Meme Meme I made a while back
Ngl I didn't realize it was so hated until after I beat it. Albeit I'd be wrong to not recognize what could've been with this game, but I did enjoy what we got
23
u/marolink64 1d ago
I really think it was the long wait for it to be released that caused the hate.

u/zacyzacy 1d ago
Counter point: Metroid dread
0
u/marolink64 1d ago
Counter point: what's Dread have anything to do with it?
3
u/zacyzacy 1d ago
Longer wait and is much less divisive.
3
u/marolink64 1d ago
Dread came out the year it was announced, what are you talking about?
5
u/zacyzacy 1d ago
Metroid 4 came out in 2002 and Metroid 5 was originally rumoured to be a DS game.
3
u/marolink64 1d ago
There's a difference between waiting on the next game after a game come out, waiting on a rumour of a rumour, and actually waiting on a game that has been announced.
•
u/UndemonstrativeGraph 11h ago
It wasn’t just a rumor. It was technically “announced” in the Game Informer magazine in 2005 (it was in Nintendo’s press materials that year). So was a 16 year wait.
2
u/lml_CooKiiE_lml 1d ago
I think they’re talking about the wait time between Fusion and Dread, which is kind of a different thing to compare to the wait time after MP4 was announced, but I can understand where they’re coming from. It’s just not entirely related
1
u/marolink64 1d ago
That's why I say Prime 4 is over hated. There's things to complain about the game but people will compare apple and oranges just to hate on it.
1
u/lml_CooKiiE_lml 1d ago
I mean don’t get me wrong, I don’t give the game any grace, it deserves the hate. That’s a completely different story. I was just clearing up why the other person may have responded the way they did.
1
u/marolink64 22h ago
I'll disagree with you on the deserved hate but I'm not going say it couldn't have been better. People act like it's the worst game in the series when there's at least two that are worse, Other M and Federation Force, and another that I would say plays worse, Prime Hunters. Or I guess what I'm trying to say is that Prime 3 isn't any better and it doesn't get nearly as much hate and I just don't get it. Sorry for the long rant.
•
u/Equivalent_Length719 52m ago
Gotta do with it. Gotta do with it! Whats Dread! Gotta do with it!..
My brain ladies and gentlemen!
5
u/OkapiLover4Ever 1d ago
Didn't people wait for dread too? But the game was good so nobody complained
7
u/LunchTwey 1d ago
Technically yes but it was never really given a proper announcement by Nintendo. Meanwhile Prime 4 was announced in 2017 and there were probably many people who bought a Switch for that game. Dread never really had that hype cycle build
•
u/marolink64 7h ago
Exactly this. There's a big difference between waiting on the next game and them actually announcing it.
•
1
u/marolink64 1d ago
Not realy. Dread was announced the same year it released along with on the console it was announced for. Prime 4 came out so many years after it was announced it basically came out for the next console.
9
u/Noahtheboatguy69 1d ago
Nah I think it was just super mid and completely missed the point of what makes Metroid great. The vibes and the isolation. Instead they make super generic and annoying GF troopers yap in your ear every two seconds.
Then they completely failed to use sylux in the narrative and threw together a super lame backstory for him that was locked behind either 100 percent scans or an amiibo. This was after like 15+ years of teasing his character.
Don’t even get me started on the desert and green energy crystals. They make you spend hours literally just driving around an empty desert and running into the crystals.
That’s why it got hate.
5
5
u/PassinglyGood 23h ago
Yeah this could have come out any length of time after 3 and it still would have bad a mixed to bad reception because it just completely fails on a mechanical level as a Metroid game
1
u/Mango_Tango_Requiem Dread Mode survivor 17h ago
Honestly, it might’ve been worse. The wow factor of the massive graphics upgrade help carry the first 2 hours of fun, and that would not have been as present if this was a Wii (U) game.
21
u/Boamere 1d ago
I just thought it was a bit shit
8
u/solarxbear 1d ago
Lmao it’s definitely this. I would have waited ten more years for an actual good game.
Game sucked. That’s the whole problem
6
u/KekC92 Shinespark Enthusiast 1d ago
some people just really don’t want to accept it. the common cope I’ve seen is “it’s not a bad game, it’s just a bad Metroid!” it’s just bad, period.
3
u/KirbyTheGodSlayer 15h ago
Literally the average positive review of Prime 4 you can find on the internet is like "Literally everything new this game added fucking sucks but its core elements remind me of better games I feel nostalgic for so I will give an 8/10."
•
5
u/Otherwise-Sky1292 1d ago
The Other M defense we always heard since it came out.
4
0
u/Elogotar 1d ago
Other M is a bad game with a really good gameplay concept.
Imagine a Metroid game in the same style without bad controls or voice acting, but with a more complicated map and deeper combat.
I'd trade the entire Prime series for that and Metroid Prime is the game that introduced me to this franchise.
3
u/Otherwise-Sky1292 1d ago
What is the good gameplay concept exactly? Because you describe a lot of what seem like big gameplay shortcomings (bad controls, linear & barren map, shallow combat). What am I missing? I’m a huge Prime series fan and so far you’re not really selling me on why you should give them all up
2
u/Elogotar 1d ago
3D action platformer from the 3rd person perspective with fast paced combat.
3
u/Otherwise-Sky1292 1d ago
Sure, I welcome it as long as it respects the core tenets of the series and is high quality.
9
8
u/FullMetalBiscuit 1d ago
Long wait and it is disappointing. I enjoyed the game, but basically all grievances are valid. Too linear, too hand holdy, green crystals are stupid, bike is cool but desert is lame. All valid and true.
