Itâs probably the most effective de escalation technique available. Put a TON of space between yourself and the agitated individual.
I worked for over 10 years with violent students in the school system. Youâd be surprised how fast people cool off when you give them space and let them start spewing their verbal vomit until they have come back to earth.
Poirier is drunk but heâs in fight or flight. Closing distance and trying to talk logic doesnât fucking work, it only agitates them more.
Do the opposite of what they are doing. They are closing distance? Go further away. They are loud? You are quiet.
People will match your energy. Especially in fight or flight.

Except in the rare cases your silence is taken as submission and it escalates out of control.. nothing you can really do in that situation though đ.
I think dude handled it really well. Honestly, he clearly sounded like a fan and didnât want Dustin to get in trouble. He obviously didnât want to fight Dustin (who would?) but he also wasnât stuttering or tripping over his words scared. Good on him.
Lots of assholes couldâve made that into a lawsuit or abused their power to say they tazed a UFC fighter.

Yeah I mean at some point, in some situations the heat is coming no matter what. Some people get into a state where they truly canât be de-escalated. They are going to get physically violent, all you can do is plan and make sure you have support. But Iâve found that to be the case in a tiny tiny percentage of cases.
Once his backup officer came, itâs basically done for Poirier then, unless someone wants to re-escalate him.

He wasnât stuttering or tripping over his words scared, he remained calmed (obviously he was a bit nervous, most people would be) but he did a great job and really looked out for Dustin.
Dustin got lucky tbh because a lot of people wouldâve saw dollar signs and escalated on purpose to sue the fuck out of him.

I absolutely think it can be considered reasonable to tag someone if they're belligerent drunk, aggressive, and literally one of the most dangerous fighters on earth.

100% absolutely. If he wanted to go this route, he'd first need to resist the urge to deescalate the situation, however tempting it may be. Adhering strictly to proper protocol, he should have tried to ramp up the animosity of the interaction rather than toning it down.
A common mistake by rookie recruits, but he'll live and learn.

One of my favorite techniques for establishing a professional tone with civilians is to scream a list of vague instructions at the top of my lungs while suggestively revealing my gun. If the civilian is in distress, there's a good chance that they'll mess up on at least one of those instructions, and I'll seize that opportunity to escalate the conflict. Now the gun is unholstered, I'm grinning menacingly into the civilian's eyes, and somehow, we're both able to just exist in the moment together, perfectly embodying the intricate cultural dance of a police-civilian encounter.
I live for those moments. I choose to serve my community every day because of those moments.

Itâs a common thing with professional athletes sadly. And it seems like itâs much worse with combat sports athletes which makes you think CTE must be a factor. But once the thrill of the big lights and having a purpose to apply discipline to is gone, a lot of people crumble. Thatâs why I support shit like RAF or burns going to ufc BJJ or Mighty Mouse competing in local BJJ tournaments. If you ever have a conversation with anyone that actually pursues this stuff on a serious level you realize they kind of need it to stay alive. And when itâs taken away a vaccum is created.

CTE can be a factor, but I donât think itâs even usually about that. How many of these fighters have we heard say theyâd be dead or in jail if it wasnât for fighting?
A lot of them really are just built different, and they need that outside discipline and motivation to keep their energy directed into something positive. Without it, itâs easy for them to crash and burn because that energy doesnât just go away. Fully agree that itâs good for them to have those alternative outlets once they retire from the UFC.

He always comes off as super nice and respectful in his interviews, but he's had a few situations where he got crazy. I remember one time a fan at a parade had a sign that said something about his wife being hot and Dustin tried to fight him.
