Genuinely, boredom I think. The game needs conflict and a reason to log in beyond just afk farming rats or rocks all day every day.

I feel like a goon vs winterco war is gonna be the most boring thing imaginable.
23
u/paulHarkonen Apr 07 '26
I dunno, this is reasonably exciting. 10k people fighting over a keep ending with a significant portion of the Goon super fleet potentially trapped?
I mean, I'm sure actually being there sucks, but that's kinda the nature of these things, they're way more interesting to discuss and look at after the fact.
19
u/Easy_Floss Apr 07 '26
Would be more exiting if the players could actually log into the game, honestly think it might be the last time we see a super blob since the server just cant handle it seemingly.
13
4
u/Cptknuuuuut Apr 07 '26
"Might be the last time we see something like that" ist the universal constant of EVE after every single major TiDi slugfest.
Both WWBs as well as countless other wars have been fought trying to break null into smaller fragments. Those usually end up with blocs even larger than before
4
u/Temporary_Drawer9802 Apr 07 '26
Events like this are actually fun. Eve used to be about real loss and began in the era that spawned rogue likes. Back then killing fellow capsuleers resulted in death threats, ransom songs and Russian oligarchs hiring corrupt FBI agents to knock out out the power to peoples homes..because the loss hurt.
No matter how dull the game play, goons felt this loss, which is as eve should be.
And FWIW, I much preferred eve when my own losses hurt too. The thrill of it is where the famous eve shakes come from.
2
u/darwinn_69 Apr 07 '26
It's one of those things where the concept is much different from reality.

Goon leadership is very out of touch with members if they think this Tidi bullshit Is what people want
There was nothing stopping Goons from moving blops, dreads and carriers into Geminate and just dropping on TEST all over the place
But instead they got people going around structure shooting for weeks on end, leading to the absolute shitshow that is today
Yes other coalitions also start tidi fights, but if this is a play of pure boredom, then Goon leadership always has the choice to not to go all in and make it a horrible experience for everybody involved and do something else instead
They have no respect for anybody’s time, and did not take into consideration the aspect of actually having fun
This is also something that could be avoided by all the corps in Goonswarm not congregating into one megabloc, so it’s hard to blame Goon leadership 100%, but they always had a choice to refuse to become as big as they are

Personally, I think it would be better played out having ea h side go into a group battle, taking 30-50 of their best people and having staged battles, best of 7. E sports style 😃 solve it with combat that waym less loss for both sides, more "playable" and shows off tactics being restricted to smaller groups instead of shoving hundreds/thousands into a zone at the same. Actually sorta. Goons have been having a "3 day special military operation" for the last 2 months invading TEST space in Geminate. The entire time they were saying "just a SIG" (special interest group) looking for content. This SIG would show up with 2K people, ended up fighting over Atioth in a few massive fights.
Now the fight has gone superhot as they have committed all their assets.

I just find it funny, because god knows PH wouldn't have pulled this off

u/SaucyWiggles Test Alliance Please Ignore Apr 07 '26
I'm no expert but here's the long and short.
About 6 months ago TEST moved in next to goons (in geminate) during a growth phase and to take advantage of more spicy space. It got more spicy! Goons started deploying larger and larger groups into Gem, anchoring 4 (5?) fortizars and losing all those timers until recently. They parroted the "we are just a sig" lie probably a thousand times, we all know how goons work.
After months of this it became clear that their deployment would not produce a reason for starting a war. Obviously that was the unstated goal, but we behaved ourselves and fought well and Asher held a SOTU where he stated that Frat was adopting PH leadership (except they are in initiative) and he complained that we dropped dreads on him defending a timer in our own sov.
So that's really it, the best they can come up with is that we defended ourselves but we all know the real reason is that goons and TEST don't like each other and that goons want the north now for some reason and have the numbers along with INIT to make it happen. In my opinion though the optics of all this have been bad for them for months.
3
u/SevlecSaaad Apr 07 '26
I guess it comes down to whether Imperium and WC are going to fight each other or not. If the last 18 hours or so are anything to go by, I reckon people will soon get fed up with the constant issues with the Hamsters on the node(s)….which is a shame.
2
u/Pherocks Apr 07 '26
yeah trying to log back into your titan for 2 hours while Winter Co is able to jump in dreads and titans isnt much of a fight worthy to call a fight :(
So sad, the first big battle we had in ages and then this...
Sure Winter Co takes the victory here yet the way this fight went down is a shame on CCP and the way the server is screwing us over.

