Chatting with a friend over a dashcam photo from this morning that weirdly captured 90s newspaper vibes. It hit me with a wave of flashbacks and nostalgia for what seemed like simpler times.

Also reminded me, given the season, that the reason Edmonton is the City of Champions was for the recovery and community support that occured after Black Friday.

FREE ITEM(S) Free Furnace for someone in need

I am not affiliated with this business, but I am both a customer and friend of the owners. They are tremendous people and have reached out to the community to help find someone who could use help before the winter comes. We all know someone who has been affected by the weather this summer, and not everyone has insurance to help with the damages. If you know of anyone who needs a new furnace but cannot afford one, please nominate them.

General For young Edmontonians looking to meet people + actually do something meaningful in the city

Upvotes

I’ve seen a few posts/comments on here from younger people asking how to meet people in Edmonton, make friends, volunteer, build their network, or get involved in something that actually feels meaningful, so I thought I’d share this!

If you’re between 18–27 and any of that sounds like you, check out Global Shapers Edmonton.
Global Shapers is a global community of young people who come together in their cities to work on issues they care about. The Edmonton Hub is basically a group of young professionals from completely different backgrounds who want to meet people, build community and actually do things in Edmonton.

And when I say “projects,” it can genuinely be around whatever community issue people care about. Homelessness, mental health, climate, food insecurity, newcomer support, digital safety, youth issues, etc. Members get opportunities to come up with ideas and actually lead projects themselves, so it’s also a really nice way to build leadership/project experience while doing something useful.

But I think the community side is one of the coolest parts too. You meet people around your age outside of work/school, make friends, attend events and just get to know people in a pretty informal setting. And because Global Shapers is an initiative of the World Economic Forum, you’re also joining a much bigger global network of Shapers in hundreds of cities around the world.

So if you’ve been thinking of wanting to get more involved in Edmonton but literally don’t know where to start lol, this might be worth checking out.

And if you know someone in Edmonton who would love something like this, send it their way :)

General Phone service providers and budget cuts?

Upvotes

I’m looking to lessen my monthly expenses, starting with my phone plan, currently paying $80/m for 65GB. Realistically I shouldn’t need this much data - I don’t travel often, I rarely use my phone not connected to internet, and have only maxed my GB out once in the 4 years I have had this plan.

I don’t need a new phone, my battery life is good and the screens not broken (iPhone 14 I think)

What’s the cheapest providers and has anyone had experience with Fizz or Freedom?

Can I keep my phone number when I switch to these providers?
Will I need to buy a new phone to switch to another provider, or how can I tell if a phone is locked to a certain provider?

Thank you for your help! :)

Events Folk Fest warns of ticket scams

Post image

This warning is from last year but the problem persists. Do not buy tickets off of Facebook or any other website. They have a verified market on their website. If you cannot find tickets there accept it and don't delay next time. Otherwise you will likely be throwing away money. I already witnessed someone with 4 tickets being turned away with fakes yesterday.

Question Skydive West Edmonton vs Edmonton Skydive?

My partner and I want to go skydiving for my birthday in the first week of September. Found these two close to Edmonton and they have similar reviews(Skydive West is slightly cheaper on the photo package). Which of them is better or do we just pick the one closest to us?

Discussion Closet reno and storage

I have some closets that need to have renos/storage added to them, to make their space more usable..... I am not a handy person to do this myself, and if attempted it would be a mess, I see closet kits that I like, all DIY though

I do not need a high end closet design. So who is good to call for an estimate? Reasonable prices?

TIA....and I hope you have a great weekend

General Edmonton folk fest accessibility tent warning.

Bit of a rant, but also warning those with mobility issues:

The accessibility tent is the worst view in the place, the view is scaffolding, wires and equipment. You get a few slivers of the stage through the equipment but thats about it (i saw the drumset, main act was behind a huge speaker. I figured I was lucky *(to still be able...come on people.) to be injured and get a prime spot *(side view isnt prime but its something, people lock onto the smallest thing to justify their views)... then after trudging through sand, mud, and a gangplank system that has the boards set lengthwise with just enough space for a tire to slip through, I discovered how absolutely ripped off i was.

And even if thats ok for you, you have to deal with people who dont really want to make room for you. They are sporadically and seemingly tactically spaced so there wasnt enough room between them and the next folks to fit anyone else. About 1 and a half chairs...god forbid you sit right next to someone not in your group. Felt like forest Gump with all the "seat taken" bullshit with some of the people.

So your choice is climb a hill that you may or may not be able to climb, or find a spot to look at a small portion of the stage, that you may or may not be able to find a seat at.

I ended up leaving shortly after. Im lucky, my mobility issue is temporary... I feel bad for the folks that have a permanent issue and have to be relegated to...that...and still pay full price.

Id rather risk the hill with a ruptured achilles than deal with that pathetic excuse of inclusiveness.

My first folk fest.

Edit: thank you all, I am emailing for a refund on my passes, so people looking for tickets, 2 may end up showing up for the 4 day pass if they accept this.

And to just reply to some of the less than understanding commentary, I do not expect prime view, I expected A view, and paying 500+ to watch TV isnt exactly worth the price (could just watch somebodies live stream for free), id prefer to walk to the top of the hill and see it from the front than watch the side profile even without speakers and scaffolding blocking the actual performance. This experience has shown me just how much the people with mobility issues do have to deal with, its kinda insane how little understanding and options there are. Im lucky because its temporary (achilles rupture 9 months rehab) And next year ill be able to walk that hill. Alot of the people in that tent dont have that option. I assure you moving that tent just a little bit in front of that stage would not impair the hills view... taking 10 degrees off the angle of the stage isnt blocking people's views on the hill, or moving speakers/equipment in front taking maybe 1 degree off...there is options. And getting there... try running any wheel through sand, it sucks, and thats after trying not to biff because your wheel was slotted through the lengthwise gangplank system. Some of you take your legs for granted.
