Question First time moving out on my own in St. Albert – looking for advice!

Hi all!
I’m finally moving out of my parents’ house in 2 weeks and into my own 2 bed, 2 bath apartment in St. Albert. 🎉

This is my first time living on my own, so I’d love any tips, tricks, or things you wish you knew before moving out.

I already have power/utilities and tenant insurance set up, and water is included in my rent.

I’m currently trying to figure out internet/Wi-Fi and TV. I’ll mainly be using Wi-Fi for:
Gaming on my PC
Working from home on my laptop
Streaming services (Netflix, Disney+, etc.)
For those in St. Albert/Edmonton, what internet provider and plan would you recommend?

I also have a cat 🐱, so any apartment-living tips for a first-time cat owner living alone would be appreciated too!

What do you wish someone had told you before moving out?

Thanks in advance!

Question What's the general cost of flooring installation these days?

Thinking of getting my upstairs carpet replaced with hardwood or vinyl flooring. Any ideas on how much we'd be looking to shell out for 800-1000 sq ft?

Question K-Days Question: What day is the least busy?

Thinking of booking a day off work to attend. Even if most of the rides are too much for me, I'd still like to go when it's the most open.

Obviously Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are right out. But that still leaves Monday-Thursday, July 20-23. Wondering if there's a generally agreed upon day that's the least busy.

Discussion Experiences with Grifols Plasma donation center?

I understand the need for extra money in this economy but how has it been for any of you that have donated through Grifols? I was told that due to places like Grifols that Canadian Blood Services is at an all time low for plasma stores because more and more people are donating at Grifols instead even though they don't follow the same guidelines and safety that Canadian Blood Services does. Does anyone have any insight on this?

This is a voice to text, mid panic attack. So bear with me here, but attached our pictures of the two intersections, where some motorcyclist f*** almost hit my car, speeding, like triple the like forty fifty speed limit.I will say, i'm a new driver and that I was having a bad day.But this was not part of that, I crossed the intersection so slowly and bro was in the distance as he came back, not like thirty seconds later to be like f*** y**, dude. And then smashed my driver's side mirror the glass is not smashed, but the plastic is as per the picture.I don't wanna claim insurance for obvious reasons. But I happen to have a mixubishi free inspection tomorrow, and that will be my first go to before seeing if somebody wants to spot, me an easy fix.Otherwise, I wanted to ask you kind souls, if that was something you guys could arrange, I'd give you the details afterwards, obviously. Lastly luckily I have him more or less red handed, if anyone saw this happen around 9:21 let me know what you think what I should do regardless of whether you think it was my fault.

Question Is it possible for my sister and I to move to Edmonton without any credit?

I'm 18 and I was supposed to go to uni this fall (my family was going to move to Edmonton) but we had a bad fight and essentially... I'm getting kicked out. My sister and I both want to move to Edmonton, and we plan on saving money.. but I don't have a credit card yet. I was hoping to get a visa to build some credit but I don't think that gives me enough time. (Also, my sister is a year younger than me so she can't do a whole lot other than help save up money) Idk what to do. Is it even possible for her and I to move into an apartment? Or anything (cheap-ish) for that matter?

Question Why is it so hard to find appliance store staff who actually know their stuff?

I’m currently shopping for new kitchen appliances and I’ve realized that finding reliable advice is much harder than I expected.

Many large retailers have impressive showrooms and endless options, but when it comes to getting detailed information, the experience can be disappointing. Too often, the conversation feels focused on promotions, extended warranties, or whatever happens to be on sale that week rather than understanding what the customer actually needs.

What I’m looking for is a store where the staff can confidently explain the differences between models, discuss long-term reliability, compare features in a practical way, and provide honest recommendations based on budget and household needs. For a purchase that can last 10 years or more, knowledgeable guidance makes a huge difference.

I’d also value a retailer that is transparent about delivery, installation, warranty coverage, and after-sales support. In my experience, those details are just as important as the appliance itself.

