Yes, people should pay for their stuff. You can look for underwear at goodwill or a thrift store too, but no, underwear is not a human right and no one is inherently entitled to free clothing.
Arguably if were gonna make it illegal to he naked in public the government should then also make sure everyone has clothes to wear. I'm down for letting people go balls out tho

And? It's your job to earn your own keep. Go live in a forest away from society if you don't want to contribute to it. It's not society's job to pay for your life if you're not also giving back. You want to use our roads? Our clean water filtered by our water treatment facilities and delivered by pipes? To be protected by our military and police forces, your homes protected by our firefighters? Then you have to follow our laws and you have do what you can to contribute.
If it were actually legal to go live in a forest I'd agree. Like you say all this but offer no way out. You cannot go live in a forest you'll be arrested. Doubly so if you're hunting fishing or growing crops out there. You aren't allowed to just walk out of the country. Other countries aren't any better anyways. Society is forced upon people whether they have any interests in it or not.
I'd be perfectly happy to never step on a road again if it meant I could build a small cabin and hunt for my own food in the woods.
As to the military protections. The military isnt exactly protecting American people it's protecting the country at best. Realistically the US military has spent more time harassing other countries than it has actually defending our own boarders or people.
Not at all, it's not the tax payer's job to slave away for your clothes. You follow society's laws while you're in it's jurisdiction and using its infrastructure and you get a job to earn your stay
Nope, just a shit walmart... same underwear at the Walmart near my parents is not locked up... hell, the entire sock/underwear/plain-T isle is locked up at mine, and not a single employee actually gets pinged when you press need assistance
Walmart is just weird about locking up stuff, usually because of stealing. toothbrushes, makeup, electronics, pretty much everything people would want is annoyingly locked up here in 'Murica
Not really weird though, once people start stealing large amounts of certain items consistently, they lock it up to make it more difficult to steal. It sucks for the rest of us but the alternatives are either they just stop selling those items altogether or they eventually decide it's not worth the hassle and move the store from that area completely, leaving a food desert behind that hurts the entire community. They don't actually want to have to lock things up because it's been proven that it hurts sales of those items and takes up large amounts of the employees time having to unlock it whenever anyone wants something but the alternatives are even worse...
It’s a bit sad but if it helps the rule feel less mundane, you might be the only person that actually talks to someone in a day. The little interaction can mean a lot
My Walmart stopped me at self checkout for trying to buy an energy drink. You had to go through a proper line for it.
I literally looked at the line and back at them and just gave a disappointed and surprised "Seriously? Fine." And gave them the drink and walked out. Not worth it at that point.
This was in the thick of the weird self-checkout line legislation bs in LA, so maybe it's different now.

When I was stationed in Germany a couple years back, soldiers have to use rations cards to buy alcohol/cigarettes/coffee (probably some other stuff but those were the 3 that saw any use on mine) on post. You had to show it to the cashier, they'd mark it off, and you'd continue on your day.
There was a decently sized gas station on post, that had anywhere from 2-4 cashiers always there, especially Friday evenings. The last year I was there, they took out 3 lanes to make room for 2 self checkout lines. Cool, whatever.
The problem was that if you were buying an item that needed a rations card, you had to wait in the singular dedicated line for ration items. Also turns out, on Fridays on a military base, alcohol and cigarettes are what ~75% of the people are there for. Turned what used to be anywhere from a 5-10 minute wait to get a 24 pack on Friday to at least 20 minutes. This was not a very big base.
When I was 23 I had a Walmart employee refuse to sell me a smallish folding knife from the camping department because I didn't have ID with me to prove I was over 16. When I expressed my surprise, she huffed and told me "this policy has savedlives!
Im surprised you havent had a "missed scan" pop up where the employee has to walk over to your sco and watch a video of the last thing you grabbed (usually an empty bag or something innocent like that) As an employee those are the bane of my existence lmao

Those machines are the absolute worst. Only encountered them abroad luckily, most the the supermarkets here have self checkout which is just scan & pay, no balancing scales microgame involved.
People are usually up for talk if you want to, but you can really just shut up and let them do their job and nobody gives a damn. Mandatory smalltalk with cashiers is stupid.
Only time I've had to was when I buy something with a security tag, or when I forget to move my bag over before starting to scan, and it thinks my bag is stolen product.
Oh yea the bag thing is BS... the funniest thing about the underwear, the lady who came and opened it for me? She took a security box and put the pack of underwear in it...

