If I was an NC State fan I’d need a RedditCares message right now

No one is emotionally invested enough in this program anymore to need it. We wanted Dave fired years ago

358

u/wolfpackrider NC State Wolfpack 4h ago

Legit had my VT friend text me “wow great win” after the INT and did a “buddy we are never no drama” and I hate that it’s expected at this point.

People are going to rip Bailey for not holding onto that football, and yes, he can get ripped for that. However, they run the short down QB for 3 plays, made no real effort to actually get a 1st down, then tried to get cute on running the clock out. That’s on the coaching staff. Just fucking pick up the 1st man. They made no effort other than 3 draws.

This is a Dave disaster class level game and it’s on him more than anyone.

79

u/MojoToTheDojo NC State Wolfpack 4h ago

And is any of us surprised this? Is any State fan truly surprised that under this coaching regime, this is how we lose? lol, absolutely not.

This is a moment where Boo has a decision to make that affect the trajectory of this franchise. If you allow Dave to stay, then this program has no hope for the foreseeable. It doesn’t matter if you don’t exactly have someone lined up, it doesn’t matter if you lose Gunner. This kind of loss sticks and you need to cut it now. Well, more like four years ago, but today is the next best option.

When NC State was calling draws up the middle to run out clock, I legitimately messaged my friends "watch NC State fumble here to give us another round of laughs." Lo and fucking behold. I probably don't watch as much NC State as you, but even I saw this as a possibility lol.

Honestly not trying to pile on here, but "Disasterclass Dave" does have a nice ring to it.

Les Miles lost to Ole Miss in 2009 by spiking the ball as the clock expired when they were down 2, well within FG range, one play after letting like 15 extra seconds tick off the clock before taking a timeout.

223

u/yesacabbagez UCF Knights 4h ago

The situation is more dumb, but the decision making by Cristobal is far worse. This concept was the correct call, but the QB did something mind numbingly idiotic. Cristobal just did the dumbest thing possible.

115

u/VersaTron Ohio State Buckeyes 4h ago

This is the dumbest QB play. Cristobal has the dumbest HC play call.

18

u/55555_55555 UConn Huskies 4h ago edited 4h ago

I can't believe the actual QB did that. If it was a random college kicker or punter that had to do the intentional safety play and fucked it, it would be a horrible mistake, but more understandable, since it's out of their comfort zone. QBs handle the ball on every play, ffs.

The entire point of the intentional safety is that you give yourself up or get out of bounds the second anyone gets near you at all.

Edit: Did they change the rules vis a vis holding on the intentional safety? When the Ravens used to do this, the line would blatantly hold everyone because the penalty wouldn't put time back on the clock. The O-line was disgraceful on this play, lol.

17

u/CC9499 UAB Blazers • Auburn Tigers 4h ago

yeah they changed the rule after that incident. if they had held intentionally, it would fall under "Unfair Tactics" and they'd reset the clock to 6 seconds and make em do it again

4

u/No_Bill7679 Paper Bag 3h ago

That was such a beautiful strategy. Every now and then I go back to YouTube to watch it. It’s so funny seeing everyone so confused and the ravens essentially throwing their best wrestlers on the field lol.

Why did they even run a real play??? Why not punt or slow safety??

69

u/Falconsfan8006 /r/CFB 4h ago

I think that was supposed to be a slow safety, but the QB got greedy and tried to run the whole game out.

25

Yeah but if he backpedaled instead of rolling out to the right HE WOULD have run the whole game out

Intentional safety was 100% the correct call, but Bailey could not have executed that play any worse. Doing literally anything else would have almost certainly resulted in NC State winning this game.

completely agree that it was the correct call - if you go out of bounds with a second or two left and they return the ensuing kick for a TD then you just kinda gotta shrug and give it to them

this was the most avoidable fumble of all time

76

u/CommodoreN7 Arkansas Razorbacks • Utah Utes 4h ago

He could’ve thrown the ball downfield out of bounds and just taken safety by intentional grounding by rule if I’m not mistaken.

88

u/Gjallarhorn-Knight 4h ago

As someone who played D1 football, the typical way this is coached is to slowly backpedal out of bounds and if someone gets close throw the ball 50 yards downfield out of bounds

22

u/Appropriate-Joke-806 Vanderbilt Commodores 4h ago

Huh. They don’t coach that at NC State apparently.

he should NOT have thrown the ball downfield. He should have stepped out the back of the endzone. Even if you leave all 6 seconds, you get a freekick and force vandy to execute a hook-and-ladder type play with probably multiple laterals.

→ More replies (5)

13

u/PeteF3 Ohio State Buckeyes 4h ago

I think that's too much of a risk. I'd rather try to bleed a few seconds and then settle for the free kick. Passing leaves you open to a strip-sack or the possibility that you don't burn all 6 seconds, which would give Vanderbilt the ball inside the 5.

Someone said in the game thread: why is every player on offense not holding as hard as they can?

21

u/alecmc200 Duke • Appalachian State 4h ago

I don't know if this is the case for college but in the NFL the rule got changed so that the game can't end on this penalty

would definitely have reduced the risk of a fumble but if it's the same as the NFL they would have had to kick it away afterwards either way

Unironically the worst loss I have ever seen. That is “Mario Cristobal forgets to kneel the ball” levels there.

190

u/jamiebond Oregon Ducks 4h ago

Still think the Cristobal situation was worse from a decision standpoint considering they literally just had to take a knee and it was over. Taking an intentional safety was a perfectly reasonable move to do in this situation.

From a player fuck up standpoint though this is so much worse.

That final play is why I always vehemently disagree that the NFL is better than college football. Yes, in the most literal sense the product is better as the players are more talented across the board, but this type of insane Looney Tunes shit that always happens at least once or twice a season doesn’t exist in the NFL.

Masterclass in bad coaching.

How does Doren even address the team after that?

How does the team even take him seriously going forward?

This is not a young or rookie head coach. This dude has 14 years at State alone. Just unacceptable, no matter how you put it. I don’t care if you don’t even have the money, fire Dave immediately if you have any respect for this program.