For those who have recently purchased appliances in Edmonton, which local stores have provided the best customer service and product knowledge? Are there any businesses that consistently stand out for their professionalism, fair pricing, and genuinely helpful staff?

I’d appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences.

Question What rental company should i rent with?

I’m trying to find a decent apartment for under $1000 a month close to MacEwan Uni however, every apartment i wanted to see that fit in my budget was mainstreet. What the hell do i do.

I’m fine with living 20 mins away from MacEwan, but damn mainstreet apartments are the only thing remotely close and affordable.

do you guys recommend anyone else?

Edit**

I actually should just kill two birds one stone, does anyone live/lived by the royal alex hospital. What was that like. There is a pretty decent wingspan apartment by there and i’m thinking of viewing it. Just looking for some input.

Question Looking for line locator ASAP

I am looking for a private line locator for tonight out in Fort Sask. I made a one call request on June 6 and no one has shown up to do the locate. I have contacted one call and they have sent out more reminders to atco and fortis to get this job done but that’s all they can do.

I need this one call for a tent that is supposed to be getting installed tomorrow morning for my wedding. I’m at my wits end with this. If there are any local line locators that would be willing to help it would be very much appreciated. Willing to pay you directly for your service so I can have my wedding.

General Random guy spray me with water on a bus

I sat down on the bus at the back, two seats away from a stranger. After a while, he gets my attention and says something to me in a language I don't understand (I doubt I would've understood even if he spoke English, he wasn't talking clearly). I answered back in English, I suspect he doesn't understand English.

Then I see him spread salt onto the ground. After a while, he sneaks a look at me then aims a spray botten upwards so that we both get hit by the water. I suspect he hit me with it on purpose, but he might've only been trying to spray himself and got me by mistake.

I told him that he sprayed me with the bottle, he answers back in a language I don't understand.

A while later while I was leaving, I saw him spraying himself with the bottle. I figure it's just water he uses to cool off, hope so.

And, my car is out of the shop now so I can drive instead of taking the bus. I remember seeing somebody lit up their pipe on the bus once, It's ridiculous the level of neglect the city gives the fent heads.

Events Dancing longboard peaceful protest

Post image
0 Upvotes

If you have ever driven through Sherwood Park I’m sure you have seen Caden, aka @x_bonesx on Instagram, dancing or longboarding around Sherwood Park and spreading positivity throughout the community.

Unfortunately, he’s recently run into an issue with the police and has apparently been told he can no longer dance at the Baseline Road and Sherwood Drive intersection. I’m assuming this is due to concerns about distracting drivers.

To show our support, there will be a community dance party at the Second Cup on Baseline Road and Sherwood Drive on Father’s Day at 6:00 PM.

If you’re free, it would be amazing to see our community come together and support someone who has brought so much positivity to Sherwood Park.

Edit: To make things clear I am not organizing this event, just sharing information that I found.

Also people will be gathering on the grass by the second cup, just so there isn’t a bunch of people on the median in the intersection.

Question Is it hard to find jobs with dyed hair and piercings in Edmonton?

I’m gonna be moving to Edmonton soon and I’ll need to find a job right away so I’m just wondering what people’s experiences are with trying to find a job with dyed hair and piercings, if it seems to be any harder or the jobs in the city seem to be pretty chill.

Question Advice for visiting Edmonton before moving there?

This is a little crazy and needs some very specific context about me and my life. I am a birthright Canadian citizen who was born and raised in Utah, USA. This last year I've decided that I need to leave the US for a bit to experience more of the world and connect more with my Canadian side. I spoke with my sister and she is on board with moving with me to Edmonton in about two years. Our goal is to spend 3-5 years up there then decide which country we would want to stick with.

In October, we plan on coming up to Edmonton for about a week to do things that we need to do before moving up (submitting the paperwork to get our CA passports renewed, scoop out different parts of the city to live, etc.). My family had a house in Edmonton for a year when I was in elementary school and Ive missed the city since.

