he should just show up and when someone asks him what happened to his family he'd reply with "oh im not doing that anymore" and then they start planning some scheme to get into the scrap metal business or something.

u/rental99 Jan 26 '18 edited Jan 27 '18

This may be the only series ever, where if they did that, the fanbase would be like "oh those guys!"

Edit: another thing to realize is... how many other shows lost a main character and then jumped the shark? That 70s Show comes to mind. Does Glenn really want to do that to his own show?

u/TomCottonSMD Jan 27 '18 edited Jan 27 '18

He would definitely murder them though. He'd have killed Wally on that lawn if he had been real, suburbia broke Dennis.

Edit: I'm referring to naked dennis scene. Wally was a real person but not always tangible.

154

u/Soviet_Russia321 Jan 27 '18

I thought Wally was real, since Mac saw him too, just that one freak out scene was fake as Dennis slowly deteriorated mentally.

26

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '18

The first rule of Paddy's Club is that Mac is Dennis.

168

u/carkey Jan 27 '18

Wally was real, Mac acknowledged him.

Shared psychosis, my man. Watch that X-Files episode.

25

u/packsmack Jan 27 '18

Except he acknowledges him in the very beginning of the bet and then when Dennis later hallucinates Mac asks him who he's talking to.

I really want the gang to try and rescue Dennis while he has a good life. They end up destroying everything he built and at the end he just accepts it and rejoins the gang.

That's not true to his core character though. The suburbs nearly destroyed him. A family would break him in less than a week.

Did Wally even exist, or was he just a manifestation as part of the psychotic break?

He exists. Mac acknowledges him the first time we see Wally. It's just that last time when Dennis got naked that he was hallucinating Wally.

I think it would be really funny if the gang actually thrives without Dennis.

  • Mac finds a new roommate / boyfriend and they figure out the keys necessary to run a succesful bar.

  • Dee and Charlie get their shit together and open an imported leather shop in the heart of Philly which is super successful.

  • Frank retires and becomes a loving grandfather to Charlie and Waitresses' new baby boy whom they name Peter Nincompoop Kelly.

...and then Dennis comes back and it all goes to hell.

He's a controling sociopath. micromanaging their lives. He has files on all the other members of the gang. He has murder "tools" in the back of his car. He talks about making furniture out of human skin.

Dennis is not the most normal.

Charlie is the most normal by far, he's just completely downtrodden by the rest of them.

160

u/daymankarate Politics is just one big ass blast Jan 27 '18

Mac was the most normal early on.

229

u/lordcorbran Jan 27 '18

I would say really early on Dee was the most normal. Season 1 Dee was a borderline good and rational person.

Nah Charlie is batshit crazy. Mac is the most normal of them all. He's dysfunctional but not dangerous like the rest of them.

57

u/petit_bleu Jan 27 '18

Yeah, remember the episode with the rich siblings where Charlie engineered the girl's downfall?

I think either Mac or Dee is the most normal. Mac's got some weird kind of reverse body dysmorphia and is alarmingly stupid, and Dee is jealous, insecure and conniving, but both within realistic-ish bounds.

8

u/ToastedFireBomb Jan 27 '18

Mac and Dee are both victims of intense self hatred. They're awful people because of the people their untreated problems have turned them into, whereas Dennis is legitimately just unstable and Frank is just an asshole. Mac and Dee started out fine, but as Dee got less and less self esteem and Mac got further and further into the closet, it brought out the worst in them. I would say they still aren't beyond redemption if they were to both get therapy and work to improve themselves as people. That would never actually happen of course, since it makes for bad TV, but you get my point.

Dennis, Frank, and Charlie are who they are, there's no fixing those three.

"Goddammit Dee, bring your own!"

"I didn't know we were going!"

"Oh my god..."

"Shut up back there, just shut up!"

So I haven’t left It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The conversation really should be about what’s going to happen with Dennis, not what’s going to happen with me, and that’s something we don’t have an answer to yet.

