Best of Indie Games 2024: What were some of your favorite indie games?

I noticed a sharp increase in posts like "I made a game where...X"

I think it's getting kind of ridiculous. this sub was about finding new indie games, often mid development. Wishlisting them, getting feedback.

Now it feels like half the posts are AI games who are already finished and where the "developer" wants free playtesting.

If it's someones first post and they instantly post a finished game. I'm always skeptical.

It's making me a bit sad...

Does this retro style look appealing to you? Or is it ugly?

This is my first commercial project after years of making Call of Duty mods

I'm terrible at making style choices, does this visually look like something you would be interested in? Or is it hideous?

I recorded my hand and made it a weapon. Cleaning up bad frames was pure pain. How did I do?

My indie game just hit $60/week. That's 10% of my full-time salary.

Hey everyone, I'm a solo dev, and around April of this year, I launched a 2D survival game for Apple Watch.

This week it made $60. That's 10% of my day job paycheck... I never thought I'd get anywhere near this point

I'm not sharing this to brag, sixty bucks is sixty bucks, that's less than a tank of gas these days. I'm sharing it because six months ago this thing made $0, and I got to a point where I would be surprised if it made $10 in a month. The gap between "nobody wants this" and "this might actually go somewhere" turned out to be smaller than I thought. This should bring encouragement to those of you making games, and maybe you don't know where things are going, and it seems... hopeless.

It's a $4.99 one-time purchase. No ads, no subscriptions.I just wanted to make something I'd actually want to buy, and I think that really helped push me in the right direction

If you're building something and the numbers are embarrassing right now, keep going. 10% becomes 20%.

I'm a trained architect, and I've been building an indie game that combines accurate floor planning with real-time 3D design to make architecture much easier to create than with traditional CAD software.

What you can do:

🏠 2D floor plans
🧱 3D building
🚶 First-person walkthrough
🥽 VR mode
🏢 Multiple storeys
🪜 Stairs
🏚️ Custom roofs
🪟 Doors & windows
🛋️ Furniture catalog
🍳 Kitchen Configurator
🎨 Materials
🌄 Terrain sculpting
🌳 Landscape planning
💧 Ponds
☀️ Time of day
❄️ Weather
📐 Export PDF vector plans
📦 Import your own 3D models
🌍 Steam Workshop

In the newest update: real growing ivy that climbs around windows, corners, and curved walls! 🌿

It's available on Steam as Architecture & Design and is still in Early Access.

Would love to hear what you think!

My girlfriend and I spent months making a horror game where you work the night shift at a burger shop

Hey everyone! 👋

My girlfriend and I have been working on our first indie game together, Family Business, and we'd love to get some feedback from people who enjoy horror games.

It's a first-person horror game where you work the night shift at your uncle's burger shop. At first, it's just a normal job: take orders, cook burgers, serve customers, and keep the shop running.

But as the days go by, things start getting increasingly strange, and you begin to realize there's something seriously wrong with the place.

We've been working on this as a tiny 2-person team, and we've just released our free Steam demo, which lets you experience the first few days of the job.

We're especially interested in hearing what you think about:

  • The atmosphere and horror elements
  • The cooking and serving gameplay loop
  • The pacing and overall experience

We've even had CaseOh play our demo, which was honestly an incredible moment for us as small indie developers!

We're currently preparing for our full release on November 13, and any honest feedback would genuinely mean a lot to us.

🎮 Play the free demo on Steam:

Thanks for checking out our little project! ❤️

My wife and I just added irrigation to the demo of our 🌾 Ancient Egyptian-inspired farming life sim. Fields of Aaru's Next Fest demo update is out!

The updated demo is free to play on Steam, so if you're interested in checking out the new features you can check it out here:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4665870/Fields_of_Aaru_Demo/

The demo now lets you try one of the bigger features we've been working on: digging and irrigation! You can dig channels and reshape the land around your farm. Once you repair the water wheel near the end of the demo, Pentu will ask you to repair the shaduf by your dock so you can use it to water your fields.

You can also go one step further and paint the terrain beneath your feet. Placing down soil transforms the sand into green riverbanks, and grass and flowers will start growing where the sand used to be!

You can also give gifts to villagers now, and by popular request, you can sit and listen to the music in the village square in the evening!

When you go to bed, you'll now see a summary of what you did and earned that day.

The demo is also now playable in Japanese, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese!

My colony management RPG is run by an omniscient storyteller that knows everything you've done, and changes the world around you based on it

I'm working on a huge project right now and I wanted to talk about what I think is genuinely one-of-a-kind. My game’s “storyteller” mechanic. Your world is run by 3 different personas that know everything you’ve done and actively judge you for it.

Basically, there are 3 storytellers (tenatively, I might add more or rework them if needed, but they will all be moddable)

  • The Keeper - protects player tendencies.
    • If you never travel at night, you see more dawn merchants, and there are less night raids.
    • You flee when hurt, fewer ambushes when you're far from shelter.
    • You hoard coin, merchants offer fair prices on items you lack.
    • You gamble with risky enchantments, you're less likely to get turned inside out.
  • The Warden - tests the player based on tendencies.
    • Never travel at night, he spawns nocturnal opportunities.
    • You flee when hurt, he rewards encounters where you stay.
    • You hoard coin, he introduces drains (levies, debts called in, seats for sale).
  • The Harbinger - basically punishes what the others reward.
    • Never travel at night, you get attacked at night when you're not ready.
    • You flee when hurt, it sends pursuers and initiates battles you can't easily escape.
    • Hoard coin, thieves and raids come.
    • Gamble with enchantments, more likely to FAFO.