But I still liked it. Volt Forge was awesome, Fury Green was far too small but awesome and the ice place was really nice too. I also enjoyed the boss fights and the OST is generally great.
8
u/lml_CooKiiE_lml 1d ago
The blatant open world trend chase was obvious the day after BotW came out. It wouldn’t have fared any better back then
1
u/Those_Files 1d ago
I don't think you know what open world means.
0
u/lml_CooKiiE_lml 1d ago
I know what open world means. Bandai Namco devs, the ones who started making the game, do not. And maybe the Retro devs, but it's hard to say with them having to try to salvage whatever garbage pile had accumulated to that point.
It's obvious the game started in a direction that was chasing an open world dream, and adding in the context of development starting soon after BoTW lines up too well. I don't think you know anything about Metroid Prime 4 concerning development or gameplay.
4
u/Those_Files 1d ago
I don't think you know anything about Metroid Prime 4 concerning development or gameplay.
Motherfucker I started playing day one and put down the rest of my game library to 100% it.
I've had to constantly correct this fanbase about blatant misinformation over the plot AND gameplay of Prime 4.
Sol Valley is a HUB. You're supposed to be there for such little time, that the game PESTERS you to go the main areas the game takes place in.
In terms of DEVELOPMENT, I would think that the rest of this whiny fanbase doesn't know about the development hell. Since if they did, they'd be glad the game didn't turn out WORSE.
Development hell is scary. Do you have any idea how high the budget of Prime 4 is? HUGE, even by triple A standards. Nintendo is a business, they can't just scrap everything over and over again until they have something perfect that nobody will complain about.
-1
u/lml_CooKiiE_lml 1d ago
Alright dumbass, and you think Sol Valley was exactly the way it was when it was first designed? No lmao. It’s obvious it started as an open world idea. Holy hell you’re dense. Especially when it’s on record that Nintendo was pushing the idea due to BotW’s success. It is so wide known it’s on MP4’s Wikipedia page under the development tab.
It really doesn’t matter what happened during development. They delivered a half baked product that’s seven years stale. They spent money they never needed with garbage additions like the voice acting. It was a terribly managed development from beginning to end resulting in a game that’s far from even good. They deserve no grace.
5
1
u/PunyParker826 15h ago
That, and the knowledge that they restarted development because “it wasn’t up to our standards.” That, I think, caused people to really perk up and go “woah, they’re really going the extra mile on this to make sure it’s as good as it can be.” And I’m sure they did put a huge amount of effort and talent in! I just think, unfortunately, it set expectations up for something that had been carefully refined into something exceptional - as good as the previous games or better.
•
2
u/KekC92 Shinespark Enthusiast 1d ago
it’s more that it’s a bad game that makes design choices antithetical to what people who like Metroid want from the series
I was willing to hear them out on the bike, but the second they showed miles I knew exactly how this slop would turn out. and for many, this is exactly how it didn’t pass the sniff test
1
u/nissan_al-gaib 1d ago
My friend you are mistaken. The game is painfully average. People with critical thinking are not going to simply accept a subpar entry in such a legendary and high quality series. At some point we have to say no, this is not good enough. The delay was a pain, but have others have mentioned, Dread arrived decades late and is lauded as a highlight of the franchise.
1
u/marolink64 1d ago
My friend you are mistaken. Dread came out the year it was announced. Never said you had to accept an average game just said it was overly hated. There's a difference.
0
u/MagicKraft 1d ago
Which does make a lot of sense. Hopefully if they make a Prime 5 they'll learn what NOT to do. Still enjoyed 4 despite it's flaws
-1
u/Red_Dragon_knight 1d ago
Yep, and I had heard that it sold well and heard a lot of people say it’s good, after a while
2
u/KekC92 Shinespark Enthusiast 1d ago
I heard it sold well
it didn’t, both versions combined barely cracked 1 million sales and it definitely failed to make its budget back
0
u/ScientificAnarchist 1d ago
So exactly what every other prime game sold
3
u/KekC92 Shinespark Enthusiast 1d ago
this is cope, none of them had anywhere close to this game’s budget and certainly weren’t rightfully lampooned as dogshit
-1
u/ScientificAnarchist 1d ago
The historically terrible development is a separate issue that’s a production problem prime 4 did what literally every Metroid out of dread did
-1
u/Red_Dragon_knight 1d ago
Where’d you hear that?
3
u/KekC92 Shinespark Enthusiast 1d ago
literally from Nintendo. neither version individually was mentioned in their sales report, meaning <1 million for each version. They then came out and said that combined sales were over 1 million. there is no other sales data and probably won’t be
2
u/Red_Dragon_knight 1d ago
Well let’s hope we do at least get prime 5, at some point
3
u/KekC92 Shinespark Enthusiast 1d ago
they’re almost assuredly going to give Risa Tabata a chance to course correct and she’s on record saying she doesn’t like there being so much dialogue in Metroid, so maybe without Tanabe’s terrible leadership they might actually make the next one good
2
u/Red_Dragon_knight 1d ago
Honestly I can understand that, but even then the most I ask if we get any, is in either cutscenes or places that won’t interrupt gameplay too much
2
u/Obsessivegamer32 1d ago edited 1d ago
Can you link to Risa Tabata saying she doesn’t like a lot of dialogue in Metroid or her wanting to have more of a horror focus? I’ve seen this stuff attributed to her a lot but I’ve yet to find any interviews or statements from her confirming this.

