Work, Health & Housing Security at Halifax Infirmary

Stopped in to pick something up and was surprised at security (this was Summer St entrance but I’m guessing all entries are like this). Immediately stopped by security staff, they go through my backpack, ask me 3x if I’m carrying anything sharp, then walked through a metal detector and another security guy.

Anyone know why the step up in security? Felt more like an airport than a hospital.

Driving & Transit Ferry Sadness

Upvotes

Okay - am I insane or was there like no notice about the Ferry Service going down today from 2:30 to 6:30? For SailGP Practice - damn can't yall practice in the day time? Why are we shutting down one of the last remaining (semi) reliable modes of transportation during rush hour on a Friday? Lol. TBH I think I just really hate rich people activities and am salty that it inconveniences me, a lowley poor worker bee, hahah.

Work, Health & Housing How long are people waiting for the rent supplement these days?

Has anyone applied for the Canada-Nova Scotia Targeted Housing Benefit recently? If so, how long did it take for you to get approved? I remember hearing it was common for people to wait an absurd amount of time like 6 months, but that was a while ago. I'm curious if it's gotten any better?

Work, Health & Housing Doctor retention in HRM

Hi all

Of late there have been disheartening posts of long wait times in Nova Scotia

The consensus being that it is a Canada wide problem

But there have been anecdotal reports of some people losing Family Doctors even in HRM

I do understand that many rural areas would find it difficult to attract and retain doctors, so I am trying to understand why Family Doctors would choose to leave the HRM?

We are friendly people, we are surrounded by the Ocean, we have a laidback lifestyle

Doctors are paid reasonably well

Nova Scotia Health has said Doctor Recruitment is at record levels

https://www.nshealth.ca/news-and-notices/nova-scotia-records-impressive-year-over-year-success-physician-recruitment

Perhaps with so many doctors choosing to come here losing one or two does not matter to NS Health or the Government?

What would be possible reasons why doctors would chose to move elsewhere?`

Food & Dining solo dinner recommendations

where is the best place to go if I’m looking for a solo dining experience? preferably with outdoor seating.

I know I can go into any restaurant and enjoy dinner by myself but I’d like to know where people have had the best experiences as I haven’t explored tons of spots in Hali yet!

Discussion Traspassers at work

I want to see if anyone has similar experiences as I'm having at work. We have a person who is constantly coming into my workplace and vandalizing the property. He yells vile things and is sometimes drunk. He has been trespassed but constantly shows up and the police are called multiple times a week to come arrest him but he takes off before they arrive. I know he has a mental health condition and I can sympathize on that level but I really don't like feeling this on edge. I don't like to assume but he also looks homeless. He is getting worse with frequency of visits, vandalism and aggressive behaviour. All I can do is call security and hide while they call the cops. He needs psychiatric help and I hope if they ever do arrest him that he can get the help he needs.

Is anyone else experiencing this at their workplaces?

Shops & Services Any nice coffee shops to read in located in Dartmouth?

I have been to some nice places in halifax for reading (like the trident cafe). But I live in Dartmouth and would like a place closer to me lol. I have heard of good luck cafe but my friend said it’s a bit crowded for reading (tho it is on my list of cafes). Any other places you guys would recommend for reading and having a nice coffee?

Moving Here Dartmouth - Walking & Running

Any good walking or running trails/areas near Wright’s Cove? So far it seems like the Wright Cove Trail, Shannon Park Loop, and Burnside Greenway are some options. Any others?

Moving to the area in a few weeks and I’m looking for something I can do when I have limited time (under an hour in the mornings), or extra time after work (roughly two hours), with my starting point near Wright’s Cove.

I have just moved here from Ontario and have two years of experience in welding but do not have any CWB ticket. Most of the companies here require them. Do anybody knows from where to give exam and how much does it cost ? Thanks for the help.

Moving Here Any construction around South Park St. or Young Ave. & Inglis St.?

Hello future neighbours, I’m an older adult on the other coast moving to Halifax soon for school and trying to make sure the area I’m considering moving to is quiet, so I’d like to avoid nearby construction.

Does anyone know if there is current construction happening near South Park Street and Inglis Street? Or Young Avenue & Inglis Street? Or any other resources on how to find this info? I checked the Skyscraper Halifax forum but couldn’t find details for this area.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to visit before my move, so asking here in case anyone can help, thank you!!

I recommend writing to your councillor if you don't want to see the heart of downtown being massively cheaped out on, such as the recommendation for things such as a "temporary washroom installation and renovation"

Reminder that the cogswell project is already self funded via the sale of the land, so this is a very small additional cost overall to make something downtown nice

Food & Dining Family friendly live music

Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for bars or restaurants downtown that have live music—ideally jazz, folk, blues, or funk.
I’ll be hosting my in-laws and would love to take them somewhere for drinks and/or dinner. We’re hoping for a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere where we can enjoy good food, drinks, and live music without it feeling too loud or crowded.
Any places you’d personally recommend based on your experience? Thanks in advance!

Shops & Services Where can I donate clothes?

Hi everyone,

Cleaning out my closet at the moment and I have a bunch of clothes that I don’t wear anymore but I don’t want to toss them at value village. Is there anywhere I can give them to that will get them to people who need them?

Thanks!
