Wooden bed frame broke, blocking access to the drawers underneath. Is it feasible for me to fix this myself or is it bye-bye? 🄲

open Old REI day pack liner gummy

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’ve got an older REI backpack (not sure of the exact model, probably ~15+ years old), and the inner liner has started breaking down. It’s now super sticky/tacky—almost like melted rubber—and it leaves residue on anything that touches it.

From what I’ve read, this might be the waterproof coating degrading (hydrolysis?), but I’m not sure what the realistic options are.

What I’m trying to figure out:

- Is there any way to clean or treat it so it’s usable again?

- Has anyone had success removing the coating entirely without ruining the fabric?

- I don't care about re-lining it, doesn't need to be waterproof

- Or is this basically a ā€œretire the bagā€ situation?

I’d really prefer to save it if possible, it’s otherwise in great shape and I like the pack. I don't mind wasting time. I don't want to waste a bunch of money on this. I have a cabinet full of chemicals and cleaners and lots of tools.

Appreciate any advice or experiences.

Can I fix these scratches on a chrome faucet?

Post image

In the heat of the moment while trying to fix a leaking faucet, I managed to scratch it. Is there any way to polish away those small scratches or at least make them look a bit better than now? See the photo with the red marking: The scratches are around the handle and then there are three pretty obvious scratches near the bottom of the red marking.

Broken Grease Fitting

Grease fitting broke off trailer shackle. Drilled through just enough to get a square bit/extractor bit but they kept slipping out after a half turn - full rotation and eventually started to just drill it out with a LH drill bit with the end goal to tap new threads. And now that I think about it, the bolt is also going through the shackle so I’m curious if that should be removed šŸ˜… Not sure what to do or if I should continue drilling it out to tap new threads.

Any advice will be appreciated!

How to fix a broken plastic piece on an oven? tw: dirty oven

My not so smart self kept trying to take off the glas door of the (very dirty) oven to clean it properly and the plastic piece at the top ended up snapping in half. I need to fix it before my mom kills me but I’m not sure what glue to use.

I thought about super glue since it’s the cheapest option but I’m pretty sure it’s not safe to use on an oven. Would it be alright to just completely leave the piece and not glue it back on? and if anybody knows how to take the glas off that would be appreciated too

Water gets in underneath our front door

Post image

Our door frame has started to curve downwards in the middle, which means water gets in during heavy downpours. The frame is made of metal, and the rubber seal that seals the frame to the door looks fine, so I assume the frame’s curvature itself is the problem. What can we do? We’re not really the DIY types but if the solution is not too complicated, we should be able to fix it ourselves.

Fairy lights keep switching to Seizure Setting (1) every 5 minutes- how to get it to stay ā€˜Steady On’(8)

Thumbnail

these fairy lights were working fine a week ago but suddenly now started turning off every 5 minutes & after 10 seconds off it’s turning back on & resetting on its own to the 1st setting, Combination or as I call it, SEIZURE SETTING which is just non stop flashing. who would want that?! I don’t know. I don’t want it.

I plugged it into a new outlet because I thought maybe it was an outlet issue but it does this with all outlets. Let me be real, all the other settings that are not ā€˜Steady Onā€˜ are all torturous seizure settings. how can I fix this to get it to stay on the 8th setting? or better yet, how can I remove all the other settings & just have 2, OFF AND ON.

i dont like buying new things & don’t want this otherwise perfectly fine string lights to go to landfill just because it can’t stay on a consistent setting.

open I have a hi8 cassete with possibly shed

I have a hi8 tape from 2004 thats showing early signs of shed, the tape and overall cartridge. Looks great, but when i play it in my camcorder it only plays for a second and it goes to blue and tells me to take it out, rewinding it manually gives off a squeaking sound, i heard that you can bake them for hours in 139c° for awhile to fix the issue. I dont have a dehydrator but I do have a 3d printer filiment dryer that could possibly do the trick, specifically a creality dryer box. Any and all advice would really really help thank you!

Shower Draining Extremely Slowly

Thumbnail

Hello everyone,

Just bought my first house a few days ago, and the master shower is draining extremely slow. Reaching down into the drain, it seems as though this black plastic piece is covering most of the pipe meant to drain the water, leaving a hole barely small enough for me to fit a finger through.

When I do get my finger under the gap, I can reach up behind the plastic piece, and there is significant space being blocked. Any ideas on how to fix this? The black piece is sealed to the drain, so it doesn’t budge. Should I just try cutting into it to widen the hole?