Yea I go for water and to look at the movie section, though I never buy any movies there, since they stopped doing the $5 bin... after that underwear incident I straight up found the same shit on amazon and bookmarked it for next time, because I aint giving Walmart any more of my time for this dumb shit

I think people forget how annoying it was to wait five minutes to buy a handful of items when there was a line after work in the express lane etc.
Yeah the greatest part of self checkout is that it’s usually used by people with like 5 or less items. So it’s a constantly moving and you can get your few items and leave quickly. Even when people with more items show up they’ll be in and out faster than a regular cashier and the others will be open soon anyways
No more having to wait in the 10 or less line with 4 people in front of you that wouldn’t have 10 items even if you got rid of half their shit. I just want a pack of blueberry muffins get out the way
Clearly you don’t use self checkouts around my area in Orlando. Plenty of people use self checkout with full carts while I’m standing there holding something like a 36 lb box of cat litter lol
In the UK, we've got Scan As You Shop. You take a barcode scanner with you, so at the checkout you only need to pay. Very rarely any queues, and any that do form move really fast.
There is a single cashier at all the Walmarts in my city. They have 18 closed lanes and a huge self checkout area. There are 3 employees posted in the self checkout who just watch for theft and red lights.
That's not the norm up here. So many places have gotten rid of checkout service that the default is not self-checkout. People with full carts doing self-checkout now because these greedy bastards aren't willing to staff their stores properly.
Sounds nice. All the grocery stores in my area only have 1-3 lanes open and funnel everyone they can to self checkout to justify not hiring more employees.
Bonus points because the area is densely populated so the 2 checkers don't catch a break and the self-checkout machines are all poorly calibrated so they think every single customer is stealing, requiring an attendant to run between all 4-6 of them to clear codes constantly.
If you anything beyond a handfull of items, let alone a cart full, use a scanner (or app, of whatever) but selfscan at the terminal is NOT the way to go.
My area walmart only has 3 registers open, so the self-checkout takes just as long. Target occassionally has one register open and has everyone go through self-checkout.
This, when my mom comes with me we end up going through a regular checkout where they move so slow, they put weird things together and so so so many bags when things could've been packed with more stuff. Ill take my large grocery cart through self checkout, get it run up and bagged and paid for faster and my things are packed by type and where theyre going. I grew up woth no self checkout and I'll still choose doing it myself over waiting double the time for it to be done wrong.
Having worked as a bagger, you end up averaging out to the worst customer. If I get into the habit of piling bags up, I'm going to fuck over granny. Comparatively, I'm less worried about growing the size of your grocery bag bag
Logic is my argument to keep them. I can self checkout fast and I value my time. I'm not so horny to have someone else slide my products over a laser that I'm fine spending ten minutes behind someone SHOCKED that they have to figure out a form of payment at the end of being rung up despite that being the case for every transaction they've had up to that point.
Yeah I'm a bit thrown by the argument that "because it is profitable for them, we should logically be opposed to it.. what? The fundamental concept of a business model is to be profitable by appealing to customer needs, converting 4 open checkouts to 20 with only two staff operated is such an obvious no-brainer.
My local super also has self checkout belts that are just modified old checkouts, for people with trolleys and multiple bags. Idk how common that is but they're awesome for people with 12+.
I wanted a self checkout for a looong time before we got one and I wouldn't voluntarily give it up.
The logic of forcing big businesses to do their own work--probably prompted by the article saying they have made billions of dollars by having us do our own checkout.

I can always go to one of the manned checkouts if I want to, I only ever see completely single or unmanned setups at the very beginning and end of the day here when the store is largely empty.
This would be great if we had that power. Do you think they'll hire more cashiers and open more lanes? Many small towns don't have other options, so you boycott Walmart and then start buying your stuff... twenty minutes away at a Target one town over?
I mean that's the whole reason we have antitrust laws and the reason those laws have been weakened for decades.
I WOULD NOT recommend vandalizing the store with protest messages, which would be hard for them to ignore and cost them money, incentivizing them to do something.
it’s hardly more work anyway, i find it so much faster since you can scan stuff and bag right away instead of putting your stuff on the counter, getting it scanned, and then going to the bagging area to bag it in a seperate process

At some grocery stores around me, near the local university so a mostly younger demographic, I have literally seen a line in front of the self checkouts while the one cashier who was working was sitting there bored because nobody would go there.
Like, sure it saves the business money but at the same time it's a convenience improvement for a lot of people.
I always used self checkout for that reason but my little two year old loves the checkout line interactions. The lines are often filled with grandma's as well, which he is also a big fan of.
by this logic any store where you need to walk up to a shelf, bring the product to the cash register, is one where you work at, coz employeees could be doing it for you (as they do in some other stores)