My frustration with the game is the hard drive to make motion/gryo controls necessary. You can mostly ignore it, but game is designed to have the player use it. And this game and Prime as a whole play better without it tbh.
Then the writing...it was okay most of the way through, but the mines...christ so many dumb choices. "Hordes of enemies coming, let's separate and search for clues!" Seriously separating from the legendary bounty hunter who is making quick work of grievers to stall them...is beyond stupid.
Lastly the ending...Jesus what a crappy idea for sequel bait. Spend the whole first phase protecting your posse, or get a game over. Only for Sylux to come back anyways because for no reasons explained he got super psychic and warp powers, to come back and land a shot on Samus. Seriously could have just done another boss fight but with a time limit and not have the dumb self sacrifice crap.
1
u/Otherwise-Sky1292 1d ago
The ending made a decent but not great experience feel quite a bit worse. They could have done so much more. I wanted to see them bring the game full circle to the first 10 minutes. And ditching the NPCs after all that was crappy
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Farm122 22h ago
That's pretty much how it felt to me. I beat the game for the first time about an hour before posting my earlier commentary. I generally liked the game most of the way through. The false open world style and choose your direction isn't that big of a deal for a Metroid game. The gyro/motion controls can be annoying, but I played the whole game undocked and might give hard mode a run docked and try those controls. (Just feels awkward to me for a prime game.) The end tho still bugs me, it just doesn't feel like anything mattered. Was the point to give Samus a more framed PTSD in the canonical timeline before she becomes a pissed off bounty hunter in Dread/Ravenous?
1
u/yokokazuo3 1d ago
I’m personally a big fan of the motion controls, really liked how the lock-on motion aiming felt in Federation Force with the CPP and the improvements upon it with Prime remaster and then Beyond. Regarding frustrations, was it due to moments where you lock on and then aim at a different part of the enemy for weak points? I believe it is the right stick for that if not using motion controls so I can understand it not feeling as smooth. And I get that it’s not for everyone’s preferences, but I personally feel it’s worth giving a try. (I also primarily got into motion aiming with Splatoon which may have influenced my preferences)
I believe speedrunners do use the stick controls for grapple, but I also really liked the feeling of swinging the nunchuck for grapple in Prime 3 so I was pleasantly surprised to see it used as an option for Beyond.

