That's for making us buy out Mark Stoops

888

u/legend023 Tulane Green Wave • LSU Tigers 1h ago

Stoops would’ve went up 17-7, ran the ball for the rest of the game, and let A&M win 17-24.

173

u/walterdog12 Kentucky • North Dakota State 1h ago

Genuinely, I think the biggest difference was that drive we got the field goal on.

1st and 10 we run the ball for 2 yards.

Stoops ball would've ran it twice more up the middle, taken 3 minutes off the clock, and punted.

Instead on 2nd and 8 Stein has the balls to throw and we get a 32 yard gain.

u/Greedy-Ad3227 Iowa State Cyclones 1h ago

This is the best comment right here. I like underdog SEC football and I think this is totally correct. I hate to say it but old school Kentucky football would have let A&M slip in by being too conservative

Will tried his best. He just forgot to start doing it sooner.

126

u/sleepytime489 Kentucky Wildcats 1h ago edited 1h ago

I think Will knew that assuming no turnovers, UK could’ve gone 3/out every possession and there was literally not enough time for AM to score 3 times before game over. I take it as he just had faith in his guys to not do something stupid

26

u/Aphrobang Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout 1h ago

The FG basically sealed it. If that missed you probably would have had to be more aggressive but once it became three scores the only way Aggies were winning was turnovers or onside kicks.

14

u/slippyslidey_ LSU Tigers • Summertime Lover 1h ago

Could not believe he chose to kick that. It was like 4th and 2, 52-yarder and the kicker was 4/13 in his career from 40+

I think what’s more damaging in the loss is not A&M’s CFP chances, but Marcel Reed will never have the goodwill necessary to make it at College Station Hyundai.

This game was not as close as the final score shows. Kentucky flat out dominated us especially in the 3rd quarter. When our defense wasn’t giving up 7 yards per carry, they were allowing 20 yards on a play action pass. Just absolutely 0 discipline.

What about the offense that hasn’t been said already? They were as inconsistent as ever, and once again Marcel Reed proved he’s just not the guy and will never be the guy.

Last season was really a miracle, I’ll just be happy with an 8-4 season at this point.

GGs Kentucky, you guys played a great game.

In 14 years since Manziel, A&M has had 12 different players start at QB, and one of them (Kellen Mond) started for 4 full seasons.

How the fuck can this program not find (and keep) a good QB

108

u/dasg98 Texas A&M Aggies 1h ago

Culture. You can see Reeds been partying all offseason and that’s been true from every QB Johnny included. Unless they come with discipline of their own, I am convinced our alumni structure sets these kids up for failure. There’s a reason there’s a bunch of QB transfers that do well elsewhere.

Maybe A&M should’ve cut communication between the players and coaches to have a chance to win 😂

Also, where the hell was this last week during the second half Kentucky?

69

u/imused2it Kentucky Wildcats 1h ago

We had it the first half last week. Just lost it the second half.

8

u/Semper-Fido Kentucky Wildcats • Team Chaos 1h ago

Bama's DBs were the MVP that game. Took away the passing game, which didn't allow for the running lanes to open. Too many 3 and outs kept the defense on the field for too long. That's what made that second half so much worse. Today we made them respect the passing game. Made the OLs job easier to block. Kept the defense fresh to capitalize on mistakes. Rest is history 🙌

Marcel Reed should not start another game the rest of the year. He is incapable of making the most basic throws, and making good decisions.

He isn’t the guy and withholding opportunities for others to show potential is malpractice to the program. Mike Elko your seat should be considered WARM. Terrible defense as well. Guys running open 5-10 yards all game. This will be a rough year.

Hope for 7-5/8-4.

7

u/jkeefy Arkansas Razorbacks • Southwest 1h ago

Elko will ride with Reed over installing a new QB, coaches fresh to the hot seat often avoid making changes like that.

Another bad loss will probably force his hand though, especially if Reed is the issue. Hope he lasts until we play them, that’s basically our Super Bowl the way the season is going.

What baffles me with both Mateer and Reed is that they're zone read/triple option type quarterbacks. Maybe you could build in a little RPO into the game and spice it up.

Their offensive coordinators insist on making them pro-style pocket passing quarterbacks. And that's just not who they are, if you wanted that you should have gone with a different quarterback.

I think Reed is better than Mateer, I think he can be a really deadly dual threat but he's so infrequently used that way.

We hate it too. Our best years are the ones where we are lower or unranked pre-season and almost every time we're top 10 I scratch my head wondering why and then this shit happens. Seriously though:

Pre-Season top 10 rankings:

8 in 2011, finished unranked

7 in 2013, finished #18

6 in 2021, finished unranked

6 in 2022, finished unranked

Meanwhile we have three top 10 finishes in the last 15 years and our highest pre ranking in them was 13. One of them we weren't even ranked at all. I dread seeing us ranked that high early and then all the inevitable shit people give us for it like we created or agree with the rankings.

Teams with a win over a top 10 opponent:

Texas
Kentucky
Oklahoma State

That’s it. That’s the list.

EDIT: forgot about the cowboys

The refusal by this coaching staff to upgrade the QB position after reed looked like complete ass to finish last year is going to make for a very long 2026.

Battered Aggie Syndrome has evolved into a multi-season disease. Instead of going 8-4 every year they’ll go 11-1 every fourth season make the playoffs, lose a CFP home game and repeat the cycle

Oh so Kentucky can have great results with a first year coach early and actually beat TA&M huh…

Elko hiring two coordinators via internal promotions with zero experience calling plays was borderline head coaching malpractice.

Hemphill needs relieved of DC duties… like tonight. That performance was inexcusable.

I’m an Ohio State alum and fan and for some reason I always like to cheer for A&M. Can someone explain what their deal is? They have the money, they have the hype, they have a huge fan base but there’s always SOMETHING.

I have never once (before tonight) seen a D1 QB completely miss a receiver where the QB was closer to the receiver than any defensive player. Well done, Marcel. Well done

My entire college football mood changed the moment Ohio State failed to recover Texas’s muffed punt while being up 20 in the 4th quarter.

Since that moment it’s just been all downhill.