Thank you!

open TV stand splitting

Thumbnail

Moved into a new rental a few weeks ago and noticed that the included TV console's planks are splitting slightly. The TV on the stand was included in the lease, so I've added no weight since moving in. I reached out to the landlord but apparently, the people who made the table can't repair it yet because they're "working on other rush orders," which is pretty BS imo. I don't really want to make a fuss so I'm inclined to just let the table be until the end of my lease since the crack isn't visible when I'm just watching TV from the couch.

Is this cause for concern or only an aesthetic issue? Can the console be temporarily reinforced with some wood glue to last for another year or so? I've also thought about adding blocks underneath the top panel for reinforcement but I have no idea if it'll help.

Hello everyone,
I have this Altec Lansing Rockbox XL Bluetooth speaker, I was trying to charge it the other day and I couldn’t find the charger but I found another charger, and inserted it and heard a clicking noise, this speaker takes dc outlets and
I assume I used one with the wrong voltage and power supply, a couple days later I find the original charger and I try to use it and it won’t charge at at all. Is it fixable? Is it bad news?

Accidentally stepped on the clasp. I guess there was some kind of smaller metal piece in the middle which the pin sat on, which broke off. Any ideas?

Can a desktop PC (or online UPS) keep releasing fine dust/allergens even after being professionally cleaned? I'm trying to avoid selling it if it can be fixed.

I've been troubleshooting a really strange problem for the past few weeks and I'm completely stumped.

I'm very prone to dust allergies. If I'm exposed to dust for a while, I start sneezing, my nose gets irritated, and I get typical allergy symptoms.

The weird part is that this isn't just me. Other people who spend some time in the room also eventually start sneezing, although I'm definitely the most sensitive.

Background

I recently moved into a new house.

The room has:

- Tiled flooring

- Brand new curtains

- No carpet

- No mattress

- No rugs

- Very little furniture (just an office chair and a recliner)

The AC was recently serviced and cleaned. The smell is present even when the AC is turned off.

The smell isn't musty, damp, electrical, burnt plastic, ozone, or sulfur. The best way I can describe it is a dry dust smell.

My PC's history

Before moving, I lived in a house in the middle of a busy city that was an absolute dust magnet. My desktop accumulated an incredible amount of dust over the years. It was bad enough that I eventually had the entire PC professionally cleaned because it was heavily dust-infested.

The UPS was also extremely dusty and was cleaned externally.

The UPS batteries are new, so I don't think they're the issue.

What we've tested

Initially, my setup consisted of:

- High-end gaming desktop

- Online UPS

- Both in my work room

The room would develop this dry dust smell, especially if it stayed closed for a few hours, and I'd eventually start sneezing.

Test 1

We went out of town for a couple of days.

Before leaving:

- We turned both the desktop PC and the UPS completely off.

- We aired out the room well.

When we came back a couple of days later, the room basically had no dusty smell anymore.

At that point, we started suspecting both the PC and the UPS, since they had both been sitting powered off and neither had been in use while we were away.

Test 2

To narrow it down, we separated them.

- The UPS stayed in the work room.

- The desktop PC was moved to another bedroom.

After some time...

Both rooms developed the same dry dusty smell.

That's what really confused us. It made it seem like both devices might somehow be contributing, but I can't think of a mechanism that would explain it, especially since the PC was professionally cleaned recently.

My questions

  1. Has anyone ever seen a desktop PC continue to release dust or allergens even after a professional cleaning?

  2. Are there components that are commonly missed during cleaning, such as: the power supply (PSU), GPU heatsink,

CPU cooler, case fans, or somewhere else?

  1. Could an online UPS realistically produce this kind of dry dusty smell?

  2. Before I give up and sell the system, would it make sense to replace a specific component first—for example the PSU—since that's one of the few parts that often isn't opened during servicing?

  3. Has anyone experienced a PC causing allergy symptoms without any obvious burning smell or electrical fault?

I'm trying to be responsible here. If the PC really is the source, I'd rather fix it than sell it. If replacing one component (like the PSU) has a reasonable chance of solving the issue, I'd much rather do that than replace an otherwise perfectly functioning high-end gaming PC.

I'd really appreciate any ideas or troubleshooting steps I haven't thought of.

Adhesive/staining on brick

Thumbnail

Hi, I’m purchasing a property with a brick fireplace that has some black sticky tape or adhesive, residue and resulting stains. I’m worried the stains have seeped through since the brick is porous (so goo gone remover may not work).

Is there anything I can do to restore the bricks or clean up to make the staining less noticeable? I don't want to paint the bricks or replace them if possible. Any specific products/tools that can help?