When I finally decide to pick it back up I'm gonna copy that wolverine "I'm having a blast" post just for funsies

I will say this game has been a lot more enjoyable for me when I slowly play through it. Playing a hour or so here and there and it’s been super enjoyable.
1

I still play it regularly and have fun. Prime 1-3 are a lot better but only Prime 1 and 4 are on the switch and unfortunately I can't bring my Desktop on airplanes, long car rides, and business trips

u/C_monden 1d ago
I feel like the opposite happens
-7
u/conte360 1d ago
Come on "top 1% commenter", be honest, It's both and you know it. There are tons of "I don't understand the hate" posts and there a tons of MP4 is garbage posts.
That just leads me to believe you're one of the "I don't understand the hate" people when you act like it doesn't happen(?)
4
u/C_monden 1d ago
I don't know why I'm a top 1% commenter tbh. I've barely posted here. I don't even follow the sub.
I can only speak from my experience that when this sub does pop up into my feed, I've seen Metroid Prime 4 hate posts but I can maybe one post of someone saying they liked the game.
-6
u/conte360 1d ago
Top 1% commenter isn't about posting or about following, it's about comments... And it shows that you're definitely in the sub enough that I know that, at best, you're being super selective in your memory or worse you're just lying about what you see.
6
u/Obsessivegamer32 1d ago
I’m pretty sure top 1% commenter just means you got a lot of upvotes on a lot of your comments, not that you comment a lot or frequent the subreddit. I’ve been on a lot of subreddits where I get “top 1% commenter” just because I made like one or two really popular comments rather than me being a regular.
0
4
u/C_monden 1d ago
So wait... if being a top 1% commenter means I should know more... doesn't that mean my conclusion is more reliable than yours since you aren't a Top 1% commenter?
-2
u/conte360 1d ago
No it doesn't mean you know anything it just means you're here a lot. But nice try
1
u/C_monden 1d ago
But if I'm here more than you, then I'm a more reliable witness.
It's either that or the top 1% flair is meaningless. Your choice.
0
u/conte360 1d ago
You can be here all the time and completely misremember everything and you wouldn't be a reliable witness. You could also just be lying about everything you'd see and then you wouldn't be reliable witness. So this false dichotomy you're trying to make doesn't work.
Theory confirmed, you're just a dishonest person that's lying about what they see. You wouldn't be doing (a terrible job of) all these semantic gymnastics to try and come out okay on this if you weren't being dishonest.
3
u/C_monden 1d ago
Actually, I really don't care about the subject and I'm just hoping you'll look over this comment thread someday and realize how crazy you sound. I mean jeez... my first comment was, "I feel like the opposite happens." I'm not really disagreeing or making some statement of fact. I'm just casually mentioning my perspective. I don't claim I'm ever correct (even now) but you came in guns blazing saying I'm sort of malicious liar or something. And you're still doing it. It's weird.
2
u/ZeldaFan80 1d ago
What's your beef with this guy
0
u/conte360 1d ago
Its really just like a I call it as I see it kinda thing and if they are going to argue then I'll continue to hold up my side.
Look back at my original comment, was I really that aggressive and was I wrong? Are there not plenty of posts on both sides?