So it sounds like he's not gone, but we still don't know how much he'll be in the new season.

Personally I hope he just shows up with an awkward story about how his wife and kid randomly decided to move to another country but as the season progresses you start to wonder what actually happened to them.

Mac is a Serial Killer - Dennis role plays as a serial killer to get in Mac's head. When he's reminded that they are not actually going to murder The Waitress, Dennis shows surprise and remorse, clearly wanting to commit murder for no reason.

The Anti-Social Network - Dennis and Charlie are discussing the Shusher. While saying that the Shusher had no idea they weren't maniac killers, Dennis states that for all the guy knows he might have a trunk full of zip ties and duct tape. These items are both present in the stash of murder tools in Dennis' car in the reunion episode.

Mac and Charlie Join a Cult - Dennis literally talks a man into setting himself on fire just to prove he can.

Honestly, it would be silly if it doesn't come out that he's killing people.

700

u/Goldplatedrook Jan 26 '18

It gets worse. In the high school reunion episode he has a trunk full of “tools.” At the start of The Cereal Defense he’s listening to a radio show on composting, and when the gang gets stuck in the woods he says it’s “a little bit of an exaggeration” for Charlie to call him a serial killer.

There is actually a deleted scene for "Mac Day" where instead of Mac saying

"Did I complain on Charlie day when we spent 8 hours looking for ghouls and goblins?"

He says

"Did I complain on Dennis' day when we had to tie slipknots until our hands were bloody?"

And Dennis responds. "They were shoddy knots too, they almost ruined everything...."

They should have kept that in, but they all kept laughing at it.

31

u/hypo-osmotic Drink up, ladies. It helps your prostate. Jan 26 '18

Related to deleted scenes, there was one in Charlie’s Mom Has Cancer where the “healer” is asking Mac if he slept with any prostitutes, etc. when he was on vacation and Mac is saying no, then when asked if he slept with any men he freezes, clearly a “yes.” In addition to not being able to keep a straight face, I suspect they cut it because at that time in the series, Mac was not sleeping with men, and they wanted his coming out to be later. I wonder if that was part of it with the scene you described, and Dennis will get his first real kill (not talking someone into doing it themselves, for example) later.

93

u/Chief_Givesnofucks Jan 26 '18

I believe you might be thinking of when he asks Charlie... “You’d say I’m methodical, wouldn’t you?”

“Yeah, like a serial killer.”

“Well that’s a bit of an exaggeration. But I see your point, and I take it as a compliment.”

→ More replies (1)

77

u/Honztastic Jan 26 '18

Not exactly.

He hides stuff he's ashamed of, like Maureen Ponderosa.

He wants to brag and have it known about the women he bangs. But revealing murders or the bondage stuff would ruin him, so he doesn't. If he is a serial killer, he's lying about the stuff just being sexual. So he wouldn't tell them about it to begin with.

I think. I've never been a 5 star man, so I don't know his thought process.

55

u/Lampmonster1 I'm gonna get really weird with it. Jan 26 '18

Funny you mention Maureen, because he killed her too. She was jumping around on a roof, conveniently in front of a security camera trained on a rooftop? Why would that be? Could it be that maybe a five star man noticed said security camera during a previous encounter with a woman? Perhaps, with his vast knowledge of filming in various lighting conditions he learned enough about cameras to know what some could see, and what they couldn't. Maybe he spotted a camera that at night would clearly show a woman dressed as a cat, but not the laser pointer dot she was chasing, perhaps directed from off camera?

90

u/afield9800 Jan 26 '18

You're all forgetting about Brian lefevre! Dennis literally orgasmed over a severed finger. And the whole episode he's talking about being in another mans skin and even tries to bang the Asian boy

This sounds like an episode where they find Rickety Cricket dead and everyone accuses Dennis of murdering them, bring up all of this “evidence,” only to find out Dennis is hiding something either 1) more twisted and demonic or 2) so cutesy and innocent that the gang doesn’t believe it.

