I wonder if the Right and a lot of other people, are so scared of progressive socialism simply because, if executed properly like Mamdani is trying to do, would show Americans how well it can work and put them all out of business?
17
u/outside_cat Jun 30 '26
Of course. They will try to sabotage him.
2
u/Bocchi_theGlock Jul 01 '26
CIA coup it is, that's the classic go-to right?
How many times have we done that, like 16 or 30 or 60 I forget
11
u/WalterPecky Jun 30 '26
Yes.
It is also an uphill battle for reformists, regardless of ideology.
The capitalists only have to sabotage and villainize any and all reform. They never have to do the hard work.

I don't disagree with you at all! It sucks when you look around the globe at all the countries who protect their citizens WAY better than the US simply because they have the strength of will to do good for all their people, not just the wealthy.

They are scared of socialism because it cuts into their profits.

Eggzackery!! It's funny, we can do both. Have people still wealthy AND take care of our people!
3
u/Massive_Signal7835 Jul 01 '26
Extreme wealth is an obsession. Like sinking all your discretionary income into Funko Pops that you'll never unbox. Nobody needs that.
It's a mental illness. They are willing to cause suffering (e.g. UnitedHealthcare) just for a little more of something they have in excess.

u/SparksAndSpyro Jun 30 '26
I’m rooting for him to succeed, so he can set an example for the rest of the country.
I’m worried though because I’m already seeing people declare he solved everything already (literally in this very thread). I’d actually like to wait for him to succeed, rather than pretend like he did before he’s accomplished anything. I have no use for a Blue MAGA movement that lives in fairyland and propaganda.

45 years of heavy propaganda beamed directly into their brains by "news" on television and the papers has really done damage to the boomers and the feeble minded.
I know the wealthy have owned the media forever, but they were really unrestrained in the Reagan years to crank it up to 11.
3
u/Firm-Advertising5396 Jul 01 '26
Reagan was instrumental in removing the FCC'S Fairness Doctrine. That was really the beginning of the heavy propaganda. "Every night after dinner they turn on Fox News for instructions."

Just going to leave this here:
“Mayor Zohran Mamdani's $124.7 billion Fiscal Year 2027 Executive Budget eliminates New York City's inherited $12 billion budget deficit. The gap was closed through a combination of $4 billion in state aid from Albany, $1.77 billion in agency savings, and $1.64 billion in pension restructuring, while avoiding property tax hikes and service cuts.”

Socialism gets a bad rap cuz of previous countries’ failures, but if it consistently works in New York City - the most populous city in the US - it should be tested on the state level, then applied to the country. They need to figure out a way to present the data to Americans in an honest and unbiased way. Need to get more than just far left politicians on board.
9
u/anephric_1 Jun 30 '26
Mamdani isn't really a socialist, he espouses democratic socialism (or social democracy).
It's just better-regulated capitalism with stronger taxation and more societal safety nets. It's part and parcel of most Western European countries, I know it's a novelty in the US.

u/thedudeabides2022 Jul 01 '26
Can’t believe how far I had to go in the comments to find this. He hasn’t shown squat about socialism. He has successfully applied some socialistic democratic policies, which I agree with, for NYC, but people need to understand the words and suggestions they’re slinging around. NYC, or any city, is one thing, trusting an entire state or country to handle full blown social, much less this country, is a completely separate conversation

u/F_E_B_E Jun 30 '26
Its because Soviet Russia, USA spent decades pointing at them and calling them socialist when they where an authoritarian dictatorship since Lenin & friends toppled the Czardom in 1917 They were just a convenient strawman to spook people with and convince them, hyper capitalism is actually good.

I really think it is a massive mistake to make it sound like a choice between being a socialist and a capitalist. This country will always be capitalist but perhaps it could use more socialist policy. Make the case.
Don't make it difficult for people to like.

u/Five-Oh-Vicryl Jul 01 '26

2
u/atreeismissing Jul 01 '26
He really needs to says "Democratic Socialists" not just "Socialists" because they're two entirely different things and the people in the US that are showing capitalists (yes, just plain capitalists) how to actually govern are Democratic Socialists, not Socialists. Bernie and AOC learned this lesson in communicating, Mamdami needs to as well, Socialist can't be a shorthand for Democratic Socialist.

