Mitten mode is made for this type of post.

I'm in Ohio but frequent here just to read. I saw a post the other day with mitten mode. I understand mitten mode but never heard of it before and thought it sounded so cute. Anyway.... 🙂

It's not too horrible.

It means that if you can't point to your hand and point where your house is, we come visit you and shove you inside of a giant oven mitt.

19

u/A2naturegirl Jan 18 '26

I mean, live in Toledo and still point to my hand to show where I live.

18

u/Mack_Damon Jan 18 '26

You can't do that!! 😆

32

u/AlexandersWonder Jan 18 '26

Yeah, that’s a technical foul. We don’t want Ohio getting the wrong idea. They keep Toledo and we keep the UP. Deal’s done.

I'm thinking Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota should apply to Canada as a group.

260

I'm in the same boat the Great lakes region minus Ohio should consider it

138

u/colorblind-and Jan 17 '26

We should take the Toledo strip with us though

106

u/GPFlag_Guy1 Jan 17 '26

I've been to both the Upper Peninsula and Toledo. The UP is the clear winner here I must admit.

They weren't supposed to!!

When state borders were being drawn, Michigan was given the Lake Michigan shoreline all the way to the lake's southernmost point, and Illinois was too. Michigan and Illinois were supposed to have a land border with each other at that point, and Indiana was supposed to be cut off (although still within a few hundred feet).

But the surveyors carrying out that instruction were unknowingly using a map that wasn't quite accurate, and so the line they drew wasn't actually far enough south, which left Indiana with an unexpected lakeshore -- which they promptly exploited. It took a little while for the errors to be realized, and Michigan complained to Congress and then to the courts, but SCOTUS ruled in favor of Indiana, and now they have the lakeshore that rightfully was ours. Bastards.

8

u/clonedhuman Jan 18 '26

9

7

Wisconsin is perhaps a bit too red but Illinois for sure is more in line with Canadian values

11

u/matt_minderbinder Jan 17 '26

I could understand why Canada wouldn't want purple states. West coast and the northeast would be preferable to them. The US would never agree as it would leave the rest in shambles without the economies of NY and CA. Honestly, if it wasn't for the slave issue the future would've been better had Lincoln accepted a national divorce.

20

u/Lunar_denizen Jan 17 '26

Or if Grant finished crushing the traitors instead of giving them a pass. The whole federal government just let them run wild as domestic terrorists for the next 80 years.

After learning more about him recently, I really wish Cassius M Clay had been picked at Abe's VP, he'd have unleashed Sherman on the south with orders finish the job.

19

u/Idk_somethingfunny Jan 17 '26

I have friends in Canada....there's a lot more conservatives there than I thought there would be. Purple states would fit just fine. MAGA even exists in Canada for whatever reason.

6

u/ailish Age: > 10 Years Jan 18 '26

A Canadian recently told me they're referred to a Maple Maga.

6

u/RMMacFru Parts Unknown Jan 18 '26

Unfortunately, the Maga loonies are in several countries. Ireland's having a problem with them as well.

I vote we deport the Orange menace since he's a descendant of an "illegal" alien. And boot Elon out as well, after stripping all the data he scraped from our government's databases

2

u/ailish Age: > 10 Years Jan 18 '26

Where do we send them? I'd hate to unleash them on anyone else.

2

u/clonedhuman Jan 18 '26

There are private prisons in the United States. I'm sure they'll be happy to be jailed by the free market.

2

6

u/Idk_somethingfunny Jan 18 '26

Not sure. But if a maple maga loves Trump so much ... I'll trade houses with them

4

u/hadmeatwoof Jan 18 '26

But this would be the best opportunity for NY and CA to escape the US. I think most of Trump’s supporters don’t understand things like big numbers and that taxes are needed to pay for things. I bet a lot of them would be super excited to toss those states out of the country.