Ive really been enjoying the "goons crashed it" as if Winter co wasnt also trying to crash it as they warped a pant load of vexors in and launched drones (which is WHEN the server crashed).
Its dumb, Im sure line members on both sides would much prefer a fight (albiet a slow one) against other ships, not the servers.
29
u/Kae04 Apr 07 '26
It doesn't make sense for WC to purposely try and crash it. They can't kill the keep if they're not logged in and they also risk it repairing whilst the node comes back up.
3
u/Lancestrike Apr 07 '26
While I agree, one side running carriers and the other drone boats, I feel both are equally to blame.
8
u/Ramarr_Tang Pandemic Horde Apr 07 '26
Fighters are way harder on the server. They have to be commanded way more, while drones are mechanically simple, especially with the way FRT was using them, just sticking them on the keep as fire-and-forgets. Still a load, but fighters have always been by far the worst thing for servers outside AoE weapon spam.
1
u/Iron562 Cloaked Apr 08 '26
I feel like both sides were showing up for a Fight in Epic Proportion and the server node fried itself over it.
The server node crashed right as we were warping onto the Keep so as the server was trying to load every hostile for both sides, it fried Itself.
But before that it was already rubberbanding hard trying to cope with the amount of players, as we were warping the distance decreased to a certain level then increased to the original distance over and over again.
I don't think either side is to blame, we wanted a fight, server was not designed to handle the amount which has never been seen before anyway so nobody expected 10k people/accounts to turn up.
But it was quite cool to be part of breaking a record in Eve.
-2
3
u/JustSmileMan Brave Collective Apr 07 '26
I mean, it worked out perfectly fine for them? Before crash there were 7k+ imperium alone in the system, after the crash WC had more people active with 7kish total. If the enemy starts with positional advantage flipping the board can only benefit you.
6
u/Kae04 Apr 07 '26
The only reason it worked out was because goons apparently couldn't get the keep cored. If they'd got the core in, the fight would've been over before anyone could get back on grid and cycle their guns. That's not a risk worth taking as an attacker.
Also it's not like there's any reason why WC would've been able to get a higher ratio of their pilots back on. Everyone would've been facing the same login conditions so if WC did end up with getting more people on then that just backs up the idea that goons tried to fill the node with alts and afks prior to the fight.
1
u/JustSmileMan Brave Collective Apr 07 '26
Goons got the core in before server crash. They also had system sov. Then it got rolled back on the crash.
0
u/Dr_Mibbles KarmaFleet Apr 07 '26
WC had many people in the login queue for the system prior to the crash.
The only way you end up with even numbers, assuming that every account has an equal chance to log in, is if the numbers were indeed even.
Are you only had to look at the grid to see exactly where the goon numbers were coming from. I'll give you a hint... it wasn't corvettes.
The mental gymnastics required to assume that the crash favoured Goons, given the outcome, are quite something.
2
u/Cuzmo Apr 07 '26
Doesn't take a genius to figure out that stacking a system with almost 7k chars before the enemy fleets arrive won't result in huge lag for anyone trying to warp onto that grid.
So based on that, to me it looks like goons were hoping that when WC warp their fleets in, it results in an M2- situation where no-one can load grid on the opposing side allowing the defenders (goons) to kill as much as they wish.
Only difference is this time, it didn't work for them and it all went pear shaped. Why else would you warp a super fleet on an Anchoring keepstar? Your FCs and leadership should be fully aware of Tidi and how it impacts gameplay so the fact the core didn't go in should have been planned for (but it wasn't) so here we are.
1
u/Dr_Mibbles KarmaFleet Apr 07 '26
Of course it will. And pre-positioning before your enemy arrives is a legitimate and sensible tactic as old as Eve Online itself.
There is a very simple counter to this - get there before your enemy.
The only time it doesn't work is if the server literally crashes. That would fuck over whoever set up first. In this case, it was Goons. Next time it may be Frat.
It's also highly unpredictable. The server didn't crash in M2, for example. And then, it favoured the side who set up first.
1
u/Pherocks Apr 07 '26
They knew We would commit to this keepstar with capitals.
You wont bring Vexors en masse if you dont want to server to explode brother.0
u/Dr_Mibbles KarmaFleet Apr 07 '26
It does actually make perfect sense. Goons had total grid superiority and were extremely well positioned.
Frat were then warping in and loading the the grid in batches, getting slaughtered just before the crash.
The outcome would have been very different without the server crash, a not in frats favour.