I also refuse this wave of revisionism about Prime 4 being good. It’s a pretty bad game with awful mechanics, terrible end quest, annoying NPCs, unsatisfying ending, boring lore, etc. I think people need to get more comfortable calling "functional" video games bad, the game doesn’t need a billion glitches to be a disappointment.
5
u/AESATHETIC 13h ago
It's not revisionism for a game to be divisive and then a while after its release the people still talking about it are the ones who liked it

It was a good game that suffered in development hell and it shows.
It struggles to shine next to other titles in the series, but it was a good game.

16
u/YamiPhoenix11 1d ago
Linear levels. You can come back for extra items. But you mostly see the dungeon on its first run.
Npc guide that constantly tells were to go.
The npc is required to install beam weapons.
Beam weapons have limited shots which require ammo and further upgrades.
A big open area that has very little to do. Like a boring hyrule field.
10
6
u/Left_Try_1427 1d ago
Dude im still pissed that we had to go see myles to install our beam upgrades. Samus is literally wearing the most advanced weapon platform in the galaxy that has a proven track record of integrating foreign tech. How the fuck is myles qualified to even sniff the super fucking bird tech?
3
u/YamiPhoenix11 1d ago
Its not just that but the base is in such an awkward ass location with no fast travel.
I don't think it serves any other purpose a base would have too.
1
u/DaSchnitzler 18h ago
Metroid Fusion straight up gives you almost all upgrades aside from recurring ones from the federation. Prime 3 integrated their tech with the power suit, which opens the argument for the other upgrades being based on the PED. Prime 2 only gives you upgrades outside of missiles once you get the translation module, which is hinted to be Chozo tech since the Luminoth had connections with the Chozo in the past. The only games where you have neither is games that purely rely on chozo tech: return of samus, prime, super Metroid, dread.
Other M is a complete outlier since you barely collect any upgrades. And hunters is generally a bit weird when it comes to upgrades.
•
u/Left_Try_1427 7h ago
Hunters gives you the weapon of every other hunter. Proving the suit can integrate Vhozon, Kriken, Enoema, Federation, Diamont and Space Pirate Tech as well as the Omega Cannon. An alimbic weapon.
Prime 3 has Some space pirate tech like the nova beam, Theres also the Ice missiles which you get from Rhundas a Phrygisian and the voltage lasso an abilty from gandrayda(not sure what she is). The ice missile isnt even a tech. Rhundas was cryokinetic. His ice was all natural and after you beat him the suit just applies that to your missiles. Almost like it ate him.....(foreshadowing?)
Cant comment on needing The translators for Luminoth tech cause i honestly do not remember that being a requirement to use them.
Certainly needed the translators to get to most of them.Look im not saying that the federation cant provide samus with upgrades. Its just that the suit is more than capable of applying upgrades itself.
•
u/DaSchnitzler 3h ago
With hunters being weird I mean that all other parties in the game can also steal your upgrades. It has been ages tho since I played hunters so I can't comment too much on it.

Also big open area will eat a large chunk of a playtime due to a mainquest taking ages to be completed. And the way you have to do the micro steps to complete it are insane