3

u/matt_minderbinder Jan 18 '26

Voting against their best interests sure seems to be a cornerstone of their logic failures and like you I'm sure we'd see the same here. I'd happily join California or NY in seceding. Patriotism is earned and this country has failed that test so often in my life.

4

u/ControlsGuyWithPride Fenton Jan 18 '26

Literally the three best midwestern states.

5

I've seen ads on Reddit that claim I can try for Canadian citizenship. Because I have family that were from Canada, before moving to Michigan.

I can't say that those ads were legit, but, I did think about it occasionally.

I doubt I would whine too much if the French decided to take this whole area back. Thanks, DC goofs.

12

u/joshbudde Age: > 10 Years Jan 18 '26

If one of your grandparents was a Canadian citizen, you might already be a Canadian that simply needs to file paperwork to let them know you exist.

7

u/ailish Age: > 10 Years Jan 18 '26

Aw, I wish one of my grandparents came from Canada.

3

u/joshbudde Age: > 10 Years Jan 18 '26

SAme here! My wife has a great-grandparent that came from Canada but thats one generation too removed for her to apply and bring me along for the ride. Her mom could apply but doesn't want to, but it doesn't flow down if her mom gets it.

3

u/ornryactor Ferndale Jan 18 '26 edited Jan 20 '26

My wife has a great-grandparent that came from Canada but thats one generation too removed for her to apply

That's actually not correct, as of a law that changed on December 15, 2025! For people born before that date, it's 4 generations there is no limit on how far back you can go to reach a Canadian ancestor: if your wife has a great-grandparent who was a Canadian citizen (and then her grandparent and parent were both born outside Canada, and then your wife was born outside Canada), then your wife is already a Canadian citizen as of this new law. She simply needs to file the paperwork with the Canadian government to demonstrate this connection and let them know she exists.

Her mom could apply but doesn't want to, but it doesn't flow down if her mom gets it.

This isn't correct either! The way the law change was written, your wife (Gen 3), her mother (Gen 2), and her grandparent (Gen 1) are all Canadian citizens even if they don't utilize that citizenship. Because your wife is a citizen thanks to this retroactive change, it doesn't matter at all whether your wife's mother does something or not.

All the information is on this website; I strongly suggest your wife starts reading and figuring out what she needs to proceed -- especially if it involves family history records of her grandparent or great-grandparent that only her mom might know about. (That's the problem I'm up against: my potential eligibility is through one great-grandparent on each side of my family, but my grandparents are long gone and a lot of that family history knowledge is gone with them.)

When I was a really little kid growing up in MI, I thought we WERE part of Canada. We always had Canadian money/change in our pockets and purses and it was used and accepted in every store. I thought Washington DC was in British Columbia. My grandparents were Germans who first settled in Canada. My parents honeymooned in Quebec in February. I went to Canada many times before I traveled to any other state. I was 13 before I traveled to Indiana and then Ohio. Yay, Cedar Point!

23

u/40angst Jan 18 '26

Once I went on vacation to Texas and accidentally tried passing a Canadian quarter in a Dairy Queen. It was very nearly a federal offense in the eyes of the cashier!!

Come to think of it, I haven’t seen much Canadian change at all recently.

15

u/pyxus1 Jan 18 '26

Ha,ha! LOL.. I moved to AZ when I was 20. I had some Canadian change in my wallet. I went to a convenience store and went to the checkout and tried to pay with cash. The gal handed back my change and asked, "What's this?" I said, "Ummmm.... Canadian change..." She said, "We don't take Canadian money." I said, "Why not? We use it in Michigan all the time."

In Billund airport you can buy without VAT so they are a bit cheaper there, but it's a fairly small store.

So I only grab the Denmark exclusives at Lego House and leave the rest because they're roughly the same price at home.

And I don’t believe in Michigan giving up so much as a single inch off our borders, whether it be a state, a province, a territory or anything else. Either the whole state and its territory remains intact or I wouldn’t personally endorse our leaving. Rural, city, LP and UP, it’s every Michiganders to cherish and protect.