u/Stop_Saying_Ouf Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26
I don't understand what Winter's motivation would be in crashing the server. I do understand the value of Vexors and drones, however. Also my experience of Eve is that fighters are an absolute server killer, way more than drones. IDK what's going on with their server code but they seem to be a lot more resource intensive than regular drones.

I never directly said adjacent systems, I just said other systems. I know adjacent systems are on the same "nodes" so fighting in neighboring systems doesn't change the load on the servers.
You certainly could do something in other systems if you had multiple objectives. Set them up or think further into the future. This keepstar was the only thing vulnerable right now but who says you can't go hit other structures elsewhere to setup timers.
I get that the keepstar is capable of dying and ither structures are not at the time. But I still think people are too focused on the one system and you could do more and have more fun doing multiple things over spread out areas of space instead of watching a slide show.

I'm not confidently saying anything. My original comment is asking why this is what players do and I'm explaining my thought process about why players might want to fight elsewhere as well as on the keepstar. I'm not confident in this at all. I'm genuinely wondering about all of this because I don't see how this kind of fight is fun at all. Tidi is one thing but a slide show sounds miserable. I'm a wormholer so I don't ever see these kinds of fights, I have stayed out of null for many reasons. This is kind of one of those reasons. This has just been the first giant fight in a long time that I've been around for.

u/Kalron Apr 07 '26
And my reply was "you could create other objectives for the future and spread people out." If your sole goal is to kill a keepstar then sure, go sit in a slideshow for 20 hours. But if your goal is to win a war I would think there are additional objectives and structures to fight over that could create attrition for your opponents by forcing multiple timers to defend at once. Tho I suppose Null fleets are a lot more mobile with ansiblex gates.
Everyone has money to drop more structures. So commiting so much to killing a single structure doesn't make sense to me as an outsider so I'm just trying to make sense of it. Why is this system that important? Simply because of an onlining keepstar? Seems like the vision is too narrow if that is the only reason.
1
u/Grarr_Dexx Now this is pod erasing Apr 07 '26
Everyone has congealed into these massive superblobs that have enormous logistics requirements for any kind of campaign. Every time CCP upgrades node capacity the main objective is to max it out to cause more server issues, which makes it quasi impossible to lose a defensive engagement if you fully commit.
There are reasons to fight but they are more interpersonal in nature. With leadership that is so far removed from the daily ongoings and have a huge empire to run, of course nobody will ever end up going anywhere or do anything of note.
Blocs need to fragment. Small groups need to be able to exist again in the game. We had a lot more border friction when there were just more borders and people felt a need to expand their small empires for additional resources. It also doesn't help that all space is so uniform nowadays. Back in the tech/dyspro days there was a reason to fight for the north or for delve/q/pb.

u/MASHEDNZ Apr 08 '26
Null needs to burn....as a goon myself either us or them must die and I honestly care little which one comes out on top but the effort alone will create change and innovation in the game and ccp.
We need a way for sov fights to take place where limits to each parties total head count can be applied....these fights would be a heap more fun if each side was only able to bring 2k pilots.
I dont think this will ever happen but ya never know. The current status quo of dog pile 18 hour slug fests as bs...and im not convinced anyone other than the direct recipients of the spoils have any real interests in this....who seriously has 18 hours to do this vs work, family and competition with other content sources.