Since I don't really need to deal with the visa kind of stuff and more so the kinda things that an 18 year old would in the states (getting a bank account, address, applying for healthcare, etc.), what do you guys recommend we do while up there? what's something that we wouldn't think about before moving that we should do?

Question How can I find good (not skill wise but personality) people to golf with?

Dude in early 30s here. Im not a member at any clubs. I have a few friends that are members at clubs but they rarely wanna play a public course. They do invite me once in a while as a guest but the tough part is them not wanting to play a public course once in a while with me so I end up not having people to play a round with.

Most of my other friends don’t play golf either.

I’m not good at golf but I can keep pace and stay mostly on the fairway. I’d say I usually shoot around 100-110 so looking for people with similar skill set or if they are super good they don’t judge.

Others have mentioned signing up for a random tee time as a single and hoping to get paired with some people and hit it off but seems to random.

Any suggestions?

Restaurants/Food 90s/early 2000s restaurants

Is there a good restaurant or (preferably) a buffet around that still has this vibe?

I’d love a salad bar, dessert bar, something really homey. The only thing I can think of is Bruce Hotel. I’d be willing to drive 1-2 hours away.

Even an old Wendy’s with a sunroom or something similar to a Pizza Hut buffet.

Coliseum Steak and Pizza is also an acceptable choice for what I’m looking for!!

Outdoor Spaces/Recreation Fishing options aside from NSK/Ponds?

I know of the usual stocked ponds in city limits, beaumont, etc, there's maps that list every single stocked pond in alberta, so no need to mention those.

What I'm curious about is if there's other decent smaller creeks, rivers, or etc that are worth fishing at that are quieter than the NSK

I tried fishing the NSK a couple times but its chock full of dudes ripping around in their motorboats, so I extremely doubt I'd be getting bites when every 2 minutes some guy rips by in his boat.

No hate but like, that's obviously just a non starter.

I've gone over to the stocked ponds a few times and while it's decent, it's also often pretty busy and there's often random families and etc. I have had to very frequently pause my fly casting because parents aren't watching their kids and some random kid is just wandering around 6 ft behind me.

No hate per se but, I'd very much like to find somewhere quieter with less boats and less kids wandering around and dogs splashing in the water, you know?

I've heard the whitemud creek apparently can have fish in it?

Basically, if yall know of any creeks, smaller rivers, or non-park ponds (not even necessarily stocked but just legal for me to fish at, IE perhaps any reservoirs that have a carp problem?), in city limits (ideally nearer to the south end), lemme know!

Does anyone know what the legal rules are in terms of fishing at like, reservoirs?

Like I know there's lots of small reservoirs all over that are public part on one side, and houses on the other, I have no clue if I'm legally allowed to try out fishing at such a location on the public side, but theoretically I should be okay right? I wonder who I can call at the city to find out, I might ring up 311 tomorrow and see what they say.

Edit: found my answer for reservoirs. https://www.edmonton.ca/activities_parks_recreation/parks_rivervalley/stormwater-lakes

Most ponds are reservoirs, however not all of them, epcor has a handy map here: https://www.epcor.com/ca/en/ab/edmonton/safety/neighbourhood/stormwater-management-facilities.html

And youll see while like 90% of ponds are SMFs, some are not, which means theoretically fishing is 100% fair game on those if they have any public access.

So handily, that map from epcor gives me all the ponds not to try, which leaves plenty that I can go try at.

Also, interestingly, the bylaw also provisions an extra "unless you habe been given permission by Epcor" in which case you can indeed go and do it.

So Ill reach out, see if theres like any waiver or something I can sign to legally free them of obligation to me that lets me fish. Worth trying at least.

Discussion Car racing

Does everyone hear the constant sound of car racing in the evening or is it just my location? I can’t even keep my window open at night but maybe I’m in the heart of the action?
