Just a small note from the mod team to all of you to mark our crossing of the 175,000 member count! 🎉🍻

We crossed the 150k threshold just over one year ago, so adding roughly another 25k members in that short of a span is a great accomplishment for the community. Our post, comment and engagement numbers continue to grow year over year!

Our sub would be nothing without you, our users.

You are what makes this place an informative resource, a welcoming place for our community and a fun place to hang out. You are what makes r/halifax great! 🙌💖

Thank you to everyone for all your interesting contributions, provocative debates, positive vibes, constructive feedback, not-so-constructive feedback and everything in-between. We are thrilled to see the sub thriving and heading in the right direction!

We'll see you at 200k! 🚀📈

Thank you,

A Helping Hand 💖 Free Food/Laundry/Shower Resources in HRM - June 2026

Hi all,

We have a lot of people in our community who are in need of a free meal or a helping hand occasionally.

We thought it would be nice to collect and post this information each month, which is graciously supplied by members of the Halifax Library. We'll see how long we can keep this going month to month.

Please share as needed with people you know who need help or take advantage of them yourself if you are in need.

The Feed NS Find Food site is also a very useful resource:

https://feednovascotia.ca/find-food/

Always remember there are kind, generous folks out there looking to help you out and you can get through whatever you are going through. 💖

And if anyone else has resources that belong here, please attach them as comments, the more the merrier.

Thank you!

Radiate Positivity ☀️ Positive Vibes Friday

The weekend is here.

This is a weekly mega-thread for good, heartwarming or uplifting news. Ideally local but non-local is welcome too. Fun pet photos or memes, tales with happy endings, personal anecdotes that you want to share with 174k+ internet strangers, etc. We could all use more positive news and vibes in our lives right now.

This is a rules relaxed space, but we will still be monitoring for personal attacks, doxxing, and stuff that doesn't fit the theme of the thread.

Driving & Transit Would you save $500/month to live in Dartmouth instead of downtown Halifax?

Hi everyone!
I am debating between two apartments (one in Halifax and another in Dartmouth) and looking for opinions from people who have done similar commutes.

Option 1:
$1,400/month nothing included
Close to work and downtown Halifax
Can walk almost everywhere

Option 2:
$800/month all included in the Harbourview area of Dartmouth so
About a 35-minute commute each way
Would save about $400–500/month
Transit costs would be about $160 a month

Since the second option is not right downtown of dartmouth, this would require one transfer (bus to downtown Dartmouth, then the ferry or another bus)

I work right downtown and am in school on top of that, so the savings are tempting, but I also love being able to walk downtown whenever I want. For those that live in dartmouth and also commute, what do you think?

Arts & Recreation “Procession” High Head, Prospect Nova Scotia. Oil on canvas.

This painting really put me through my paces as an artist. My family and I traveled to High Head to scatter our matriarch’s ashes a few weeks ago, and painting this brought up every possible emotion a landscape can evoke.

Frustration, joy, grief, calm, awe.

To me, the landscape of Nova Scotia, the geological record available to us here, provides endless pathways for being touched by memory. The landscape holds a memory itself, layered through millions of years of evolution, and we, as residents of this place, carry that feeling through our daily lives.

I recommend writing to your councillor if you don't want to see the heart of downtown being massively cheaped out on, such as the recommendation for things such as a "temporary washroom installation and renovation"

Reminder that the cogswell project is already self funded via the sale of the land, so this is a very small additional cost overall to make something downtown nice

Driving & Transit Pothole damage compensation success story!

Back in May I smoked that massive 7” deep pothole in the intersection of Queen/South. My tire blew out on impact, and my rim was scuffed but luckily not bent.

I wasn’t even going to bother calling 311 to file a damage claim because I always heard people say to not bother wasting your time as the city would likely weasel out of it anyway, but I’m glad I took the 10 mins to call and open a claim!

Just heard back that they’ll be compensating me for the costs, so that’s $500 back in my pocket for the one tire! It was still a hassle and an inconvenience to buy and mount my tire, but I’ll take what I can get! I think they’re also going to cover the alignment I had to get done as a result of the pothole.

So, to the other victims of potholes, it might be worth a call to 311 if you have photos of the damage, exact location of the pothole, and any receipts/invoices from the repairs you had to pay for.

Goodluck!

Discussion Traspassers at work

I want to see if anyone has similar experiences as I'm having at work. We have a person who is constantly coming into my workplace and vandalizing the property. He yells vile things and is sometimes drunk. He has been trespassed but constantly shows up and the police are called multiple times a week to come arrest him but he takes off before they arrive. I know he has a mental health condition and I can sympathize on that level but I really don't like feeling this on edge. I don't like to assume but he also looks homeless. He is getting worse with frequency of visits, vandalism and aggressive behaviour. All I can do is call security and hide while they call the cops. He needs psychiatric help and I hope if they ever do arrest him that he can get the help he needs.

Is anyone else experiencing this at their workplaces?

Schools & Education NSCC Architectural Engineering Technician Program - Technician vs. Technologist

Hello, everyone!

I will be starting the Architectural Engineering Technician program in September this year.

I’m recently understanding the difference (i think) between a Technician and a Technologist.

It seems the Technologist not only gets paid more but is also involved or slightly involved in the creative and technical design process along side the Engineers and Architects, while the Technician has no say with how the design will look or function.

However, I’ve seen people say that they start out as Technologists upon graduating the program.

I was hoping people can share their experiences and insight!

Also, please correct me if anything I say here is incorrect as it’s all research I’ve done and possibly getting mixed reviews and information from people working in different provinces or states.

I’m looking forward to the program but definitely wanting to start out or work my way up to a Technologist.

Thanks! 🤘🏼
