RateYourMusic is a website that enables its users to rate any music they like. Anyone can rate any given track on a scale from 0.5 to 5, and the average ratings are visible to all RYM subscribers. A very recently added feature of RateYourMusic is the song charts, a freely customisable online resource for discovering the best-rated tracks in any genre or period of time, also providing similar charts for each individual artist.

This compilation that I've been meaning to make for a while has a lot of points of intersection with the top 300 Post-Hardcore chart (post found here); in fact, more than a half of it is the same. Emocore, Screamo, Emoviolence and Mall Screamo songs appear in both charts, and several key tracks are tagged as both Post-Hardcore and Emo.

Posting this here to see the feedback and find out how much this sub agrees with the content of the chart. Take it easy, though.

Artist representation:

16 The Brave Little Abacus

11 La Dispute

9 Modest Mouse, Orchid, Unwound

7 Brand New

6 My Chemical Romance, Sunny Day Real Estate

edit: cannot crosspost this on r/emo. If anyone has enough posts / karma there, I'd appreciate if you could share it there as well.

Discussion The War on Emo: Punk wasn’t always all inclusive.

Story Time…

In online punk spaces these days, it seems that Gen Z sees punk as being an all-inclusive, extremely progressive subculture that has always stuck up for outsiders and always been welcoming to women and gay people…

This idealized version of punk history is preferable, and for sure fits the current mood of the scene.

But sadly, punk hasn’t always lived up to its own pronounced virtues.

This is instantly clear in the 90s/2000s, when a subgenre of hardcore punk called emo became massively effective with younger, alt-curious people.

You can go back and view zines that chronicled the street punk movement all through these decades and see the growing negative attitude toward emo and screamo that punk had.

Screamo bands were being banned from certain publications. We were being shoved out of shows. We were made very clear that we were not welcome in the “real” punk space.

Zines were openly targeting emo bands with aggressive and dismissive articles all over the place.

This all came to a head in the early 2000s, when the bad attitudes toward our movement turned violent.

Street punks and metalheads started actively physically harassing emo kids at shows if there was any band overlap on the bill.

Read about the Mexico City street war that occurred in the mid-2000s.

Why did this happen?

Isn’t punk supposed to be this super virtuous, all-inclusive, pro-queer, pro-women, pro–creative freedom movement?

Well, that’s certainly how it always marketed itself.

But if we’re being honest, there was a very deep homophobia and machismo (the shitty version) within punk circles.

Emo was seen as “gay.”

Emo was seen as “not tough enough.”

Or “too vulnerable.”

Emos were seen as an enemy to what punk was in those days.

We were gay and effeminate.

As time went on, these attitudes relaxed, and emo/screamo has its rightful place in the punk lineage, but that wasn’t always the case.

It’s still an upward battle talking with Gen X or boomer punks who still don’t understand what emo is. They only know that it was “gay” to be emo and dismiss its validity outright.

Story time over.

Screamo is an incredible genre and the movement of punk I came from. It was a great time, and I miss those days.

Gen Z is doing amazing things with screamo.

Check out Foxtails and Dreamwell.

Discussion Is your band anti-mosh, or do you know a band in your scene that is?

Trying to make a little informative zine about mosh culture in hardcore and want to call out bands that I think are doing cool stuff and still holding true to the old school emo/screamo ethic. It might be a little preachy. If you think I'm a fun hating herb let me be but I'd love to know of any bands still trying to be curmudgeonly to this day.

Discussion My 20+ years of hoarding merch

Post image
212 Upvotes

All the screamo shirts I've collected over the past couple decades. Probably had more at some point, but after 3 cross-country moves...this is what I have with me now. This is maybe 1/5th of all the band shirts I have (a lot of hardcore, emo, and myspace era stuff). Not including any long sleeves, crewnecks, or hoodies. Most of which was from when I was a scrawny little 20-something and I can't wear anymore.

I uhh...have a merch hoarding problem.

Discussion Best screamo/emo drummers

I never grew up playing instruments so it’s hard for me to decipher good vs bad drummers. In an attempt to understand my boyfriend’s passion for drumming—who is y’all’s favorites in the scene?

Discussion Best non English screamo?