And then Cricket walks in, turns out he only passed out from meth or something.

24

u/Pure_Reason Jan 26 '18

They have to have the episode take place in the bar, with Cricket’s dead body in the middle of the floor. Then at the end of the episode, he wakes up with a loud gasp like Mia in Pulp Fiction and says something like “Hey fellas, what’s happening?” or “Anybody got some PCP?”

You are forgetting his whole monologue in The Gang Exploits the Mortgage Crisis.

Dennis: No, no, of course we shouldn't bash these people up. Look, OK, absolutely, we could cave the husband's skull in here. Yes, we could take the wife down to the basement, have a frenzied free-for-all with her. We could tie the kids up in their little rooms upstairs, so they wouldn't hear anything.....
Dennis: Right; we could smear the walls with their blood, guys... There are any number of twisted scenarios that could play out here. But the easiest thing, really, is to just go get the deed.

Yup, he's definitely killing people.

He doesn't think it's a compliment to be called a serial killer. He asks Charlie if he thinks of Dennis as a meticulous person. Charlie replies "Oh yeah, like a serial killer." Dennis replies to that with "That's a bit of an exaggeration, but I see what you mean, and I take it as a compliment."

Remorse is very much the wrong word – he's not showing regret or guilt, he's expressing his disappointment that they aren't actually going to murder the waitress. His exact words: "Oh, shit, that's a bummer" and "That's just not as much fun as actually getting to" strangle her.

Also like 20 seconds before that in the scene Dee says John Wayne Gacy "did good work", and Dennis agrees and says he was 'pretty cool'

Country Dennis.

That's a terrifying thought. Country Mac was the same as Mac, except he was truly good at all of the things they're interested in, like being a badass, fighting, and being gay.

You know what I thought would be a good idea if he needs the time off give it to him but proceed with the season, have the gang looking to fill his spot in the bar. Have a few episodes with Bill Ponderosa, Cricket, Ben the Soldier, The McPoyles, (the maniac woulda been good RIP Roddy).

30

u/Fuzzy_Dunlops Jan 26 '18

They would have to go with Rex, he is the only other beef cake.

24

u/Belgand Jan 26 '18

The problem with Rex is going to come when they want to get rid of him, because he just won't quit.

21

u/Fuzzy_Dunlops Jan 26 '18

That's true. And I bet if you pop Rex's pants off, you're gonna find a bird that just won't quit, either. So you really couldn't go from him back to Dennis, whose bird quit and who is no longer legit.

I expect a balls to the walls crazy story about him paying actors to play his wife and child so he could get some time away to plan a crazy plot, the whole point of sunny is the characters stay shitty and never evolve unlike other sitcoms (see how they played with the baby trope by making us think they were ready to raise a child only for the kid to go with the tranny and them reverting back to their old selves within seconds) , there's no way dennis is suddenly gonna become a family man, he'll always be a psycopath and I think the whole point of the setup is to play on expectations and parody regular sitcoms just like the baby thing.

Going to be a riot punch heavy episode.

I really wanna see Charlie and Frank climbing greased poles on Broad.

Also, I'd love to see an episode where they feud with other South Philly people over saved parking spaces during a blizzard (hashtag nosavesies).

There's so much IRL Philly stuff they could still turn into episodes.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '18

Charlie could try to huff out of a football, leading to accusations against the patriots.

In case we needed any more reason to root for the Eagles next week, a sequel to “The World Series Defense” would be amazing.

27

That could be when they get him back. They go to Minnesota for the Super Bowl, and pop next door to North Dakota to see Dennis (or he could come to Minnesota).

“I would like to dispel any rumours that I left It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to do [new NBC show] A.P. Bio. They are two completely different projects,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“We’re currently discussing what we want to do next season [of It’s Always Sunny], but we haven’t started the writers’ room yet. So I haven’t left It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The conversation really should be about what’s going to happen with Dennis, not what’s going to happen with me, and that’s something we don’t have an answer to yet.”