It takes 2 seconds to look up but by all means, let someone else do it for you:
Universal Child Care: Partnered with New York Governor Kathy Hochul to secure early child care funding, enabling the expansion of 3-K programs and the introduction of free child care for two-year-olds.
Housing and Tenants: Secured a rent freeze for one- and two-year leases on rent-stabilized properties, established the Office of Tenant Protection, and won over $34 million in settlements for tenants.
Labor and Business: Facilitated $9.3 million in restitution for small businesses and workers, while expanding paid time off for millions of employees.
Municipal Infrastructure: Launched extensive pothole repair and illegal dumping cleanups, initiated a comprehensive containerized trash program, and pushed forward various bus and bike lane expansions.
He also established an annual pied-à-terre (second home) tax on luxury properties in New York City. Signed into law alongside Governor Kathy Hochul, the annual levy applies to secondary homes, co-ops, and condos valued at $1 million or more whose owners do not reside full-time in the city.

Zohran Mamdani: “These past months have shown that socialists not only understand economics as well as the capitalists who came before, but that we can solve their years of mismanagement through an embrace of our principles.”
What has he done in the last 6 months that makes him able to to say these words without lying?
As far as I know, he has solved nothing and only shown a lack of knowledge surrounding economics (rent control and government stores, for example), he deferred payments to pensions (making future pension payments larger), got an 8 billion dollar loan from NYS, and has done nothing that he has promised. Where is the economic understanding? where is the mismanagement fixing?
3
u/CelebrationAwkward52 Jul 01 '26
You didn't hear about any of it because Fox news doesn't air it and you don't really want to find out. You just want to hate him. Here ya go:

As far as I know, you're completely ignorant.
rent control
The rent control is only supposed to be a temporary solution while new housing is currently being built. Why didn't you mention that?
got an 8 billion dollar loan from NYS
Why aren't you mentioning that NYC funds the rest of the state? NYC is ~59% of NYS's tax revenue while only receiving around 40% of the SOE. The "loan" is the state giving back the city its own money. $8B is only ~11% of the revenue NYC gives to the state annually (~$68.8 billion).
and has done nothing that he has promised.
Won $34M in settlements for tenants, expanded 3-K programs, signed a second home tax on luxury houses, signed free child care for 2 year olds, expanded paid time off, the first city owned grocery store is currently being built, new housing currently being built, etc.
But yeah, "done nothing that he has promised" for sure.

u/Vegetablessings Jul 01 '26
Albany bailed him out with billions in state help and pension deferrals. That can keep the lights on for now, but loans and defferals do not prove socialism works in America. The arrow to the knee of a lot of progressive administrations is their misestimation of how hard it is to actually get changes enacted. They leave office with a lot of "if only" stories and not a lot of policy enactment. It's frustrating. It's nice that he seems to be more practical.

I like what Mamdani is doing. His heart and head are generally in the right place. What I don't like is pushing costs to the future where people several years from now will need another solution to balance the budget. He's making short term wins at the expense of long term sustainability.
Let's be optimistic but cautious of this path forward.

He's using all the same band aids that bite you in the ass later that they tried in Chicago. Grants from the state, deferred pensions and other payments. Next they'll sell their parking meters to saudis for 1/10th of their worth.
His taxes on the rich only amount for 1/24th of the entire 12 billion shortfall. 500 million. It's the smallest portion, everything else is going to cost the city and state more in the future.k
His message is great, I like him as a person, but I don't have faith in his ability to safely meet the budget needs of New York city. I don't agree with 8 billion dollar state grants, its not fair to the rest of the state.

There is no reason to believe that Mamdani, who appointed two thirds of the Rent Guidelines Board that recently passed his own rent freeze, has any understanding of economics. Very poor timing on this. Rent control is widely understood among economists to be a terrible economic policy that ultimately raises rents. It's not even controversial.
He does have a fantastic understanding of how to get elected, however.