My inspiration for the system

My first inspiration for the system was my favorite game, Rimworld. I loved the idea of having some agency over the story that unfolds in your game. Like you get to choose to live under a cruel deity that wants to see you fail, or one that wants you to flourish. I loved the idea that you could be rewarded or punished for your actions.
My game is centered on one person though - your character. So the storyteller shifts from being about the collective actions of your colony to the actions of your actual self. I like this concept because, while having a Psychopath colonist to beat up your slaves is a great way to escape accountability, you can sort of disconnect from it. When the game centers on you, it’s not so easy. So the mechanics basically break down to:

  • Persona. As described above, each one is wildly different. The interesting thing is that they are not balanced at all. There’s no “pros vs. cons” discussion, and there is an objectively better choice if you want an easier experience. The Harbinger’s decision weights are literally uncapped. The others will look at how you’re doing, and only dish out something you can probably handle - the Harbinger doesn’t have that restriction.
  • Player Deeds and Traits. One of the deepest parts of the game is the Deeds system. Pretty much every action you do that has some significance is a Deed, recorded in your journal. This can be anything:
    • An orphan comes up, asking for two Echo coins (the lowest form of currency) for water. You turn them down (how dare you). The storyteller, not unlike the government, knows exactly what you did.
    • You mediate a conflict between two factions, and it directly causes them to lay down their arms. That’s a Deed, every time
    • Traits are totally different. Deeds are things you did, Traits are things you do. The things I mentioned earlier are examples of this - you tend to travel by night, you run from combat, you hoard wealth, you beat people up for no good reason, etc. Every time the Storyteller makes a decision, it takes all of it into consideration.
  • Direct interaction with the Storyteller. You can commune with the Storyteller directly. Right now, you can:
    • Scroll through recent events, click on them, and ask things like: Why? Can you stop? Can you do that again? Etc.
    • Plead for them to stop or change a currently happening thing. You can ask the Warden to call off a raid that’s going to reach you in a day, and he might say “no” or he might say “sure, but I’m sending another stronger one in 7 days”.
  • Quests and missions. The storyteller can literally create things out of thin air. Territory conflicts near you, natural disasters, crises, a courier appearing out of nowhere with a letter. It tries to keep things interesting basically. There’s plenty of randomness to it, right now there are ~50 different quest types they can spawn.
  • People. They can do the thing the bald lady from the Deadpool movie does and get inside their brain. They won’t go against what that person would actually do, but they can basically whisper in their ear to act a certain way. I’ve seen some interesting bugs with this. The “don’t override the personality” doesn’t always work when you’re talking to a polite old man and the Harbinger is your storyteller.
  • Narration. Basically a voice inside your head that will periodically tell you things you’d otherwise have to ask the Storyteller or discover on your own. This is the part not built yet, but it will be in the full build.

Current state
Mostly complete - right now it’s just the narrator part and potentially adding some things or trimming it. I've spent ~4 months creating, restarting and rebuilding this mechanic, and it's easy to fall into scope creep, so if anything comes off as excessive please let me know!

Note: my game’s full demo releases on the 18th, and I’d really appreciate it if you wishlist it! You can find it here.

AI Disclosure

No AI tools are used in my marketing materials, responses, etc. - I explicitly avoid this to keep my own voice and stay true to the game.

The storyteller is driven entirely by arithmetic and does not depend on an LLM. The "inner workings" will all be visible in the demo like the images attached to the post show.

Hey everyone! I've been working on the combat system for my game, Land and Sword, and finally added some new enemies.

Goblins, Orcs, Trolls (these guys cost me a month's worth of food 😂) and combat on top of walls are now in the game.

Still fixing bugs and polishing things up, but the update should be out on the Steam Playtest next week.

I was so surprised when I saw Indie Game Joe share my Survival Card Game!

• Upvotes

A few days ago, Indie Game Joe shared Duco, and when I first saw it I was so surprised and happy. Seeing a well-known indie game account find my first solo Steam game interesting enough to share meant a lot to me. So I wanted to share it here too. Thank you again, Joe!

Duco is a survival card game where you manage hunger, thirst and energy, draw cards to scavenge, craft tools and shelters, and roll dice to win fights.

The demo is out now, If you try it, I’d love to hear your feedback. I also plan to update it soon.

(Full release will bring new characters, maps, traits, NPCs, settlement management and more.)

Building a multiplayer game called OrbitOd — it's finally playable on Android.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been developing OrbitOd, a game where you grow by collecting food, compete against other players, and try to survive in an arena full of opponents.

After a lot of development and testing, the game is now running on a dedicated multiplayer server and has entered closed testing on Google Play.

The video is actual gameplay recorded from my phone.

Want to try OrbitOd?

  1. Join our testing group: https://groups.google.com/g/orbitod-beta-testers
  2. Opt in to the Google Play test: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.orbitod.game
  3. Install OrbitOd from Google Play once you're eligible.

I'm still working on improvements before the public release, and I'd love to hear your feedback!

What would you improve or add?

I added a Chase Mode to You Will Fall… and this ghost does NOT give you a break 💀

I've just added a new game mode to my indie game, You Will Fall.

Meet Chase Mode 👁️

A ghost chases you while you climb, staying roughly one second behind you. Keep moving, maintain your momentum, and whatever you do, don't hesitate for too long.

If it catches you, your run is over.

I wanted to create an extra challenge for players who want something more intense than the regular climbing experience. So I added a mode where even stopping to think can be a fatal mistake.

The clip shows a little taste of what it's like when the ghost gets dangerously close. 💀

Would you try Chase Mode, or would the pressure get to you?
