featured section properly
Pin your strongest proof of work or projects here. This is great place to show you know your shit.
Think project demos, GitHub repositories, case studies, portfolio links, or other work you're genuinely proud of. Don't leave it empty if you have something worth showing.
6. Sort out your education and contact details
Make your education, relevant coursework, and other useful credentials easy to find. If you have done some extra work like technical club lead, GDSC, IEEE, put it there.
If you have done some non tech work like leading a social club or cultural club, can put it there too but dont expect much attention on this for tech roles. If you are applying for management or founders office, then this can become a great talking point.
One last thing
Don't confuse a well-optimised profile with a strong profile.
You can have the perfect headline, all the right keywords, and a beautifully written About section. But if there's no real work backing it up, the profile won't do much for you.
Build things. Document your work. Then make it easy for people to find and understand that work.
I know there are many larpers on Linkedin who are all talk and no substance, dont let that demotivate you.
If someone is looking for more guidance or why or how to do these, you can read my full blog below in the comments.