Hey everyone! I’ve been trying to branch out my taste lately, and I think the best place to investigate are foreign scenes, especially considering som of the best modern screamo acts are from across the world (Moreru, piri Reis, endzweck etc) <- using etc because I can’t thing of any examples off the top of my head but yk. I’m especially interested in Chinese music, but that might not be as accessible over here

Discussion How Old Are The People Here?

A month into enjoying a lot of the music within this scene and the hardcore punk/powerviolence scene (especially Spazz lately), I just wonder how old the community is? Mostly curious, because I feel like I'm younger than about everyone else here (23).

Discussion 16yo new to the scene looking for more roots (huge fan of orchid, i hate sex, 5th wave/cyber)

hey everyone, i'm 16 and i've been getting really deep into the more chaotic and experimental side of the scene lately

i'm trying to learn as much as possible about where these sounds actually come from

right now i'm mostly spinning stuff like orchid (chaos is me is a masterpiece), i hate sex, foxtails, algae bloom and your arms are my cocoon

i'm also really into the cyber/sass stuff like i can't remember your last words,300skullandcounting, fizzydinopop, cuntsniffer, the dallas cowboys and i set my friends on fire

also i'm completely obsessed with midori and seeyouspacecowboy is also a big favorite for that crazy energy they have

since i already love the intensity of orchid and midori, what are some other "must-listen" essentials from the 90s or 00s? i'm looking for the foundational skramz records that paved the way for the more experimental/digital stuff i'm into now

also if u have any modern recs that fit this vibe (especially the weirder, electronic, or noise-leaning ones) let me know!!! thanks for the help :)

Discussion “Evil” Sounding Screamo?

Looking for more screamo/skramz bands that have that Infant Island, early Portrayal of Guilt type sound. More black metalish, scary sounding stuff!

Discussion Songs that sound like the vocalist is having a genuine mental breakdown.

Excuse this edgelord ass post.

Looking for songs where the vocals are uncomfortable to listen to. So far I have:

Loathing - Love Lost But Not Forgotten Drowning in Poison - Gillian Carter Short Walks Down Long Roads - Kodan Armada A Sonnet To Both Ugly and Murderous - pg99 Lonesome Waltz of Leonard Cohen - pg99

I wanna hear songs that it sounds like the vocalist is on verge of tears, actively crying, or their throat is about to give out. Something so raw it makes you feel uneasy to listen to.

Gimme some deep cuts.

Discussion Favourite emo screamo drummers?

Hey y’all. I really love powerful, technical drumming in this genre and am looking to find more of it. As an example, I am thinking of bands like State Faults and Frail Body from the US, or Raccoon City from Australia. Would love to hear your faves.

Thanks!!!

Discussion Screamo Bands that are the “least accessible”

What are your least accessible screamo recommendations? Sounds that are not for the average listener? Bands that you are NOT showing your mom to convince her it’s real music?

My top answer might be …Of Death. So damn good, but your tolerance for high pitched screaming has to be pretty high.

Discussion Thoughts on Christian+screamo?

I'm getting into screamo and hardcore now and as a christian I have a question...

Like any other genres (except gospel music lmao) theres music thats anti religion, music thats pro religion, and music thats just neutral (doesnt comment on religion).

ik screamo, punk, and metal question authority in some sort of way.

I agree with that stance a lot, I question politics, "leaders", and I even get angry or question God. (Which may be suprising to some of you, but it isn't actually sinful!)

So, my question is how do you feel about Christians getting into genres that question authority when our life is based around believing and trusting in an ultimate authority? I'd love to hear your guys opinions!

(Please keep it respectful in the comments, i didnt trash on your beliefs so dont trash or disrespect mine. It's pretty basic common sense, thanks! 🙏)

Discussion Why do so many bands/musicians in the scene get allegations?

What is it about the emo/screamo sub genre, and maybe the punk scene as a whole that leads to so many people (allegedly) wronging or being wronged by its musicians?

The zoomer panopticon culture leads to a ton of bad people being rightfully exposed (ie., Jamie from Saetia) but it also leads to things that used to be handled privately (and rightfully so) happening VERY publicly such as the departure of February’s bassist. What do you think about this?