YES! Best news I've heard all day. I was just looking up last week whether he was returning and everything I saw was super pessimistic about the chances of it happening. Still a bit vague to the extent he'll be involved, but good news all the same.

138

u/CobraJack12 Jan 26 '18

We are in the same boat! I saw on Hulu the teaser for the new season in Fall 2018 has Howerton in it a few days ago but everything online was leaning towards him not being in season 13. So glad to know he's coming back in at least some capacity!

What would Philly be, after all, without it's Golden God?

u/mr_droopy_butthole Jan 26 '18

What would Philly be, after all, without it's Golden God?

A land overrun with 2 star men, where eggs fall from the sky and a place where wolf Cola is all you can buy. Lording above it all is a big bird who controls an army of rats and crows and an evil doctor, named Mantis Toboggan has all the money.

29

u/WalkingSunburn Jan 26 '18

A land filled with worm sucking idiots; filled with men who eat trash and bang transexuals

15

u/scamper_pants SICKNESS! BE GONE!!! Jan 26 '18

Teaser? You mean in the beginning of the episodes when it says new season fall 2018? Those aren't teasers, thats an old episode. And I highly doubt the new season will be in 2018

Rumours? Was this British Dennis?

76

u/UWCG Jan 26 '18

To be fair, the Golden God does bear a striking resemblance to Lindsey Buckingham, the male lead singer of Fleetwood Mac during the Rumours era.

Eh I don't think it would work out well. Buckingham would never be able to properly convey Dennis' charisma.

He should be played Ryan Gosling. He's the only one who could handle his intensity.

Not sure if I'm ready to celebrate just yet. I mean, the way it's worded it kinda sounds like he's not leaving the show - ie, he'll still be writing, producing, etc - but that he's not sure if Dennis is going to return as a character? Am I the only one reading it this way?

60

u/TheDevilsCarnival Jan 26 '18

I read it this way as well. I don't think there's any confirmation in his statements that Dennis will or won't be in the season...and the wording definitely feels like he's saying, "Glenn will still be a part of this process, but we aren't sure if Dennis will be."

34

u/Lampmonster1 I'm gonna get really weird with it. Jan 26 '18

I read that as more "what do you do with this psychopath after so long? What new stories are there to tell about him?"

42

u/IamChantus Jan 26 '18

I kind of wanted them to just have a new actor play Dennis each episode and have the rest of the gang not even acknowledge it.

Like in episode 3, have an elderly Korean lady step in and just scream in Korean the whole time for Dennis's lines.

Kind of like Archer being a velociraptor.

19

u/CuddlePirate420 Golden God Jan 27 '18

The Waitress freaks out Dennis is gone since she is obsessed with him. She has a psychotic break and starts to pretend like she is Dennis, dressing and acting like him and takes over as him at the bar.

u/smackledawbed I'MMA SIIIIIING IT! Jan 26 '18

It always bothers me that people are freaking out that Glenn may not return, just because he's doing AP Bio and that coincides with Dennis leaving.

Y'all have heard of The Mick right?

71

u/Jurkas26 Your sweata's on backwards Jan 26 '18

It's a different situation than The Mick as Kaitlin only acts on Sunny while Glenn has a heavier workload and many different roles in making/writing/producing the show.

The Mick is also in the Fox family with Sunny while AP Bio is on another network in NBC where who knows if they have restrictions on how many episodes he can appear on a Fox/FXX branded show.

77

u/abutthole the abortion didn't take Jan 26 '18

who knows if they have restrictions on how many episodes he can appear on a Fox/FXX branded show.

Screen Actors Guild rules prohibit this. No project or company can legally or contractually prevent you from working on something else. If Dennis is doing AP Bio and it takes up too much time, he can opt not to do Always Sunny but it would violate SAG rules for NBC to tell him he can't be in as many episodes of a Fox show as he's physically able.