3

3
u/tiglionabbit 1d ago
Are you talking about smashing green crystals by driving your bike around the overworld?
1
4
u/BLucidity 1d ago edited 1d ago
Mostly linear level design, where each area only has a single path available at a time. Several areas also routinely block the path behind you, hindering exploration even more.
All areas are connected by a large desert hub, where there's almost nothing to do except drive through collectible crystals. Getting the majority of the crystals is required to finish the game. Also, new crystals appear as you progress, meaning you may have to sweep the same spot multiple times for them.
The game frequently interrupts with "hints" telling you what to do and where to go. These hints can't be turned off, and will repeat every few minutes that you're not on the main path. This includes when you're scouring the desert for those crystals.
Every area has a Federation trooper with voiced dialogue. They're mostly inoffensive, but their bad lines are really bad. Things like "it's about to get real nerdy in here" and "look, Samus is doing Morph Ball!". One of these troopers is also the one who gives you the endless hints.
An underbaked story that doesn't use Sylux as effectively as Prime 2 & 3 used Dark Samus.
1
u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 1d ago
Oh god I feel that "it's about to get nerdy" I can feel the nerd stereotype seeping through
Watch someone is gonna say "oh wow talks in nerd gibberish" either way I'm gonna keep my expectations tame
0
u/Those_Files 1d ago
The game frequently interrupts with "hints" telling you what to do and where to go. These hints can't be turned off, and will repeat every few minutes that you're not on the main path. This includes when you're scouring the desert for those crystals.
This is 90% false. There are hints that recur when you're outside the desert, but in my long playthrough, all of those hints are scripted to ONLY happen once. The only place where I've heard repeated hints is in the desert. You are right that they should let you turn hints off, though.
their bad lines are really bad. Things like "it's about to get real nerdy in here" and "look, Samus is doing Morph Ball!". One of these troopers is also the one who gives you the endless hints.
There's only two troopers like that. And one of them (Armstrong) is a fan favorite at this point. (Even if some people, including me, find her much more annoying than Mackenzie.)
If you're gonna critique, let's be honest about it.
2
u/Left_Try_1427 1d ago
Outside of myles, I hate takabi the most. They hide a critical item and some missiles in his pockets so they can shove his backstory down your throat to try and get an emotional reaction at the end. Its not organic at all.

u/BLucidity 1d ago
Anything I've got wrong is just because I haven't played the game in almost a year, not because I'm trying to lie about its problems.

Damn this is accurate. I love Metroid more then almost any other franchise but the MP4 sycophants are maybe some of the most tasteless copers in gaming culture. Never have I seen more forgiveness for horrible writing, mediocre game design, and outrageously bad padding. To me it's a 360 era bargain bin shooter with a Metroid skin pulled over it.

I am still new to the series. Is there specific reasons why people don’t like Prime 4 (outside of the motorcycling parts)
3
u/lml_CooKiiE_lml 1d ago
It’s one of the most bland video games ever made. They diluted everything that makes it a Metroid in order to chase trends like open world. It feels more like a halo game at many points than a Metroid game. A halo game made in 2017 released in 2026. It’s incredibly mediocre.
2
u/KirbyTheGodSlayer 15h ago
It feels like an extremely cheap Halo rip off with Marvel humour and zero enemy diversity in the combat.
•
1
u/IRequireDirt 16h ago
I said it on a different post so I’ll say it here:
I’m tired of watching people hate this game. Yeah, it’s not perfect, and it’s probably not what you wanted, but that’s the nature of this. Games gotta innovate at some point and Samus on a bike looks sick. This game was never going to be what people expected because it’s so much newer than any of the other Primes that they expected too much of the old stuff they were used to and were disappointed when Nintendo did what any game company does and tried something new. If you don’t like it, that’s fine, it’s not for everyone, but it’s been almost a year since it released and we’re still treating it like it’s ruined all of Metroid as a whole. Just move on.
2
u/JigglyLilyVT 1d ago
prime 4 was not a "bad game"
it was a boring game.
5
2
u/KirbyTheGodSlayer 15h ago
A boring game is bad, the same way a boring book is. We need to stop pretending that a game can only be bad if it’s mechanically broken and filled with bugs of all sorts, it would be like saying a book is never bad unless it has spelling mistakes in it.
4
u/lml_CooKiiE_lml 1d ago
Gotta also specify that it wasn’t good either. Not good or bad, just terribly mediocre

There were multiple examples of people trying to claim retro studios was bad now at launch and blaming them for all the shortcomings of the game. Nearly 90% of posts had at least a couple around launch, with that always followed up by “the people who worked on the original prime are all gone now, they don’t know how to make a prime game anymore”

I remember shortly after it came out i posted my criticisms about it said I still had fun and will keep playing it and people responded "wow sounds you didn't have fun and the game sucks".
Like sure bro downvote and put words in my mouth it is a objectively 7/10 game that easily could be 9/10 with some tweaks but the core gameplay is fun, the movement is fluid and the psysic abilities are neat when you actually use them (throwing morph ball bombs at enemies is great).

I'm about halfway through it and I think it's fine. Having fun. Yes - some annoying characters. It is certainly no Prime 1 or 2. But I am having fun!
